What a Difference a Century Makes...
By NyiNya
Written at the end of World War I, and by a Cornell profession of physiology...not a chef, not a housewife, not a nutritionist, this is not so much a book about what to eat when food is scarce and rationing dictates the menu as it is a look at how we grab the wrong end of the stick much of the time.

The book opens with a stern warning: Vegetables, particularly leafy greens, olive oil, and whole grains are a dangerous combination. You don't want to overdo that stuff. Why, according to Professor Lusk, he has studied Italian families who live on the stuff...and who are doomed. No way they're going to survive on this kind of fodder. Some of the information is actually funny, and the author's stern warnings about food that our own experts rave about -- and recommendations of foods that we're now supposed to avoid -- will have you grinning and scratching your head.

So, what's for dinner? "For splendid health, both of body and mind, a peasants' comparative immunity to indigestion, kidney and liver disease, as well as an absolute immunity to gout" try the following for your daily intake: Graham bread 1 pound; Potatoes 2 pounds; Apples 2 pounds; Milk 1 pint, This bread-potato-fruit diet provides the professor's essentials: milk, gluten and yeast. Add enough of these to your diet, he says, and you can skip other proteins, like meat. And the vitamins and minerals too, I guess. There are recipes for Graham bread, by the way, if you want to savor this particular treat.

Makes you wonder what people are going to say about our nutritional geniuses one hundred years from now!

Enjoy!

Revenge and romance , a great western story
By Reggie
This was a fun read. It began much like a typical western with a standoff between the neighbouring ranches. Then the reader discovered how the owners of the ranches had first settled the area together, how their families had flourished as their friendship had faded.

Chet Cunningham puts a human element into a story and elevates it above mere western. I became interested in the Texas range neighbours and their families and wanted to see them solve their issues. The only problem was, that revenge crimes just seem to escalate, and then a romance takes a hand in the story, and humanity prevails.

A great showing of a Texas Range War by Chet Cunningham.

CLASSIC RANGE WAR
By Sibyl Mory
A range war between Douglas Martin Hardy, owner of the Double Bar X Ranch, and Phil Montana, a rival ranch-owner, who were once partners, but have long fallen out. Is their valley not big enough for the two of them? There are disputes over the Big Muddy and water, and tit-for-tat reprisals involving burning down barns, scattering and stampeding herds, and poisoning cattle. Frany and Luke, their respective children, are in love, with Frany pregnant. Will their fathers' feud continue and end in disaster? Or will something happen to cause them to bury the hatchet and unite together as in the old days to face a common enemy? A classic Western tale of rivalry, friendship, range war and gunfights.

Don't Fence me in.
By Carol
We all know how feuds begin, sometimes it goes on so long both parties forget how it began, but every time one neighbor gets back at the other, the other neighbor escalates, and so on and on it goes, until one of both die. This book is a real page turner, and ever so difficult to put down. It has everything a western should have, cattle, horses, ranges, even a bit of romance. Now I know one possible way to end the feuding. Don't start in the first place. Can't thank you enough for this free to me book. I'll be reading it again sometime. Keep up the good work.

"[...] "It would prejudice your case mighty badly—that is, if you should try it and not succeed. On the other hand—but no; I won't say another word. Your best friend wouldn't advise you to make such a break. Besides, you have no money, and you couldn't get very far without it. I shouldn't even think of it, if I were you. Dwelling on a thing like that sometimes gives it a chance to get hold of you. But this is all foolishness, of course. You are going to Jefferson, and you'll take your medicine like a man if you have to. That's all, I believe, for the present. Keep a stiff upper lip, and if anybody comes to see you, don't talk too much. I'll be over at the county seat in a day or two, and we'll thresh it out some more." After Runnels had brought me my supper, and I had nothing to do but to wait for the constable and train-time, I did the very thing that Whitredge had advised [...]".

Tough to read
By Franklin Reid
I'm a fan of Francis Lynde books, particularly the railroad stories. But this one was harder to get through than the others. It seems there is just no hope for this protagonist and as you get near the end you begin to wonder if it's going to be a tragedy. But Lynde snatches victory by the end.

