An invaluable find!
By Dr. Dennis
William Winter was a long-time 19th century New York theatre critic and poet; he was great friends of all the great actors and actresses of that day, and corresponded with them as well. His descriptions of their playing style bring back the actor to life and help the layman to visualize their performances and judge their popularity. While his writing is flowery as suits the style of the day, Winter is clearly in love with the theatre of his time and the actors of his day. The reprint of his book is a great find for theatre historians and performance historians.

The Crew have never been strangers to tragedy…
William Healthaway’s family has proven to be quite resilient. Surviving an unprovoked attack by the Damned and defeating the evil warrior Tetron, however, hasn’t guaranteed a happy ending for the family. Still reeling from the loss of his children and plagued by nightmarish images from the Civil War, William must overcome his grief in order to unify his family and prepare them for the impending revenge, certain to be meted out by the Damned.
Unexpected peril presents itself in the form of hate and prejudice from an unlikely source—the townspeople the Crew have live lived among for much of their lives. Rumors of witchcraft, unprovoked attacks and an unfortunate reveal of the powers the family struggles to keep hidden threaten to drive the Crew from their home, just when they crave stability and peace the most.
Despite all of the upheaval in their lives, the members of the Crew press on, facing the challenges to come with fortitude, tenacity and a profound love for one another. Dark days lie ahead, ones that will challenge William and his family’s sanity and make them question whether life is even worth living anymore. In the face of unspeakable tragedy, will the Crew rebound so they can seize the opportunity, unexpectedly lain before them, to learn of their ancient lineage and convoluted history? Does the appearance of a mysterious, but alluring, stranger spell disaster and death…or can she provide the answers the Crew have sought for so long to find the source of their mysterious powers? Even if the pieces to the puzzle all fall into place, will William’s family be able to stave off the Damned and prevent the decimation of the family they hold so dear?

A Fine Line: The Ancients Part I is the second novel in the series, continuing the story begun in A Fine Line: The Beginning. Follow the further adventures of the Crew as they face down the demonic wolves of the Damned and the destruction delivered in their wake. Celebrate with the family at Christmas and at a wedding…or two, and watch the world transform around them as they observe history from the standstill vantage point of an immortal race. The story of the Healthaways and their ever-growing, ever-changing family is a grand saga which begs to be enjoyed by readers who love sweeping historical drama, grand romance and enchanting fantasy.

Whoa! Can you say 'thrill ride?' That is definitely how I would describe A Fine Line: The Ancients, Part One by author J.C. Brennan. The story begins with the William Healthaway family. Having survived an attack by the Damned and triumphing over Tetron, the evil warrior, one would think they might have some peace for a time. But no such luck for this family. Revenge is afoot, and the Damned are ready to mete out terror to the Healthaways and all they care for. William, still trying to recover from the Civil War and the loss of his beloved children, has to find it within himself to bring his family together to prepare for what might be their most difficult battle yet. And when the townspeople that the Crew has lived amongst for years and have considered friends begin to turn on the family with whispers of witchcraft, the Healthaways may find themselves in a situation they can't escape.

I very much enjoyed this book. This is the second in a series, but I was able to follow along with the Healthaway storyline just fine. A fantastical novel set in the time period following the American Civil War is a unique enough premise, but adding in all the elements that author J.C. Brennan does, from clairvoyance and visions to shapeshifting, and you've got a very unusual read, even for one in the fantasy genre. I also enjoyed the feeling of magical realism that the book conveys, and the romantic overtones also help to enrich the story. This book would appeal to any reader who enjoys fantasy, history, or just a plain good read. This is the first novel of Brennan's that I have read, and I certainly look forward to more from this author

From the Author
This is a story that began as a dream, literally.  It has been nurtured; woven, and constructed into a series of novels about a dream I had six years ago.  I have worked diligently on this story; grew it, feed it, and cultivated it into an exciting dark adventure that I hope the readers will enjoy.
The character development is the one thing I am very proud of. Each one of the characters has a special place in my heart. Killing some of them off, however, is what must happen for this story to grow and nag at the reader to find out what will happen next.
I have written for years and finally decided to publish. It took a lot to put myself and my work out there for the world to criticize. However, if we never take chances we will never know what can truly happen. The first novel in this series, A Fine Line the Beginning, won the 2014 Pinnacle Book Award for Best in Fiction.  I was very surprised and truly honored.  I wrote this novel with the same passion and dedication as the first.  My greatest hope is that the reader will enjoy the story and be waiting on pins and needles for the third novel, A Fine Line the Ancients (Part II), to be published. If this happens it will be my greatest and most honored moment in life.
Enjoy the read,
JC Brennan

