Great book, not so good an edition

We all know Tolstoi, there's not much to say about him. The book, though, has annoying typos here and there. Hopefully, they'll take a good look at it. The translation not always good, for example: "forty-two years old" instead of "twenty four", get it? An easy mistake from german.

An Important Historical Document, and a Great Read

When I saw this ebook, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A CORNISH SMUGGLER, I eagerly downloaded it and settled in for what I hoped would be tales of intrigue, danger and adventure on the high seas. The book is based on the manuscript of Captain Harry Carter, an Englishman who was born and raised in Cornwall, and who grew up to adopt the life of a smuggler.

But there's precious little about smuggling in this manuscript.

Most of the document written in 1809 by Carter describes his personal spiritual journey as a God-seeking Methodist after abandoning the illegal and harrowing life of a smuggler.

But I must also add that I was not entirely disappointed. His quest to find God and inner peace does not read like most of today's (or any era's) insufferable Christian tripe. Rather, Carter's journey projects more like the journal of an acetic monk. He pitches no dogma, offers no haranguing lectures and does no proselytizing.

His journey might better be compared to that of a Buddhist renouncing all the material illusions of the world, or a Hindu seeker determined to focus only on the transcendent, and a desire to merge with the omnipresence of Universal Consciousness.

Carter's strength is his ignorance, something he confesses to repeatedly throughout his many travails and travels. He possesses what Zen master Shunryu Suzuki called "beginner's mind." Innocent like a child, he uses the broad tenets of Methodism, but finds his own way with constant simple prayer, fasting, singing (chanting), and a refusal to strive and grasp for wealth. He never resists the aggressive forces which confront him along the way. He only doggedly seeks peace, anonymity and to be left alone.

Carter is like a spiritual Ulysses, buffeted about by the winds of chance and circumstance. Like Ulysses, he often finds friends and aid at unexpected moments. His post-smuggling travels take him all the way to New York - which must have been a fascinating place in 1789 - back to England and then to France where he was caught up in the Reign of Terror precipitated by the French Revolution.

He becomes a political prisoner, but his incarceration is light-handed and mostly "in-house." Carter demonstrates that a man who has absolutely nothing to gain, nothing to lose, and absolutely no worldly agenda cannot truly be imprisoned.

His aura of complete humility, his renouncement of all things material and his laser focus on aligning his soul with God is inspirational, no matter what your faith, maybe even for an atheist.

Even more famous than Harry Carter's was his older brother, John, who to this day enjoys a lustrous status among Cornish culture. In Cornwall, John Carter's star eclipses that of another legendary English social malcontent -- Robin Hood -- except Carter was certainly a real person and a real smuggler.

Smugglers were part pirate, part free-enterprise businessmen, part organized crime - but for the most part - few of them considered what they were doing wrong, even though they knew it was illegal under British law. The people of Cornwall were dirt poor. Their only options were to work seasonally in local tin mines as near slaves, scrabble out a living on a rocky patch of farm, or maybe eke out a living as fishermen.

Smuggling was a road to riches - it not only enriched the smuggler, but the loot trickled down considerably throughout Cornish society.

This document was published in 1900 under the auspices of John B. Cornish, who provides a helpful introduction and notes, and who is also listed as editor. A bit of Internet sleuthing turned up nothing about Mr. Cornish, so I'll leave it at that.

My bottom line is that I find this to be a remarkable tidbit of history. It may not provide much insight into the world of Cornish smuggling, but "Captain" Harry Carter is an endearing and admirable soul. I was delighted to to have met him through the words he left behind.

Fine Kindle edition of the classic Henry James story

The stories of Henry James can be obtained in a very great variety of editions, both printed and e-book, and at very low prices since most of them (perhaps all of them?) are now public domain and therefore no longer protected by copyright.

In fact, many can be obtained here on Amazon as free Kindle editions. I have personally had mixed experience with free (or very low priced) Kindle books, finding that at times they are poorly formatted, they may or may not include tables of contents and the ability to go directly to one chapter or another, and in some cases they have been made from scanned editions and contain errors in the text. They also generally omit any explanatory information on the author, publisher or copyright details (when first published, etc).