A COLLECTION OF APHORISMS, AND BRIEF STATEMENTS
By Steven H Propp
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, poet and composer, most known for his statement, "God is dead." He suffered a mental collapse, and spent the last eleven years of his life in a psychiatric clinic. He wrote many books, such as Basic Writings of Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, The Twilight of the Idols and The Anti-Christ, The Gay Science: With a Prelude in Rhymes and an Appendix of Songs, the posthumously-published Will to Power, etc. As a young man, he even tried his hand at composition [Complete Solo Piano Works].

[NOTE: page numbers below refer to a 182-page hardcover edition.]

He wrote in the Preface to this 1878 book, “Thus, then, have I evolved for myself the ‘free spirits’ to whom this discouraging-encouraging work… is dedicated. Such ‘free spirits’ do not really exist and never did exist. But I stood in need of them… in order that some good might mixed with my evils (illness, loneliness, strangeness… incapacity): to serve as gay spirits and comrades, with whom one may talk and laugh when one is disposed to… and whom one may send to the devil when they grow wearisome. They are some compensation for the lack of friends. That such free spirits can possibly exist… I, myself, can by no means doubt… May it not be that I am doing a little something to expedite their coming when I describe in advance the influences under which I see them evolving and the ways along which they travel?” (§2, pg. 7-8)

He states, “But deep thought can nevertheless be very widely sundered from truth, as for instance every metaphysical thought. Take from deep feeling the element of thought blended with it and all that remains is STRENGTH of feeling which is no voucher for the validity of knowledge, as intense faith is evidence only of its own intensity and not of the truth of that in which the faith is felt.” (§15, pg. 37-38)

He asserts, ”From this world of conception it is in the power of science to release us only to a slight extent… inasmuch as it cannot eradicate the influence of hereditary habits of feeling, but it can light up by degrees the stages of the development of that world of conception, and lift us… above the whole spectacle. Perhaps we may then perceive that the thing-in-itself is a meet subject for Homeric laughter: that it seemed so much, everything, indeed, and is really a void---void, that is to say, of meaning.” (§17, pg. 40-41)

He admits that “metaphysical views inspire the belief that in them is afforded the final sure foundation upon which henceforth the whole future of mankind may rest and be built up: the individual promotes his own salvation: when, for example, he builds a church or monastery he is of the opinion that he is doing something for the salvation of his immortal soul---Can science, as well, inspire such faith in the efficacy of her results? In actual fact, science requires doubt and distrust as her surest auxiliaries… At present the contrast between our excited ephemeral existence and the tranquil repose of metaphysical epochs is too great because both are as yet in too close juxtaposition..” (§22, pg. 48-49)

He argues, “What earthly reason could anyone have for being an optimist unless he had a god to defend who MUST have created the best of all possible worlds… but what thinking man has now any need for the hypothesis that there is a god? There is also no occasion whatever for a pessimistic confession of faith… But who bothers his head about the theologians any more---except the theologians themselves?... it is manifest that the world is neither good nor bad… and that these ideas of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ have significance only in relation to men, indeed, are without significance at all, in view of the sense in which they are usually employed.” (§28, pg. 56-57)

He asserts, “The most usual erroneous conclusion of men are these: a thing exists, therefore it is right: Here from capacity to live is deduced fitness, from fitness, is deduced justification. So also: an opinion gives happiness, therefore it is the true one, its effect is good, therefore it is itself good and true. Here is predicated of the effect that it gives happiness, that it is good in the sense of utility, and there is likewise predicated of the cause that it is good, but good in the sense of logical validity.” (§30, pg. 58-59)

He observes, “All judgments of the value of life are illogically developed and therefore unjust… No practical knowledge of a man… can be complete---so that we could have a logical right to form a total estimate of him… Perhaps it will follow from all this that one should form no judgments whatever… We are primarily illogical and hence unjust beings and can recognize this fact: this is one of the greatest and most baffling discords of existence.” (§32, pg. 60-61)

