HOURS OF ENJOYMENT!
By Joyce M.
I am greatly enjoying reading this collection of both fiction and non-fiction. Stephen Leacock was a great observer of human frailties, but he never stooped to sarcasm. Instead, he chose to use his great wit in a gentle way. What a delight!

"When everything is eaten up one has some peace," said she to herself, and well filled and fat she did not return home till night. The mouse at once asked what name had been given to the third child. "It will not please you more than the others," said the cat. "He is called All-gone." "All-gone," cried the mouse, "that is the most suspicious name of all! I have never seen it in print. All-gone; what can that mean?" and she shook her head, curled herself up, and lay down to sleep. As close to the original as you're likely to find for free
By T. Simons
This is an ebook edition of Margaret Hunt's 1884 translation of the *complete* Brother's Grimm (i.e., the 211-tale "large edition," intended for adults and scholars). As such, the language is slightly archaic, and the text itself is lengthy, with the tradeoff that this version does contain the entire collection of stories in the forms the Grimms gave them. Thus, expect the language to be slightly different from what you might remember reading before ("Little Red Riding Hood" is here "Little Red-Cap") and the stories may contain more crudity, violence, and (occasionally) anti-semitism than the versions most people are familiar with. Similarly, several stories normally expurgated from later editions (i.e., "The Jew Among Thorns") are present in this collection.

There's no indexed table of contents, so you'll have to use the kindle's "find" feature to jump to specific stories, and there are some typographical/transcription errors, etc.. It also doesn't appear to contain the Grimm's or Hunt's scholarly footnotes. Still, this is a great overall grab for a free kindle ebook, and probably perfect for lunch-break reading and the like.

A little context: The Brothers Grimm were the first to make a significant scholarly attempt to collect the "original" versions of traditional folk tales, as told by ordinary people. They didn't always adhere perfectly to that dictum -- some of the stories they collected from print sources and educated, middle-class tale-tellers, not just the "common folk" -- but they were in many ways the first scholarly folklorists. They were also German nationalists, and their collections were intended to help foster a sense of German national identity and "German virtues."

Because the Grimms did edit their stories somewhat, and because many of these are traditional stories that exist in many versions in many nations, there are often versions that are "earlier" and more primal than the ones here. If you find yourself wanting more, I'd recommend you look up works by Charles Perrault or Andrew Lang; Perrault's tales pre-date the Grimms' and are often more violent (i.e., Red Riding Hood gets eaten); Andrew Lang's post-date the Grimms and are intended for children, but both should be out of copyright and available in free online editions.

Great collection, Navigable if you use the Kindle search function
By Curious
This is a great collection of the Brothers Grimm's tales. The table of contents is a listing of all of the titles (no point and click) (which by the way there are over 200 tales) but just type in the title that you want into your Kindle (using the find function) and it takes you right to the story! Titles are in English and German. And the stories are wonderful. (Remember this is the real Brothers Grimm so all stories may not be appropriate for the youngest of listeners.)

GRIMMS' FAIRY TALES (MISSION AUDIO) BY THE BROTHERS GRIMM, READ BY 'ROBIN FIELD
By Betjemanian
Actor Robin Field reads the fairy tales of Jakob & Wilhelm Grimm '(1785-1863) (1786-1859). According to Charles W. Elliot (editor of The 'Harvard Classics): "The Children's and Household Tales of the Brothers 'Grimm [first published in 1812 and 1815] was the first deliberate 'attempt to preserve in their pure form the traditional and domestic 'tales of the German people. . . . It was the aim of the collectors, 'carried out with great fidelity and a remarkable instinct for the truly 'popular, to avoid all additions, logical or artistic, to retain as far 'as possible the actual language of the peasants and to eliminate all 'foreign and sophisticated elements. . . ." Note: Due to the advanced 'vocabulary and dramatic content of these stories, they are not 'recommended for the very young. The reading is over eight hours long 'on seven Audio CDs.

