Valmouth, by Ronald Firbank

Widely considered to be Firbank's finest novel, Valmouth (1919) is set in a fictional coastal town in the West of England, where the air is so glorious that the population is mainly composed of over-sexed centenarians. Among the colourful characters are the Catholic Mrs. Hurstpierpoint and her friend Mrs. Thorougfare; the Tooke family, who run a dairy farm and whose daughter is in love with Mrs. Thoroughfare's son Dick; and Mrs. Yajñavalkya, a black masseuse whose promised aphordisiacs are in high demand...

An intriguing combination of modernism and high camp, the novel has been admired by writers such as W.H. Auden, Evelyn Waugh, E.M. Forster and (more recently) Alan Hollinghurst for the self-conscious decadence of its archaic style and the outrageousness of its satire.

Much Ado About (almost) Nothing
By Jerry Richardson
Valmouth is a novel made up from a series of set pieces. The episodic structure of the novel is like a soap opera miniseries of manners. Parts of it are pretty funny. Nobody dies or is born. Nothing particularly important happens. The story is presented for pure aesthetic enjoyment as parody of the British upper class before World War I. It's mildly decadent and campy.
The stylistic innovations Ronald Firbank presented in his novels influenced a number of later British and American writers.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Charles Dickens's classic tale of one family's suffering during the French Revolution is brought to life in this audio adaptation. The voice of Audie Award-winning narrator Simon Vance sets the tone for the characters and creates the Dickensesqe mood of the times when the rich and the poor were far apart and no one was exempt from the ensuing wrath during the Revolution. Vance's stone varies from soothing to animated while creating different voices for the characters and using appropriate accents. A bonus feature on the last CD is an e-book in pdf format that can be printed or used as a read-along while listening to the audio. This easily navigated feature would be particularly helpful for struggling readers.—Jeana Actkinson, Bridgeport High School, TX

An Eighth Grader reviews A Tale of Two Cities
By A Customer
This book is incredible. I read it last year (in eighth grade), and I love it. I love Charles Dickens' language and style. Whoever is reading this may have little or no respect for my opinions, thinking that I am to young to comprehend the greatness of the plot and language, and I admit that I probably do not completely appreciate this classic piece of literature. I do read above a 12th grade level, although that doesn't count for a whole lot. It took me a while to get into this book. In fact, I dreaded reading it for a long time. But nearer to the end, I was drawn in by the poignant figure of a jackal, Sydney Carton. In his story I became enthralled with this book, especially his pitiful life. After I read and cried at Carton's transformation from an ignoble jackal to the noblest of persons, I was able to look back over the parts of the book that I had not appreciated, and realize how truly awesome they are. I learned to appreciate all of the characters, from Lucy Manette to Madame Defarge. I also was affected by all of the symbolism involved with both the French Revolution, and the nature of sinful man, no matter what the time or place. My pitiful review could never do justice to this great book, please don't be discouraged by my inability.

It is the best of books, it is the worst of books....
By Newton Ooi
I was first introduced to this book when I was 14 years old in my 8th grade English class. I found it utterly overwhelming; in its cast, its plotlines, its settings, its themes and most of all, in the intricate web the various relationships create. I only understood three things about this book. First, the two cities are London and Paris. Second, France was convulsing itself with the French Revolution while England was undergoing changes that would prepare it to enter the Industrial Revolution. Third, English in Dickens' time did not resemble English at the end of the 20th century, but somehow seemed similar to the English used in Hollywood epic movies from the 1950s and 1960s like Spartacus, Ben-hur, the Ten Commandments, Cleopatra, etc...

Years later, I picked up this book and reread it. I considered this a labor, not of love, but of duty. This book is so famous and used so often in English literature classes that I felt I had to read it again for a deeper understanding. What I got from this book a 2nd time around is a profoundly subtle yet accurate sociological and psychological study of what happens to a society and a community that is built on shaky foundations. Specifically, France was an aristocracy where a tiny minority owned all the land. The rest of society was organized into tiers that varied in their opportunities of becoming landowners. Because of this pyramid structure, most of the people hewed to the social order knowing that yes they get crapped on by those above them, but there's always somebody below them to take advantage of.

