horrors of war in a book written for teenage girls

Aunt Jane's Nieces in the Red Cross, first published in 1915, is the 10th and final volume of this series written by L. Frank Baum under the pseudonym of Edith Van Dyne. In this volume Uncle John and his two nieces Beth and Patsy are at home in New York when they are visited by two of their California friends A. Jones and Maud Stanton. Jones has just sailed his ship through the new Panama Canal and Maud is preparing to go to Europe to become a nurse to help wounded troops in World War I. Beth and Patsy want to help Maud and soon wealthy Uncle John and Mr. Jones, who is called Ajo, have converted Ajo's vessel into a hospital ship, hired a surgeon and outfitted two ambulances.

This is the most daring plot of the series, which usually has the cousins solving minor mysteries as they engage in some new project like running an election campaign or a newspaper, or vacationing in Italy, California, or upstate New York. Baum plunges his characters into the battle zone on the border of France and Belgium, and has them dodging shells as they scoop up wounded soldiers to treat on their boat. The book explores the true horrors of war in a book written for teenage girls at a time when women didn't yet have the right to vote.

Written before US involvement in the war, the book portrays the problems of a neutral hospital ship on the front line of battle. Both sides are suspicious of their intentions and they have a hard time staying impartial. The ship leaves abruptly after only three months, feeling that they are unable to fulfill their mission. The book portrays well the feelings of US citizens watching the European war. They want to help but are stymied on all sides by their neutrality. Baum revised the book after the US entered the war in 1917, rewriting the ending to show the group actively supporting the Allies and staying much longer.

I really enjoyed this novel and it kept my attention throughout the whole story. It is not like typical war books that just constantly gives you facts about war and soldiers’ lives. It gives you a story of how young girls decides to become nurses during the war and you get a glimpse of what it was like for them to help heal the wounded. This is a fiction book, but the information about the Great War is true. It is a fun and exciting read, but you are learning history at the same time. Once you get into the story, it is really hard to stop. I would definitely say that this novel is a page turner. Dyne will make sure that you feel that you are with the young girls in the war and feel the emotions that are flowing through them. You will feel the intensity of the fighting, bombs, artillery, and chaos all around the soldiers. You can also get a sense of women empowerment because these girls did not have to risk their lives save the brave soldiers at war. They could of just stayed home and read about the treacherous war in the newspapers. This goes to show that children, the three American girls, can make a difference in peoples’ lives. This novel describes how people viewed the war. It was brutal and unpleasant. Many innocent lives were killed. The Great War weighed heavy on many hearts. If you love history then you will enjoy this novel. Dyne made a series based off of Aunt Jane’s Nieces, so you should read those as well.

maturing beyond the prison of self

This is my personal favorite among Dickens novels, fully equal to Bleak House, though not nearly as widely read or admired. Most reviewers miss the fact that debtors prisons had long been closed before Dickens wrote the novel, so 'reform' was in no way its objective. What he really wanted to explore was self-imprisonment. His main character, Arthur Clennam, has been imprisoned by family strictures all his life. Denied love as a child, exiled from his sweetheart as a young man to an outpost of the family business in China, left by his father only with a watch inscribed 'DNF' meaning 'do not forget' (what he doesn't know) Arthur returns to England. We first see him 'imprisoned' in quarantine with others who suffer spiritual incarcerations of their own. The spiritual heart of this novel is the story of how Arthur loses hope that he can 'go home again' and pick up with his old life, how he reconstructs a personal life and satisfying work, and how he endures the collapse of the past and all its guilty debts, ultimately being set free to live life on a new foundation. This novel will hearten those who have arrived in the middle of our lives feeling that like Arthur, we stand among ruins, 'descending a green and growing tree' whose limbs die and wither under us as we come down. But when he is finally stripped of everything, Arthur gains all. While this great bildungsroman of maturity is being carried forward, Dickens offers a wealth of characters, plots, and subplots that will keep Dickens lovers turning pages in well-founded faith that Boz will once again knit all together in a satisfying tapestry of incident and meaning. It could be summed up as "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." All the characters are jailed by something--Little Dorrit herself by her prison home, her father by his dependency and pathetic grasping for reputation. Blandois, the wicked murderer, shows up first in a Marseilles prison and bestrides the plot with his vile presence. Arthur's mother stays voluntarily imprisoned in a decaying house and her wheelchair, and worse, in wrath and jealousy. We also meet a housemaid trapped in uncontrollable rage, the woman who abducts her, walled in pride and hatred, a young woman trapped in adoration of a worthless husband, parents frozen in grief over a lost child, a financier transfixed with the knowledge of his own falsity . . . and more. Secrets, nightmares, murders, lost deeds and treasure, stolen fortunes, all abound in this vivid and satisfying plum pudding of a novel. Modern readers may weary of the satirical chapters on 'the Circumlocution Office'--but they're no worse than the treatment of the Court of Chancery in Bleak House. The best of this novel is that it is not all written just for the satisfactory settlement of some young person, but rather for the arrival at full maturity of a man who is already adult at the novel's opening. Arthur (one remembers that Britain's legendary king bore that name) rescues others from despair, and finally learns to let others so rescue him. This is a redemptive novel, that shows us it is possible to see that we are inside the prison of who we've been taught we are, and believe we can't stop being, and it is possible to break beyond those prison walls and 'go down to a life' of quiet decency and common happiness. A great, grownup read!