He contends, “One of the most usual errors of deduction is: because someone truly and openly is against us, therefore he speaks the truth. Hence the child has faith in the judgments of its elders, the Christian in the assertions of the founder of the church. So, too, it will not be admitted that all for which men sacrificed life and happiness in former centuries was nothing but delusion: perhaps it is alleged these things were degrees of truth. But what is really meant is that, if a person sincerely believes a thing and has fought and died for his faith, it would be too UNJUST if only delusion had inspired him. Such a state of affairs seems to contradict eternal justice. For that reason the heart of a sensitive man pronounces against his head the judgment: between moral conduct and intellectual insight there must always exist an inherent connection. It is, unfortunately, otherwise: for there is no eternal justice.” (§54, pg. 89-90)

He says, “To this very day many well educated men think the triumph of Christianity over Greek philosophy is a proof of the superior truth of the former---although in this case it was simply the coarser and more powerful that triumphed over the more delicate and intellectual.” (§68, pg. 100)

He states, ”There is a justice according to which we may deprive a man of life, but none that permits us to deprive him of death: this is merely cruelty.” (§88, pg. 109)

This book will be of great interest to anyone who enjoys Nietzsche’s writing.

About the Author
J.R. Biery has written for years and is finally publishing some of her more recent work. She wrote and sold fiction and nonfiction to magazines while a stay-at home mom. Loved entering writing contests and won several awards. After she began her career as a teacher, she found it was more satisfying just to continue writing but not worry about marketing. She did have one novel, Potter's Field, accepted and published by Advance Books, a small publisher no longer in business. "I prefer stories about ordinary people who are slapped by adversity and discover who they really are as they overcome the challenge. An avid reader, I began writing my own books in my twenties. I found writing, escaping into fantasy, to be a great source of comfort and relief from the stress of real life. No matter how big the problem, in fiction you can always write a satisfying solution." Since retiring, she has written eight new books and two shorter works and plans to continue publishing them on Kindle and Create Space. Enchanting And Captivating
By maybirdsong
Plan on being up late if you start Glitter of Magic in the evening, because you won't want to put it down.
Not being a fan of this genre, but after recently becoming a J. R. Biery fan, I had to give it a try. She didn't disappoint me at all. Glitter of Magic is beautifully written with Ms. Biery's usual touching sensitivity that will make you weepy at times in a heartwarming and endearing way. J.R. Biery writes with familiarity, knowledge and accuracy of historical facts. I always wonder if she is writing from personal experiences. Seriously doubting she has lived with faeries, it has to be just another example of what a truly talented and gifted writer she is.
Glitter of Magic made a believer out of me. I will be out in the garden this summer peeking under flower petals looking for the fairies. Glitter of Magic is one of those books you will remember for a long time.

This was my first book by this author. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading more of her work. The characters were endearing. I would love for my granddaughter to read this as it is not filled with violence and helps teach a lesson. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for books in this genre'.

Magical!!
By W. Stuart
Glitter of Magic by J. R, Biery caught my eye when I saw the cover and read the blurb. Here’s what I thought.

Synopsis (from the author): Aurelia, a young faerie, sacrifices all her magical powers to rescue a Knight after she causes his fatal fall. Without magic, her beautiful wings burst into flames and she changes from tiny sprite to human form. Lance is entranced by the sleeping girl when he awakens. He carries her home and finds she only complicates the conflict he has with his father over who to marry. Aurelia is the kind of girl he wants. The Earl of Locrine orders messengers to search adjoining lands to find where the mysterious young maiden came from and prepares to defend his castle. The only one who claims to know the girl is Lady Carmel Devonshire, the woman Lance has been trying to avoid marrying since returning from the crusades. Jealous of Lance’s attraction to the girl, Carmel claims Aurelia is her runaway servant. Her faerie friend Beryl stays to help her, but Aurelia finds the only magic left for her is when she is with Lance. In three days she must pass ten tests to prove she is a woman worthy to be his wife. If she fails, she will be taken in chains to Carmel’s dungeon after watching Lance, the man she loves, marry the horrible woman.