Eventually this social Ponzi scheme comes to a screeching halt with the French Revolution. Enough people have had enough that they decide to start over. In the process a lot of people get killed and a lot of property changes hands. So woven into this story of a society's collapse are individual tales of woe, revenge, sacrifice, retribution, love and lust. Some are wrongly imprisoned or executed, while others willingly trade places to free those who have been marked for punishment. Families are torn asunder, and friendships are made and betrayed.

Overall, this book is a classic; though not appropriate for anyone not in their mid-teens yet. Its careful depiction of a society warrants its reading for those interested in 18th century Western history. But it should be read with notes and study guides for its depth and complexity can easily lose the interest and focus of many readers.

A Tale of Two Cities
By mp
The more Dickens I read, the more impressed I become at his skill as a writer. No matter the form, be it short, long, or a monolith like some of his best works, Dickens excels at changing his style of characterization and plot to fit whatever mode he writes in. "A Tale of Two Cities" is one of his shorter novels, and he manages to make the most of out of the allotted space. The compression of the narrative sacrifices Dickens's accustomed character development for plot and overall effect, but what we get is still phenomenal.
"A Tale of Two Cities" begins in 1775, with Mr. Lorry, a respectable London banker, meeting Lucie Manette in Paris, where they recover Lucie's father, a doctor, and mentally enfeebled by an unjust and prolonged imprisonment in the Bastille. This assemblage, on their journey back to England, meets Charles Darnay, an immigrant to England from France who makes frequent trips between London and Paris. Upon their return to England, Darnay finds himself on trial for spying for France and in league with American revolutionaries. His attorney, Stryver, and Stryver's obviously intelligent, if morally corrupt and debauched, assistant, Sydney Carton, manage to get Darnay exonerated of the charges against him. Darnay, a self-exiled former French aristocrat, finds himself compelled to return to France in the wake of the French Revolution, drawing all those around him into a dangerous scene.
Dickens portrays the French Revolution simplistically, but powerfully, as a case of downtrodden peasants exacting a harsh revenge against an uncaring aristocratic, even feudal, system. The Defarge's, a wine merchant and his wife, represent the interests of the lower classes, clouded by hatred after generations of misuse. Darnay, affiliated by birth with the French aristocracy, is torn between sympathy for his native country in its suffering, and his desire to be free of his past.
"A Tale of Two Cities" is a novel driven by historical circumstance and plot, much like the works of Sir Walter Scott, wherein the characters themselves assert less agency, finding themselves forced to deal with the tide of epic events. Richard Maxwell's introduction to this newest Penguin edition does a good job outlining the themes of doubling and literary influence that Dickens works with. One specific influence I discerned in reading "A Tale" that Maxwell doesn't metion is Edmund Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France," which if nothing else, gives the feeling that the rampant violence of the early revolution and the later Reign of Terror has brought about an irreversible change in human nature. While Dickens remains cautiously optimistic throughout the novel that France can recover, the tone of the novel speaks to the regression of humanity into a more feral, primal state, rather than advertise any real hope for its enlightened progress.
Despite the supposed dichotomy between England and France in the novel, Dickens seems to suggest throughout that there are no real differences, due to the way that human nature is consistently portrayed. With England in between two revolutions, American and French, Lucie's sensitivity early in the novel to hearing the "echoing" footsteps of unseen multitudes indicates a palpable fear that the "idyllic" or "pastoral" England he tries to portray is not exempt from the social discontent of America or France. In this light, stolid English characters like Miss Pross, Jerry Cruncher, and Jarvis Lorry appear to almost overcompensate in their loyalty to British royalty. In a novel that deals with death, religion, mental illness, I could go on and on for a week, but I won't. One of those novels whose famous first and last lines are fixed in the minds of people who've never even read it, "A Tale of Two Cities" demands to be read and admired.