My favorite Dickens novel

I truly don't understand why this novel is not more widely read or discussed. Thanks to the BBC dramatization, it has been saved from obscurity. Even though the television adaptation is quite good, it is no substitute for reading the full text of the book. I would disagree with those who say this was not one of the author's best novels; on the contrary, I feel it is one of his very best. Dickens wrote so many great books of which I am a fan. Among my favorites are: Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield. Of all these masterpieces, Little Dorrit is my absolute favorite. I heard somewhere that Shaw felt Little Dorrit was Dickens's best work. Who am I to argue with Shaw? I believe many critics and those who study Dickens would agree. Ironically, the work was wildly popular during Dickens own life when it was published in serial form. In fact, that is the best way to read the novel...in small portions. You will choke to death if you try and consume it in one bite. This novel is too big and rich to devour quickly. I had a difficult time getting into the book after the initial few chapters but was richly rewarded as I continued on. This is not a book for lightweights. The length of the book is quite intimidating, the plot is complex, and the characters numerous; that being said, it is well worth the effort to read. I could not put it down as I came to the last few hundred pages. I absolutely loved it by the time I finished the book. It is one of Dickens's darker novels, which may put some off. Even so, many, if not most, of Dickens novels deal with unpleasant topics, and there is quite a bit of humor (Flora, her aunt, Afferty...) in Little Dorrit to balance the darkness. In fact the book is full of balance - wonderful Dickens prose, masterful characterization, as well as one the best plots ever devised. As others have said so well, this novel stands up to multiple readings. I certainly plan to reread and savor it many times.

I would give it six stars if I could

This is a long book - it feels like a 1000 pages - but it is a masterpiece. Dickens takes us from Marseilles, home to an evil man whose smile makes his moustache disappear under his top lip and draws us into a dark, damp, murky Victorian London where one's whole future existence seems to be mapped out at birth, and where to escape from one's perceived 'destiny' is both sacriligeous and impossible. The Marshalsea Prison is a place all of us can visualise - a debtors prison from which many fail to escape, the dubious honour of the Father of the Marshalsea bestowed on the longest-serving inmate. Little Dorrit - Amy - is the daughter of the Father of the Marshalsea and this is her tale, one which stretches across the grime of smoggy nineteenth century London to the pollution of Continental Europe. The cast of characters is fascinating and Dickens rarely misses a trick - each is easily comparable to people any of us knows today. I studied this book at school and I have read it four or five times since.

Yes, he was talking to his wife! She could remember the time when he used to linger in the door, talking to her, so many last words to say, and when at last he would turn away with a kind "Well, good-by, Mary! Don't work too hard."

But that seemed ages ago to the poor woman who was left this morning in the wretched little room with the door slammed between her and her husband. She did not look as though she had life enough left to make words about anything. She sat in a limp heap in one of the broken chairs, her bared arms lying between the folds of a soiled and ragged apron.

Not an old woman, yet her hair was gray, and her cheeks were faded, and her eyes looked as though they had not closed in quiet restful sleep for months. She had not combed her hair that morning; and thin and faded as it was, it hung in straggling locks about her face.

I don't suppose you ever saw a kitchen just like that one! It was heated, not only by the fierce sun which streamed in at the two uncurtained eastern windows, but by the big old stove, which could smoke, not only, and throw out an almost unendurable heat on a warm morning like this, when heat was not wanted, but had a way at all times of refusing to heat the oven, and indeed had fits of sullenness when it would not "draw" at all.