What I liked: One of the themes I like in books is the idea of friends, family, and sacrifice. I enjoyed the way Aurelia sacrificed her life as a fairy to save Lance. That was a neat idea to me. Lance, the knight that Aurelia saved, wakes to find her and takes her back to his castle. From that point on, their story is one of intrigue, romance, and trials. Aurelia’s fairy friend Beryl plays a key role and I enjoyed her character. Filled with magic, romance, and a good storyline, Glitter of Magic was a good read!

What I didn’t like: I thought the book could have used a little bit more editing and polish. The character of Lady Carmel was too stereotypical for my taste, and the conflict between the Earl and Lance was predictable. These issues didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the book, though.

Overall impression: Glitter of Magic was a charming read. I enjoyed the way Aurelia adjusted to the human world, the sacrifice she made to save Lance, and the blossoming of the love between Lance and Aurelia. I do think a little more editing and polish would have made this a great read. As it is, it’s a very good read!

My rating: 4 Stars

The most influential of the Gothic horror novels
By Daniel Jolley
The Monk is perhaps the most significant and certainly the most controversial of the Gothic novels of the late 18th century. Amazingly, its author, nineteen-year-old Matthew Lewis, wrote the novel in a period of only six weeks. Although inspired by the work of Ann Radcliffe (among other Gothic writers), Lewis goes far beyond the sensibilities of his predecessors and does not choose to explain away the supernatural events fuelling this inflammatory novel. The Monk is a tale of human evil in its most vile form; the unspeakable acts described in these pages are committed by the supposedly most devout individuals in society. The Catholic Church was incensed with the novel's publication, and it is actually quite remarkable that The Monk was published at all and that its author faced nothing more dire than censorship and indignant protest as a consequence of it.
Ambrosio is the most celebrated, revered monk in Madrid (in the era of the infamous Spanish Inquisition) - his sermons attract crowds far too large to gain admittance to the sanctuary, and everyone holds him up as a veritable saint walking the earth. His fall from grace is precipitous indeed. Secretly, Ambrosio is vain and proud, blissfully assured of his own near-perfection. At the first temptation of lust, however, this holy man reveals himself to be the ultimate hypocrite, giving in rather easily to the type of desire he rails against each Sunday. After learning that his friend Rosario is in fact a lovely woman in disguise named Matilda, he revels in the love she declares for him and quickly becomes her secret lover. Quickly and ever more thoroughly consumed by his new-found passion and carnal lasciviousness, he grows tired of the ever-willing Matilda and turns his perverted eye toward the sweet and wholly innocent young Antonia. Through the witchcraft of Matilda, he comes to consort with demons in the sacred crypts underneath the abbey itself, giving up his morality and piety in the blind pursuit of actions worse than mere rape.
Ambrosio is not the only hypocritical, secretly sinful church official in Madrid, however. The prioress of the convent bordering the abbey is a sickeningly cruel and spiteful agent of perfidy herself. When she discovers that Agnes, one of her novitiates, is pregnant, she is so mortified at the impending shame this fact will bring down upon her and the convent that she resorts to the most barbaric of punishments for the poor and pitiable young lady. While her crimes do not quite exceed those of Ambrosio, the devastating consequences of her sinful acts result in long-lasting, deeply grievous repercussions.
The novel takes a while to really come together. After seeing Ambrosio in his publicly sanctimonious guise and watching his pitiful descent into the passions and lusts inspired by Matilda, we spend a great deal of time becoming acquainted with Antonia, Agnes, and the gentlemen who love them and will eventually fight bravely to try and save them both physically and morally from their sad fates. The story of the Bleeding Nun apparition is an important part of this section of the book and gives the reader his first real introduction to the supernatural aspects of the story. It is almost possible to forget about Ambrosio completely for a time; when he returns to the story, however, he commits unspeakable acts and profanes the very name of the God he supposedly serves in such excess that he earns a permanent spot in the annals of literature's most despicable villains.
It is in the crypts, among the moldering corpses of the dead, that the most blasphemous acts take place. Antonia's fate is quite horrible, but it is actually Agnes' tale of woe that takes the reader to the most horrific of extremes. Just when the worst seems to be over, we learn in graphic detail the almost unimaginable extent of the ordeal suffered by Agnes and her innocent child - the tale is quite gruesome even by today's standards, almost unimaginably so by those of Lewis' own time. The suffering of the innocent Agnes and Antonia is, in my opinion, unparalleled in the realm of Gothic horror.
Even some critics who are less than found of the Gothic horror genre have embraced this novel, partly because it does distinguish itself from the more Romantic writings of an author such as Ann Radcliffe. As such, it seems less pretentious and much more visceral than the typical Gothic tome. Lewis holds nothing back in presenting his portrayal of evil in the hearts of men and women. There is a love story aspect to the events surrounding Agnes and Antonia, but the author does not indulge in flowery descriptions of love, nor does he concern himself with rapturous expositions on the beauty of nature. There is very little of beauty to be found in these pages at all, and what innocence exists is ultimately lost at the hands of corrupted servants of God. With such complexity underlying the plot, The Monk is open to a number of interpretations, and its microscopic portrayal of evil's power to overcome the best of men and women continues to fascinate and leave a lasting impression on one generation of readers after another. Even in our own time, The Monk is more than capable of shocking the reader with its unbridled revelations.