"[...]have such actions in my house, and know that Klaus would not approve of it either." The words sounded strangely from the young lips. "Yes, Anna Maria "—Rosamond von Hegewitz smiled "if you will judge thus! These people have quite different sentiments from us, and—and you cannot know, I suppose, if their views are honest?" "That is nothing to me!" replied Anna Maria. "They cannot marry, because they are both as poor as church mice. What is to come of it? The girl must leave; you surely see that, dear aunt?"[...]".

Well Titled

I had not read this classic previously, but I realized its worth immediately. In this century sentiment and forbearance are not in style. The youth today do not value the virtues of love, especially filial love. Passion is understood and accepted, but is believed to be temporary, steadfastness has become rare. When every tiny bit of inconsequential living is posted on social media, and everyone strives to be understood rather than to understand, how can Anna Maria's character be truly appreciated? Today the media is full of the antics of the Susannas of this world. I truly love this book and I highly recommend it for the pleasure of reading. Still I believe some of the edifying lesson will creep into the reader's subconscious. I hope that men may see themselves in Klaus and Edwin's infatuation with the silly Susanna.

Utterly superb. Old-school gothic tale of the highest order.
By Alexiel
Much of my enjoyment of this book comes from my love of the classic, traditional Romantic-gothic, particularly those written or set in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This fantastic book by Basil Copper fits the bill *beautifully.*
A group of folklorists at a meeting in 19th century Hungary (we can assume in the Translyvania area as part of Transylvania is in Hungary) end up trapped inside the Homolky Castle due to weather, which stands menacingly above a village as you might imagine. The castle is appropriately huge and lonely, with many dark and unexplored passages. It's located in a forbidding landscape of forests and mountains. The Homolky clan is a bit strange and mysterious, but the clincher is that they and their castle have a history of being haunted by a werewolf. Indeed, as the folklorists stay on in the castle, it appears they are all being stalked, and gruesome murders turn up evidence pointing to the werewolf. Now one of the men has to get to the bottom of what's going on and unearth the secrets behind the hauntings and attacks.
It may sound like a cliched set-up, but that's the beauty - I love set-ups like these, but since they're seen as so cliched, it turns out there are very few serious books you can name that are structured in this way. It's a story in the vein of the classic gothic tales - late night supernatural encounters in the castle, shadowed castle corridors, a beautiful and haunted young woman in peril, mysterious murder, long-buried family secrets... this story has it all, and Basil Copper executes it in a flawlessly haunting and atmospheric way.
By now I think you should know whether this book is for you or not. It's intelligently written, and perhaps the cynics would call this book "cheesy," but I am a big fan of the classic gothic atmosphere... frankly we need more books written for adults in which a character has to play supernatural detective in a forbidding 19th century castle. If you're a fan of this type of book, then I can't recommend it enough.

Not What I Expected
By romancefan
Up until I read The House of The Wolf, I did not have a great track record with the classics offered for Kindle. This book was a pleasant surprise. Written as the experiences of a French aristocrat, almost as if it is autobiographical, during the Parisian revolt of the 1500's, this is a story of adventure, redemption and romance. To be sure a great, interesting little read. I could hardly put it down. The ending was not what I expected.

Simply the best Gothic horror I've ever read.
By Lynne M. Mikesh-Whitney
In The House of the Wolf, Basil Copper has created the ultimate fusion of modern literary style with the traditional Gothic-horror novel. That is, it presents all the elements of the best of the classic 19th-century Gothics in terms of plot and atmosphere, but written with a modern sensibility. The classic features are all there: the snowbound Hungarian village, the exotic and towering Homolky Castle with its rearing towers and secret cellars, the noble family with secrets to hide, the gathering of men of science. The choice of a werewolf as the adversary is actually fairly unusual--in the traditional Gothic the role would more likely fall to a ghost or vampire, and the creature is presented strictly in classic vein without any of the present-day tropes that have grown up around them in the World of Darkness/Laurell Hamilton/Underworld sense.