A Secular Messiah in England on the Brink of War

Maraton, a populist demagogue has left America in the wake of riots in Chicago (Haymarket? Pullman?) which have killed several protesters. He arrives in England in 1914 which is riven by class warfare and teetering on the brink of war with European enemies. He is greeted by Julia Trendheim and her brother, fervent Jewish socialists, who have long awaited his coming. But first he meets with the Prime Minister, Lord Foley, and encounters his beautiful niece, Lady Elizabeth.

Maraton espouses a radical program of general strikes to bring all of English industry to it's knees, and begin a decades long struggle for redistribution of wealth. In many eloquent speeches he argues for the cause of the poor. Lord Foley, on the other hand, sees England's enemies waiting for a massive labor action to cause the country to fall apart, at which time they will invade and conquer. Maraton is besieged by opposing forces who try to draw him to their side: Labor Party MP's, foreign agents, the distinquished author Selingman, and the German ideologue Mar.

Before WW1, labor unrest, divisons of class society, and the advent of Socialism, Communism, and Syndicalism were the pressing political and social issues. The poor had been driven deep into misery by the industrial revolution, urbanization, and lack of education. This simmering stew is the subject of this interesting novel by E. Phillips Oppenheim. He portrays Labour Party rallies, unionist politicians, and upper class society with equal realism. Many speeches show the desperation of the poor, and the intrinsic appeal of socialism. Europe (particularly Germany) had preceded England in the empowerment of the workers. This was a threat to England both before and during the First World War.

An Enjoyable Old-Fashioned Novel

Rex Beach was a best-selling novelist during the first several decades of the last century. Best known for his first work, The,Spoilers, a novel about the Gold Rush to Nome in 1900, Beach's many subsequent novels have been, in the words of several literary specialists, "merifully forgotten." Heart of the Sunset, published in 1915 and set in northern Mexico and Texas's Rio Grande Valley is one of those later books. Formulaic and loaded, it is filled with a slew of "bad guys," a brawny and heroic Texas Ranger, a ravishingly beautiful love interest and who knows how many other cliched characters. Will Dave get the girl or will the evil Mexican General Longorio win the day? Will justice triumph and love conquer all? Three guesses.

No-one reads Rex Beach today looking for great literature. He was a product of his times, giving an anxious public exciting contemporary stories to suit their reading tastes. Today's more sophisticated readers, on the other hand, will find little to draw them to this work but personally I enjoyed it a lot. Heart of the Sunset is enjoyable kitsch and a fun read to wile away a few hours.

Enduring, original, and always entertaining Anne Shirley!

The ANNE OF GREEN GABLES series is one of the most unforgettable, and one of the most enjoyable, series of all children's literature. This series chronicles the life and times of Anne Shirley.
Anne Shirley is the plucky, imaginative, red-haired orphan. Her parents die when she is baby, and so she spends the first 11 years of her life going between homes and orphanages, with no one really wanting to keep or to love her. By a mistake, she is brought to Avonlea--instead of a boy--to be adopted by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a pair of farmers who never thought they would be raising a girl in their old age.
You may want to skip this next part of my review, because I am going to sum up each book briefly. No plot spoilers will be revealed, but some of the contents will, and if you haven't read all the books, then maybe you don't want the content revealed ahead of time.
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES covers a span of Anne's first 5 years in Avonlea. She will age from 11 to 16. Her immortal antics that have made this book so beloved include her rivalry with Gilbert Blythe, dyeing her hair, and falling off of Mrs. Barry's roof...
ANNE OF AVONLEA spans two years. Anne is 18 at the novel's finish. She has become a teacher. Marilla adopts twins. Also, Anne has some more humorous and immortal moments.
ANNE OF THE ISLAND spans 4 years--Anne college years at Redmond. She will be 22 at the end of the novel. Anne discovers the real meaning of romance and love and courtship in this novel.
ANNE OF WINDY POPLARS also known as ANNE OF WINDY WILLOWS covers the 3 years of Anne's engagement to Gilbert. She is a Principle at Summerside High School where she has to deal with the Pringle clan, Katherine Brooke, and plenty of other interesting folks.
ANNE'S HOUSE OF DREAMS covers the first two years of Anne's married life. She and Gilbert now live in Four Winds Point, 60 miles east of Avonlea. Gilbert is making a living as a doctor, and the Blythes have new and interesting neighbors. **My favorite book of the series.**
Note: there is about a 6 year break between AHoD and AoI.
ANNE OF INGLESIDE covers about 6 years. Anne and Gilbert have moved to Glen St. Mary, near Four Winds Point, and now have children. This novel covers the birth of Rilla to the 15th wedding anniversary of Anne and Gilbert. More about Anne's children's adventures than Anne herself.
RAINBOW VALLEY takes place in 1 year. It is about Anne's children, and more specifically their neighbors, the Merediths--Faith, Una, Jerry, and Carl--and Mary Vance, but Anne does come in at important points within the novel. Faith is reminiscent in many ways of the young Anne.
Note: there is about a 9 year break between RV and RoI.
RILLA OF INGLESIDE is a heroine in her right. She ages from 15 to 19 during World War 1, the setting of this novel's time period. Anne is by now in her 50s and is a background character, but Rilla is a delightful and outgoing heroine with or without her mother.
This series was meant to be loved and reread and reread. Read the books in chronological order, or read them out-of-order but you'll still find them as fresh and enjoyable and as humorous as the first time you read them.
***Montgomery wrote some books about Anne's neighbors in Avonlea (CHRONICLES OF AVONLEA, FURTHER CHRONICLES OF AVONELEA) and in Glen St. Mary (THE ROAD TO YESTERDAY). And so if you enjoy the Anne books you might enjoy those books as well---although any Montgomery book is a reccommended read.***

