Swashbuckling adventure of the 1580s, when the French King issued his anti-Huguenot edicts.

Sieur de la Tournoire leaves the country to visit Paris. He is a 21-year old Huguenot, so he anticipates that he will not be welcomed with open arms by the court of Henry III. Nonetheless, he manages to join the French Guard.

de la Tournoire is interested in Mlle. D'Arency, who asks him to kill De Noyard for her. Naturally he refuses. Mlle. D'Arency conspires with Queen Catherine De Medici to trick him into the task. This makes an enemy of the Duke of Guise, so de la Tournoire is inadvertently caught in the queen's conspiracy.

The King's sister, Marguerite, hides him from Catherine's machinations and sends him on a mission to her husband, Henri of Navarre. Henri makes him a Captain in his guards, where he flourishes. His adventures include assisting Mlle. De Varion in rescuing her father from prison--her father was imprisoned for sheltering Huguenots.

This Renaissance adventure has the same qualities as an Alexandre Dumas novel and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys old-fashioned adventure tales.

Again Charly cries out to me but it's not my name he's saying. I turn to him as the bullet misses The Wolf and hits the girl.

No! I scream uncontrollably.

She falls down in a heap. The Wolf steps over her not wanting to bloody his shoes. He disappears into the safety of the compound and out of my grasp. Blood runs down the steps and the world turns dark again.

Everything fades to ash, nothing is left. Eternity in the wastelands is the price I pay for my failures. I try to find strength to leave this place, but I've been stripped there's no hope left. I close my eyes and let the darkness consume me.

Great Story!!

This really was a great story. If you like dystopian fiction (
Divergent, Red Rising, Unwind) I think you will enjoy this. It is the first in what I believe will be a nine book series. As with most series, this first book sets the groundwork for more elaboration later. I am waiting for the next book!!

A more serious side of Berta Ruck.

If this weren't so interesting to me historically, I'd perhaps have given it only 3 stars because it needed a tad more editing to keep the story flowing more smoothly and to eliminate some repetition. That said, it was a powerful read for me, written during WWI about everyday British people living that time of war.

The story begins at an air show in Hendon in 1914, just prior to Britain's entry into the Great War. Our heroine, Welsh working girl Gwenna Williams, admires one handsome flyboy in particular and flying itself in general. How free one must feel up there in the air! She and the young aviator eventually meet and they have a hesitant courtship.

Along the way, Ruck treats us to slices of life for working girls, suffragettes, dilettantes both male and female, soldiers and airmen, possible German spies, and some eye-opening looks at the varied female attitudes toward marriage and women's place in society. Some very 21st-century-thinking females are included in these women characters written in 1915.

Well worth the read for the look at life in 1914 war-time England, it's a more serious Ruck effort than her fluffier works such as His Official Fiancee.

Wish Berta Ruck Could See the Kardashians

This is the fourth Berta Ruck (Mrs. Oliver Onions) book that I have read. Unfortunately, I seem to have stumbled upon the best book, His Official Fiancée, first and the others have not lived up to that one.

The Boy with Wings is of interest as a history lesson rather than as a work of fiction. Written near the beginning of the 20th century, the story revolves around the early days of aviation and the outbreak of World War I.

The details of the story are interesting--how people of the time lived, dressed and thought. However, the story is very predictable and melodramatic. Ruck's decided prejudices are more interesting than the plot. Suffragettes are misguided, pig-headed and insufferable. Men who are intellectual or interested in the arts are effete and not "real" men. Even the Boy Scouts get a share of criticism for not becoming a paramilitary organization devoted to training young boys for a future as soldiers.

At one point, Ruck delivers quite a diatribe against people past the age of 30 who do not "mature" but still want to enjoy dinner parties and dancing, while not realizing they are too old for such childish pursuits. I found myself wishing she could observe today's reality television programs. I'd love to hear her reaction.

Do Not Recommend This Book

I have been a Berta Ruck fan for many years, since I was a teenager, and when I saw a book I had not read hurried to get it. It was unbelievably juvenile, with a very naive "heroine." She saw her first airplane in 1914 and promptly fell in love with the pilot, determined she was going to marry him. It progresses on to the beginning of World War I, and the ending was unbelievable and HORRIBLE. It left me not just depressed, but repulsed. I still enjoy "In Another Girl's Shoes" and "His Official Fiance" but if see any more of her old books will not read them. Actually I would not even give this book one star if I had the option.

Same plot as always...why not, it works...Sweet heroines, stalwart heroes, evil greedy villains, some major event, which shows up the wicked for what they are, and all ends well...happy ever after, to the tune of wedding bells...the plot convoluted and quirky, the settings good, the characters simple and straight-forward, and the solution not immediately obvious...good vacation read!