Each page all but drips atmosphere: Copper is a master wordsmith and purely in his element here; each setting is brought to vivid life with an attention to detail that makes the horror seem all the more real. The danger to the characters is intimate and personal rather than distant and alien, the aura of mystery and fear is built carefully from chapter to chapter and builds to a conclusion that is both exciting and logical. A thread of dry, ironic humor also threads through the book (the name of the village; the fact that the gathering of scientists is actually one of experts in folklore, witchcraft, and so on; an offhand reference to the events of Copper's previous novel, Necropolis, in a newspaper headline read in one chapter) without breaking the mood.

The cover and internal illustrations by Stephen Fabian are also worth noting; this is some of his finest work and help bring the story to life without being intrusive.

I cannot recommend this book enough to any fan of the classic horror story. If you're the kind of person whose shelf already contains Dracula, Frankenstein, the works of Poe, or The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The House of the Wolf is a must-read.

Original?
By A. Moreno Diaz
This book was formerly named "First edition" and now "Original version". I bought the "First edition". Once in my hands I found the title rather misleading, It inclined one to think that the book contained the first edition of the tales. But in the first page of the book is stated: "Grimm's fairy stories. 1922". Actually the firts version of Grimm's stories dates back to 1812 - 1814, and they changed the stories several times producing seven different editions until 1857. Then, which original version are you getting?

Perfect For Children Around Upper Elementary and Middle School Age
By Michael Carr
This was a wonderful book based upon the classic fairy tales and many more. The Grimm Gary tales are gruesome yet intriguing. I highly reccomend this book to people who are of all ages. I am only a high schooler but my younger brothers who are upper-elementary school and middle school age enjoyed the stories I read to them (Hansel+Gretel, Rapunzle, Snow-White, Snow-White and Rose-Red, Cinderrell, Goose Girl, and Faithful John) and always wanted to hear more. This is a book good for many ages but may be too graphic or gruesome for children younger than 8.

awesome!
By Jaime G.
Free book on Grimm's stories, what's not to like? I urge everyone out there before buying a copy of any older classic (Dracula, Grimm's, Pride and Prejuidice) to look for a free version. The books are considered public domain and can be found for free rather than buying them. Amazon has free copies of loads of public domain books. Please check before you pay!

The Movement: Concluded, by Dave Burns

"All who draw breath, draw Grace."

The Movement: Concluded is a completed anthology of The Movement Series including the works: The Movement: A Children's Story for Grown-ups, The Movement: Revisited, and Edem's Flight. Told through the voice of a paternal narrator, the stories take on a whimsical, magical feel.

The Movement: A Children's Story for Grown-ups follows the journeys of Tick, the little clockwork man, through a wondrous land to find the Maker and discover the truth behind the cruel joke.

The Movement: Revisited brings us back to that marvelous land, and chronicles the story of those left behind in the wake of Tick's departure.

Edem's Flight is the spiritual successor to The Movement Series. It is the story of our dear friend following a single grain of sand across the desert dunes to the promise on the other side.

Well, dear listener, might I once again suggest a warm cup of cocoa, some gooey chocolate chip cookies, and a warm fire? For the tale/tail is unfolding, and the wag is in sight....

For the child in all of us,

An Adult Whimsical Disney-like Anthology
By Vicki
I love this book. The author has such a flair for writing that every paragraph is described in such detail that the reader can easily picture whatever is being portrayed. Each anthology is a magical, whimsical adult version of a Disneyland or Oz type tale that keeps the reader enthralled. I did not want to put the book down. I would recommend this feel better book to all adults. You will be whisked away from the daily grind to a colorful wonderland. Don't miss it.