From the Back Cover
In the ongoing Fine Line story, A Fine Line the Ancients, the Crew has figured out how different they are from other humans. Their ties to the ancient tribe had given them powers. But, not even, the powers bestowed on them cannot prepare them for what happens next.  The secrets of the ancients are slowly revealed but with each secret exposed there is a price.
The crew is not prepared for what is before them when they learn the past they had thought to be true has been forged.  The astonishing truth will either make the crew stronger or tear them apart and the weight of this lies on William's shoulders.  He knows if he is unsuccessful in keeping the crew together the consequences will be dire for humanity.
As more of the ancient's secrets are revealed, the crew is finding it difficult to imagine all that lies in wait for them. They are not prepared when they learn who their rival, the future dark queen, actually is. With this new knowledge, complications begin to mount and how to deal with her commanding undying blood lust for revenge; a revenge that is filled with an unparalleled malevolent hatred which will cost the crew dearly in the end.  How will the crew handle the merciless blood thirsty battles the impending dark queen incites?  Who will live and who will die in the continuing story of A Fine Line, the Ancients part I?

Supernatural Can Be More Humanistic Than Humans
By Erik Nelson
Reading about the Healthaway family or crew has been quite an adventure. Not just because of the stories surrounding their struggles of trying to live a normal life while also being supernatural but also because I read them out of order. Despite me reading the books out of order, each book stands more than fine on its own.
The leader of the family or crew; William has to juggle a lot of events going on in his life. He must protect his crew from the Dammed, he feels guilty about the loss of his children and not to mention that new people or new supernatural evils want he and his crew dead. Despite all this, Williams and his crew band together and try their best at surviving the evils surrounding them while also enjoying the good side of life. But if the pressures from the evils around them become too much for the Healthaways to handle, will the fate of an immortal race disappear?
William Healthaway is really an interesting character. He has supernatural powers of course but he also has many humanistic qualities. I’d say he’s probably more human than many of the literary characters that I have read over the years. Here’s why; he does literally whatever he can to protect his loved ones and is willing to put himself at risk. At times, I feel like sometimes the pressure of him being a good person gets too much for him and I’m sometimes afraid that he’ll switch to the evil side just to take some pressure off of himself. But he doesn’t because the love for his family and goodness in the world are too much for him to give it all up. I personally believe that this is the moral to the series; don’t give up your beliefs just to ease the pressure of protecting them.

Like living inside an epic movie.
By Darla Hogan
I ask you to read through all of my review and heed the section marked ‘WARNING’.
The Ancients is part of an epic tale. The author has elected to write from third person narrative which makes you, the reader feel as if you are watching the story in a cinema but with one vital difference. As the depth and detail of this fantastically written work unfolds you become pulled into the ‘film making’, become part of the set and feel as if you are emerged in each scene. I can think of few books that have achieved this so plausibly.
J C Brennan has developed a writing style that seduces the reader into a complex and multi-layered plot, engages the reader into the hearts and souls of the characters, and that is extremely rare these days. I am reminded of feeling this affect when I read D H Lawrence and Thomas Hardy for the first time. I’m not sure what the author will think those comparisons but my point is, this piece of literature evokes the classic craft of inter-twining the reader with the characters.
WARNING: There are two points I want to make and they are not related to the sometimes graphic brutality that is unfortunately part of human history. The opening 7% of the book is developmental and if you are reading through the first 10% as a taster you may not realise what you are going to miss in the remaining 93% of this book. This is not a book to be read in short spurts, you will find once you are into the main body, you will not want to socialise with anyone and tasks that need attending to will be left waiting.