The Portrait of a Lady is considered to be Henry James's most popular work of long fiction, as well as being viewed by most critics as one of his finest. It is available on Amazon for free and separated into two volumes: The Portrait of a Lady - Volume 1 and The Portrait of a Lady - Volume 2, and in this case it does appear that those Kindle releases are satisfactorily done (scanning through the reviews here on Amazon to see what comments have been made regarding the Kindle edition) although I do not have them myself. Someone wanting to get this book should therefore consider those free releases as well, and as far as I can tell they will not be disappointed.

For myself I am generally very willing to pay a modest price for an edition that is well made and does have those features mentioned, and in particular to get an edition that is properly formatted for the Kindle and is free of text and editing errors. This edition is very inexpensively priced (it is selling for 99 cents here on Amazon as I write this review), and is very well produced for the Kindle. It includes Henry James own preface to the novel, and the complete text of the novel in two volumes. It does not include the glossary or notes frequently included in printed editions.

Also worth mentioning is that this novel, The Portrait of a Lady, exists in two different versions, both prepared by the author. The First Edition is as it appeared initially as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880-81. The New York Edition, extensively revised by James, was released in 1908 and is the version presented here in this Kindle edition. (The free Kindle editions mentioned above also use the 1908 New York Edition).

If I find myself looking for a Kindle edition to a book, and I am presented with a variety of choices that includes a version from this company, I feel that I can select their edition with confidence.

Accurate and complete electronic edition of James's finest "early phase" work - a masterpiece

In this marvelous novel, James hits his stride as a writer of subtlety and depth, while remaining eminently readable. We come to care deeply about Isabel Archer, and about those who surround her, those who should shape her destiny. But it is her own strong, if not always wise, will that crafts her life, her place in the world. This electronic edition is accurate and usable, and includes James's Preface to the novel (which Preface is his most famous and literarily acute).

Interesting look at woman's free sprit vs social conformities

I really enjoyed this book. The main character starts in America, moves to England and then to Europe. The plot keeps you guessing and cheering on the heroine. Four stars because it starts out slow and the ending you will have to decide if you like it or not. An interesting look at the freedom of women in America, to the laid back with some social rules England, and then to the restrictive woman's social, moral conformity in Europe.

Awesome, sexy fairy tales

I’m a fiend of fairy tales, so when I saw this three-book collection of naughty adult retellings of classic bedtimes stories, I had to download it. Included in this book are reimagined or “reversed” versions of “Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” and “Sleeping Beauty,” filled with a lot of kink, a healthy touch of romance, and bursting with hot heroes.

The first story is called “That the Queen Wills,” which is a reversed take on Cinderella. Young Eliot is abused by his two older brothers and has no costume to wearing to “The Gathering,” a stand-in for the original tale’s grand ball. Luckily, his rough day takes a turn when the house girl, Amelia, takes a bit of sympathy on him.

The next story is “Hunting Red,” author AJ Tipton’s twist on “Red Riding Hood.” Because the original tale has always fascinated me with its suggestions of lycanthropy and sexual undertones, this was my favorite story of the collection. Again, this is a familiar premise, but the twists are unexpected and incredibly hot!

This is a very well written and edited trio of tales. The chemistry between the characters makes for some super-sweltering sex scenes. Very reminiscent of the Anne Rice’s “Sleeping Beauty” series. If you love good fantasy and good erotica, don’t miss this collection!

Good stories

Reverse Fairy Tales? I'd say so! LOL. While not my thing it was written well. I think of all of them I enjoyed Breaking The Curse the most. First book is F/F/M JUST to warn you. They should have a warning for that because not everyone reads those type and they'd get a real shock lol. Enjoy AJ's work and she's got an interesting imagination.

I am so happy to have been given this book for free. It was great. I loved the the stories were reversed and so very naughty. They were a blast to read. Characters were fun and well written. The plots were truly re-imagined. Well done. Thank you .