Stories as comforting as a soft blanket and hot chocolate
By Kelly
A collection of stories with the author's heart and soul poured in! The narrator is a familiar and comfortable presence throughout the books. "But before we get there, dear Reader, might I suggest we get nice and comfy - with a warm glass of milk at the ready and another plate of gooey chocolate chip cookies - for I feel the Maker's work is not done, and even we may be changed before it is." Off-putting Narration
By JPSkotnik
I just could not get into the narration style. For me, it was distracting. I didn't want to be friends with the narrator; I just wanted to read a story. It just wasn't for me.

Mankind, says a Chinese manuscript, which my friend M. was obliging enough to read and explain to me, for the first seventy thousand ages ate their meat raw, clawing or biting it from the living animal, just as they do in Abyssinia to this day. This period is not obscurely hinted at by their great Confucius in the second chapter of his Mundane Mutations, where he designates a kind of golden age by the term Cho–fang, literally the Cooks' holiday. The manuscript goes on to say, that the art of roasting, or rather broiling (which I take to be the elder brother) was accidentally discovered in the manner following: The swineherd, Ho–ti, having gone out in the woods one morning, as his manner was, to collect masts for his hogs, left his cottage in the care of his eldest son Bo–bo, a great lubberly boy, who being fond of playing with fire, as younkers of his age commonly are, let some sparks escape into a bundle of straw, which kindling quickly, spread the conflagration over every part of their poor mansion, till it was reduced to ashes. Together with the cottage, (a sorry antediluvian makeshift of a building, you may think it), what was of much more importance, a fine litter of new–farrowed pigs, no less than nine in number, perished.

The Fortnight in September, by R C Sherriff

The Fortnight in September, a bestseller in 1931, was a very brave book to write because it was not obviously ‘about’ anything except the ‘drama of the undramatic’. And yet the greatness of the novel is that it is about each one of us: all of human life is here in the seemingly simple description of the family’s annual holiday in Bognor Regis.

Because of a bet by his friends, Phileas sets out to get all the way around the world in eighty days. Phileas is a rich man, but also very precise about his life. He wants everything done the way he likes and will get rid of anyone who does not do that. The wager starts when he is at a local club and begins an argument about whether a person could get all the way around the world in such a short period of time. He believes he can because a new railroad has been opened in India. Because he is so sure of his mathematical figures, he takes the wager and sets off with his new valet. He has a carefully planned route for them to travel by steamer boat and railroad. Their itinerary includes crossing the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean and also across several continents. What he does not plan on is that a bank robber left England at the same time they did and a detective mistakes Phileas for the robber and follows them. Along the way, Phileas bribes people to rush their trip, they rescue a woman about to be sacrificed, ride elephants and miss their boats. They lose a few days and have to rush to make up the lost time. When they finally get to San Francisco, their adventure really speeds up! They encounter a big herd of buffalo and are also attacked by Sioux Indians. All the while, Phileas is still trying to make up lost time and get back to England in eighty days.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up?To most modern kids, classics may be great, worthy, even exciting stories, but they were written in and for their own times and the context can sometimes be obscure. Using the visually irresistible printing techniques popularized by the "Eyewitness" series, these two books, when prominently displayed, will probably attract more impulse readers than some of the dustier editions. But do they accomplish their stated aim? Direct textual illustration is plentiful, lively, and useful. The reproductions of prints, photographs, and maps that pepper each page and are intended to enhance readers' grasp of the times, however, are a mixed success. There is a sameness to them and an arbitrary feel to their use. Pirate buffs will find Treasure Island's variety of ship drawings, details of sailing minutiae, and photographs of pieces of eight or guns and swords quite satisfying. Verne's work is less enhanced by its graphics. This episodic travelogue would be best served by lots of clear maps with the route well marked. But the few maps shown are so small that the legends are unreadable and country and city names are blurred. Limitations aside, the initial appeal of this fresh approach may serve to attract some new readers to these enduring stories that have managed without any help for this long.?Sally Margolis, formerly at Deerfield Public Library, IL