The Ultimate Gothic Classic
By A Customer
Matthew Lewis wrote "The Monk" in ten short weeks at the age of nineteen. Immediately the subject of controversy upon its publication in 1796, Lewis was prosecuted and subsequent editions of the book were heavily censored. Coleridge described it as blasphemous, "a romance, which if a parent saw it in the hands of a son or daughter, he might reasonably turn pale." Yet, "The Monk" was so popular that its author became a minor celebrity-coming to be known as "Monk" Lewis--and Sir Walter Scott prounounced that "it seemed to create an epoch in our literature." And whether "The Monk" truly created an epoch in English literature, or merely marked the early apogee of a genre, it stands as a stunning example of the Gothic novel.
"The Monk" tells the story of Ambrosio, the ostensibly pious and deeply revered Abbot of the Capuchin monastery in Madrid, and his dark fall from grace. It is a novel which unravels, at times, like the "Arabian Nights", stories within stories, a series of digressions, the plot driven by love and lust, temptations and spectres, and, ultimately, rape, murder and incest. It is sharply anti-Catholic, if not anti-clerical, in tone, Ambrosio and most of its other religious characters being profane, murderous, self-centered hypocrites cloaked in displays of public piety. And while it sometimes seems critical of superstition, "The Monk" is replete with Mephistophelian bargains, supernatural events, appartions, and spectres, as well as entombment and dark forebodings of mystery and evil. It is, in short, a stunningly entertaining, albeit typically heavy-handed, Gothic novel, perhaps the ultimate classic of the genre.

Stories with the story
By K. C. Vogel
The Monk is a wonderful Faustian tale. However, this is far from just being about the monk himself. All the side characters get their chance to tell their tales. With each new story you realize when it was done, "Oh, yeah, forgot about the rest of the story." All of these overlapping tales do come together quite well. Be warned that the opening is a bit slow but like in a Dickens book you must pay attention to the beginning as it all gets wrapped up in the end.

The one drawback I saw was that of characters who are so emotionally distraught that they have to take to their sickbeds in grief. Guess when you have money you can afford to waste away for weeks. Makes me wonder how these people would handle the strain of having teenagers.

That aside this is a marvelous read and a true classic. If Faust wasn't already out there then this could have easily taken its place. For here we see the downfall of false piety and the triumph of true nobility of character. Oh, yes--there are also ghosts, murder, and broken hearts a plenty.

Could not put this book down!
By suefein
Edith Wharton and Henry James were great friends. They traveled together and both wrote about the privileged classes. But that's where the similarity ends. Wharton does not go in for incredibly long, tortured Jamesian sentences. Her prose is deceptively simple. But the book is DEEP. At the end of the book it was said that in the Age of Innocence, NY in the late 1870s, everything was known in close personal relationships without having to say anything. That could almost be said of Wharton's book as well. Excellent book. I highly recommend reading it.

