Predictable

I ordered this as a mystery. Well, it slightly had a mystery but most of it was predictable. This is just a nice story about a lighthouse keeper who raised his child & a child that almost drowned as his own, then the hardships the 3 went through when a ship wrecked & they had to take on 80 more people (only ones left after wreck) & feed them on nearly nothing. Then the background comes in about why certain things happened. I knew about 1/2 way through basically what would happen. But it's a clean book, no sex & where there was swearing the word wasn't spelled out...so that was OK.

this is a great read. The characters are well drawn

Consistent with the style of the period in which it was written, this is a great read. The characters are well drawn, believable (well...to a reasonable), and the scenarios are engaging. I quite liked the book and already set off in pursuit of more of Louis Tracy's work. Loved the language.

Another fun, golden oldie

Early 20th century pulp detective fiction--fun to read. I won't attempt to review Mr Morrison's writing skill but I will caution that the Martin Hewitt story collections listed on Amazon (and elsewhere) show overlap of content and some cases of multiple titles for the same collection. Before selecting a collection, be sure to look at the table of contents to see whether you might already have the stories in another collection.

An Excellent Mystery Short Story Collection

Just finished reading this, liked it very much. The stories in this collection run the gamut from murder and theft to anarchists and disappearances. These stories have stood the test of time very well, published almost a century ago, they still have the ability to hold the reader's interest.

Arthur Morrison's detective, Marin Hewitt, does seem to have a touch of Sherlock Holmes in him; he is very observant, keeps his solutions to the mystery to himself until he has proved his theory, and solves the mysteries he tackles with a certain flair. On the other hand, Martin Hewitt doesn't have the obsessive idiosyncrasies of Sherlock Holmes; he is not addicted to cocaine, has no obsession with music, and doesn't go into a blue funk when there is no intriguing mystery to challenge his intellect. Quite the contrary, Mr. Hewitt maintains a perfectly respectable business in private investigations, even to the extent of having an office and a clerk. Martin Hewitt seems to be a perfectly normal person with an abnormally keen insight into investigations. Of the two, Holmes would certainly make the far more interesting character study, yet, Hewitt seems somehow to be more real and less of an artifact of the imagination, if it is possible to say such a thing about a fictional character.

For free on Kindle, it would be a crime not to nab this collection.

Critical to have on your Kindle

I just got a Kindle Fire for Christmas. Originally I was opposed to having a digital reader. Now I find it to be a great tool for me and my family. There are a number of free books or manuscripts for download. One of them was the Declaration of Independence. What a fabulous opportunity to read through one of the guiding documents of our nation. Reading and learning about the Declaration in school was a chore and you really dont appreciate the genius of the Declaration until you are older and have traveled. Now that I have served in the military, fought in our wars, traveled throughout the world, to reread the Founding Fathers words really hits home. To understand that many people in the world will never have the opportunity to live a life that we have and realize the reason why we we do is some very smartmen with commonsense came together to declare our freedom from Tyranny and oppression. If you dont have this on your Kindle now, download it. Worth reading and rereading with your children.

The Declaration of Independence is a monumental literary achievement. No other "country" had ever broken away from a Mother Country with the strength that England had. Yet, often people merely shrug the Declaration aside, as if it were so ancient it doesn't hold relevance.

The Founding Fathers knew what they were doing: they were smart and intelligent enough to steer us AWAY from a democracy, which is merely "the majority rules." Whereas, since they proposed a republic as the basic political form, we have an opportunity for all citizens to vote and have their vote count.

The giants of that time: Adams, Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Hancock, Madison, Lee, and the rest, would all be rolling over in their graves to see how Political Correctness has reduced their vision to virtually nothing.

A nice selection of Edwards' sermons

This book has a good assortment of Edwards' sermons. It includes Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God, which has great historical significance to the First Great Awakening, which helped to spur the American Revolution. This book has great spiritual depth and shows insight that's rarely seen in today's sermons. It also has great historical significance as Edwards' is America's only theologian and a very important part of America's past.
It can sometimes be a little hard to get into Edwards' writings, but these sermons really aren't dry once you're acquainted with his style. I did find the forward to be a little too long and somewhat out of date, though it included some interesting information on his life.

