Had Norman known that this book would lead him on a quest to publish it and get it into the hands of as many people as possible, he probably would not have even picked it up. But, as many of us know, God's ways are not our ways, and He is patient in waiting for His will to come to pass.

HERE'S ONE MYSTERY WITH AUTHENTIC 1920's FLAVOR

A surprise bargain from the free book bin. This book is authentic in its 1920's setting because it was written in 1922. Never heard of the authors but it is not in the least archaic in plot-line, characters or style. Stands with the better mysteries in the kindle list of contemporary works though somewhat longer than most. Since Amazon doesn't supply it, here is a general outline. One day, a California Bank discovers that one million dollars is missing. A clerk has also disappeared. The Bank calls in the head of a detective agency contracted to it as well as some interested Directors and investors. One among them, a young war hero, (World War I), a high spirited man, offers to assume the loss for 800,000 dollars in cash. In return, he will get the million in lost securities, if found. The Bank agrees. The head of the detective agency, an old hand who has known the youth since childhood, sets out to find the lost funds. As is essential to similar plots today, but not in the 20's, the youth has a childhood friend, now about 20 years old, whom he draws into the chase to help. Turns out to be a beautiful flapper with extraordinary powers of observation and logical deduction from observed facts. The remainder of the book is a detailed accounting of their search for the malefactor. The plot thickens, appreciably, when it is suspected that part of the money for the youth's payment to the bank was obtained from his father, following a violent argument with him. The father was found the following day, a suicide, in his study, locked from the inside, impenetrable to anyone else. The son is suspected. The remainder of the book revolves about these interrelated plot-lines, with romance, of course, implicit, but, not, as far as can be told, on the part of the young ex-soldier. Narrator is the Old Detective, who is set in his ways, and the two young people, with their novel ideas and daring.
I would certainly commend the book to any regular Kindle mystery reader. It is not only a bargain in price (being an out of copy-write free book) but a good read, involving unhappy marriages, illicit love, moral blackmail, all dealt with in the milder verbal and imaginative style characteristic of its day-not ours,

And then there was the custom to never drill a water well without a water witcher (person using a peach tree limb with a Y branch) to locate the drilling site and rarely did they not find water and today we use highly technical electronic subterranean scanning devices to guide such efforts. They were entirely self sufficient and could build, can, sew, plant and in an almost totally agrarian way. At our demise we have diminished the credibility of such wisdom and self-sufficient skills.

About the Author
Aristophanes (446 - ca. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a prolific and much acclaimed comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays have come down to us virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide us with the only real examples we have of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are in fact used to define the genre. Also known as the Father of Comedy and the Prince of Ancient Comedy, Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries - Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander contributing to the trial and execution of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had caricatured the philosopher. The demagogue Cleon once prosecuted Aristophanes for slandering the Athenian polis with his second play The Babylonians (now lost). Details of his trial and punishment are not recorded but Aristophanes replied with merciless caricatures of Cleon in his subsequent plays, especially The Knights. "In my opinion," he says through the Chorus in that play, "producing comedies is the hardest work of all."

Jeru must choose: save the people he loves, or sacrifice them to save Marathana.

ENJOYABLE READ

Wolf’s Bane, book 2 in the Rise of the Papilion Trilogy, moves the Papilion lore forward, transporting the reader on a fabulous journey with characters introduced in The Purple Morrow, and an intimate exploration of evil, sacrifice, and destiny. Author Dyane Forde once again makes delightful use of poetic-like prose to paint colorful scenes, vivid characters, and the fantastical world of Marathana.

All the more reason to lament Wolf’s Bane frequent lapses into weak verb and word choices, and passive voice, since this creates an unfortunate distraction from an otherwise cunningly crafted saga, captivating characters, and intricate world building. This type of mythical storytelling is well served by Dyane’s wonderful prose, and might have been an even more pleasurable read, had the author stretched the boundaries of normal compositional grammar and sentence structure. Dyane Forde certainly has the talent to bend grammar to her will, and the Papilion saga not only requires it, but deserves it.

Despite this, I enjoyed Wolf’s Bane, as I did The Purple Morrow. And I await Berserker, the final installment, with eager anticipation for how this fascinating tale will end.

Enjoyable sequel

Wolf’s Bane is Book 2 in the Rise of the Papilion Series. It’s a well-written story told from several points of view. The main characters here are Jeru, a Southlander, and Kelen, a warrior of North. Both of their points of view were done well, and while it was nice of the author to show Jeru and Nyssa’s relationships with their ups and downs, it was also enjoyable to read about Kelen who recollected bits of his childhood and wasn’t sure where he belonged anymore. The storyline is quite easy to follow, leading to the point where the two main characters meet, which for me was the most exciting moment. The book ends with a cliffhanger I didn’t see coming.

I can’t say there was a lot of action in the novel. The main focus was on Jeru and Kelen. Some of the other threads that started in the book feel incomplete but hopefully will be dwelt on more closely in book 3.
If you loved the first book, I’m sure you’ll love the sequel. It’s a journey worth taking.

Depth and Details

When I started this book after reading 'The Purple Morrow' I wondered how Dyane Forde would follow it. In book two you get to find out more about the characters especially the two lead's Jeru and Kelen. We find out what links the two characters especially after the climax of book one, you are taken on a ride and a journey of their two entirely different worlds and for me it was a slow burn that thrilled me at the end. The last section of the book adds excitement that I thought would leave the trilogy with nowhere to go! But thankfully how wrong was I! There is an excerpt of book three 'Berserker' that seems to flow nicely on which left me wanting more! If you have read book one this book adds another layer to the characters and will leave you wanting answers for a major twist at the end!
