Eltanin Publishing's Oz Series - #14

~~ includes ALL the original illustrations (over 120) by John R. Neill, many of them in color, and a new Preface by Oz expert and Eltanin Editor Joseph Nusbaum. ~~

From the Editor’s Preface:
"L. Frank Baum penned Glinda of Oz amidst a 'long and confining illness,' as he described it in his final introductory note “To My Readers” in his prior Oz book, The Magic of Oz. Baum then promised his readers to continue “the Oz Books… as long as I am able to write them…” He did continue, completing Glinda before he died on May 6, 1919. The Magic of Oz was published one month after his death, and Glinda of Oz was issued the following year. ... Glinda of Oz has been noted for its naturalism in contrast to the earlier Oz books. In it, Dorothy and Ozma set out on their own without the aid of manufactured, ambulating folk and magical animals. Perhaps tied to this naturalism, the settings in Glinda are a marked transition from fantasy to that of science-fiction: submersible cities, submarine boats, and steel compounds that can be fashioned into a mobilized city infrastructure. In all of this, Baum seems to be leaving the childlike fairy-story elements of talking animals and fantastic companions behind. Instead, the protagonists rely on scientific advancement, ingenuity, and ultimately friendship and the wisdom of elders to see them through...."

Amazon.com Review
"All children, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children's literature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because the tale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashed up, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is also witty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but they also happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of such throwaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberately obscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and "pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relatively innocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed more safely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of its children's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligence that are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with the dastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... a little bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects: "This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form." A book for adult readers-aloud to revel in--and it just might teach young listeners to fly. (Ages 5 and older) --Richard Farr

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-7-- A pleasure to view, read, and hold, this new edition of an old favorite deserves space in every collection. From jacket painting, to cover (with Tinker Bell embossed in gold), to endpapers (dark maps of Neverland), Gustafson's artwork opens doors to glimpses of old friends and to new interpretations. Fifty oil paintings reveal expressive, changing characters. Peter Pan is dewy-cheeked, spry, wicked. Maternal Wendy is tender, then stoic. Even Hook is at times downcast. The Indians, proud and handsome, avoid stereotype. Masterly composition and use of light create dramatic full-page illustrations, accompanied by cameos of ordinary objects (kite, bear, tea kettle). Compared to Hague's illustrations for Peter Pan (Holt, 1987), which were dark and surreal, these are light and vital. Handsome bookmaking, Barrie's text, and Gustafson's pictures combine to breathe new life into Peter Pan's old shadow. --Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA

From Kirkus Reviews
An unusually large, attractive, unabridged edition with dozens of full-page illustrations and smaller vignettes. In style, Gustafson's lusty oil paintings of the pirates are akin to N. C. Wyeth's, though they have more the flavor of compelling dramatic play than real menace. His slim, round-faced, rosy children and cozy interiors are closer to Wyeth's gifted student, Jessie Wilcox Smith, while the ethereal yet mischievous fairy folk recall Rackham. This is not to suggest that the result is merely derivative, in the manner of Michael Hague; Gustafson is a talented craftsman who skillfully melds his references to past greats to create an appropriately traditional style that has enough of a contemporary aura (especially in the characterizations) for broad popular appeal. An endpaper map of ``The Neverland'' and meticulous renditions of intriguing details add to the drama and fun. A perfect gift for a family that reads aloud. Peter Pan's Deathless Birth-Tale
By Brent R. Swanson
Sir James Barrie first wrote of Peter Pan in "The Little White Bird," published in 1902. This was followed by the play, "Peter Pan," in 1904, which Barrie then adapted into book form as "Peter and Wendy" (sort of the home video edition of play before the days of home video). In 1906, the six Peter Pan chapters of "Little White Bird" were published under the title "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" with illustrations by Arthur Rackham.

If you're more interested in Barrie's modus operandi, his development of the Peter Pan mythos from his relationship with Llewelyn Davies family and their boys, "The Little White Bird" is an essential source. "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" is Peter Pan with much of the autobiographical sentimentality scissored out. While this eliminates some maudlin overtones, it also removes interesting details such as Pilkington, the prototype of Captain Hook, whose "shadow was all over the gardens."