Lets face it some sermons can hit the nail on the head and present the truth in such a manner that you can see the light. This is one of those rare occasions, and there are more than one. Do not assume that just because it if free to download that it cannot be of value to you. Quite the opposite, you owe it to yourself to read the sermons, ponder them and see the light.

Mildly amusing

Bureaucratic infighting between congress and two branches of the armed forces, when some additional department has responsibility. Debris, or historical artifact - inane, but not that far from daily reality. Then the archaeological expedition to recreate an accurate launch vehicle. Cripe, we've already lost the recipe for the Saturn 5, and not nearly as much time has passed as this story posits.

A bit silly, but with some groanworthy reality buried deep inside.

The young Robert Louis Stevenson suffered from repeated nightmares of living a double life, in which by day he worked as a respectable doctor and by night he roamed the back alleys of old-town Edinburgh. In three days of furious writing, he produced a story about his dream existence. His wife found it too gruesome, so he promptly burned the manuscript. In another three days, he wrote it again. "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" was published as a "shilling shocker" in 1886, and became an instant classic. In the first six months 40,000 copies were sold. Queen Victoria read it. Sermons and editorials were written about it. When Stevenson and his family visited America a year later, they were mobbed by reporters at the dock in New York City. Compulsively readable from its opening pages, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is still one of the best tales ever written about the divided self.

There is no need for voicing or special sound effects since the pace of the reading keeps listeners as engaged as does the author's carefully scripted scenes and dialogues. Do You Know the True Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde??

I have seen many movie versions of this classic. So, I made the assumption that I knew the true story. Then I read this book. Was my assumption ever wrong!!!

This particular book (published by Signet Classics in Sept. 2003) of less than 150 pages has five parts:

(1) Opening Pages. They include a brief biography of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 to 1894). (Takes up 4% of the book.)
(2) Introductory Essay. This was written by the late, famous Russian author Vladimir Nabokov. (Takes up 20%.)
(3) The Actual Story. Its original title is "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1886). (Takes up 65%.)
(4) Afterword to the Story. It is written by a modern writer. (Takes up 8%.)
(5) Selected Bibliography. Outlines great works by and about R.L. Stevenson. (Takes up 3%.)

The introductory essay was an actual lecture Nabokov gave when he was associate professor at Cornell University from 1948 to 1959. It gives a thorough, detailed analysis of this "seldom read" classic.

The afterword consists of a shorter analysis of this classic by the modern writer Dan Chaon. I felt that this afterword provided valuable insight regarding the story of Jekyll and Hyde.

Chaon sums up the entire story: "The structure of ['Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'] follows a path as indirect and elusive as its multiple narrative voices. With its obliquely recorded incidents, its eyewitness accounts and sealed confessions, it resembles...a [police detective's] casebook--a collection of gathered clues, fragments, through which the clever detective may be able to...project a complete narrative. Perhaps one of the most compelling aspects of this novel [of ten chapters] is that, in fact, there's so much left here for [the reader] to fill in, so many scenes that [the reader] can only imagine. Such a structure creates fertile ground for allegory [a story with symbolic meaning] hunters, and there are indeed many convincing interpretations of this novel...The puzzle-like structure of the novel [which only has eight major male characters] creates a kind of Rorechach test, open to various interpretations." (A Rorechach test is where a person interprets inkblot designs.)

The inspiration of this short novel is said to have come from a dream (or, perhaps more accurately, a nightmare) Stevenson had. His actual writing is amazing and skillful in all chapters. The writing especially of the last two chapters, chapters nine and ten, stood out for me. Here, for example, is his actual description of what happened when somebody observed someone using Dr. Jekyll's concoction: "He put the glass to his lips and drank at one gulp. A cry followed; he reeled, staggered, clutched at the table and held on, staring with injected eyes, gasping with open mouth; as I looked there came, I thought, a change--he seemed to swell--his face became suddenly black and the features seemed to melt and alter--and the next moment, I had sprung to my feet and leaped back against the wall, my arm raised to shield me...[and] my mind submerged in terror."