This book is in easy to follow design, almost in encyclopedia form. It is organized so if you are already away of a particular god or goddess or just need to fill in some background on a tale you can go right to it; this is unlike the actual Eddas that you have to follow in story form from front to back to make since.

There are 64 illustrations for those that learn visually. The illustrations are in black and white. Each is clearly designed and also refers to the page that it is referencing. If you are worried about accuracy there is an Index to Poetical Quotations and a Glossary/Index.

A Good read, but not scholarship.

Myths of the Norsemen
by H. A. Guerber

The errors in this work are fairly typical for the period that it was written. Romanticizing the Norse and Arthurian Myths seemed to be a very legitimate pastime for numerous Victorian era authors. While most of the book is in clearly and well written prose, at best it should be consider along the lines of a, "Historical Novel", or as a semi-serious children's text on Norse mythology. There are just too many errors and outright fabrications for serious study. Additionally, while there might be a small amount of justification for an academic and scholarly comparison between Norse Mythology and Greek Mythology, what is presented in the last chapter of this book is not one. Guerber's unsupported and exceptionally vague reference's to non-identifiable ethereal sources is very frustrating. Let's face it, there are not an infinite number of sources for this information, different translations are one thing but changing the myths and alluding to, "other", unspecified sources of wisdom is quite unacceptable. I am of the opinion that many of these sources were contemporaries of Guerber's and she was sighting them in this work. It would be like me using Harrison's, "The Hammer and The Cross", as a validation for what I thought the true meaning of the Edda's were and then publishing it as a fact.

O.K., now that I've slammed this work and author fairly hard let me lay out the two reasons why I think anyone interested in the Norse and Germanic Myths should own a copy, or in my case two copies, (one paperback and one hardback). Firstly, the illustrations are very well done. Granted that they are seldom historically accurate and very Victorian or Wagner like, but well done none the less. Surprisingly, to me anyway, the illustrations in my 1992 paperback are sharper and clearer than those in my 1993 hard cover edition. Unfortunately, the illustrations in both copies are a bit on the dark side, I am attempting to obtain an early 1900's copy to compare the differences.
Secondly, if you are interested in other non-historical writings on the Norse Myths this book is a treasure trove of quotes and poetry . The vast majority of the authors listed may have been fairly well known a century ago, today however, many border on the obscure. It's an interesting and informative look into the past to see how these authors perceived the Norse Myths and makes me wonder how today's modern works will be viewed in another hundred years. Another thing I liked about the paperback edition was the larger type face used, it's probably about 14 pt., much easier to read than the hardback edition.
Because of these reasons I have rated this book with three stars.

"Why not?" was the almost challenging reply. "You are not the only great statesman who needs to step off the treadmill now and then."

There was a certain quiet contempt in Tallente's uplifted eyebrows. The contrast between the two men, momentarily isolated on the little platform, was striking and extreme. Tallente had the bearing, the voice and the manner which were his by heritage, education and natural culture. Miller, who was the son of a postman in a small Scotch town, an exhibitioner so far as regards his education, and a mimic where social gifts were concerned, had all the aggressive bumptiousness of the successful man who has wit enough to perceive his shortcomings.

Democracy and Romance in Post WW1 England

After WW1, England and other countries suffered economic and political turmoil. Revolutions brought communists and socialists to power in many European countries. Labor unions and industrial workers helped England win the war, but suffered from high taxes and archaic social structure. The aristocracy that was content to sink back to pre-war opulence. This political process and personalities are the subject of this thrilling, beautifully written 1921 novel.

Andrew Tallente is a middle aged politician whose once bright career has been stymied by jealousy within his own party and by the opposition Democrat/Labour Coalition running against himm. Defeated and unseated he loses his promised cabinet post. He retires to his small farm on the coast of Devon where he discovers his personal secretary has been having an affair with his wife. There he meets Lady Jane Partington, a progressive landowner and strong willed modern woman.

Tallente is recruited to the democratic cause by the charismatic Dartrey, the leading socialist thinker. He meets the free-thinking (in 1920 terms) M who arouses emotions which he has long suppresssed. Meanwhile, the crude and underhanded Miller plots against Tallent with blackmail and intrigue.

Much is made in this novel of the benefits of radical socialism. Given the mess created by governments after the War, the benefits of a centrally planned economy and dictatorial rule were attractive. What truly led Britain to maintain democracy while Germany turned towards National Socialism? This novel offers no analysis, but a contemporaneous recording of the social dialogue that influenced the various social and political classes at the time.

Oppenheim was staunchly conservative and pro-aristocracy in almost all of his writings. This democratic diversion is highly entertaining. In particular his descriptions of the emotional content of conversation are fascinating.

