Grade 9-Up Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel of Puritanism giving rise to twisted gender politics, hypocrisy, and strength of character in the face of public scorn is well realized in this reading by Annie Wauters. She gives individual tone and rhythm to each of the main characters, while keeping the passages of narrative relatively uninflected. While this suits the author's own sometimes dry writing, it means that listeners must get to the second hour before the story truly gets underway. Since this lengthy forepart fits almost entirely onto the first disk, and each chapter is clearly marked as to track number on the packaging, it is possible to simply skip ahead rather than give up what becomes a delightfully lively listening experience once the romance gets going. Because the reading adheres so entirely to the print in spirit as well as in word, this is an excellent choice for students who cannot access print or who would like to accomplish college prep reading while undertaking other activities. Sturdy packaging makes this a shelf ready purchase.

This is not the book you hated in high school . . .

There are so many things I could say about this book, but should I reach the heights of elegance achieved only by Shakespeare, Hawthorne himself, or Faulkner, I could not overcome the horrible, terrible misconceptions most people have formed after having this beautiful novel foisted upon them in high school. Instead, I'll share a few observations and some tips for reading.

First, this is a complicated story. It's not about evil Puritans and hero Hester, although you will read this point of view in the cheat note summaries on the internet. It's not about feminism, really, nor is it about religion in any technical sense. The only comparison that really fits is that of love story, or love triangle, or maybe love square. (I told you it is complicated.) In all of literature, there are very few writers who have penned characters so incredibly real and well-rounded. When you finish the novel, you KNOW these people. Certainly there is some minor societal commentary, but the real story here is about these people.

Now, I'm assuming that many people looking at this page have been told they must read this book for high school English. As a former teacher of said subject, I have some pointers.

(1) Make sure you read the book for yourself. Chances are (in our current educational system) your teacher is going to have a flat interpretation of this book, likely gleaned from some ready-made teaching packet. (If you have another kind of teacher, consider yourself lucky.) You can have some very interesting class discussions if you actually read the material and challenge some of the majority opinions about the novel. Be a rebel. Have some fun in English.

(2) Read *The Custom House* introduction, but wait until after you've finished the book. It's only good in that it explains Hawthorne's view of his own book (difficult and painful) and reveals his struggle to write it. The writing style, however, is decidedly un-Hawthorne and more difficult to read than the rest of the book. If you read it first, you will be unfairly biased against the novel.

(3)Read it SLOWLY, if at all possible. The storyline is complex and should be read with care. I would also recommend underlining and taking notes, if your copy of the book allows it. You will develop a truly deep appreciation of the work.

(4) Finally, avoid the Demi Moore 1995 adaptation AT ALL COSTS. Words cannot describe how awful it is. And if your hope is to find something to help you on the test, the only real similarities are the character's names and the red patch on Hester's dress. If you must see a film version, find the PBS miniseries with John Heard and Meg Foster (made in the 1970s). It does the best job that a film possibly could with this material.

Good read, but hard to navigate ebook

I have long wanted to read this book by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was one of the first books I downloaded when I got my kindle 2. The character portrayals are superb. It analyses the thoughts, motivations, strengths and weaknesses of the four major characters in the story - Hester Prynn, the vengeful doctor, the hapless minister and Hester's vivacious and elf-like daughter Pearl. The description of the little girl and how she copes with being ostracized with her mother by a rigid puritanical society, is especially moving. While there are some descriptions of nature that are quite vivid, most of the text goes into developing these four characters and is a fascinating psychological study, though at times it's little slow.

Overall, a well-crafted story and a good read.

The book though is hard to navigate on the kindle because it has no active table of contents. I therefore would not purchase this version at regular price. Luckily, it's free!

