This early work by Arthur Conan Doyle was originally published in 1910 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography as part of our Cryptofiction Classics series. 'The Terror of Blue John Gap' is a short story about a doctor who travels to Derbyshire to recover from tuberculosis but becomes entrapped in a series of sinister events. Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1859. It was between 1876 and 1881, while studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, that he began writing short stories, and his first piece was published in 'Chambers's Edinburgh Journal' before he was 20. In 1887, Conan Doyle's first significant work, iA Study in Scarlet', appeared in 'Beeton's Christmas Annual'. It featured the first appearance of detective Sherlock Holmes, the protagonist who was to eventually make Conan Doyle's reputation. The Cryptofiction Classics series contains a collection of wonderful stories from some of the greatest authors in the genre, including Ambrose Bierce, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jack London. From its roots in cryptozoology, this genre features bizarre, fantastical, and often terrifying tales of mythical and legendary creatures. Whether it be giant spiders, werewolves, lake monsters, or dinosaurs, the Cryptofiction Classics series offers a fantastic introduction to the world of weird creatures in fiction.

About the Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930.He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. His greatest achievement was his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr. Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT, LOVECRAFT
By DAVID BRYSON
[Paperback available US Create Space Independent Publishing Platform, UK Cryptofiction Classics, both 36pp]
This is a truly superb specimen of the Victorian horror-story genre. The Victorian idiom lent itself ideally to this kind of shivers-giving tales-told-round-the-Christmas-fire narration when it got into the right narrator's hands. Conan Doyle is just such a narrator, and indeed much of his success came precisely from the fact that he is such a good writer, something that is maybe not as fully acknowledged as it might be. This is the kind of thing that works its magic on me: `I found myself shrinking back in horror from the old Roman arch. A fetid breath seemed to ooze from the black depths into which I peered. Could it indeed be that some nameless thing, some dreadful presence, was lurking down yonder?'
Indeed it could be, indeed it was. This is not a story of the preternatural however. The creature apparently has a natural origin, like the hound of the Baskervilles, only nobody knows what it might be. The narrator himself is guessing, and we are left guessing too. It is all set in northern Derbyshire, which is where I happen to have my home. I have visited another of the limestone caverns with my family when the children were young. This was the Speedwell cavern, now of course beset with the usual tourist paraphernalia, but it makes an interesting thought that the putative lair of our beast here would have been close, and that the beast can't have been the only one of its kind.
Not many stories by Lovecraft (whom I love dearly) ever gave me quite this kind of frisson. I wonder how many Conan Doyle enthusiasts actually know this short story, now available with an interesting and informative preface. One way or the other, here's your chance.

Where is it?

I ordered this book back in May to give to a friend as a birthday gift. Well, his birthday has come and gone, and I have not seen hide nor hair of this title. I would really like to know what has happened to this volume. The other two books I ordered at the same time as this volume came to me in a perfectly reasonable amount of time.
Amazon has truly disappointed me with their delivery service this time.
