Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley, England in 1866. He apprenticed as a draper before becoming a pupil-teacher at Midhurst Grammar School in West Sussex. Some years later, Wells won a scholarship to the School of Science in London, where he developed a strong interest in biology and evolution, founding and editing the Science Schools Journal. However, he left before graduating to return to teaching, and began to focus increasingly on writing. It was in 1895 that Wells seriously established himself as a writer, with the publication of the now iconic novel, The Time Machine. Wells followed The Time Machine with the equally well-received War of the Worlds (1898), which proved highly popular in the USA. The Cryptofiction Classics series contains a collection of wonderful stories from some of the greatest authors in the genre, including Ambrose Bierce, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jack London. From its roots in cryptozoology, this genre features bizarre, fantastical, and often terrifying tales of mythical and legendary creatures. About the Author

Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Anticipation, anticipation (Anticipation Lyrics by Carly Simon)

Long before I read the story I bought the movie "Empire of the Ants" (1977) starring Joan Collins. There I was just sitting there reading the "HG Wells Huge Collection" on my Kindle when what you think showed up? You guessed it "The Empire of the Ants." Well this is not quite the movie but it is HG Wells at his best.

As with most of Wells's short stories, he put just enough information in there to get you to speculate and then it's over. Somehow, he makes each one of the short stories feel fresh and give you something different to make you speculate "What if?"

"When Captain Gerilleau received instructions to take his new gunboat, the
_Benjamin Constant,_ to Badama on the Batemo arm of the Guaramadema
and there assist the inhabitants against a plague of ants..." HG Wells

In this story, Wells speculates on what made man excel and become the dominant species on earth and could a similar evolution create a rival?

"By 1920 they will be half-way down the Amazon. I fix 1950 or '60 at the latest for the discovery of Europe."

Very nice idea, but

Very nice idea, but, in fact, the story will only let you wonder what it is all about. There are just no solid description of anything, the characters barely come face to face with the supposed 'highly inteligent new species of ants', and absolutely nothing really happens, except for some depiction [quite interesting though] here and there about sailing the Amazon River. That's all, folks!
Anyway, I wouldn't ever tell you not to read it. It's just no waste of time. Maybe it just didn't live up to my expectations.

About the Author
T.M. Williams began her writing career by accident when a song inspired a story about a woman named Carter. What started off as a blip of an idea turned into the Bohemian Grove trilogy, a science-fiction adventure based on the Anunnaki and ancient Sumerian texts. Soon after, the completed manuscript was picked up by a small-press publishing house. Bohemian Grove was released in early 2013 - just a little over a year after she began writing. Since then T.M. Williams has gone on to write Undead Winter, Sun Gate, The Apocalypse, The Melanie King Affair, Alice Hill in silent wonderland, and is currently working on future projects. Originally from Los Angeles, she currently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her husband, son, and two dogs. She writes primarily suspense and paranormal mystery.

Clusters will give you chills

I received this book as an official ARC for review purposes only. T.M. Williams takes you into the woods with her wonderful story about the missing people in our National Forests. She weaves a tale about children missing then mysteriously returning. This tale is focused on Franco. He is a journalist who is doing one last story. He gets a whiff of a cover up and does everything in his power to dig deeper than others had. Sherriff Moore is a by the book small town cop. He like a things his way. The two of them together try to uncover the secrets of the missing children. This is truly a page turner. T.M. Williams has managed to give me chills and opened my eyes to all the horrible disappearances have really happened in our National Forests. Well done. Another great book!

Good book.

Our story is about a reporter - Ethan "Call me Franco" Franco- who starts out writing a story about a local disappearance and ends up trying to figure out why they are so common. Along the way he works with a cast of characters, one of which ends up missing and presumed dead. He faces the typical reaction of families with recent losses toward reporters. William's attitude is a bit more sympathetic toward her character than mine was in the same circumstances but I've experienced a loss that was covered by the press. It wasn't pretty and I feel sorry for the guy who got my sister on the phone after my father drowned, but let's just say that scene hit me pretty hard. Others may not experience the scene the way I did. It's an experience I wouldn't wish on anyone. In a way it actually enhanced my enjoyment of the story. In another it exposed me to a side of my own personality that I'm not real proud of. Either way it was well written and had to be there.

The aforementioned side characters are well done and act right. I was a bit skeptical at first when Franco walks up to be part of a search (and cover it in the process) because I knew what should happen the second the rest of the team found out he was a reporter and it went down just about right. The thing is, Williams used a fairly predictable occurrence to teach us more about Franco and his dedication while giving the characters around him a reason to trust him. He still had to work hard to gain the trust everyone else got but it gave them a reason to let him in. It just worked. I haven't seen many similar situations handled with the same skill or instinct. Kudos to her.