"The Scarlet Letter"

Like many reviewers here, I was "forced" to read this book for my English Composition class. However, unlike many reviewers here, I have a much different view of the story. As some people have said before, Hawthorne's book takes a good deal of concentration, effort, and strength to understand. Not only to understand, but to finish. The story can drag sometimes, it is true, and Hawthorne's style of writing occasionally leaves something to be desired (I don't think I've ever seen that many commas, 15 letter words, or page long paragraphs before), but we simply must look past these minor issues. Overall, the plot is highly creative and intense, despite the writing.\
Ok, ok, I agree that the first chapter, "The Custom-House", was pretty bad. In fact, it was so bad and boring that I drifted off to sleep several times while reading it! The first chapter has little relevancy with the story, so, unless you have to, I would suggest skipping that part of the text. The rest is exceptionally good, and the quality of the plot cannot be overlooked. My advice is to just lay off the first chapter; that way you'll be able to enjoy the rest of the book without difficulty.
The story itself deals with sin and adultery, a subject that isn't very popular right now. Hawthorne does an excellent job of telling us about this, but he leaves the reader with many questions floating around in his mind at the conclusion. At the end of the story you're not 100% sure if Hawthorne was condemning the Puritan society, or if he was commending it. He leaves that for the reader to figure out, which is a thing authors seldom do. That's a major reason I believe this work is so unique and timeless.
The story involves a women named Hester Prynne, living in the New World in the late 17th century. She has committed adultery with someone unknown, and, since the Puritan society considered the Bible to be their ultimate source of law, the punishment was quite severe for such an act. Hester is forced to wear a scarlet "A" (for adultery) on her attire at all times, as a sign to everyone that she has sinned deeply. And so she must carry out the rest of her life this way. That's the major gist of the plot, although there's much more. I won't give it anyway, though, you'll have to read the book to find out.
Let's face it: at some time or another we all are going to probably have to read this book, voluntarily or involuntarily. Shouldn't we try to make the best of it? Read it for its enjoyment, anything else would be missing the point.

About the Author
Allen French was born on November 28, 1870, in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University in 1894 and for several years, beginning in 1908, taught English at his alma mater. His first interest, however, was history, and his contributions to historical writing are many and varied. Of special interest to readers of his Story of Grettir the Strong are his books Rolf and the Viking Bow, and Heroes of Iceland, an adaptation of Njal's Saga. Also of particular interest to young readers are his Sir Marrok: A Tale of the Days of King Arthur, The Red Keep: A Story of Burgundy in the Year 1165, and The Lost Baron: A Story of England in the Year 1200.

Great life lessons!

My kids and I read this book together. It was a bit of a hard read with the old Iceland English, but it was worth the tongue-tied moments as the lessons of this book were great...mostly lessons about pride.

A great story with great memories!

I first read this book as a boy of 11 in the late 1950's. It was the first full-sized book I'd ever read. The story of Rolf and the Viking's Bow awakened in me a love for books that has remained with me all these years. The memory and impact of this book have stayed with me as well. After recounting my experience with some friends whose son was just getting interested in reading I decided to read the book again. I'm so glad I did. At my first reading it was a story of adventure for a boy looking for more than comic books could provide. Upon this reading I discovered that it was so much more. Rolf and the Viking's Bow is a story of deception, betrayal, murder, revenge and forgiveness and even a little happily ever after at the end. Highly recommend!

Enchanting Period Romp

A great period romp, involving ridiculous deceptions, impossible situations, and quite a lot of (period-appropriate) fun while traveling through Holland in the early 1900s.

It is a little rambly, but the authors were likely being paid by the word, so I will forgive them. It also has a nice trick, where the narrator's POV shifts and continues on with the story, where you get to find out some things that the other narrator didn't know. The characters had distinct voices, and it was a pleasant story.

The conversion was pretty good, as well - no glaring issues.

A delightful romp through Holland, with sweet and funny characters, confusions and callings in love...everyone is beautiful, fairly well-off, young and confident, everyone loves all the landscapes and scenery, and all the confused does-he-love-me plots pan out, at the end, of course...a good time is had by all..even the dog..
Perfect vacation read....

This is using an early automobile, and there is much travelog. The story ends in a hard thump, as if the authors ran out of paper and were in a hurry to finish it.

Cross and Double-Cross

It's good to see another of E Phillips Oppenheims books reprinted. I first read "The Great Impersonation" as a teen, and later started looking for other titles. Oppenheim was a prolific author; over the years I have accumulated nearly 100 of his titles from various used bookstores. Something about his writing style seems to set him a notch above the other suspense and intrigue writers of his era. There are a few clunkers in the bunch, but "Havoc" isn't one of them.
Havoc is set (and written) in 1910, when the countries of Europe were in a thicket of plots and alliances. All the pressures that lead to WWI are there, but the intrigues and secret treaties create an interesting background to the twists and turns of the plot. The story revolves around the creation of a secret alliance between Germany, Russia, and Austria. The English hope to split Russia away by holding the Czar to his previous public commitments, but they need proof of what was done to create the pressure.