Very enjoyable!

Written in the style of life in the early years when life was at a slower pace. Harold Bell Wright is a deeply religious man and this is lightly reflected in his writings. Each story is different and I enjoyed them very much. No offensive sex or swearing, just plain good reading from an old time story teller.

Can't say enough about this. Each of the stories keeps me riveted. The violence is not graphic, but we get the idea. "The Shepherd of the Hills" is an American classsic, not to be missed.

Great Read!

This is the first book I ever read as a kid on Daniel Boone many moons ago. I probably have half a dozen books on his life and adventures now, but this is still one of m favorites. I think the reason I like it above the others is John Backless style of writing, it flows and he has a great knack of putting the story together without it becoming stilted. There are many great books out there about Daniel Boone but no matter which one you have this is a must to get in my opinion. The ones out there written in resent years have a few more updated facts, which of course is interesting to know, but this is still a great read!

A narrative history of Daniel Boone

John Bakeless's biography of Daniel Boone was published in 1939. Except for a brief study by Reuben Gold Thwaites published in 1902, it was the first biography of Boone that was historically significant; many at the time called it definitive. Later biographies of Boone have been published (most importantly John Faragher's LIFE AND LEGEND OF AN AMERICAN PIONEER in 1992), but Bakeless's book is still relevant if no longer definitive.

Daniel Boone, the icon of the American pioneer, was born in Pennsylvania (a museum marks the spot of the original cabin in which he was born in Birdsboro) in 1734. Driven by land speculation and problems with the Quaker church, the Boone family moved to the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina. Here Daniel attended "the College of the Wilderness," learning all there is to know about hunting and shooting and surviving in the wilds (he had very little formal education and could write barely anything more than his name).

After a hunting trip to Florida, Boone in 1769 went on what turned out to be a two-year exploring/hunting excursion to Kentucky via the Cumberland Gap. A few years later, remembering the Gap, he began laying the Wilderness Road through it and settled what became known as Fortress Boonesboro. Conflicts with the Indians were frequent and in 1778 he was captured by the Shawnees, with whom he was a prisoner for three months. He escaped, however, and was back in Boonesboro in time to help defend it from the British and Indians.

Land troubles and ever the wanderlust compelled Boone to move from Kentucky with his family to Missouri, near La Charette. Here he farmed and dealt with the Indians and probably thought it too was becoming too tame and "crowded," but before he could move further west, he died in 1820.

Bakeless is an old-fashioned narrative historian who paints a large, colorful portrait of his subject and the world he inhabited. He is interested in the STORY of Boone's life and relates events in a narrative context. He doesn't neglect facts (indeed, many later Boone biographers have found little reason to alter his chronology or factual details), but stays away from political, psychological, and sociological analyses. He debunks legends where he can. Bakeless takes his subject seriously and relates his life in an interesting way. Still a joy to read.

This is one of the great biographies. It remains interesting and entertaining - and scholarly! - from first to last. It is one of those excellent reads that takes you back 200 years so that you can feel the autumn leaves under your feet as you slip silently through the great forests. If only the majority of biographies could be as well-written, well-researched and well-paced as this one. One of the best biographies of anyone that I have had the pleasure of reading. Highly recommended, even in the light of recent biographies of Boone.

Le livre est comme un rayon du soleil de midi qui frappe en plein visage et montre, sans artifices, toutes nos rides et nos défauts.
Ce ne sont pas des fables, au ton moralisateur, mais des vignettes, comme prises sur le vif, et qui laissent au lecteur le choix de les lire pour le plaisir ou pour réflechir.
On ne s'ennuie pas bien au contraire. Le rythme est rapide, les contes amusants, touchants et diversifiés.
A lire, absolument !

Lizzy was a delight as she gets a clearer image of his true ...

This was a different approach as the author interjected a masquerade ball at Netherfield. The famous ball where Darcy gets his dance with Lizzy takes a different turn as Bingley invites Wickham to join everyone. Lizzy was a delight as she gets a clearer image of his true character and yet a mysterious gentleman peaks her interest. You know the man and he is so light in his approach with her and even steals a kiss. This is a clean read though and I would have enjoyed more passion shared but I enjoyed their light conversations.