An outdated history book

As said in the description; " Originally published in 1922" So unless you're really into studying the History of Holland & the Netherlands (Nederlands) as a passion, I highly suggest staying away from this one. Instead, search for a more modern history book.

*NOTE* If you still would like to purchase this book even after reading that. Take note that this book is free digitally around the web, and that there are various public domain audio book sites that have this in their catalogue.

Very well written

If anyone has a Dutch background, or is interested in European history this is a must read. The history of the Dutch Indie Company, and the entire Royal progression from the House of Orange is contained in this one volume. Edmundson writes with great enthusiasm as he unravels the History of Holland.

Great Bargain Read

It is very difficult to detail the entire history of a nation, especially when that history is virtually uneventful. For the earlier part of its story, the Dutch Republic was a fascinating, pulsing, important facet of the larger picture of World History. From the first rumblings of independence from Spain that led to the Eighty Years War, the Golden Age, the development of the Dutch East India Company,
and through the placement of a Dutch Prince on the throne of England, the story is fascinating, and Edmundson does a remkarkable job detailing all the facts and keeping the players straight. But after the Glorious Revolution of 1688, as the fortunes of Holland began a gradual decline, the story grows duller. Edmundson's narrative continues with the same careful attention, but the story gets bogged down in political infighting and minutia. Edmundson cannot help this fact: once Holland stopped being a major player and was forced merely to go along for the ride with other nations of Europe, the story becomes important only to fanatics about Dutc History like myself.

The Red Badge of Courage is a war novel by American author Stephen Crane (1871–1900). Taking place during the American Civil War, the story is about a young private of the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame, he longs for a wound, a "red badge of courage," to counteract his cowardice. When his regiment once again faces the enemy, Henry acts as standard-bearer. Although Crane was born after the war, and had not at the time experienced battle first-hand, the novel is known for its realism. He began writing what would become his second novel in 1893, using various contemporary and written accounts (such as those published previously by Century Magazine) as inspiration. It is believed that he based the fictional battle on that of Chancellorsville; he may also have interviewed veterans of the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, commonly known as the Orange Blossoms. Initially shortened and serialized in newspapers in December 1894, the novel was published in full in October 1895. A longer version of the work, based on Crane's original manuscript, was published in 1982.

About the Author
American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

Jerry Robbins, co-founder of the Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air has written and produced over 350 radio plays, including Ticonderoga, Captain Blood, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Gettysburg, Treasure Island, Yankee Clipper, Powder River, and Little Big Horn. In 2006 he started a collaboration with legendary author Ray Bradbury, producing Dandelion Wine, followed by Something Wicked This Way Comes, and wrote the script for, and produced The Halloween Tree; all award winning productions that garnered high praise from the master himself. He is currently working on a fourth collaboration with Mr. Bradbury, a radio dramatization of The Martian Chronicles.

Astonishing, the Army hasn't changed in 150 years!

I am currently serving on active duty in the Army, and I found this book to be fantastic. Soldiers bitching about everything (especially the officers), rumors constantly flying around about who knows what, cowardice and extraordinary courage flying around in the midst of mass confusion, Stephen Crane definitely knew what he was talking about! A must read for any past, current or future soldier.

I felt like I was at war

How would I behave and feel if thrust into battle? Easy to declare that one is patriotic and in agreement with a cause, to get in line and sign up, but how about the day in and day out part of battle? The waiting, the social intercourse with fellow fighters, the gear, following without question a commander, could I do that? How does the average 19-23 year old feel in those situations? This book conjures up thoughts, feelings, emotions that put you on the front line. Well written and a good story, the killer combo.

Pasaron dos años más tarde antes de que él llevara a cabo su plan y escribió esta historia.

Al igual que en Guerra y paz, Tolstói describe los combates como un caos incomprensible, como un torbellino arrebatador en el que los soldados van de un lado para otro
sin entender la propia esencia de sus actos: resuenan los cañones, destellan en el cielo los disparos azarosos y las estelas imprevisibles de las bombas, estallan sin aviso los proyectiles, los soldados avanzan y retroceden en desorden y nadie sabe muy bien qué está pasando, qué ejércitos vencen y cuáles son derrotados.

Esta novela se opone a la visión romántica de la guerra y plantea como prioridad la descripción del mundo interior de soldados y oficiales; más que los combates, su verdadero
protagonista es el hombre. Lo que une y distingue los tres Relatos de Sebastopol es precisamente la implacable introspección con que Tolstói analiza a los protagonistas, su asombrosa capacidad para perfilar la personalidad de un personaje mediante unos pocos trazos sabiamente escogidos, su incidencia en el monólogo interior y la exploración de las intenciones y ambiciones ocultas de los hombres, su preocupación por valores de orden moral y, en última instancia, su obsesión por la muerte, que no le abandonaría a Tolstói nunca.