Good Read

I have spent many enjoyable hours reading E. Phillips' novels. As in any good novel, the reader wants to get to the end and see what happens, resulting in some late nights.

These novels are for the period of the late 19th century and on up to the 1930's. Most are set in England with travel to the Continent. I remember one that was set in the US.

Somewhere I read that E. Phillips wrote 146 novels. I have probably read 30 and will be interested in finding more.

A frequent theme is about England not being prepared either for WW I or WW II.

These novels are probably not for everybody, but I have found them interesting in looking at the culture of the times.

It also is a look at the politics of the times when "the sun never sets on the British Empire".

The Kindle dictionary is helpful as some of the vocabulary is out of date.

The fact that they are free is icing on the cake!

The Origins of World War One

From the perspective of today (2014) it is hard to understand how a war as devastating as the First World War could arise from the assassination of an Archduke in the small city of Sarajevo. Writing four years before the start of hostilities in World War 1, Oppenheim gives an excellent account of the passions and politics which emboiled the continent.

The beautiful Serbian Diva Madamoiselle Idiale is in Vienna for a grand performance, as is her lover, the British spy Bellamy. Louise Idiale is devoted to the cause of her people, the Serbs, giving them money and supporting their ambition to be free from Austro-Hungarian domination. Also meeting in Vienna are the Emperor of Germany, the Emperor of Austria, and the Czar of Russia to discuss a secret military alliance. By chance an American newspaperman comes into possession of a memorandum from the meeting. Before the novel ends it will change hands and bring many deaths.

Into this political background Oppenheim weaves a story of speculation, financial ruin, murder and theft in The City of London. Stephan Laverick is an investment banker who has taken Arthur Morrison, a Jew, as his partner. Speculation on Morrison's part has brought the firm near ruin. Seeking to flee the country, Morrison leaves the firm and dissappears into the night. Shortly afterwards, by chance, Laverick comes upon a murdered man who has 20,000 pounds in a wallet in his coat.

Weaving these various strands of finance and intrigue, along with romance and violence, into a web of suspicion, is classic Oppenheim fare.

A subplot concerning Laverick provides a curious window on social views toward Jews in England at the time. Oppenheim describes the two partners:

"Stephen Laverick, senior member of the firm, although an air of steadfast gloom had settled upon his clean-cut, powerful countenance, retained even in despair something of that dogged composure, temperamental and wholly British, which had served him well along the road to fortune. Arthur Morrison, the man who sat on the other side of the table, a Jew to his finger-tips notwithstanding his altered name, sat like a broken thing, with tears in his terrified eyes, disordered hair, and parchment-pale face. Words had flown from his lips in a continual stream. He floundered in his misery, sobbed about it like a child. The hand of misfortune had stripped him naked, and one man, at least, saw him as he really was."

Later Laverick comes to meet Morrison's stepsister Zoe Leneveu who is described:

"She smiled for the first time, and Laverick thought that he had never seen anything so wonderful as the change in her features. The strained rigidity passed away. An altogether softer light gleamed in her wonderful eyes. She was certainly by far the prettiest child he had ever seen. As yet he could not take her altogether seriously...

...Somehow or other, he had never associated Morrison with relations. Besides, this meant that she must be of his race. There was nothing in her face to denote it except the darkness of her eyes, and that nameless charm of manner, a sort of ultra-sensitiveness, which belongs sometimes to the highest type of Jews. It was not a quality, Laverick thought, which he should have associated with Morrison's sister."

What a startling example of paternalistic racism!

Indeed, Lie's skippers and mates are as superior to Kjelland's, for instance, as the peasants of Jens Tvedt (a writer, by the way, still unknown beyond his native land) are superior to the much-vaunted peasants of Björnstjerne Björnson.
But it is when Lie tells us some of the wild legends of his native province, Nordland, some of the grim tales on which he himself was brought up, so to speak, that he is perhaps most vivid and enthralling. The folk-lore of those lonely sub-arctic tracts is in keeping with the savagery of nature. We rarely, if ever, hear of friendly elves or companionable gnomes there. The supernatural beings that haunt those shores and seas are, for the most part, malignant and malefic. They seem to hate man. They love to mock his toils, and sport with his despair. In his very first romance, "Den Fremsynte," Lie relates two of these weird tales (Nos. 1 and 3 of the present selection). Another tale, in which many of the superstitious beliefs and wild imaginings of the Nordland fishermen are skilfully grouped together to form the background of a charming love-story, entitled "Finn Blood," I have borrowed from the volume of "Fortællinger og Skildringer," published in 1872. The re-maining eight stories are selected from the book "Trold," which was the event of the Christmas publishing season at Christiania in 1891. Last Christmas a second series of "Trold" came out, but it is distinctly inferior to the former one.