It was refreshing to see the pair sharing admiration for the other and longing looks at one another. Mrs. Bennet is not over done but you can be sure Lydia is her same dim witted, selfish self and Wickham vile as ever. Lizzy and Darcy even got married over the anvil which may offend some but I like new approaches so I just enjoyed the spontaneity. Jane and Bingley were also in there as was Georgiana. Darcy wrote this reassuring letter to her that was the sweetest words a brother could write and while on this subject the authors one flaw that made me cringe came at the end of her story. *****************SLIGHT SPOILER**********************

Wickham goads Darcy and shares this vile lie with him. Darcy has spent days on the road with the woman he loves. They have shared private moments where they talked freely and sketch the others character even further. This lie bugs Darcy to the point where he questions Lizzy's virtue and for me it made Darcy sound dumb and weak. I believed at this point to have him question her was bad form. The couple are so loving and trusting to this point it seemed a step backwards. Also after the words he said to Georgiana seemed hypocritical. While he was willing to marry no matter what and it being a brief moment it still sat wrong with the image the author had going on of him before the conflict started.

Enjoyable short story. Bingley decides to give a Masquerade Ball. Darcy hates this idea, but eventually comes downstairs. Lizzy has danced with Wickham, but conversation left her feeling he was not the person she thought. Upset, she seeks Charlotte and tells her what he said and inferred by his comments. Darcy overhears Elizabeth talking to Charlotte talking about him and it is not favorable. Knowing Elizabeth won't know if it is Darcy, he asks her to dance. She agrees, but isn't sure it is Darcy. The height could be him, but his manner of speaking isn't what she's used to with him. She steps outside when she sees Wickham headed towards her. See doesn't want to be with him at all. Darcy comes behind her and tells her she shouldn't be outside by herself. He offers to walk with her. At the reflecting pool, she is chilly, and he gives her the domino from his costume. She still not sure whether it is Darcy, but feels if it is, she's misjudged him. When she stumbles, he catches her and while she's in his arms, he misses her. She's only upset with herself, because she found that she enjoyed it. Darcy finds Wickham manner of speaking, in the library on top of Lydia Bennet. He is upset, because that day, Georgiana wrote and told him she doesn't want a Season in town, because no man would want a used bride. Anger over her confession plus Wickham's treachery in the library pushed him over his limit. Darcy challenges him to a duel. Wickham, like the skunk he is, leaves Meryton to hide in London. He is found and the duel is scheduled. Fitzwilliam is Darcy's second and warns him that Wickham probably won't fight fair. Sure enough, Wickham turns and fires before the last step was completed. Shoots Darcy in the abdomen, but Darcy did get a shot off. Unfortunately, he just took his ear off and didn't put the shot directly between his eyes. Darcy was very sick and almost died. He also missed Jane and Bingley's wedding. When Bingley comes to town, Darcy stopped letting the doctor in, and he got better. After regaining his strength, he travels to Netherfield to see the Bingleys, but really wants to see Elizabeth. Finding Elizabeth has gone to Hunsford, Darcy waits five days before leaving for Rosings. Georgiana is not happy about seeing Aunt Catherine, but Darcy says there's someone he wants her to meet. When he was ill and thought to be dying, he called out Elizabeth's name when both his cousin and sister was around. The colonel tells Darcy that Elizabeth is ideal for him. Since he's already in Kent, tells he better get here soon before he asks for her hand. When they visit the parsonage, Elizabeth notices that he has changed. After being in her company many times, he asks her to marry him. She says yes. Going to keep it secret until they both get ready to leave Rosings. Georgiana is told by her brother, but is told not to say anything. One night at dinner, Georgiana tells Elizabeth she wants to visit Longbourn. Knowing that Lydia has run off with Wickham, she says her house is a little chaotic, but later. Georgiana says oh, for the wedding. Lady Catherine hears her and asks whose wedding? Elizabeth tries to catch her by shaking her head no, but Georgiana quietly says, my brother and Miss Elizabeth. Lady Catherine is dumbfounded and quiet for a bit, then sputtered that Elizabeth leave the table now and get out of her home. Her famous speech to Lizzy in the garden at Longbourn in Austen's novel, now takes place at the table. Lady Catherine tells Collins that she must be gone first thing tomorrow. Elizabeth leaves with Georgiana, Colonel Fitzwilliam, and Mrs. Annesley for London. Arriving at Gracechurch Street, they find Darcy there with Elizabeth's father and uncle. Bennet is impressed with Darcy and has given his blessings to their betrothal. It is decided that Lizzy accompany her uncle and Darcy to Scotland. It is sad that Lydia is such a stupid, stupid girl. Her attitude and verbal responses to Elizabeth especially, deserves a good smack across her face. Wickham settles for what Darcy and Gardiner agree, are married over the anvil. Upon reflection, Darcy and Elizabeth did to marry over the anvil, too. They can always marry again in the church with a special license. Darcy and Elizabeth are very happy and when she tells him that their wedding night was different from what her mother told her, he was happy and as he pulled her closer, she reminds him to be proficient they must practice daily.