Powerful writing of J.C. Brennan’s A Fine Line: The Ancients- Part 1 (Vol 2)
By L.
J.C Brennan drops us right into the heart of the action with the second book of her intricately plotted series. With clever concepts and written in a direct and dramatic style, I was captivated from the start.
““The creature had the eyes of a demon, and they blazed a deep, menacing yellow. I couldn't look into them for any length of time for fear of losing my immortal soul.”” Yes...there are juicy elements of horror in this fabulous fantasy along with action, adventure, and suspense which ratchets up beautifully throughout the novel. Bring on the next!
*Note - There is sufficient back story for most fantasy enthusiasts to catch up with the story, but I will definitely pick up the first book and read it during my next holiday. A Fine Line: The Beginning

Incredible Novel, Insane Resellers
By BookMyrrh
Just a quick comment to say I think it is a shame this book is not currently in print. It is a fascinating, wonderfully engrossing novel by a true master of the occult/macabre genre. A much bigger shame is the fact that resellers are charging between $100 and $200 for a used copy of this small paperback novel. Withholding the opportunity to read this from others who would enjoy it by charging exorbitant and unrealistic "collector" fees is ridiculous. Someone should take up the project of getting this back in print.

Fascinating Stuff
By N. D. Flynn
This is a truly fascinating and at times startling account of one man's
desperate search for wisdom and knowledge.
Few books have held my attention as this one did,and any serious seeker
for Truth will recognise in the author and the main character a fellow
seeker.
To follow his journey through deception and delusion to his final encounter with destiny was a delight indeed.
Recommended to all who likewise seek for wisdom and understanding.

UN LIBRO INTEMPORAL
By andres ramirez
En esta obra, Gustav Meyrink logra una de sus mejores novelas junto con "El golem". Este es un libro profundo, lleno de misterio, que sabe lo que dice... Una obra que refleja la busqueda de la identidad y nos habla de las herencias malditas.

Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad

Heart of Darkness (1899) is a short novel by Polish novelist Joseph Conrad, written as a frame narrative, about Charles Marlow's experience as an ivory transporter down the Congo River in Central Africa. The river is "a mighty big river, that you could see on the map, resembling an immense snake uncoiled, with its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land". In the course of his travel in central Africa, Marlow becomes obsessed with Mr. Kurtz. The story is a complex exploration of the attitudes people hold on what constitutes a barbarian versus a civilized society and the attitudes on colonialism and racism that were part and parcel of European imperialism. Originally published as a three-part serial story, in Blackwood's Magazine, the novella Heart of Darkness has been variously published and translated into many languages. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh of the hundred best novels in English of the twentieth century.

This is the classic story

This is a classic. I had just seen an opera based on this book and I wanted some parts of the plot explained to me.

Fantastic Tale of Insanity and Death
By Jay Allan Storey
It took a while for me to get used to the somewhat archaic language, and there's an undercurrent of racism typical of Conrad's era, but in the end I loved this book! Incredible imagery, tension, descriptions of setting, and characters. The protagonist, Marlow, is given the task of meeting up with Kurtz, a representative of the company Marlow works for, in the heart of deepest Africa. After months of breakdowns and difficulties, he finally reaches Kurtz, who is badly broken, destroyed by years in a brutal, unforgiving world.

There is some really good stuff in it but it is thoroughly filled with eye-glazing prose. If that's your thing, this is your book.

Absolutely Amazing!
By Jamieson Wolf
Alva Viola Taverner is a woman who has her world under control.

As a car mechanic, she is used to fixing things, putting them back in order. She has her sister and her job. That’s all she needs out of life in her small town. Everything else has let her down. However, things are about to change.

A thief breaks into her apartment. At first she’s worried that her most prized possession, her Grandmothers watch, is stolen, but its fight where she left it, safe and sound. Then things get even more bizarre when there’s a break in at the garage.

She knows without a doubt that it’s the same man who broke into her apartment. She corners him and he tells her that her Grandmothers watch has the power to stop an impending catastrophe: the veil between our world and the other has grown thin; and the things that go bump in the night are breaking free.

Soon, she’s on the run with Gruff, her boss at the garage, Al's best friend Molly and Hector, the man who broke into her home and her work. Dangerous mists have started to roll along the roads and they can hear the sounds of others dying within them. The mists and what wait inside them are wiping out our world, one piece at a time. No one is safe.

When Alva is told that she has the only thing that can stop the impending doom, she has no choice but to trust Hector. However, will it be enough?
Or will they all die in the attempt?

I can’t tell you how amazing this book is. My meager plot summary does not do this book justice. Nigh (Book 1). Bilodeau has always been great at penning likeable, believable characters that we grow to consider friends, but in Nigh, she raises that up a notch and give us people we ache for. This is even more stupendous when you think that this is only the first part of a serialized novel.