The explanatory captions (credited to Jean-Pierre Verdet only on the copyright page) accompanying the latter are largely superfluous, although they do add random snippets of historical background to the journey. It's the views of old ships and trains, of costumed natives, and distant ports of call--from Port Said to San Francisco--that evoke the tale's panorama of the exotic, just as the many lurid Verne trading cards and other spinoffs capture the plot's melodramatic highlights. A good way to put both book and story in context for young armchair travelers. (Fiction. 11-15) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

“The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived.”—Arthur C. Clarke

steam powered excellence
By I Teach Typing
I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

Very Good Even If No Balloon Rides
By Brian P. McDonnell
The story is about an eccentric Englishman named Phileas Fogg who makes a twenty thousand pound bet with five of his rich country club friends to travel around the world in eighty days with his trusty servant Passepartout a Frenchman. Along the way they have to overcome many obstacles. Fogg spends most of his fortune overcoming these obstacles and if they don't win the bet he will be ruined. There are some things however that even money can't overcome and several times Fogg is faced with a moral decision that if he pursues the right thing to do will significantly set him back on time.
Their travels take them through England, Paris, the Suez Canal, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, America, and Ireland. In India they rescue a princess who stays on with them throughout the rest of their journey and a love interest grows between her and Fogg. There is also another subplot involving a bank robbery in England where 55 thousand pounds have been stolen, and Fogg is considered to be the main suspect. A detective Fix is assigned to follow Fogg and to arrest him once he sets foot on English territory.
This book seems to be split into two parts. During the first part of the book when things are going smoothly the servant Passepartout seems to be the main character. At each port Fogg stays in his cabin and just focuses on the next leg of the trip while Passepartout ventures out and gives you a description of the land. It would seem a shame to travel all around the world and not pause to take in any of the sights as Fogg does. I found most of these early chapters pretty mundane and uneventful.
The subplot with Fix at times becomes annoying, and it isn't until they are all working towards the same goal, that this line of the story improves. I also found the exchange rate between dollars and pounds confusing at times. The pound must have been about four or five times greater than the dollar at the time this story was written. Fogg leaves England with around twenty thousand pounds and spends it seems over a hundred thousand dollars on the trip.
Later on as the story progresses and things start to go wrong the focus changes over to Fogg. Passepartout still does some heroic things, but Fogg takes charge and shows some redeeming qualities. The pace of the story quickens and becomes more enjoyable with a few skirmishes taking place in India and America. Fogg seems a different person upon returning to England, and his life is changed forever.
My wife has a framed poster that hangs on one of our walls with a collage of all of the movies that have won the best picture of the year award. "Around The World In Eighty Days" won the award in 1956, and the picture is represented in the collage with the main character Phileas Fogg and his trusty servant Passepartout taking a balloon flight. Based on this picture for years I always assumed the book was about a trip in a balloon around the world. I was surprised then to find out once I finally got a chance to read the actual book that they travel by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but that they never travel by balloon. It turns out that the most memorable scene from the movie was made up by the director and added on to the story. The director seemed to have come to same conclusion that I did, that the written story itself was very good, but I was expecting something a little more.
The book was written in 1873. Jules Verne the author is a Frenchman. In this day and age it was pleasing to see both England and America looked upon in such a favorable light. Englishmen were portrayed as noble and Americans were portrayed as wild and adventurous.

Justina's Review

I think this book is a superior book because it is full of action. This book is about a man named Mr. Phileas Fogg, and his faithful servant, Passepartout, that wager a bet that They can travel the whole world in eighty days stopping at Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi, then to Bombay, then Calcutta, Hong Kong, Japan (Yokohama), San Francisco, New York, back to London, all within eighty days, and by steamboats, and trains. However, a nosy detective, Detective Fix, tracks them down, and tries to arrest Mr. Fogg because he believes that Fogg stole fifty-five thousand pounds. As one may guess, this greatly detains Mr. Fogg, and it seems like he may not make the trip around the world after all. However, the Fix never seems to catch up with Fogg, and Fogg triumphs over most of the obstacles that come his way, like missing boats, missing trains, missing people, and Fogg even meets and rescues a beautiful Indian Princess called Aouda. However, Fix finally catches up to the detective, and everything seems lost for Fogg until Fix discovers that Fogg was not the robber, and Fogg is released. Even so, Fogg is one day late, and in doing so, misses the train that would have taken him to London precisely to win the bet. He ordered a special train, but even in doing so, still misses the bet...or so he thinks. The ending of the book is a very unexpected one. Read this book and find out!