The only edition I have for comparison's sake is the Weathervane facsimile, published in 1975. Dover's edition is big improvement as far as readability is concerned. All the color plates have page references, and are inserted in close proximity to the related text. Overall reproduction of the plates is a trifle smaller and a bit darker than the Weathervane edition, but usually richer in color values and with a bit more clarity. One plate, "Butter is got from the roots of old trees," has come off a little too dark and obscured, but overall, Dover has done a fine job.

For the reader who wants to read more about Peter Pan from the hand of his creator, or who wants to give a child an introduction to the character sans all the commercial and sometimes revisionist ballast that's been added since Barrie's day, this edition is highly recommended.

A classic, when not denatured by Disney
By A. Burke
Yes, there is darkness in Peter Pan - and in Alice, too, and in The Wizard of Oz - and certainly in Felix Salton's Bambi. These books, while written for young people, and which may be described as fantasy, have real plots and real characters who are not perfect. Peter Pan is selfish and stubborn as well as charming because children are not angels - they are little humans. Alice is highly critical of the adults in her dream world - adults who act very arbitrarily and often foolishly, as adults often do. Bambi is about the effects of human cruelty on animals; it deals with death and pain. One of the indications that these are good books, and not merely children's books, is that they can be read at different stages of life with new layers of understanding. You don't have to outgrow them, and they are better than many a book written for adults. The 'real' Pan and Alice and Bambi may not be suitable for the very youngest children, but please don't deprive your children culturally by never giving them anything but Disney's cutesy interpretations. For one thing, Barrie and Salton and Carroll were great writers who used words beautifully and had insightand feeling. Children deserve art as much as adults.

Peter Pan Review
By Katherine Trimble
Peter Pan is the timeless classic everyone has grown up to. It has been passed down from generation to generation but it all started with one man, J. M. Barrie. When anyone tells the story of Peter Pan most adults don't think it is suitable for them. They think that it is simply a children's story and always will be. However, Barrie made sure that this story would be appropriate for all ages. Some of the language might be a bit difficult for the youngest range but the context helps to figure out a funny word or two. It appeals to the older range because of the layers it conceals. Behind each game they play is a message. Hidden under each smile Wendy gives to Peter is her hidden kiss. However, this story relates mostly to teenagers as they are going through the stage of growing up. Just days before I read Peter Pan I thought of how nice it would be to be free of homework and school. I thought how wonderful it would be to grow up and be independent. After reading this story, and seeing it exactly how Barrie told it, I don't want to grow up as much as Peter Pan and Wendy don't want to. I first heard the story, from seeing the movie, at a very young age, probably around the time I was 2 or 3. Disney tried hard to incorporate everything from the book but they didn't get every meaning or all the symbolism. For example, Mrs. Darling and Wendy Darling both have a hidden kiss. This kiss is hidden under the right hand corner of their mouths and only their true love can find it. Because Mr. Darling can't find Mrs. Darling's kiss, perhaps Barrie is trying to say that although she loves Mr. Darling dearly, he isn't her true love. Barrie fills his book with the perfect amount of detail and color. Children don't get bored because there is too much and adults don't need any more. At one point in the story, Barrie writes about the adventures at the lagoon. "If you shut your eyes and are a lucky one, you may see at times a shapeless pool of lovely pale colours suspended in the darkness; then if you squeeze your eyes tighter, the pool begins to take shape, and the colours become so vivid that with another squeeze they must go on fire." It is work like this that captures the reader and makes them never put the book down. The action and the drama are another reason such a wide age range is attached to this story. The lost boys go on countless raids and enticing adventures that children can only dream about. The love story between Peter and Wendy thickens throughout the entire book and we don't know till the end whether the Darlings will return home to England or stay in Neverland forever. Barrie does such an incredible job with the characters I felt I had met each one personally. John and Michael are as adorable as ever, Captain Hook as evil, Tinkerbell as envious, Peter as cocky and Wendy as in love. Though the title expresses that the story is about Peter Pan, I think one of Barrie's hidden messages was that it was really Wendy's story. Peter Pan can meet many more pirates and have many more adventures but Wendy only had that one time with him. She could only be his mother, or possibly his only love, once in her life. She was supposed to go back to Neverland every spring to do Peter's spring cleaning but he forgot almost every year. Barrie might have been trying to show how forgetful little boys are. He also might have been trying to show Peter's denial that Wendy might grow up. If Peter didn't go back then Wendy might not grow up. If he didn't go back he wouldn't be reminded that he lost the love of his life. Barrie did a phenomenal job with this story. His ideas make you wonder why we have to grow up and why none of us have ever been able to see Tink's glow, outside of our dreams. This book is suitable for all ages and the only thing that could make it even better were if we could be in the story ourselves.