Great Writing Still Holds Up Today
By Debra Purdy Kong
Young attorney Newland Archer is engaged to the lovely May Welland and feeling entitled to a life consumed with all the comforts and rituals that his family’s circle of wealthy New Yorkers enjoy. At the turn of the twentieth century, appropriateness in dress, manners, marriages, and relationships is everything. Straying from the fold is not only frowned upon but will turn one into a social outcast, which has happened to May’s cousin Ellen who married a European Count then left him with the help of another man. Countess Olenska’s unconventional attitude appeals to Newland immensely, especially since he’s begun to wonder if marriage to a woman who doesn’t question anything or think for herself might be a tad unsatisfying. The more he ponders this, the more intrigued becomes with the countess. Soon, he questions his entire life.

While the story of snobbish people living useless lives wouldn’t normally interest me, the fact that Edith Wharton wrote it and won a Pulitzer prize for her novel does. I understand why the novel earned such high praise. Wharton writes with the same mild undertone of amusement and mockery that Austen did with Pride and Prejudice, yet Wharton’s subtle layers of cynicism and despondency give the story an edgy feel at times. The conflict between expectation and following one’s heart is beautifully portrayed through Newland’s anguish and regrets.

Despite my hesitancy over the subject matter, I enjoyed this novel. Admittedly, there were far too many characters growing pale during those awkward moments when something is said that shouldn’t be, but what else could they do when outbursts just weren’t done in those days? Having said that, I do believe that the quality of Wharton’s writing still holds up to today’s literary authors.

WHY THIS ENTRANCING BOOK SHOULD NEVER HAVE BECOME A MOVIE
By R. Corey
Edith Wharton is a master of the psychological in drawing her characters. We are pulled slowly through the story by the silken threads of behavior until we are bound with the story and its people in an inexorable knot.
She is the only writer, besides Dickens, who can make me shed tears.

The Complete Short Stories of Lu Xun where included in these edition:
A Madman's Diary; Kung I-chi; Medicine; Tomorrow; An Incident; Storm in a Teacup; My Old Home; The True Story of Ah Q; Village Opera; The New Year's Sacrifice; In the Wine Shop; A Happy Family; Soap; The Misanthrope; Regret for the Past; The Divorce; The Flight to the Moon; Forging the Swords.

Two brothers, whose names I need not mention here, were both good friends of mine in high school; but after a separation of many years we gradually lost touch. Some time ago I happened to hear that one of them was seriously ill, and since I was going back to my old home I broke my journey to call on them, I saw only one, however, who told me that the invalid was his younger brother.

"I appreciate your coming such a long way to see us," he said, "but my brother recovered some time ago and has gone elsewhere to take up an official post." Then, laughing, he produced two volumes of his brother's diary, saying that from these the nature of his past illness could be seen, and that there was no harm in showing them to an old friend. I took the diary away, read it through, and found that he had suffered from a form of persecution complex. The writing was most confused and incoherent, and he had made many wild statements; moreover he had omitted to give any dates, so that only by the colour of the ink and the differences in the writing could one tell that it was not written at one time. Certain sections, however, were not altogether disconnected, and I have copied out a part to serve as a subject for medical research. I have not altered a single illogicality in the diary and have changed only the names, even though the people referred to are all country folk, unknown to the world and of no consequence. As for the title, it was chosen by the diarist himself after his recovery, and I did not change it.

Chinese masterpiece!
By A Customer
In this book by Lu xun, a greatest Chinese fiction writer in the history, you will see some influence from Russian literature, such as Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy, yet Lu xun manages to keep the Chinese atmosphere by the vivid descriptions on things he sees in China. "Diary of a Madman" is absolutely wonderful. Comparing it to Gogol's story of "Diary of a Madman" it is interesting how Lu xun explores the reality in such a different way from Gogol and still cuts one side of humanity open to the readers. If you like Chinese poetry, this book by Lu xun is a must! It's nothing like any novels written by Chinese Americans because you feel the sense of China in his stories while you can relate to all the characters' mental pain and suffer through his gorgeous language. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy ethnic literature, Russian literature, and Chinese poetry, or those who simply enjoy literature.