That’s another great thing about Nigh. Bilodeau has embraced a storytelling method made popular by Charles Dickens, Armistead Maupin and Stephen King but she’s given it new life and an incredible sense of urgency. Make no mistake, you will race to the end to find out what’s going to happen, even knowing that this is only part one.

It hooks you in with elements of horror and fantasy. I was reminded of The Mist by Stephen King. I’ve read all of Bilodeau’s books, but was astounded that she had written something so dark and deadly. This is closer to a horror novel than a fantasy one, though it does have fantasy elements. Indeed, I was reminded of King mixed with Grimm’s fairy tales.

Bilodeau once again proves how adept she is with words. She's written amazing high fantasy and thrilling space opera's. Now she has bent and blurred the lines that separate genre’s and created something amazing.

I haven’t fallen in love with a novel like this for a while and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Nigh is amazing, wonderful and captivating and this is only part one! It'll be a long wait to part two.

I'll just have to read it again.

The Beginning is NIGH
By Linda
Once upon a time, there were no more happy endings...

So reads the tagline on the front cover of author Marie Bilodeau's new novella, Nigh, and people, she's not kidding. At 57 pages long, Nigh is the first segment in a serialized novel about two worlds colliding: ours, and that of the fae. Here's my take on it.

Nigh is not your run-of-the-mill fairy story, my friends. It's dark, dangerous, and more than just a little terrifying--and it more than justifies its "dark fantasy/horror" designation. The story pulled me in from the very first page and didn't once let go. There's a soothing, almost seductive quality to Marie's writing that lulls you into a sense of ordinariness, only to slam you with a new and rapidly changing reality that leaves you as breathless and reeling as the characters...over and over and over. Marie doesn't gloss over anything, so details are vivid and graphic, and despite the fantasy aspect, they feel scarily real.

I really can't think of anything I didn't like about this, apart from the fact that I have to wait for the next installment... *taps foot impatiently and raises eyebrow in Marie's direction* If you're a fan of darker fantasy and/or horror, I cannot recommend this highly enough. Even if it will leave you waiting and wanting. Seriously. Go. Buy it now. You can thank me later. ;)

Descent into Darkness from Fantastic Author
By Nicole Lavigne
First of all, a confession: I'm already a big fan of Marie's and love her writing, having read her first two trilogies (Heirs of a Broken Land and Destiny). She writes the kind of books that I can't put down and end up devouring in a weekend, then jonesing for the next installment. Her characters are compelling, and often feature driven women with ample spunk, but no matter how small a roll a character plays they are written with real dept and will draw you in.

There's plenty that's different about Nigh - the fantasy and space opera settings are traded in for something more contemporary and also entirely more sinister – but Marie's craft holds true no matter what she's writing.

Alva is a determined and independent young woman who cares deeply about her family. But when the veil between worlds thin, she finds herself in over her head and must trust a thief to keep herself and those closest to her safe in a world they no longer understand.

Nigh comes out on a strong start with interesting characters and high stakes, and Marie clearly has a lot more in store for Alva and her friends. Can they band together and stay alive, or will the world of the faeries run them over? Only time will tell.

The World Set Free, by H.G. Wells

H.G. Wells (21 September 1866 – 13 August 1946) was an English author best known as a sci-fi writer, though he was also a prolific writer in many other genres, including contemporary novels, history, politics and social commentary, and even writing text books and rules for war games. Together with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback, Wells has been referred to as "The Father of Science Fiction". Wells was an outspoken socialist and sympathetic to pacifist views, although he supported the First World War once it was under way, and his later works became increasingly political and didactic. His middle-period novels (1900–1920) were less science-fictional; they covered lower-middle class life (The History of Mr Polly) and the "New Woman" and the Suffragettes (Ann Veronica). Wells’ best known works are The Invisible Man, The Time Machine, and The War of the Worlds, the latter being notorious for a radio broadcast reading of the novel that caused panic among those listening who actually thought aliens were invading. The Island of Doctor Moreau is also considered a classic.