Surprisingly good!

Although in the beginning I did not have high hopes for this book, I was thoroughly surprised that I have enjoyed it as much as I have. Something abut the first few pages did not immediately captured my attention, so I put off reading it but reading two or three others before returning to this one. Luckily, I was completely wrong about the book and once I passed the initial pages I couldn't put it down and read the entire book(minus the first two or three pages) in a single night.
My only complaint is the ending, it was over rather abruptly.

A Very Contemporary Perspective

This book is about religious philosophy, as the title indicates, but it is not reserved to the Christian religion. It arises out of the author’s concern for young people and how they will need to struggle with the relationship between religion and the new discipline of science. He writes, “Our young people, it seems to me, are pushing bravely forward, marching between two high walls: on the one side modern science with its rigorous methods which it is no longer possible to ignore or to avoid; on the other, the dogmas and customs of the religious institutions in which they were reared, and to which they would, but cannot, sincerely return” (xiv).
He sets out to answer the question what is the essence, or principle, of Christianity and he rejects all denominational polemics claiming “all we need is a little history and psychology” (137). Sabatier’s engaging approach to philosophy became evident to me when he describes religion as the beginning of the childish form of science, which ultimately will give way to higher and more rigorous forms. Within these two perspectives of history and psychology, the attitude of Jesus, which we must adopt, plays a very important part in Sabatier’s theology. Jesus’ actions placed him at the centre of human consciousness to delve down to the source of life accessible to everyone.
The volume I read was published by George H. Doran Limited and is composed of three books: Book 1 on Religion, Book 2 on Christianity and Book 3 on Dogma. Part of Book 3 appeared as an independent lecture entitled, The Vitality of Christian Dogmas and Their Power of Evolution: A Study in Religious Philosophy (1898) which I also reviewed. While reading Sabatier I had a sense of an authentic engagement with the mind of the author. He was not simply rehearsing ideas reflective of discussions on the philosophy of religion. Thus, I was not surprised to read in the Appendix, “In this book I have hardly noted any but facts that have been verified in myself and by myself….Those who are able and wishful to re-read my book in themselves, and thus verify my analysis, may perhaps draw some benefit from it” (348). The title of the book notwithstanding, to my mind, Sabatier does not merely write about theology, he theologizes.

I enjoyed rhis book and found admiration for the authors ability to integrate ideas in a multidisciplanary way. It was an easy read and various complex ideas were made accessible to the reader. This is one I will probably refer to again as I am a humanities student...

About the Author

Anatole France (pseudonym of Jacques Anatol Thibault, 1844- 1924) was the most prominent French man of letters of his time. France's style was precise, elegant, gentle, ironic, and humorous. He was elected to the French Academy, and in 1921 was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. Some of his other works include The Aspirations of Jean Servien, The Revolt of the Angels, and Penguin Island.