The most wonderful books in the world

When I was in high school I was a mean, black leather wearing, heavy metal girl. A long time friend forced me against my will to read the first "Anne" book and my life has been so much more beautiful ever since. These books made me see the magical beauty in nature, bosom friends, family, imagination, and even crabby old ladies (this last has come in handy on many occasions). I now have made a point of buying the set for every girl I consider a friend. I am now 23, and when I have children of my own, girls or boys, I will read them "Anne" as soon as they can understand what I am saying. If you liked the "Anne" books I would also recommend books by Louisa May Alcott (Little Women)and Frances Hodgson Burnett (A Little Princess)

True Classic - In TRUE Original Form

This 100th Anniversary Edition is just what it purports to be: a republishing of the original work, with original cover art.

What the displeased readers below don't seem to realize is that the typos and lack of proofreading are part of the TRUTH about how this book was originally treated/printed. It was neither respected nor expected to do well (although the publishers -- and the author -- were quickly proven to have underestimated the gem that is Anne).

If you're looking for a modern treatment of this classic story, with every "t" crossed and "i" dotted, then this is not the edition for you.

If you're interested in imagining Maud Montgomery's true feelings, as she read her first printed novel, both her thrill at its mere publication and her resigned displeasure at the typos and misspellings, then this edition offers you a glimpse at the real condition of Anne's first publication, 100 years ago.

A Treasure Chest of Re-Imagination!

This is truly a collection to savor. I love not only the number of stories included, but the variety of ways that each story is re-imagined by a talented group of authors. This is the first time in many, many years that I've read any book slowly, delighting in the directions these stories take. I'm three-quarters of the way through, and I have yet to find a story I have not enjoyed!

Twice Upon a Time is an anthology of fairytale retellings and cover everything from the Grimm Brothers, Hans Christian Anderson, fables, myths, as well as numerous folklores. Each fairy tale has been interpreted and retold differently and the myriad of authors who contribute have created stories that reimagine fairy tales in beautiful, unimaginable, and captivating ways.

What is wonderful about this collection is each story takes a different approach; while some may stay true to the darker or original story in many ways, others deviate completely and have been reworked into completely new stories that are sometimes a world away from their originals. In doing so, there are delightful stories about romance, magic, and true love alongside stories in other worlds and battles with giants in space, hidden dangers, wicked witches, or dark bloodthirsty creatures from the deep. But no matter how much a story seems to stray from the primary story, there is always an element of the original under the surface, connecting its origins back to the well known classic and keeping the fairy tale alive.

Every story is different and there is no doubting the creativity and imagination of the authors to recreate fairy tales and fables in such ways. Everything from The Grimm Brothers to and fables and myths in-between is covered, some easily recognisable others not so much, though this all depends on your own knowledge of fables and fairy tales.

There are a few peculiar ones and certainly not all will be to everyone's liking, but with so many stories and numerous styles of story there are bound to be more than enough to satisfy every lover of fables and fairy tales alike. Even if not every story is appealing, there is no denying the work and creativity that went into each one of these stories. The approach each author has taken to these stories is clever and commendable, and they are certainly stories you can return to and reread over and over again. I really hope that one day this anthology is recognised as a great addition to the ever growing collection of fairy tale retelling.

Full of typing errors

Loved the story -- but this Kindle version was full of typos. Hardly a page without one, which was a distraction for me.

Great Story

This is a great story, one that I enjoyed reading during a rainy weekend at home. It's a comforting story in Louisa May Alcotte's typically descriptive writing style, which I love.
