"[...] This one exception was easily enough explained. When Owen came to Marvin's attention, fifteen years before, he was a fine, honest, faithful man. It was born and bred in him to be straight. During the first five' or six years in the Marvin household the older man took pains to keep watch on this quiet, tactful youth until he knew all his ways and even his habits of thought. There was no doubt that Owen was as upright and clean as the old man himself. At the age of forty the devil entered into Owen. It came in the form of insomnia. Loss of sleep will make any man irritable and unreasonable, but hardly dishonest. With the sleeplessness, however, came the temptation to take drugs. Owen shifted from one narcotic to another, finally, settling down upon morphine. Five years of[...]".

A Campy Fun Tale
By LS Wagen, Author
The Perils of Pauline first published in 1910 was the epitome of the melodrama. In fact, it brought into vogue the word "cliff hanger" as a plot device in fiction. The book as well as the popular black and white film by the same name has not one but actually 2 cliff hangers written into the story where Pauline is literally hanging on over a cliff waiting to be rescued by her "knight in shining armor" Harry.
That doesn't mean there aren't literary cliff hangers written in every chapter where somehow in some miraculous way usually by Harry, Pauline is rescued from pirates, kidnappers, foreign spies, cowboy robbers, Indians (Native Americans), a gorilla, a lame horse, counterfeiters and murderers. Contrary to popular opinion Pauline is never tied to a train track however.
Pauline meanwhile is told by a publisher that she must get more meaningful adventures if she ever wants to become a writer, thus ensuing the year of adventures while Pauline tries to find adventures to write about. Meanwhile Raymond Owens tries to do in both Pauline and Harry Marvin, Pauline's fiancée and foster brother. With Harry and Pauline both out of the way he would have control over the entire inheritance.
Strange is the fact that her recently deceased adopted father, Mr. Marvin owned a motor company and there are never enough motor cars to go around. Harry and Mr. Owens always seem to disable the few that they have. Also there never seems to be enough drivers to drive Pauline to her perilous adventures. Polly was apparently never taught how to drive, but low and behold in the last chapter Pauline miraculous suddenly knew how to drive all along and drives herself right into another peril - alone with no driver.
Pauline is the typical ditsy blond damsel in distress, and the happy ending of the early twentieth century only has her living happily ever after with Harry and her pet dog. It's interesting that this happily ever after does not entail Pauline pursuing her chosen career which is writing. The tale is full of contradictions. Polly is a college graduate, but is so dumb as to not see that Raymond Owen who actually lives in the household is behind all of these perilious situations that Pauline finds herself involved in but Harry, the male character and our hero, sees the situation as it is. As you can see, The Perils of Pauline is a campy, silly, unbelievable melodrama and a parody of fiction in its own right, but I enjoyed it so much that I wrote a parody of the parody, entitled Pauline's Perils of Perplexity, an eBook which is offered for sale here at Amazon!

Oh No! Watch out, Pauline.
By Miss_Fitt
Though "The Perils Of Pauline" has long been in the area of my knowledge this is the first time that I sat down and read the book. I loved reading it and will probably reread it sometime in the future - provided there is a future. Though I recognize the fiction of the story I found it gripping and a page turner. I would readily recommend this book to anyone I know.

Pathetic Pauline and her Perils
By Susan Kasper
Pearl White, who played Pauline in silent films, was my Moms, aunt, so I wanted to see what these stories were all about. The stories were entertaining at first and could even be made into TV shorts today. But, Pauline' s ignorance regarding Owen's character is as frustrating as the plethora of errors in the printing of this book. In today's world, she'd be deemed an idiot. I was so distracted by the poor editing, syntax and punctuation, finishing the book was a challenge. I would recommend this book to blind optimists.