About the Author

Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

From AudioFile
Published in 1914 and set in 1956, this is a fantasy of the possible. Before scientists split the atom Wells foresaw the wonders of robotics, the positives and negatives of computers and the horrors of weaponry that could bring an end to civilization as we know it. Wells's sometimes unpopular social policy rails against the dangers of isolationism and offers the logic of globalization. Shelley Frasier performs the narrative with appropriately thoughtful distance. She manages sensitivity and complexity as George Ponderevo considers mankind's inevitable end. "...And these atomic bombs which science burst upon the world that night were strange even to the men who used them." A prophetic, imaginative social reformer, Wells has long been recognized as a man ahead of his time. S.J.H. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Atomic Theory, the book it all started from.
By A Customer
In this book, Wells describes nuclear warfare and begins the descriptions of a possible future. He named uranium, "Carolinum" and talked about a chain reaction that would leave radiation behind so that nothing would survive afterwards, even if they did escape from the weapon itself. Dr. Szilard, the man who came up with the idea of splitting the atom with a nuetron, did so after reading, "The World Set Free". I say, NO KIDDING! Wells lays the idea right out in front of the world's face, laughing! It then goes on to describe future events that have occured, though in different times, and some which have yet to occur. He spoke of Carolinum (uranium), the atomic theory and its increadible source of power. He spoke of robotics and computers replacing people in the work place. This is where it all started folks. AND THIS IS JUST IN THE FIRST 100 PAGES! Trust me... it gets better :) If you wish yo know more on the theory and the bombs' construction, I refer you to Richard Rhodes. If you want to know the mind and the story that began this whole deal, read this book!!!!

A Man Ahead of His Time
By A Customer
H. G. Wells is not usually given enough credit for this particular book (in my opinion, his best). The focus is usually upon one of his other works such as The Time Machine. The World set Free is truly staggering in its scope, scale, and vision of the future. It is interesting to note how much Wells got correct about the future, and to see how much he did not. The fact that this book was written before World War I indicates his genius at seeing what might be possible and how this might come about. I cannot recommend this book more highly than by saying AN EXCELLENT, FASCINATING, GRIPPING PAGE-TURNER. A quick point about the original year of publication - if my memory is correct, it was originally published in 1910, rather than 1914.

THE WORLD SET FREE by H. G. Wells
By MOTU Review
The World Set Free (recently reissued as The Last War) is a 1914 science fiction novel by H. G. Wells. When atomic bombs are developed and the world is threatened with universal devastation, its leaders are forced to rethink war, government, and society.

The World Set Free is remarkably prophetic, as Wells forecasts both nuclear war and the capacity for mutually-assured destruction. And while Wells misses the mark on the way atomic bombs work (his atomic bombs have the same explosive power as conventional bombs, but they just keep on burning), he certainly doesn't underestimate their destructive power.

This book feels like a novel only in the sense that it relates a series of fictional events. What few individuals appear here are scarcely characters in the literary sense - other than Egbert, none are developed in the slightest. This simply wasn't what Wells is trying to do - Wells is interested in the technology and its ramifications, and because that's what he focuses on, The World Set Free reads like a fictional history book, or perhaps like an outline for a longer novel. This keeps it from ever getting too interesting, and while it's a short book, it can be hard to get through.

In short, The World Set Free is an impressively-imagined but not very well-written piece of prophetic science fiction.

Smith of Wootton Major, by J. R. R. Tolkien

A charming new pocket edition of one of Tolkien’s major pieces of short fiction, and his only finished work dating from after publication of The Lord of the Rings.

What began as a preface to The Golden Key by George MacDonald eventually grew into this charming short story, so named by Tolkien to suggest an early work by P.G. Wodehouse. Composed almost a decade after The Lord of the Rings, and when his lifelong occupation with the ‘Silmarillion’ was winding down, Smith of Wootton Major was the product of ripened experience and reflection. It was published in 1967 as a small hardback, complete with charming black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes, and would be the last work of fiction to be published in Tolkien’s own lifetime.

Now, almost 50 years on, this enchanting tale of a wanderer who finds his way into the perilous realm of Faery is being published once again as a pocket hardback. Contained here are many intriguing links to the world of Middle-earth, as well as to Tolkien’s other tales, and this new edition is enhanced with a facsimile of the illustrated first edition, a manuscript of Tolkien’s early draft of the story, notes and an alternate ending, and a lengthy essay on the nature of Faery.