The Gambler, by Fyodor Dostoevsky

‘The Gambler’ is a psychologically probing novel concerning the gambling episodes, tangled love affairs and complicated lives of Alexey Ivanovitch, a young gambler; Polina Alexandrovna, the woman he loves; a pair of French adventurers and other characters. It is a bleak picture of the fatal attractions of gambling with wonderful characterization, faithful depiction of gambling life at fashionable German watering holes.

Amazon.com Review
The Gambler brilliantly captures the strangely powerful compulsion to bet that Dostoyevsky, himself a compulsive gambler, knew so well. The hero rides an emotional roller coaster between exhilaration and despair, and secondary characters such as the Grandmother, who throws much of her fortune away at the gaming tables, are unforgettable. The book's publishing history is equally so: Under the pressure of a deadline from an unscrupulous publisher, and with rights to his entire oeuvre at stake, Dostoyevsky dictated the book in less than a month to the star pupil of Russia's first shorthand school. Then he married her.

Beauty Amid Ashes.
By Bernard Chapin
I loved this book. I'm not sure that any book entitled "Gambling Psychology" would include a better profile of the psychopathology that is gambling addiction. The main character's massochism is also a wonderful case study of how such personalities operate and function. The plot is excellent and "granny" is so perfectly described that it's as if the author included a photograph of her. Much of the Russian psyche is on display and the reader will get a glimpse into people and lifestyles that are quite in keeping with what one might find today in our own Roulettenberg, Las Vegas. This was a concise but pleasant ride through human nature.

An engrossing, fun short work
By A Customer
The story behind the creation of The Gambler is well-known--due to heavy debt, Dostoevsky had less than four weeks to write a novel to avoid losing the rights to all his works, both past and future. To make his task a bit easier, he hired the star pupil of a stenography school (whom he later married) to take dictation, and for the material of the novel he borrowed heavily from his own life--he had experience as a compulsive gambler, and he used his mistress Apollinariya Suslova as a model for the character Polina.
The result was an inspired, though by necessity short, work of art. The passages set in the casino do an excellent job of capturing the tortured fascination that gamblers have with the roulette wheel even for readers, such as myself, who have avoided casinos all their lives. However, The Gambler is not just about gambling--it features an intriguing array of characters which are developed quite well in the mere 117 pages of the novel. "Granny," for instance, is probably just about the most amusing character I've seen in Dostoevsky, and the entangled aims of all the characters make for a very lively narrative. It seems as though, if he had the opportunity, Dostoevsky could have written a whole novel about any one of them.
Obviously, The Gambler lacks the depth and brilliance of Dostoevsky's more famous long works, but if you're after a quick, entertaining read, it's really an excellent choice.