A master piece of translation
By A Customer
I walked into Standford University bookstore on Sunday afternoon and saw the translation of 'Diary of a Madman'. I flipped through the pages and saw the short story 'Ah Q - real story' so I grabbed one book just to see the translation. As a student grew up in Taiwan, I knew Lu Xun's stories in Chinese well in high school. Actually even some of his work was in high school Chinese Literature curriculum. But I could not put it down until I finished reading the translation of 'Ah Q - real story'.
It is really a masterpiece in translation. The translator is both master in Chinese and English. I like the introductions, a foreigner's introduction about an author is more in reality, dealing both success and failure of Mr. Lu's life. Besides, as the translator said he tried to imagine what Mr. Lu would said if his native language is English. He really captured the essence of it. I really like it. It is a great way to know English style from an Engineer major point of view.

Vibrant, Alive, Earthy Translation
By Meow Tomcat
I have compared the Lyell translation to the established one by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang (Selected Stories of Lu Hsun Foreign Languages Press, Peking, 3rd edition, 1972). The Lyell translation embraces the spirit of the original Chinese in American English. The Yang translation is understated in typical British English. Compare this passage from New Years Sacrifice:

Yang version:
In one hand she carried a wicker basket, in which was a broken bowl, empty; in the other she held a bamboo pole longer than herself, split at the bottom: it was clear she had become a beggar.

Lyell version:
In one hand she carried an empty bamboo basket; a broken bowl lay inside it-- empty. With the other hand she supported herself on a bamboo pole that was taller than she and had started to split at the bottom. It was obvious that she had become a beggar, pure and simple.

The Lyell version is more descriptive, with a more active tense. Not shown here (because the Amazon editors objected) other passages have American colloquialisms and earthy, realistic and profane language. The Lyell version is more vibrant and alive. The 33 page introduction is illuminating for probing Lu Xun's motives and purpose in writing as well as touching on the art of translation. I counted 16 full page black and white illustrations to complement the stories. The only criticism is the book binding that is stiff and prevents the book from lying flat.

The stories are: (1) Diary of a madman (2) Kong Yiji (3) Medicine (4) Tomorrow (5) An unimportant affair (6) The story of hair (7) A passing storm (8) Hometown (9) Ah Q-- the real story (10) Dragonboat Festival (11) The white light (12) Some rabbits & a cat (13) A comedy of ducks (14) Village opera (15) New Year's sacrifice (16) Upstairs in a wineshop (17) A happy family (18) Soap (19) The eternal lamp (20) A warning to the people (21) The venerable schoolmaster Gao (22) The loner (23) Mourning the dead (24) Brothers (25) Divorce.

The Early Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald (Dover Thrift Editions), by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dover Thrift Editions

"Ideal for students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the literary works of an iconic American author. Very highly recommended." ― The Midwest Book Review
Although better known today for his novels, in the 1920s F. Scott Fitzgerald ranked among the top writers of magazine fiction. Fitzgerald represented the dreams and aspirations of the post-World War I generation in his life as well as his works. With his glamorous wife, Zelda, and cosmopolitan social circle, the gifted young wordsmith projected the perfect image for narrating tales of restless youth in a hectic world.
These short stories offer insights into many themes, characters, and techniques that emerged in Fitzgerald's later works. "Winter Dreams," written three years before The Great Gatsby, shares the concept of commitment to an idealized dream. "Babes in the Woods," developed while the author was still a student at Princeton, evidences the roots of This Side of Paradise. A dozen other selections ― including "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The Camel's Back," "The Four Fists," and "The Cut-Glass Bowl" ― offer further insights into the author's growing skills as well as individual examples of his sparkling prose, understated wit, and deft characterizations.

An Enjoyable Collection
By M. Dowden
Frances Scott Key Fitzgerald is of course better known to us all as just F Scott Fitzgerald, and without any doubt he was one of the greatest writers we have ever seen. This collection of short stories that we are presented with here appear in chronological order and take in the years 1917-1922. Alas for quite a few people reading ‘The Great Gatsby’ at school and having to spend time analysing it this has put them off reading any more by this author, which is a great shame.

