A thief has a change of heart after a robbery goes wrong and decides to return the money . . . at all costs!

In “Bad News for Bad Men,” Jimmy Jones is a ne’er-do-well with a trigger finger who has spent half his life raising hell. In hopes of turning his life around, Jimmy arrives to the town of Jasper, where his uncle has gotten him a job at the town newspaper. No longer a gunfighter, Jimmy is now an editor. But his uncle welcomes Jimmy with a warning: “The only news in Jasper is bad news.”

When Bill Genniver and his partner, Jerry Garlan, decide to hold up a stagecoach for some quick cash, the two outlaws quickly find themselves at odds. Garlan shoots down a horse to stop the stage, but Genniver takes it one step further when he shoots a passenger to get to the cash. With the cold-blooded money in their hands, Garlan’s conscience gets the better of him. He regrets not only killing the horse, but the whole robbery too, and decides that somehow he has to do the right thing and return the money in “The Lion’s Share.”

The title story introduces Jerry Finnegan, a rancher and a family man. But when Slade the outlaw and his band of misfits threaten to kill Finnegan and his family to steal the ranch, Finnegan calls out to Charlie Kimball for help. Kimball knows his friend is in trouble, and believes the real reason Slade wants the ranch is a special well on the property that just happens to turn the water blood red.

Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

About the Author
Max Brand is the best-known pen name of Frederick Faust, creator of such beloved characters as Destry and Dr. Kildare, among others. Eighty motion pictures and many radio and television programs have been based on his work. Faust went to Italy as a war correspondent during World War II after the United States entered the conflict, and he was killed during a night attack on a hilltop village held by the German army. His literary output was so prolific during his life that he averaged three new books per year for seventy-five years, including many years after his death.

Trio of Western Tales from a Master!
By Mike O'Connor
Max Brand (AKA Frederick Faust) is one of the best-known and most popular authors of Western short stories and novels despite the fact that he has been dead for some 68 years!THE RED WELL brings together three stories Brand wrote between 1928 and 1934. I've always enjoyed Brand's work but I have to confess THE RED WELL threw me for a loop.

I say that because two of the stories in this 2011 Gale/Cengage Learning release are among the most audacious or atypical Western tales I've ever read.

In 'Bad News for Bad Men,' Brand introduces Jimmy Jones, a character who seems so omniscient about the situation he finds himself in, it's unreal. Jones, a hellraiser, has been gifted an entire newspaper, the 'Jasper Journal,' by his uncle who thinks the experience will make Jones drop his wayward lifestyle. Jones has barely taken over as the paper's editor when he senses evil deeds being done and, through some incredible game-playing and almost non-stop action, exposes the villainy.

The second story, 'The Lion's Share,' has would-be gunfighter Jeff Garlan grappling with the consequences of a stagecoach robbery that goes bad. Garlan's partner coldbloodedly guns down one of the men on the stagecoach and the two flee with the loot. The two soon have a falling-out and Garlan kills his partner. The rest of the story deals with Garlan's attempts to atone for the crime and make amends with the murdered man's daughter. Suffice it to say, Garlan is not your usual Western hero or even anti-hero.

The last story, 'The Red Well,' follows Jerry Finnegan as he goes to the aid of an old friend even though it costs him his girlfriend. Finnegan lends his guns to a poor rancher and his family who are trying to fight off the Slade gang who want the rancher's land and will kill for it. Finnegan comes closest to being a traditional Western hero.

While the plots themselves are entertaining, the offbeat lead characters in the three stories are what makes THE RED WELL so appealing. You have to give Brand an 'A' for Audacity. Recommended.