"[...] "Perhaps it's mother come home early," Jack suggested, his pale little face brightening; "perhaps one of her pupils didn't take a lesson, or——" But Betty did not hear. She was already halfway across the little hall, and in another moment was standing with the open door in her hand, gazing in surprise at the neat, pleasant-faced servant girl who confronted her. The girl held in her hand a plate covered with a napkin. "Is this Miss Betty Randall?" the stranger inquired, smiling.[...]".

Kind of like The Secret Garden
By S Beddes
If you like old-fashioned books like The Secret Garden, you will probably like this book which was published in 1904. It takes place in an era where people were kinder, gentler, and much more respectful. It's about a young rich woman who was disowned by her father when she married an artist. They moved from England to America and were doing pretty well until her husband died. Now she must support her two children, and the only thing she knows is music. So she gives piano lessons. Things keep getting worse for the little family until a kind doctor and kind neighbors step in to help them. Everything ends very happily.

relaxing read
By Geegee
I have read several stories of Nina Rhoades, all of them enjoyable. This is a story of two children and their mother, cheerfully living through hard times in a third floor apartment. Happily, they make good friends in the building and ultimately find a bright and happy future.

The Old West at its Best!
By Dolores Ayotte
Gun Men by Author Michael Newton

Welcome to the wild west. I have never read a novel in the western genre before and what a treat it is to follow Sloan in his travels across Texas as he makes his way to the Mexican border. Sloan, a notorious gun man, knows no fear and thinks about his possible death on a daily basis. He's prepared one way or the other, shoot to survive or be shot. He's ready either way you look at it as he faces the killings in his past and knows one day they will come back to haunt him.

Chadwell, prominent business man in Bloodroot has a score to settle. Sloan has shot his only son in a main street shoot out. Reminds me of the movie High Noon. Despite his son's bad attitude...deserving death or not...Chadwell wants revenge with a capital R. He has now solicited the aid of another gun man by the name of Lucas Grant. Grant has some history with Sloan and is quite eager to accept the $1000 reward to bring him back DOA...dead or alive.

Meanwhile, Sloan is in the town of Agua Dulce and in no time flat he shoots down two more men. Now he has his work cut out for him as he accepts to stay put and work for Brubaker, a business man similar to Chadwell. His plans to escape to Mexico have been put on hold. Kit Gordon the Marshall of Bloodroot is widening the search for Sloan at the request of Chadwell, who owns him and everyone else in town. Lucas Grant intends to earn his money. In fact, he'd kill Sloan for free, that's how much he hates him. Will he succeed? Only time will tell...

Very enjoyable read. I couldn't put this book down as I just needed to know the outcome.

Well done!
By Erania Pinnera
This book has got all the numbers to be featured among the latest greatest western books.
I really enjoyed it thanks to a number of different elements: the setting, which is very believable as well as the characters, dialogues are brilliant and the plot's pretty intriguing and with the right (fast) pace typical of the westerns.

The writing style is compelling and never too much intrusive: it's clear the author doesn't want to show himself off but wanted to tell the reader a story.
Well done!

... incomparable Michael Newton allowed me to remember why I love a good western
By Tim VanZile
‘Gun Men’ by the incomparable Michael Newton allowed me to remember why I love a good western.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a western as I tend to stick to other genres, however I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be disappointed by this one. Newton is a master at spinning an action-adventure tale as those of us who have read his contributions to The Executioner: Mack Bolan series are well aware of.