Finally, the cover of this particular book is interesting. It shows the shadow of a man in a top hat behind a window shade. This can be taken to represent Hyde who is a shadowy character.

In conclusion, this particular book has it all: an introduction by a late, well-known author, an intriguing mystery/horror story by a late, famous nineteenth century author, and an afterword by a gifted, modern writer. Be sure to read this book to learn the true story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!!!

Since I am a contributor to this volume, I will not offer a "review" in a conventional sense, but I will offer a list of contents, which this website otherwise does not offer. As there are a number of competing paperback editions of Stevenson's novella and the text of the story is essentially the same (allowing for minor editorial variants), readers should consider the issue of what else besides the main text they will be getting for their money, and this edition is unusually rich in supplementary features, so that the original story makes up only 55 of its 222 pages.

In addition to the text of Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," with explanatory notes by the editor, this volume also contains:

Complete FICTION by RLS (but no poetry or NF)

This is an excellent bundle of RLS's novels, novellas, and short stories. In fact, according to the blurb in the Kindle Store, "this collection comprises all the fiction Stevenson ever published." I cannot confirm the veracity of "all" and "ever," but this set contains the titles I had expected to find, plus a few pleasant surprises. It is handsomely formatted, and the content is easily accessible via a detailed, but particularly user-friendly, active TOC (though for some reason "The Dynamiter" is listed twice with two different publishing dates). And the price (at a mere $.99) is certainly great for so much content.

But that content is NOT as "complete" as both titles -- the one on the cover ("Complete R.L. Stevenson") and the one in the Kindle Store listing ("The Complete Collection of R.L. Stevenson") -- might lead you to believe. This set is NOT complete with regard to the totality of his creative output; it contains none of his poetry (such as his well-known "A Child's Garden of Verses") nor any of his travel writing, essays, etc. So while the explanatory note clearly states this is complete only insofar as his fiction is concerned, there is no good reason why the title(s) shouldn't be equally as forthright (as in simply and more truthfully: "The Complete Fiction of RLS").

FYI: A (virtually) truly complete set appears in the Kindle Store by Delphi for $2.99, but like most Delphi collections, it provides much obscure material and various supplements that are of primary interest only to die-hard students of the author. That memory-usurping set is not for me at the present time.

The misleading title(s) aside, this is a fine collection and is well worth the low price. It is everything I had hoped it would be, and I am VERY happy with it.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad, (1857-1924) born JOzef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, was a Polish-born English novelist. Most of his works featured a nautical setting and depicted trials of the human spirit by the demands of duty and honor. Before he started writing, Conrad joined the French merchant marines and later joined the British navy. Some of his numerous works include, Heart of Darkness, The Arrow of Gold, The Secret Agent, An Outcast of the Islands, and Lord Jim.

Unexpectedly Modern Approach to Addiction

At first glance, "Brought Home" seems to be just one more of the many novels meant to be spiritually edifying, aimed at (mostly) girls, and frequently given as Sunday school prizes; one more that tries to instill the importance of virtue and the dangers of sin into young minds. Nowadays, a lot of our ideas about sins and virtues are very different to what was generally understood back then - on the surface. If you look properly, though, you will find that we are not that different under many aspects from those who lived back then.

When was "back then"? The author, Hesba Stretton (her real name was Sarah Smith), lived from 1832 to 1911. She was from Shropshire, England, and the daughter of a bookseller. At her time, she was very popular; Wikipedia says that one of her books sold ten times more than "Alice in Wonderland".
And yet, her writing was different in that she had practical experience with the kind of people she wrote about, having worked with slum children in Manchester and having witnessed close-up all manners of cruelties and degradation. Let me quote Wikipedia again: [said experience] gave her books a greater sense of authenticity, for Stretton's books drive home the abject state of the poor with almost brutal force. She became one of the co-founders in 1894 of the London Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, which combined with similar societies in other cities such as Manchester to form the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children some five years later.