I personally have read all of Fitzgerald’s stories many times, and I have never grown bored with them, enjoying immensely his short stories as well as his novels. ‘This Side of Paradise’ was his first published novel and as you can see here he was writing short stories before then and in this collection some of these tales were first published after that novel.

It has to be remembered that Fitzgerald had been writing from quite an early age and was being published whilst still at university, and so even with the earliest short story here there is a certain lightness of touch and confidence showing through. Of course for many Fitzgerald epitomizes the Jazz Age and the Flapper Girls, but he does give us so much more than just that. This collection takes in a writer who was still experimenting to a certain degree to reach the stage he is best known for, and so there are humorous, serious and fantastical style stories here, the latter of course being ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’. You can see in these tales the forerunners to his novels where the same themes are starting to be looked into by a keen and attentive mind. In all this is a book that never disappoints and is well worth reading.

I was kindly provided with a review copy of this by the publisher via NetGalley.

A great collection of early writings by a master
By Wayne A McCoy
'The Early Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald' is a great collection of work from the writer of 'The Great Gatsby.' The stories are from as early as 1917 up through 1922.

There is quite a range of emotion in these stories. From the humorous to the melancholy to the outright sad to the strange. There are spurned lovers, and a boy who ages backwards. There are men who can't escape their station in life, or their destiny in the war. There is a camel costume and a cursed cut glass bowl. There are outdoor activities like boating and skiing and golf. The characters seem quaint at times, but always familiar. The writing may be from earlier, but the stories are all worth reading. If you haven't read 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' but you've seen the movie, you should read it here to see how much got changed.

I enjoyed reading these stories. They act as a time capsule of a unique era, but they also reflect much of the yearning of people today. The stories are nearly 100 years old, but I can still see people I know in them. They may not wear flapper era clothing or camel costumes, but they feel familiar nonetheless.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Dover Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Tales told in such an intriguing and captivating manner in that dazzling Fitzgerald style...
By Bill Baker
What is extraordinary about these early Fitzgerald stories is how well they are written for someone so young, and most of the tales here are quite different from one another though there are some similarities in theme and construction.

Yet the stories’ inherent worth lies in that dazzling style, so much better than most writers’, and their ability to show us that at least from Fitzgerald’s view, what life was like for a certain class of people nearly a hundred years ago in such an intriguing and captivating manner.

Very Fun and Funny!
By karmelk
This is a sequel to Lady Betty Across the Water. Lord Percival "Val" Loveland is Lady Betty's cousin.
Discovering that the heiress he had hoped to marry had eloped with an Italian prince, Loveland is convinced by his mother that he should follow his cousin's lead and find a wealthy spouse in America. Funds are low, so he pawns his mother's rare pearls to get the boat fare and expenses. He's soon on a ship for America with several letters of introduction from his new Cousin-in-law, Jim Harborough. Unknown to Loveland, Jim has a plan to humble him a little in New York. Cocksure of having no trouble picking from a bevy of willing members of the 400 (New England's millionaires and in-crowd), Loveland starts courting right on the ship. A few rich men and their daughter's are on board, as is Lesley Dearmer and her aunt, Mrs. Loveland (no relation - but the name on a deck chair starts their meet-cute.) But she's not rich or connected, so Lord Loveland has to mix with the high society types onboard ship. He has qualms and tries to tell her he loves her before they disembark in New York. She stops him, knowing that he's not the man for her...not yet and maybe not ever. Through a series of planned and unplanned events Loveland is accused of' being a criminal, and kicked out of the Waldorf and denied money at the bank.
The rest of the story has many twists and turns. Loveland is humiliated and forced to work to eat in a bread line and sleep in a shelter. He gets work in a greasy cafe, and loses that job after heroically saving lives in a fire. He then joins an acting troupe just trying to earn his boat fare home. This leads to more adventures. It a rollicking ride and one I enjoyed immensely.
I would have like a longer ending, a little more details on his HEA. But really, a great read.

Delightful little romp, somewhat dated (one does not use derogatory terms for servants nowadays), but the story was sweet, predictable, but sweet....a fun read...