So, did this book live up to what I expected. Ummm…duh. For me, this book is like the film ‘Unforgiven’ in that it has brought me back to the Western because of how incredibly well done it is. The characters are all familiar and the reader is immediately allowed to be in their world. A classic tale of bad guy discovering he ain’t so bad after all…we’ve all read them (or watched them) yet this one is able to keep the reader engrossed until the very end.

When I did read Westerns, with the exception of L’Amour, I would always take a while to rad them, funding myself bored and going back for a while to my other genres before returning to the western sitting there on the bedside table. ‘Gun Men’ was not like that for me. I never left the book other than to work, run errands, eat, etc…but never to pick up another book.

If you’ve been thinking it may be time to go back to the West, then this book will not leave you wishing you had not made that choice. One of the masters of the modern-day action-adventure book delivers on this tale set back in the 19th century.

Sexy hot demigods, I love it!!
By Paranormaly Yours
**Book provided by the author for an honest review**
Hailstorm is a spin-off of the Jocelyn Frost series. I have read book one in that series, so I was already familiar with the world the author had created. Hailstorm could be a stand alone in the sense that you don't have to read In-Between Work and Play however, you may find it easier to follow if you do because more is explained in detail about the history and different worlds in the book. For example; the books are based on Greek, Egyptian, and other Gods, so lots of mythical creatures involved to keep track of and how they are related to each God.......there are a lot of them!

I loved this story about Clementine and Shayla. The are two awesomely calm and rational characters when you consider what they woke up to after being drugged. Lets start from the beginning. Both women were kidnapped from a theater on Earth. Clementine wakes up in a strange room, with people talking about her like she is a piece of property for sale. She can not move, and pretends she is sleeping still while she eaves drops on the conversation to find out what is going on. She quickly learns she was being sold as a blood whore for a vampire! Although in her world vampires do not exist, this doesn't seem to be the part that freaks her out, lol. As Clementine is being transported to her new "owner", she is able to escape and take the kidnapped victim Shayla with her. The girls have no idea how much there life will change once they jump off that train, yee haw!

The two ladies are no longer on Earth, they are in Erda, a world where demigods, unicorns, vampires, and such exists, but they don't know this. So they are running from their captors while trying to find help. They run into twins Paxton and Everett, two gorgeous demigods! The brothers were on a quest of there own, which now has been derailed in order to help the clueless humans. During the journey to seek help, the four hook up, not right away, but some sexy times do happen, ya baby! This adventure also reveals some unknown family history, abilities, and interesting new species that were brought up in the original series! We have Freki and Geri whom were just hilarious! They are wolves that were able to communicate telepathically with Clementine, and they kept wanting to castrate Paxton to keep him away from Clementine! Then you have the wepwawet's that were hunting the girls, nasty effers! The wepwawet's were described as being very nasty, mutilated versions of werewolves.

My overall impression of the book is that the story kept my attention, and I definitely wanted more. The story had it's funny haha moments as well as the scary wtf is that attacking them moments. The sexy time moments of course that all came together in a nicely balanced way. I do have to say though the ending........really? It's not a cliff hanger, but the story isn't finished. I want to know what happens! Is there a happily ever after or what! So with that said, I can't wait til the second book! I highly recommend this book if you like fantasy, romance, and danger! And don't forget you have to read the original book also, In-Between Work and Play because it is super cool with the characters, magics and you will learn more about the world and it has more sexy times, tee hee....

Another Awesome Book by Relina Skye
By Heather
I bought Hailstorm on Sunday late evening and finished it Monday. I loved Relina's earlier novel In-Between Work and Play and have to say that Hailstorm was just as awesome. There is never a dull moment, the story starts from page one and the journey begins with twists and turns, and awesome mythological characters. You don't have to have a degree in mythology in order to understand Relina's books, she has a kick-ass glossary of terms to help the reader and does a great job of working in explanations within the story.

If you are looking for an unique and entertaining story with equally unique and entertaining characters, this is the book to read.