God as Lady Luck
By A Customer
The Gambler is primarily a book about obssession and mania, a topic that Dostoyevsky would go on to further explore using criminal, political and religious themes as a backdrop. The God in the gambler is not Christ, but Lady Luck and her spinning ways at the roullette wheel.
This book written while FD was majorly in debt due to gambling losses explores his need to gamble. Moreover, it is a book that contains some of Dostovesky most memorable tertiary characters. Alexi the narrator is a young tutor and part of a Russian general's entourage in a Riviera. He falls in love with the General's neice, who is constantly tormenting, taunting and pathologically luring him. She makes Alexi, who is not only a compulsive gambler, but an impulsive cretin commit "unspeakable" acts to bourgeoise and lesser royalty in public. One instance has Alexi at her command bumping into a German baronesse's breast and not apologizing. Alexi's desperate failure to win the niece's attention's is marked by his increasing need to gamble his pitous funds. But Lady Luck does smile on Alexi for a while (although he is so agitated he doesn't know it), before taking everything away from him: money, love and his meager Russian pride. The novel sees the disintegration and paradoxic increased euphoria of Alexi's character, until he is at the end so depraved that one wonders what keeps him from going mad. It is, of course, the brilliance of the book. Gambling, which is his undoing, is also his ultimate salvation, his wheel spinning, silver ball bouncing hope. The more depraved Aleci becomes the more manic and inspired the prose becomes with Dostoyevsky's frenetic brilliance making the best of us get itchy palms. At the end you yourself will want to hit the roullette wheel with an inspiration that can only come from the poisoned and infectious mind of a religious man and great writer who once viewed God not as the Arbiter of Good and Evil and Creator of Worlds, but God as a roll of dice, a deal of the cards and a most terrible and remorseless spin of the wheel.
Although most people consider this book a minor work, it is Dostoyevsky at his inspired best. While it doesn't have the profound (and morbid) philosophy of Notes from the Underground, it has incredible characterization and a humorous, dramatic narrative

About the Author
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was a man of diverse interests - in mathematics, logic, photgraphy, art, theater, religion, medicine, and science. He was happiest in the company of children for whom he created puzzles, clever games, and charming letters. As all Carroll admirers know, his book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), became an immediate success and has since been translated into more than eighty languages. The equally popular sequel Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, was published in 1872. The Alice books are but one example of his wide ranging authorship. The Hunting of the Snark, a classic nonsense epic (1876) and Euclid and His Modern Rivals, a rare example of humorous work concerning mathematics, still entice and intrigue today's students. Sylvie and Bruno, published toward the end of his life contains startling ideas including an 1889 description of weightlessness. The humor, sparkling wit and genius of this Victorian Englishman have lasted for more than a century. His books are among the most quoted works in the English language, and his influence (with that of his illustrator, Sir John Tenniel) can be seen everywhere, from the world of advertising to that of atomic physics.Hugh Haughton is a senior lecturer at the University of York. He edited Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass for Penguin Classics.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
By Barbara Mojica
I picked up this new e book version of the classic Victorian tale on a whim. What I did not expect was a totally new perspective on this classic fantasy tale.

As a child I read the book, but did not much care for it. After doing a bit of research I discovered that Carroll (real name Charles Dodgson) told this story to a friend and his three young children while enjoying a boat ride. The children were so pleased with it that he decided to write it down and commission John Tenniel to do the drawings for the publication. Dodgson was a mathematician intrigued by the math and science that was being applied daily to inventions as England was entering the Industrial Revolution. His other interests included reading, poetry and photography.

Alice was modeled on one of these three girls. She is curious and polite. The character in the story displays fear and courage, resilience, and the ability to adapt to change. The anthropomorphic characters she encounters are a strange bunch; some of them like the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar appear to teach her, while others like the Mock Turtle and the Flamingo appear sillier and more frivolous. A careful reading will produce numerous evidences of mathematical reasoning and the importance that the author attaches to mathematics in the world around us; yet the reader’s main focus centers on the trials and tribulations that Alice must face from the time she falls into the rabbit hole: how she must swim herself across the sea of tears to face the challenges that many creatures present, to her ultimate escape from the nefarious Queen of Hearts at the trial, which almost results in her losing her head! Alice learns to think on her feet quickly in this coming of age tale.

Adult readers will reminisce and recall many of the famous quotations, like “Off with his head,” and “Curious and curiouser.” Tenniel’s woodcut engraved illustrations are etched in time and delight the eye, whether in black and white or in color. The beautiful scroll work that edge the pages are a reminder of the care taken with printing books long ago. Alice is a strong, intelligent character who maintains the proper balance between respect and independence; she is probably one of the first strong female models in modern literature. This book can be used as wonderful tale for family discussion on so many levels. I would recommend it for tweens and teens as well.