Ever felt as if you were so lost in a book that you have actually felt like you lost yourself from reality

Guessing? You bet! Glues to your reader? Absolutely! Able to do anything else you may need to do? Might as well give that thought up! Once you start there is not turning back! I had the hardest time when it came to to let my reader rest or re- charge. I needed to keep reading just to see where the next page was taking me! Ever felt as if you were so lost in a book that you have actually felt like you lost yourself from reality? This book will take you there! Well written, there's nothing that I can say that I didn't like about this book! I have not reviewed for this author before, but sure am looking forward to more!

Heavy as lead

This has not been an easy book to read in any sense. Sometimes I wonder why I do it to myself: I mean, read books so dense and psychological and European that I can say I'm "subjecting" myself to them. No, I won't be re-reading this one. I am glad I'm now unable to enjoy the book really on its own terms, yet I can also say it was not a waste of time.

What's the angle here, you might ask? Well, it's as much an extreme experiment in style as a novel. This book is almost 100% in the head of one character, and the only one who gets any dialog. He is a disgustingly rich and idle post-dandy who, having "done it all" and fed up with the coarseness of taste of his society (that being 19th century France, no less) retreats into the cloister of his own mansion to pursue the utmost refinement in all things: ideas, books, art, experiences, objects, etc. Selfish and vain to the nth degree, of course. This unholy cloistering and the attendant intense mental rumination happens to be his one true pleasure, yet increasingly a waning one. Yes, it features the full tour-de-force of cultural literacy that such a reading experience would imply, but the annotations in the back of the book lower the bar considerably for readers. Otherwise, you might be shocked by just how educated and discriminating the author can be, and moreover by how graphic.

This edition is a fine, fine example of modern publishing, with annotations so useful and a translation from French so well done that it's even ... decadent. If my interest as a reviewer was only in that, I would have given five stars. But I don't suffer a heavy dish of bleak cynicism gladly.

This was a fairly chilling book for me to read sometimes because I saw a lot of my neurotic "old man" in the protagonist, yet the 20-years-later preface by the author J.K. Huysmans makes it clear that we are not bereft of hope in the New Man. What I mean is, Huysmans eloquently explains that this novel, while despairing, is the rock bottom from which all his later Christian literature builds up. I must say however, that Huysman's brand of literary gloom-and-doom as a foundation for the hope in Christ to follow is not nearly as compelling as that of Dostoevsky's or Flannery O'Conner's. I never felt the implicit presence of God behind the alienation and despair of this character that I felt in reading of that of Dostoevsky's "Underground Man", for one, even though this book's protagonist obsesses over religion much much more. In my experience, the unbendingly SENSATE indulgence of this character's alienation vis a vis that one, really tarnishes it. If Huysmans as a devout Catholic retains deep-set flaws, it's because he remains snobbish and severe and detached from the gregarious aspect of most any other believers' experience. That's not a great way, either.

I think I will later on read the also-famous novels by Huysmans about the Durtral character (really a skew of himself). However, the first those (The Damned) is focused on the garish debauchery of French Satanism (you read that right) and at least as adult and graphic as anything here, and nary a ray of light. And that one came out well AFTER the author's conversion to the religion of Love. Yes, even as a communing Catholic this author was still quite borked in the head. And here I am reviewing his book. Funny that a person like me born in the Near East, and living in Kentucky, USA, ever bought, read, and reviewed a book like this. Stranger than fiction.

A satirical attack on God

The free Kindle e-book lists Harold Hersey and Milo M. Hastings as the authors. I have read that the showman, Billy Rose, should also be considered a co-author as he did far more than merely proofread the chapters as they were written. One reviewer called this short novel, ALICE IN WONDERLAND for atheists, which is a pretty good description, even though the authors skewer and find humor in more than God. There are many bizarre happenings told with some wit. However, about 1/3 of the way through, the wit began to have a sameness about it and became tiring. Humor such as Gud's dog is underdog and the three cats he made for him to chase are copycats were funny the first dozen or so times. So were observations such as she smiled because the word she carved in the tree was the last word. I put it aside to read again later, but found that it is better in small doses. If I have to take it in small doses, I believe I won't take it at all. Some atheists and agnostics may find the book more amusing. Some Christians may find it worthwhile to read how the attacks on God are framed, taking into account Paul's injunction to stand ready to defend our faith.