The tales include:'
The Frog King, or Iron Henry'
Our Lady's Child'
The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids'
Faithful John'
The Pack of Ragamuffins'
Rapunzel'
The Three Little Men in the Wood'

From Publishers Weekly
First published in 1878, nine years before the debut of Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet, this atmospheric and suspenseful mystery well deserves a modern audience. When someone shoots Horatio Leavenworth, a wealthy retired merchant, through the head in his library late one night, the evidence at the inquest indicates that no one could have left the victim's locked Manhattan mansion before the discovery of the body the next morning. Suspicion thus falls on members of the household, specifically the dead man's nieces, Mary and Eleanore, only one of whom stands to benefit from their uncle's death. Everett Raymond, a junior partner in a New York law firm that had Leavenworth as a client, teams with unassuming official investigator Ebenezer Gryce to seek the truth. Green (1846–1935), whose smooth prose remains fresh, makes Gryce an interesting enough character to leave fans of traditional whodunits eager to see more of the detective in reissues of his further exploits. Pivotal nineteenth-century mystery
By Patto
I've always been crazy about nineteenth-century fiction, so I can't believe I'm just discovering this author. Anna Katharine Green has drifted into obscurity in recent decades, yet her mysteries were best sellers in her day - and her works influenced both Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie.

The Leavenworth Case, Green's first novel, was a runaway success. The setting is the palatial Fifth Avenue mansion of millionaire merchant Horatio Leavenworth, found shot to death in his library. At the inquest we meet the two ravishingly beautiful nieces who share Mr. Leavenworth's home.

The coroner quickly establishes some suspicious behavior on the part of Eleanore Leavenworth. Mary Leavenworth, on the other hand, is heir to the victim's vast wealth and benefits from his death. Everett Raymond, the young lawyer looking out for the cousins, will have his hands full protecting them. To complicate matters, he's falling in love with Eleanore.

Green has invented a wonderful detective to grapple with the Leavenworth case. Ebenezer Gryce lacks the penetrating eye of a conventional Victorian detective. He'd rather gaze at a doorknob or a button than look directly at anyone. He's not lean and mean but portly and comfortable. And he's not a gentleman. To overcome this handicap, he makes use of young Mr. Raymond, who can move in society and discreetly learn its secrets.

So we end up with two detectives: Mr. Raymond, who's good at gathering evidence but draws wrong conclusions - and Mr. Gryce, who sets things straight, repeatedly.

The introduction by Michael Sims is excellent. I found it fascinating, for example, that during Green's lifetime The Leavenworth Case was used by Yale to teach its law students the risks of circumstantial evidence.

I loved this book, and I'm going on an immediate search for more mysteries by Anna Katharine Green.

Well-Penned, Well-Plotted
By Gypsi Phillips Bates
Anna Katharine Green (November 11, 1846 - April 11, 1935) was one of the first Americans to write mysteries that featured a detective, and is also credited with shaping the genre into more legally accurate fiction, as well as inventing both the (new stereotypcial) meddling busybody sleuth and girl detective.

The Leavenworth Case (her first novel), is a complex mystery with a well penned and well planned plot. It takes many twists and turns, but none unbelievable or contrived, and arrives at a solution at once surprising, satisfying, and obvious from the beginning if the read had been looking in the right direction.

Loosely, the plot of The Leavenworth Case is that Horace Leavenworth is found murdered in his locked library. Naturally, his household is suspected, and evidence points to one of his nieces, Eleanor.

The narrator is a young lawyer, Mr. Raymond, who has no experience is mysteries or murders. The police detective, Mr. Gryce, enlists Raymond's help because he is a gentleman, and as such will be welcome in places that Gryce would not be. While Raymond hates the thoughts of playing spy, he has become extremely interested in protecting Eleanor's reputation, so agrees. All the clues and information the reader sees are what Raymond sees, so at times, the reader is deducing (like Raymond) without all the facts. As new information comes to light, Raymond has to fit that into his hypotheses, or scrap it all together and form a new one--and so does the reader.

The Leavenworth Case was a most satisfying mystery, and kept me guessing til the end. I was certain I knew who the guilty party was time and time again. Time and time again I had to reform my ideas around new information. The clues and misinformation did not feel contrived at all, rather it came about very naturally, as one would expect during the course of a police investigation.

Not only does The Leavenworth Case provide a meaty mystery; in it, one sees a very clear picture of life among certain classes in the U.S. in the late nineteenth century.

Given both the quality of the mystery, and the slice of history it gave, I look forward to reading many more of Green's mysteries.

