A Colourful Edition

This is a weighty wee book, and an extremely enjoyable edition of one of Lovecraft's disturbing tales. Part of the pleasure of reading the edition is to turn the page and come upon an extremely colourful illustration for the story by Pete Von Sholly--there are 14 illustrations in ye book, some presented as two-page spreads. . S. T.'s brief Introduction discusses Lovecraft's difficulty in writing the story and those works that may have influenced HPL's plot. The story is so good, and yet, as stated in ye Introduction, "Lovecraft was so doubtful of the tale's quality he refused to submit it anywhere, so August Derleth took it upon himself to to send the typescript to Farnworth (sic) Wright [that shou'd be Farnsworth Wright, editor of WEIRD TALES], who rejected it for the same reasons he had turned down AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS: the story was very long and not easily divisible into parts." Brian Yuzna (who brought H. P. LOVECRAFT'S RE-ANIMATOR to ye screen) discusses his film adaptation of the story, DAGON, a film that perfectly captures the grotesque, monstrous, alien quality of the Deep Ones that Lovecraft so brilliantly portray'd in his story.
What of Lovecraft's ability to develop character in this story? E'ch-Pi-El is so often criticized for a supposed inability to portray character, but this critique seems to ignore the fact that an emphasis on character may have been totally out of place in the stories as Lovecraft wanted them presented; and it ignores the fact that Lovecraft's narrators are in themselves compelling characters who succeed in pulling us imaginatively into the events they narrate. Lovecraft has an ability to suggest potent character with just a few strokes of suggestive description. The one really colourful character in this story, "old Zadok," is perfectly portray'd, serving his narrative function of supplying information and an aura of danger that then becomes actual during the chase scene. [SPOILER ALERT!] The ending of "The Shadow over Innsmouth" is of interest if we regard Lovecraft's presentation of the Deep Ones as a manifestation of his racism: for at the story's conclusion the horrified white man embraces his alien taint: "I shall plan my cousin's escape from that Canton madhouse, and together we shall go to marvel-shadowed Innsmouth. We shall swim out to that brooding reef in the sea and dive down through black abysses to Cyclopean and many-columned Y'ha-nthlei, and in that lair of the Deep Ones we shall dwell amidst wonder and glory forever." Note the very subtle artistic touch, where "rumour-shadowed Innsmouth" becomes "marvel-shadowed."
The stories that follow Lovecraft's tale are those stories which may have influenced Lovecraft and inspired his writing of "The Shadow over Innsmouth"; and Bob Price's excellent essay is one of his finest and most fascinating, a brilliant study.