Jonas Lauritz Idemil Lie (Norwegian: 1833 – 1908) was a Norwegian novelist, poet, and playwright who is considered to have been one of the Four Greats of 19th century Norwegian literature, together with Henrik Ibsen, Bjornstjerne Bjornson and Alexander Kielland. Jonas Lie was born at Hokksund in Ovre Eiker, in the county of Buskerud, Norway. Five years after his son's birth, Lie's father was appointed sheriff of Tromso, which lies within the Arctic Circle, and young Jonas Lie spent six of the most impressionable years of his life at that remote port. He was sent to the naval school at Fredriksvaen; but his defective eyesight caused him to give up a life at sea. He transferred to the Bergen Cathedral School (Bergen katedralskole) in Bergen, and in 1851 entered the University of Christiania, where he made the acquaintance of Ibsen and Bjornson. He graduated in law in 1857, and shortly afterwards began to practice at Kongsvinger, a town located between Lake Mjosa and the border with Sweden.

Cold, grim, wonderfully weird

Jonas (Lauritz Edemil) Lie was one of Norway's most prolific nineteenth century novelists. The son of a town sheriff, he grew up above the Arctic Circle in the city of Tromsø, where his youthful impressions of the wild sea-going life provided material for many of the stories in this collection, first published in 1893. "Weird Tales from Northern Seas" was originally written in Danish, which was the official language of Norway for many centuries.

As you might expect from your reading of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen these tales of the Northern Seas are not only weird, but grim. Grimmer than Grimm I should say. The supernatural beings that haunt the shores and depths of the sea are uniformly malignant--including the merfolk. Even a seal "looked so evilly and viciously at him with its bloodshot eyes...that Elias thought he should have died on the spot for sheer fright."

Of course, the seal turns out to be a 'draug'--a demon peculiar to the northern Norwegian coast. In revenge for a wound that Elias had inflicted on it, the draug lures the fisherman's entire family out to sea and kills all but one in a peculiarly horrible manner.

And that's just the first story in this book. "Finn Blood" which the editor refers to as "a charming love story" is filled with Finn-bashing, evil magic, and of course, draugs. This story has a great line that summarizes the atmosphere of the whole book:' "He ...laughed and grinned complacently at his own narrations, the humor of which was always a wreck or a drowning."

Grim as it may be, this is a wild and wonderful collection of eleven tales that are filled with the sound and deadly magic of the far North.

Jonas (Lauritz Edemil) Lie was one of Norway's most prolific nineteenth century novelists. The son of a town sheriff, he grew up above the Arctic Circle in the city of Tromsø, where his youthful impressions of the wild sea-going life provided material for many of the stories in this collection, first published in 1893. "Weird Tales from Northern Seas" was originally written in Danish, which was the official language of Norway for many centuries.

As you might expect from your reading of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen these tales of the Northern Seas are not only weird, but grim. Grimmer than Grimm I should say. The supernatural beings that haunt the shores and depths of the sea are uniformly malignant--including the merfolk. Even a seal "looked so evilly and viciously at him with its bloodshot eyes...that Elias thought he should have died on the spot for sheer fright."

Of course, the seal turns out to be a 'draug'--a demon peculiar to the northern Norwegian coast. In revenge for a wound that Elias had inflicted on it, the draug lures the fisherman's entire family out to sea and kills all but one in a peculiarly horrible manner.

And that's just the first story in this book. "Finn Blood" which the editor refers to as "a charming love story" is filled with Finn-bashing, evil magic, and of course, draugs. This story has a great line that summarizes the atmosphere of the whole book:' "He ...laughed and grinned complacently at his own narrations, the humor of which was always a wreck or a drowning."

Grim as it may be, this is a wild and wonderful collection of eleven tales that are filled with the sound and deadly magic of the far North.