A charming, interesting and funny (ironic) story
By Knut L. Seip
This book tells the story of the murder of Mr. Leavenworth in his house in New York around the middle of 1800. The murder is resolved in the classical Sherlock Holmes style, but the book was published in 1878, some years before Conan Doyle published his first novel with Sherlock Holmes in 1887. Green must have constructed the novel with the purpose of entertaining her readers in many ways; among the main characters are two young ladies, one is glorious "..I beheld a glorious woman" the other "a beautiful creature", (p. 41-42). Their relationships evolve during the story, and many readers at that time, and maybe at present, will recognize their feelings, although not how they are expressed. Green also uses satiric elements, I believe, as she employs the rules and conventions that must have been present at that time for what they are worth. For example, on the notion of what a gentleman is: "as this latter was undoubtly a gentleman" (p. 83) and ".(you) were born one (gentleman) perhaps. Can even ask a lady out to dance without blushing, eh?" (p. 104). Many sentences throughout the book are worth remembering. I liked this one: "I am not a bad man; I am only an intense one". I believe that the story also tells the story on how it was to live in New York around 1860 ties but with an understatement. Although the story is told by a man, I am not sure it could have been written by a man. The book is charming because it reflects its time in a gentle manner, it is interesting because it shows us that, yes, our worldview has changed since 1860ties, and it is funny because the characters balance between caricatures and real persons, but almost always on the real side.

La Odisea: Ilustrado. Texto en prosa (Spanish Edition), by Homero

About the Author

Chaining the Lady is the second Cluster book. Melody, a product of Flint and the Andromedan's mating in Cluster, must save the Milky Way Galaxy and create a place where creatures can transfer without limitations. Melody must survive in worlds unknown and alien to her, and she does that where others fail when her aura augments her skills and abilities.

The book opens with the discovery that Andromeda, the enemy galaxy of the first novel, has discovered the secret of involuntary hosting: a Kirlian aura that is sufficiently stronger than that of an individual can take possession of that individual. Andromeda has secretly infiltrated the highest levels of government in Sphere Sol and its allies and resurrect its plot to steal the energy of the Milky Way. Melody of Mintaka, a direct descendant of Flint of Outworld and his Andromedan nemesis, has a Kirlian aura of well more than two hundred. She is pressed into service to possess and interrogate a captured Andromedan transferee. Melody, hosted in the young and beautiful body of Yael of Dragon, must, like her progenitor, Flint, find a way to defeat the Andromedan threat and save the galaxy. The mysterious Ancients are present again in the form of their artifacts and sites. The themes of tarot and of various myths of Sphere Sol (in this case that of Perseus and Andromeda) play a big part this novel. The InterSphere fleet of starships has forms analogous to the tarot suits of disks, cups, wands, and swords.

Space Opera, combat and a hostage situation
By A Customer
This is the story of Melody of Mintaka, an old neuter who resembles nothing more than a crazy pipe organ. Set apart by the amazing strength of her Aura, she is the only trustworthy being in the Milkyway Galaxy. Why? The greedy beings from Galaxy Andromeda have tipped the power balance and are possessing the Milkyway's most powerful people. Placed in the body of a buxom young woman, she must seek out the enemy hostages. How? With the imagery evoked by the Tarot.
The story flows smoothly, steadily builds suspense and reaches a mind breaking climax. The descriptions are evocative, the dialog believable and the story sound. This is an edge-of-your-seater during the last half of the book. Its an all around good read for Sci-Fi fans. Wait until you see the Magnets!

Readable Space Adventure
By Brainman60
Another enjoyable comic book tale.
This time the hero seems to be a piece of musical farm machinery. It's a thousand years after the last book and those nasty Andromedans are back trying to steal all the energy from the Milky way.
In part one our heroine takes over the body of a voluptuous young female human and by cunning use of tarot cards (again) and her magnificent cleavage, (no really), she uncovers the plot and rallies the troops.
In part two the battle unfolds and there are strange space battles. All very clever and interesting.
Finally our heroine transfers to Andromeda and saves the day with a clever and quite tidy finale.
A clever and very readable classic space adventure full of strange if often implausible aliens.

the nieces take on the pretentiousness of high society
By F. Orion Pozo
Aunt Jane's Nieces in Society is the 5th in a series of 10 novels written by L. Frank Baum under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne. The series is about 3 nieces of their rich uncle John: Louise, Beth and Patsy who met in the 1st novel of the series when they were invited to visit their dying Aunt Jane so she could decide which of them, who she had neglected all their lives, she would leave her fortune to. After her death, the nieces are cared for by their rich uncle John Merrick who, having retired from industry, takes them on various adventures which are detailed in the books of the series.