It sprang from the solid rock, dominated a gorge, and so stood for many hundred years, during which time the descendants of Ralph exercised baronial rights and enjoyed the favour of their princes. The family, indeed, continued to prosper until 1549, but then disaster overtook them and they disappeared, disgraced. I do not pretend, in giving you the history of this Royal Slave, to entertain my reader with adventures of a feigned hero, whose life and fortunes fancy may manage at the poet's pleasure; nor in relating the truth, design to adorn it with any accidents but such as arrived in earnest to him: and it shall come simply into the world, recommended by its own proper merits and natural intrigues; there being enough of reality to support it, and to render it diverting, without the addition of invention.

About the Author
Aphra Behn was a prolific Restoration-era playwright and one of England’s first professional women writers. In 1663, she visited a Venezuelan sugar colony and met a slave trader, and what she saw there formed the basis for what is now her most famous work Oroonoko. Behn was a Catholic supporter and a Tory, a bisexual and a political spy.

Very moving
By bixodoido
This is a classic story about the horrors of slavery. I've heard this compared to "Uncle Tom's Cabin," but I don't think that's an accurate comparison. The story is about Orookono, an African prince who is deprived of his true love by his grandfather, the king. He is betrayed and sold into slavery, and happens to encounter his lost love in the New World, in the British colony of Suriname. The valiant prince (now called 'Caesar' by his overseers) tries to gain freedom for his wife and family, but in vain. If there is a story that does justice to the horrors of slavery, this is it.
I don't think this is the typical slave narrative because Orookono is a prince. Even the overlords treat him that way, and he seems more a victim of cruel fate than of slavery. Still, this valiant, brave-hearted soul is subjected and finally overcome by the cruel actions of the English colonists.
This story was written at the time the novel was first coming into being in England. It is revolutionary, and becomes even more so when considered that it came from the pen of a woman. Aphra Behn was one of the first major female English writers, and is arguably the best of her time. This is is great (short) novel, definitely well-worth your time.

A Brave New World
By Amazon Customer
This book was required reading for my American Literature course. Why read a story about an African prince in Surinam in an American Lit class? Voyage to a brave new world! That was the theme of the class. It encompassed the whole colonial experience in all of the "Americas". I am glad my professor went that route or I probably would never have read OROONOKO. This is a wonderful read. It is more a love story to me than a slave story. This book was written centuries ago but it is a very easy read. The footnotes in this version are a great help but the context of the story is enough for most readers to not get lost in archaic language. Add this one to your library. It is definitely worth it.

An Important Read
By Katherine Mackenzie
Oroonoko is a complicated novel for me to rate.

I think Virginia Woolf was correct in stating that Aphra Behn's career as a whole was more important than any particular work, but I suppose I still have to rate the novella as it stands. I will start by saying that it's historical context seems to be extremely important in understanding before reading it, and for a few reasons. First, Aphra Behn is considered to be the first woman to make a career for herself* (and without a male pseudonym!) from writing. Oroonoko was published in 1688 near her death to some success, but it's subject matter is just as significant, which brings me to my second point -- Oroonoko is also considered to be the first story written and published in English to show African slaves in a sympathetic manner. For these two reasons alone it is certainly worth reading, but it is not without it's faults as a novel.

If you have no problem with random capitalization, italicized dialog, and no chapter breaks, (it's a short novel so this didn't take it's toll on me) this is an "easy" adventure/tragedy to read. But the subject matter isn't always painless to uncover. As sympathetic to Oroonoko and his loyal Imoinda as it may be, it's sentiments are most definitely not modern and were at times difficult to read.

With everything going for it (and against it), Oroonoko is an interesting and important read that should continue to be discussed and not forgotten, like it nearly was.

*Also, before Behn had even begun her career as a writer, she was a spy for a bit after her husband croaked shortly after marriage. Behn is pretty rad.

And a note on the edition: The Art of the Novella series is great if you haven't already heard of it, the copy is slim and pantone-like. The paper is a nice stock too. I recommend this edition above all the others.