Review
"The book has a haunting quality, characteristic of the best of the 'deeper' folktales. It is a beautiful, memorable story." Times Educational Supplement "It may be compared to the most delicate miniature but it is one of a rare kind: the more closely it is examined the more it reveals the grandeur of its conception. Whoever reads it at eight will still be going back to it at eighty." New Statesman "A tremendously valuable volume with important new insights into Tolkien's way of working. It's also a beautiful hardcover edition of the story." Mythprint

All the way from Daybreak to Evening
By E. A Solinas
While most of his genius went into the world of Middle-Earth and its fantastical history, JRR Tolkien produced a number of smaller stories during his life.

And though he disliked allegory, the enchanting "Smith of Wootton Major" is a bit of an oddity among his writings -- a beautifully fantastical little fable that drips over with Tolkien's love of real, deep fairy tales. And unlike many a story of elves or faeries since, Tolkien keeps that sense of mystery and magic in the world of the supernatural.

It takes place in a little town "not very long ago for those with long memories, not very far away fro those with long legs." The Master Cook of that village takes a vacation, and returns with an apprentice in tow. But something odd happens at the Feast of the Cake -- the cook stirs in a "fay-star" with little trinkets in the cake, and it's accidentally swallowed by a boy there.

The boy (later called Smith) is changed by the fay-star, which sparkles on his forehead. When he grows up, Smith ventures into Faery itself, and even meets the Faery Queen herself. The message she gives him is for her mysterious, missing husband, the King -- who turns out to be the last person anybody in Wootton Major would have expected.

"Smith" is a fairy tale in the best sense. Don't expect cackling witches or convenient loopholes in spells here; Tolkien was too skilled for that. Instead we have majestic fey and sparkling magic, woven with a tidy medieval town (consider the custom of naming people after their jobs -- Smith, a smith, capisce?). Never once does it become precious or cutesy, only more enchanted as it goes along.

It's also among Tolkien's simpler writings, especially since it is effectively a short story. In fact, it's so simple that it barely has a plot -- the vanishing King is the closest it has to conflict or a complete plot.

But Tolkien's writing sparkles with little details of the fey, with only a minimum of description. His glimpses of Faerieland are too brief, but written with the exquisite, haunting quality of his better-known works ("Once in these wanderings he was overtaken by a grey mist and strayed long at a loss, until the mist rolled away and he found that he was in a wide plain"). And he gives the impression of a world of magic far greater than any human could grasp ("... bearing the white ships that return from battles on the Dark Marches of which men know nothing").

And Smith is an odd sort of hero, infused with a kind of otherworldly light and grace that shines from him in the form of "Starbrow." Perhaps it was so stand in for the ability to see the magical and fantastical in the mundane world -- and if so, perhaps Tolkien felt that he himself had been given a fay-star that never left him.

Certainly the beauty and sweetness of "Smith of Wootton Major" suggest that he had one always -- an underrated little tale of magic and faerie, which highlights Tolkien's sublime writing.

Tolkien's portrait of the inexpressible wonder of grace.
By A Customer
Farmer Giles of Hamm is a hilarious tale in the spirit of the lighter passages of The Hobbit. The Little Kingdom of this story has much in common with the Shire where Bilbo Baggins wandered. It should be read for the shear pleasure of the journey.
Smith Of Wooten Major is something else entirely. Though once again we travel to an ancient England that has much in common with Middle Earth, here we find a tale for grown ups. Though most reviewers say that the tale is about what the gift of fantasy adds to the life of those who receive it, I believe that it really speaks of the rewards that come to those who choose to live life on a deeper level. What makes the book difficult to describe is that in story form Tolkien paints a picture or an illustration of the faith and the grace that were such an integral part of who he was as a person. Travelling with him you feel that you have encountered something more deep and wonderful than words can tell. The journey is not for everyone, but for those of you who take it and begin to glimps its meaning, like Smith's magic star, it will become an integral part of who you are.