Great lessons on character

Because it was written by the author of the words to "Onward Christian Soldier," it caught my attention. Great lessons on character. It was also amazing to see the changes we have in society: a woman had no choice but to stay with her husband even if he,,, but then I'd give away the story!! Good read. Old English was a bit of a challenge, but worth it!

Not Sunshine and Rainbows

I came to this book via The Moor by Laurie R. King and while I enjoyed it, it is kind of a dark book. I don't want to say more and spoil things. It does go with reality I guess because not all is rainbows and laughter in this world but it was a little bit too nitty gritty for me.

"Reginald Philip Graham Thursford, Baron Travers, Marquis of Mandeleys, issued, one May morning, from the gloomy precincts of the Law Courts without haste, yet with certain evidences of a definite desire to leave the place behind him. He crossed first the pavement and then the street, piloted here and there by his somewhat obsequious companion, and turned along the Strand, westwards. Then, in that democratic thoroughfare, for the first time since the calamity had happened, his lips were unlocked in somewhat singular fashion.

"Well, I'm damned!" he exclaimed, with slow and significant emphasis."

The Marquis is a perfect gentleman of the old school: mannered, impecunious, amusing, and cultured. He is the owner of the Manor of Mandeleys, but it is heavily mortgaged. A family servant, Richard Vont, was given a cottage at the end of the lawn, and refuses to sell it back. The Marquis has bankrupted himself with lawsuits seeking it's return.

To complicate matters, The Marquis has been the lover of Vont's daughter Marcia, for twenty years. This has created such enmity that Vont left for America with his nephew David. David returns a millionaire, and is intent on completing the devastation of the Marquis, and his estate. If only it wasn't for the Marquis beautiful daughter Letitia....

Although this novel was published in 1919, its setting and subject is more consistent with a pre-war period. The morality of the Marquis, and his attitude towards other people, is clearly a product of the 19th Century. The "droit du seigneur" is even invoked several times in the story. There is an interesting interplay among the characters regarding the evolution of morals, the rights of women, the effect of rigid moralism, and religious inflexibility.

Great Historical Piece

This is an enjoyable read by Oppenheim, although dated. The characters that matter are fleshed out nicely, and the way the revenge works out is done masterfully. The Marquis of the title isn't so much wicked as he is mired in a previous era - I couldn't help sympathizing with the characters that had to deal with him. Worth the read if you're into historical fiction.

Important for Understanding the Era

Confession is supposed to be good for the soul. My confession is that I was aware of Mahan's seminal work on sea power for decades and included discussion of it in my history classes (FYI, I taught high school history for 13 years after 30 years in the Army.), but I had never read it.
The author clearly states the time period, 1660-1783, under study at the beginning. I would have preferred him to have started with the defeat of the Spanish Armada by the English in 1588, especially since he gave so much attention to the Punic Wars.
Although written in in 1889, Mahan foreshadowed the territorial gains made during the Spanish-American War almost a decade later when he stated the need for stations in the Caribbean. However, stating that "Such colonies the U.S. has not and is not likely to have," he did not anticipate that we would retain the Philippines as a colony.
While recognizing this book focuses on sea power, I feel that Mahan should have given some details on what was happening on the ground. For example, he give no details on the capture of Quebec.
I was disappointed that there was no concluding chapter. The ending with the treaties signed at Versailles in 1783 seemed abrupt.
Mahan's work had a major influence on the shaping of nations' military force structure for decades. Teddy Roosevelt and Winston Churchill are two among many who embraced the concepts contained in the book.

Outstanding (!) Insights to the influence of geography and technology on policy --- should be required reading for all would be "COOs". Although written more than a hundred years ago Mahan easily translates into post modern considerations. When combined with John Boyd's analytical constructs Mahan's writings provide a basis for real post modern strategic thinking.

This was one of my absolute favorite novels when I was young. I even have the real book in German. I wanted to have it on my kindle, so that I can read it again whenever I have time, which is usually when I travel. I have always loved historical novels and I still do.

Awesome book in really good edition

There is little reason to write anything about the book itself. The edition is really neat and the translation is also very good. There are a couple minor type errors here and there, but they are very sparse.

Great option if you can't find the print edition

Thank goodness for me that someone digitized this book though crudely done at best. If you don't have the option of examining a print copy this will work.
