At noon we overtook a party of boatmen from the Ohio,—tall men they were, with beards, and dark and dirty as Indians,—and we kept company with them through the country of the Chickasaws and the Choctaws until we came to a high bluff, and saw the Mississippi before us, brown and full and marked with drifting trees, and up the river the white houses of Natchez. There we[...]".

Rather depressing ending, but that's normal for Johnston
By A. Woman
Lewis Rand is a poor boy of the early 1800's. His father is a tobacco farmer and is totally against "book larnin'", but Lewis manages to educate himself. He lucks up on earning the patronage of none other than Thomas Jefferson and grows up to make himself into a successful lawyer. Things continue his way as, against her family's wishes, Lewis wins the hand of the lovely Jacqueline Churchill. There's even talk being bandied about of Lewis becoming governor of Virginia. Then it all goes downhill. Lewis starts to drift away from Jefferson and come under the spell of Aaron Burr. It's no real secret he's planning to throw his lot in with Burr's grandiose schemes of establishing a new kingdom out West. Several people try to talk Lewis out of it. Even Ludwell Cary, Lewis' rival in love and war, tries to save Rand from himself. (At one point I was actually wishing Jacqueline would leave Lewis and hook up with Ludwell, which shows what kind of lead character Lewis is.) As Burr's plans fall apart, Lewis crosses a line that he can't cross back over, which leads to the depressing ending. There's one speech Lewis gives that goes on and on and I skipped over, because Johnston really loves to use as many words as she can, but compared to her other works she keeps herself in check most of the time for this novel.