A Revelation of Tolkien's Visions of Faery
By Paul E. Thomas
J.R.R. Tolkien's short work, "Smith of Wooten Major," which he wrote late in life, has already appeared in several fine editions, both by itself and in combination with other pieces by Tolkien, and most of us Tolkien enthusiasts already have it on our shelves. So why another one now, and why should we buy it? There are several compelling things about this book that make it highly attractive to those seeking a deeper understanding of Tolkien as a writer and thinker, and I'll only mention four here. First, this extended edition includes an important never-before-published essay by Tolkien on the story and on Tolkien's views of the nature of Faery, of its importance to him, of faery tales, and of the role of allegory in stories of this kind. It is a fascinating piece that provides new insight into Tolkien's thought as an artist trying to capture glimpses of Faery in his writing. The essay is in some ways an echoing companion piece for his famous earlier essay "On Fairy Stories," in which, among other things, Tolkien outlines his theory of sub-creation that he executed so successfully in "The Lord of the Rings." Second, the book contains never-before-published early notes and draft manuscripts for Smith, several pages of which are reproduced in the book itself in their original hand-written form with helpful transcriptions on the opposite page. These papers not only show Tolkien actively creating and revising his story and the history of its characters, but they also show Tolkien's working methods as a writer and so demonstrate, in a microcosm, the methods he used on such a large scale for "The Lord of the Rings." Third, Flieger's editorial contributions are very helpful. She provides an afterword that discusses the critical treatement of Smith, its genesis as a story, and outlines the new material which, as she says, allow the reader to follow "the authorial progression from explanation to inspiration to formulation to painstaking revision." Flieger's notes are also very helpful, for she points us to relevant matters in Tolkien's other works and illuminates puzzling aspects of Smith. And fourth, this is perhaps the first edition of Smith that takes Tolkien's statements that it is not a children's story seriously. He called Smith "an old man's book, already weighted with the presage of bereavement." Previous editions of Smith have ignored this statement and dressed the tale up as a children's book, presumably based on the unquestioned assumption (which Tolkien questioned very sharply in "On Fairy Stories") that because this is a faery tale, and because it is short, it must be for children. This edition honors Tolkien's view not only of Smith but of the importance of Faery and faery stories in general by beautifully reproducing the tale and the lovely Pauline Baynes illustrations, which were made for the first edition, and by setting them within a handsome hardcover text that Tolkien readers will prize very highly. This is a must have.

"This was papa's place, where there's the new rowlock," said Luca, who had climbed over the side, "and here were the lupins, underneath." But of the lupins there was not one left; the sea had swept everything clean away. For this reason Maruzza would not leave the house, and never wanted to see the Provvidenza again in her life. "The hull will hold; something can be made of it yet," pronounced Master Zuppiddu, the calker, kicking the Provvidenza, too, with his great ugly feet; "with three or four patches she can go to sea again; never be fit for bad weather--a big wave would send her all to pieces--but for 'long-shore fishing, and for fine weather, she'll do very well." Padron Cipolla, Goodman Mangiacarubbe, and Cousin Cola stood by, listening in silence. "Yes,' said Padron Fortunato, at last. "It's better than setting fire to her." "I'm glad of it," said Uncle Crucifix, who also stood looking on, with his hands behind his back. "We are Christians, and should rejoice in each other's good - fortune. What says the proverb? 'Wish well to thy neighbor and thou wilt gain something for thyself.'" The boys had installed themselves inside the Provvidenza, as well as the other lads who insisted on climbing up into her, too. "When we have mended the Provvidenza properly," said Alessio, "she will be like Uncle Cola's Concetta;" and they gave themselves no end of trouble pushing and hauling at her, to get her down to the beach, before the door of Master Zuppiddu, the calker, where there were the big stones to keep the boats in place, and the great kettles for the tar, and heaps of beams, and ribs and knees leaning against the wall. Alessio was always at loggerheads with the other boys, who wanted to climb up into the boat, and to help to fan the fire under the kettle of pitch, ...

This is made manifest on entering the "Shadow-of-the-Rock," where the spectator sees a massive wall of thoroughly indurated limestone, disposed in regular layers more than two feet in thickness, with faces as smooth as if dressed with the chisel. Passing in front of this, across the American Fall, under the Horseshoe and Table Rock, there must have been formerly a broad cleft of soft, friable limestone, to the disintegration and removal of which was due the great overhanging of the upper strata noticed by Father Hennepin and Baron La Hontan.[...]".

HELEN OF TROY (Annotated), by Andrew Lang

In Greek mythology, Helen, better known as Helen of Sparta or Helen of Troy, was daughter of Zeus and Leda, wife of king Menelaus of Sparta and sister of Castor, Polydeuces and Clytemnestra. Her abduction by Paris brought about the Trojan War. Helen was described as having the face that launched a thousand ships. Helen or Helene is probably derived from the Greek word meaning "torch" or "corposant" or might be related to "selene" meaning "moon".