In this the 5th volume of the series, published 100 years ago in 1910, Baum contrasts the simple goodness of the nieces to the pretentiousness and artificial values of high society. Louise's social climbing mother asks John to see if he can use his connections to get the three nieces introduced to New York's fashionable society. John loans money to a prominent socialite and asks his help. This man's daughter Diana sees this as an opportunity to gain influence with the rich financier and takes the three girls under her wing. All goes well and the girls are accepted at their debut and a charity ball. However Diana's cousin Charles Mershone, a socialite sociopath and one of the darkest characters Baum ever created, is smitten by Louise. When Diana takes a shine to Louise's suitor Arthur, she plots with Charles to separate the naive Louise from her fiancé.

Baum creates a good adventure with a delightful new character while shining a light on the artifice of society. Today's reader will find interesting the limitations the three nieces had to work within as young women in the early 20th century.

Adventures In Immediate Irreality, by Max Blecher

Often called “the Kafka of Romania,” Max Blecher died young but not before creating this incandescent novel.

Adventures in Immediate Irreality, the masterwork of the Romanian writer Max Blecher, vividly paints the crises of "irreality" that plagued him in his youth: eerie and unsettling mirages wherein he would glimpse future events. In gliding chapters that move with a peculiar dream logic of their own, this memoiristic novel sketches the tremulous, frightening, and exhilarating awakenings of a young man.

Review
“When you read his books it's hard to believe your eyes. The author of this masterpiece was a twenty-five-year-old already weakened by disease, but Blecher's words don't merely describe the objects―they dig their talons into the things and hoist them high.” (Herta Müller)

“Blecher has often been compared to Kafka (and not without reason), but the strongest connection, however, is with Salvador Dalí. Like Dalí's 'soft clocks,' everything here is about to melt. It is as though Blecher's world is always on the verge of ontological collapse; from behind the veil of things, nothingness stares out at him.” (The Times Literary Supplement)

“An extraordinary writer, in the family of Kafka and Bruno Schulz. A short life, overwhelmed by disease; a small―but great―magical work. Hallucinatory, intense, and deeply authentic, its literary force is fueled, paradoxically and not entirely, by an acute sensitivity and ardor.” (Norman Manea)

“Sleekly liquid work, the poetry of seething matter itself.” (Dustin Illingworth - 3:AM)

“This is, in any case, a book deserving of new readers, by a writer whose remaining body of work I can only hope will finally appear in its entirety in this country.” (The Nation)

About the Author
Max Blecher, born in 1909 into a Jewish family in Romania, contracted tuberculosis of the spine at 19, and spent the rest of his life in hospitals. Despite his illness, he wrote steadily and carried on an intense correspondence with many, including André Breton, André Gide, and Martin Heidegger. He died at the age of 28.

Working with great Czech, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, French, Italian, German,  and Dutch authors, Michael Henry Heim―one of America’s greatest translators―won many awards, including the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize, the PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation and the PEN Translation Prize.

Adventurous Immediacy of Irrealities
By Irakli Qolbaia
Looking back now, I cannot even remember all that clearly, what it was exactly that Immediately attracted me to this book, so that I purchased it right away, without a second thought, without considering much and without finding out anything about the author (for when I came across this novel I had never before heard of a Romanian author called Max Blecher); it is true that he was, in the description on the back cover of the book, being compared to two of my favourite writers at once – «the Kafka of Romania» they said, and then added that his style reminisced that of Bruno Schulz, which could have been enough but was not, because, admettons, these days everybody is being inaptly compared to somebody all the time – this somebody never less than Kafka or Proust or Joyce or Beckett or who will you – so these comparisons, after all, never amount to much credibility, so it was something else, something in the book itself that attracted me, or rather, possessed me, drew me to it; what it was I do not know but I am glad it was there at that moment because this novel is a work of genius, a masterpiece indeed, and up there with the great idiosyncratic works of literature by, once again, Kafka, Schulz, Pessoa, Walser and the likes.
But, in fact, it is not these writers that he resembles all that much: this is not a Kafkaesque, except that both K and B apparently died of tuberculosis, and that probably all the artists whose genius evidently belongs to the other world and who seem to be lamentably incarcerated in this one resemble one another in a certain degree; Schulz's great fiction does come to mind, albeit superficially, because both B and S construct their work on their childhood or adolescent memories, and both seem constantly on the verge of mundane and phantasmagorical, if I may say so. Having read first couple of chapters, I was convinced that I was in hands of a mad genius painstakingly describing his own state, curious case of himself, examples of such writing I knew, most striking examples being Artuad, Leiris maybe, Schreber even, or, maybe a little more poetically, Lautréamont. This conclusion, too, was largely wrong: reading some more pages was enough to perceive that there was more prose in it, stories and characters started to emerge out of the dreamscape and soon it seemed more like a narrative prose than the kind of confession or report from hell I'd thought I was in for at first. But by now you must have understood that we are in hands of a very peculiar writer (quite unlike anybody else, in fact) and so I hope I want alarm you if I say that the last conclusion, too, was a wrong one. I explain: I am now certain that the way this writing functions is exactly that, slowly and carefully weaving the layers of different plains, from a «plotless» observation of one’s own state to the reminiscence, from a dreamlike or surreal sequence to a matter-of-fact description, etc (hoping I have made my argument more or less clear). What I mean is that this is not a totally abstract (in many quotes) writing, it does largely deal with stuff, there are, for example, sections in the book that are exploding of sexuality (without there being any kind of graphic description), and there is a tiny fragment in there somewhere, concerning the narrator's grandfather, which made me more uneasy than anything has in a long time.
So, this is very specific literature, but I don't think it needs too much apologies on my part, believing I don't know for what reason that people who will not find this interesting, will not find it in the first place. This is a (to paraphrase Pessoa) factless autobiography, where, like a sculptor takes the marble and, cutting off all the rest, gets the sculpture, Blecher took himself, shaved off everything and got this masterpiece, not a marble statue, but a burning waxwork. So if he died dreaming of seeing waxworks burn, he has allowed us such an occasion: all you need to do is read this book.
(P.S. – the translation is MARVELOUS, what do I know, I cannot compare it to the original, but reading this is like reading the most beautiful, dark gem of English prose).

