One Word to Describe this book: AMAZING

This last year has been is amazing in terms of new series. But in my opinion one of the best to come out was Rachel Aaron's Eli Monpress series. Eli Monpress like the books his series is full of witty dialog, likable, and full of surprises. Rachel Aaron just does such a fantastic job creating such likable and engaging characters that keep the readers glued to the page.
Of course after all this praise it should come as no surprise to anyone that I am a huge fan of The Spirit War. I received an early copy of the book, and within a day was done with it. It was that good. If anything Aaron has improved in this next to last installment in the series. All of the characters from Eli, to Joseph, to Miranda are given the chance for readers to see them in different lights. Joseph's back story gets fully flushed out, readers finally get the chance to find out why Eli chose a life of crime, and many of the mysteries of the Shepherdess are finally revealed as we learn about the stars, the shapers, and some of the events that have made the world the way it is.
Of course, the main characters are not the only ones to be looked into in this fantastic installment in the series. Both of Eli's parents and their relationship are explored. Readers will discover how Eli's parents met, why he ran away, and even why the split up.
While I love the characters in this book, the action and the surprises in The Spirit War are also superb. Joseph, Eli, Nico, and Miranda all face some of the toughest battles of their lives and readers will not soon forget these exciting events. Aaron does such a fantastic job crafting exciting scenes, characters, and witty dialog that readers will lose track of time, and wont be able to put down this captivating masterpiece until the last page, which will leave them speechless and begging for more.
All in all an amazing read that I would whole heartedly recommend to anyone. Everyone should read this series

A lighthearted fantasy it is no longer....not sure what I think about that

The Spirit War is Book 4 (Or book 2 depending on how you look at it) of the Eli Monpress series. In short a cat and mouse story between pair of wizards, a thief (Eli) and a law enforcing agent (Miranda) who can call upon elemental minions for aid.
This book starts right after book three, perhaps a week later. Eli's waiting to fawn over his new and increased bounty poster and discovers that his sidekick swordsman's bounty has not only increased but surpassed his. The reality is this is a summons for the swordsman to return home, and sulking all the way he goes.
Miranda is meanwhile being lessened of her ignorance and is traveling to the Shaper Mountain with Slorn the bear man to discover the truths of the world.
And finally after many references, we meet the Immortal Empress and her with irresistible influence, she's after Eli's hide.
The pace of this story was great, whip-lashing. No chapter was wasted and my hunger for more details was satisfied within the first few chapters after being starved for the previous books and many twists revealed. There was also a higher concentration of magic in War than the others which I also welcomed. I loved the characters more than ever, perhaps too much as you'll come to see.
I was disappointed a bit to find this book has become grim after liking the light hearted-ness of the previous three. Where the characters got into trouble, but all ended well or for the better. Predictable but something I appreciated in this depressing age where the world and fantasy is full of pain and torture and hardly the escapism it used to be. But this story really put that original concept through a one-eighty and left hardly any feel good moments that weren't smothered right away with an even worse disaster. Every protagonist is either at rock bottom and a couple, surprisingly, dead by the last page.
The deaths were shocking and painful as they should be, but nothing was accomplished by them (plot-wise) and they were just an added blow to the character's complete defeat. Punches weren't pulled, but it left nothing to cheer over. The theme seemed to be, give up, because not only is that how a conclusion is achieved but many characters would have avoided great losses if they would have simply stepped aside and nothing but the lives of unknown characters gained for their suffering.
I hate to sound so pessimistic but I'm still sulking over the emotional hammering in the final chapters. I guess the problem was that they only reacted to the Empress and never took any steps forward without taking twice as many back.
There were scenes in the beginning I really liked. Sparrow falling down a mountainside, Nico and Eli 'experimenting', the conflict between Sara and Banage.
So despite the depression it caused me, (but then I've always been overly sensitive to fictional characters). It was a solid book, with better writing, and a great addition to the series. I will probably have more to add once I feel like getting out of bed is a worthy goal. Until the world comes down on the Shepherdess in November, that's all for now.

Characters with too many issues

I have to say, I enjoyed the first couple of Eli Monpress books more than the second and third, because the first two were all about the caper. Three and four have become very serious, and in many ways standard, epic fantasy, filled with the clash of kingdoms, desperate magical battles and a sinister dark threat to the world.
It's well done, but it's not really what I signed up for based on the start of Book 1.
The other annoying thing, to me, is that four out of five significant characters are alienated from their parents (the fifth, Nico, doesn't know who her parents were). One or two, fine, but four (Eli, Josef, Miranda and Slorn)? It's pushing the theme too far. And there's really no counterbalancing situation where there's someone who gets on well with his or her parents, or a couple who are in love and together (not separated by tragedy and eventual death). The whole book is full of dysfunctional people, from the goddess Benehime on down. They don't just have issues, the have ISSUES, which somehow don't quite prevent them from saving the day when the crunch comes, but very nearly (and, of course, the day only needs saving because of ISSUES).
I'll definitely read the forthcoming book, which I take by the title, Spirit's End, to be the last one. I'm invested enough in the story to want to know how it ends. But I'm liking the characters less in every book.