The Four Long Stories of Arthur Conan Doyle
By Acute Observer
The Sherlock Holmes Novels: A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Valley of Fear

“A Study in Scarlet” begins when John H. Watson M.D. is looking for reasonable lodgings. So too Sherlock Holmes (described as cold blooded in outlook). A letter requests help from Holmes. Drebber was found dead in an empty house, no wound on the body, but blood in the room. Holmes & Watson inspect the scene; Holmes explains his deductions. An advertisement is placed in the “Found” column of a newspaper. Detective Gregson visited Holmes to explain how he solved the murder. Lestrade arrives to tell of another murder: Stangerson, Drebber’s secretary ! Gregson’s suspect could not have done it. Holmes shows his brilliance by his surprise introduction of the murderer! Part 2 tells about the events that preceded these murders. Chapter 7 explains Holmes’ actions in reasoning backwards. This story introduced Sherlock Holmes to an audience that never tired of these stories. Note the dialogue followed by explanatory comments. More modern stories use mostly dialogue to carry the story along and bring out the facts. The solution occurs in the last chapters. The use of an exotic American locale was a way to add interest. Background descriptions are sparse. It tells why a man can have a “florid face”, a medical fact.

“The Sign of Four” begins when Miss Mary Morstan consults Holmes. Her father disappeared ten years earlier. For the last six years she received a large pearl in the mail. A letter told her she was wronged and asked for a meeting. Holmes and Watson will accompany her. Their carriage arrives at a new house. They meet Thaddeus Sholto, one of the sons of Major Sholto, the best friend of Mary Morstan’s father. Thaddeus tells what he knows about the story. His brother Bartholomew discovered the hidden treasure. When they arrive they find Bartholomew murdered in a locked room and the treasure missing! The police arrest Thaddeus and the servants as accomplices. Holmes borrowed a dog, they followed the scent to the water’s edge and find information. Holmes located the steam launch, the police boat chased it downstream. Holmes and Watson shoot at a small man, then another man is captured with the treasure chest. He tells about the treasure from the India Mutiny and has the last laugh (Chapter 12). The Four chose to enrich themselves during the India mutiny. A double dealing rajah straddled the conflict and split his assets for safety; this failed because others took advantage of their position. In turn their plan failed because of an unforeseen watcher. The Four who killed for riches were swindled out of their fortune by a clever liar who took advantage of his position. Watson’s reward is a different kind of treasure.

“”The Hound of the Baskervilles” is the best known of Doyle’s long stories. Like the others, it is entertaining and educational. Murders are caused by love and money (or lust and greed), to get it or to keep it. See your local newspapers. Dr. James Mortimer visits Sherlock Holmes over his concern for the new heir of the Baskerville estate. Sir Charles Baskerville recently died under strange conditions, and Sir Henry may also be threatened. Dr. Watson will accompany Sir Henry as a guard (his revolver is handy). Watson learns more about this neighborhood. Holmes arrives, he lacks proof for the solution of the crime. Sir Henry will visit neighbors at night, alone. But Holmes, Lestrade, and Watson follow to rescue Sir Henry from a fiendish attack. Justice isn’t cheated, the villain pays for his crimes. [Was this a critique of an hereditary aristocracy?]

“The Valley of Fear” begins when Inspector MacDonald arrives with news of the horrible murder of Mr. Douglas of Birlstone Manor House, which is isolated by a forty foot moat. Douglas came from golden California a wealthy man. A shotgun blast destroyed his face, only a brand on his arm identified him. Holmes talks to the people involved, he knows some are lying. He is able to solve this killing. This leads to Part 2, a fictionalized story of the anthracite coal wars in 1870s Pennsylvania. Violence during a long strike was answered with violence by the miners. A Pinkerton agent infiltrated the miner’s union, gained their confidence, and began collecting evidence. [No mention of any agent provocateurs to create crimes.] This miner’s group was called the “Mollie Maguires” [but they never used this phrase]. This group was caught in the act, convicted, and hanged. During another recession the mine owner was dismissed from his position and later died a suicide. [This story is little known, a good history book will educate you.]