Proust, distilled, and sprinkled with Beckett
By Chris Keele
The flow of memory and the different scenes arranged in this book remind me of In Search of Lost Time without the social commentary and appraising eye, and the often surreal nature of the images and descriptions conjure up hints of Samuel Beckett. This is a great, though short, novel that I highly recommend.

A literary meteor
By aile.verte
In his preface to this slim volume, Andrei Codrescu mentions that Michael Henry Heim, who is renowned for his translations from a number of Easter European languages, learned Romanian specifically to translate Blecher. And knowing that the translator himself was ill when translating this work, brought home to me the almost organic bond between the writer and the translator. This bond certainly informs the quality of the prose: masterfully crafted and deeply felt.

Max Blecher is one of those shooting stars in the literary sky: to avoid the usual comparisons, let's say, he was like Stig Dagerman, or the Swiss writer Fritz Zorn, who were gifted with unusual lucidity and died prematurely, or like Joe Bousquet, the French writer paralyzed as a result of being wounded in war and who, like Blecher, wrote confined in bed. Reviewers have notoriously compared Blecher to Proust or Kafka, although I find this comparison to be overused to the point of meaninglessness: like Kafka because he represents an absurd aspect of reality or presents reality with a sensibility that manages to get under the skin of things; like Proust because he raises the question of memory (or that he raises it through the use of modern optical devices)... Although if I had to compare his writing style to anything, Maurice Blanchot would spring to mind before Proust or Kafka. But why compare at all? Aren't all these comparisons a way of denying his uniqueness? I suppose, from a distance, all stars look alike, but the difference is in how they allow us to navigate through life.

The character portrayed in Adventures in Immediate Irreality seems to lack the protective outer layer, he experiences the world in a raw, visceral manner; the contours of his existence are fluid, they can be penetrated by the objects and spaces around him, making his identity and perception of the world vacillate. He calls this sensory overload his crises. The slightest detail will trigger a flood of meaning. "Once during a crisis the sun sent a small cascade of rays onto the wall like a golden artificial lake dappled with glittering waves. I also saw the corner of a bookcase of large, leather-bound volumes behind glass. And in the end these true-to-life details, perceived from the distance of my swoon, stupefied and stunned me like a last gulp of chloroform. It was the most humdrum and familiar in the objects that disturbed me most." Despite the superficial similarity, these experiences are more like Bataille's blue of noon than Proust's experience of awakening in an unfamiliar room: the narrator essentially experiences the world as catastrophe camouflaged by surface appearances among which most people live out their lives. He presages the shattering of this world of appearances that World War II was going to bring about (and which he did not live to see), but more essentially he senses the catastrophe that is contained within the fabric of the world, and the tentative nature of reality as we know it. Once the instability of the real, supported by everyday objects and social structures, reveals itself, what remains is vertigo.

Worth a buy
By Krysi Foster
Very good. Stuck with the original stories without attempting to edit or sugar coat the content. The editing was well done, and i found myself enjoying each of the stories thoroughly. Formatting was good as well, with no issues that I noticed.