"Brought Home" is, in short, the story of a vicar and his wife. She becomes an alcoholic, and the book not only describes how this was possible for someone of her standing, but also how people treat her, how her husband and the village react to her illness, what is done (or not done!) to help her, and how she eventually recovers and is, in more than one sense, brought home.

The way Hesba Stretton deals with the subject is very interesting. Not only does she explain that, in fact, alcoholism is not limited to the lowest social stratum of society, but also that self-righteousness and claiming to be good Christians does nothing to help an addict. I imagine that, back then, this particular story may have been quite an eye-opener for some. Her understanding of alcoholism seems profound, and I guess she had spoken in depth to more than one sufferer in order to be able to write about it in the way she did. She never accuses, merely describes and explains, and that made me decide to write this review and not feel ashamed about having read something so "Sunday-schooly-ish".

About the Author
I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was a little kid, and then spent the majority of my life preparing to be anything but a writer. I was born on November 13, 1986 and grew up in Bellbrook, Ohio. I spent most lunch periods throughout high school simultaneously talking with friends and scribbling stories into a notebook. Those stories became attempts at a few first novels, which I subsequently abandoned. When I went to college at Bowling Green State University, I majored in psychology and pre-medicine. I was on track to go to medical school, but was absolutely sure that I would publish my first novel before I got there and would be far too rich and famous to bother with it. In the meantime, the science classes were interesting, I was able to take writing courses, and I got my first taste of philosophy and the wonderful world of hours-long and caffeine-fueled discussions about morality, mortality, and morbid reality. In this time, I abandoned several nearly-complete novels and became neither rich nor famous. I did, however, meet Jessica Gallagher, whose mountainous heart and razor intellect compelled me to ask her to become Jessica Steuver. A few years later, I attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati. I opened a human body to see what was inside, learned the physics of blood flow and the tiny electrical impulses that allow cells to function, and learned a staggering number of things that can go wrong within your body and kill you. It was fascinating and terrifying at the same time, but there was one major difference between me and everyone else at that school: I didn’t really want to be a doctor. After two years, I found the courage to leave medical school and do what I wanted to do in the first place. I started writing in between gigs ranging from IT guy to laboratory assistant and published my first novel, The Wolves of Ragnarok, in February of 2015. And just like my favorite author, Robert Jordan, promised not to stop writing until they nailed shut his coffin, I don’t intend to stop writing until my fingers are too gray and lifeless to work the keyboard.

entertaining read

This is the first book in a series. The story is complete so the book can stand alone but there's obviously more to come. It's a little confusing at first, kind of like a Russian novel since most of the characters have more than one name. However, the names are repeated enough that you can follow the story if you pay attention. Steur does a superb job of creating a world separate from ours and populating it with believable characters. An entertaining read.

Beautiful

This was the first book that I ever read of Alger's collection and it was what left me with a constant desire for more. Due to the fact I read from a hard copy I did not have all the pages and stuff.
Now I can read it again but with most everything there... but of course it does have a few typos.
But to get to the story...
I was again thrilled, horrified, and warm hearted... as we read of little phil, the hardships the abuse, the pain, and then the change and fortune.
I will not lie in some lot of ways this is probably one of the saddest stories by this author I have read, but in a lot of ways one of the very best.(I legit cried when little James or Giacomo dies)
Waking people up to the hardship of street boys in that time but at the same time taking us on an exciting adventure of defiance, fear, and victory.
I Would definitely recommend.

Horatio Alger's books are predictable, but all are well worth reading. In fact, more people should be reading Horatio Alger's books today. They provide great lessons in how to live a positive, productive, useful life.Highly recommended!!! Plus they give you a glimpse into what life was like in the 19th century. This one is an excellent story about a musician.
