Wonderfully entertaining and spiritually rich

I discovered there are four books in this series that are available for Kindle (What She Could, Opportunities, The House in Town, and Trading), but I suspect there is a fifth that is not available, since the fourth book doesn't seem to be the end of the story. It's a great story (if you are a serious Christian yourself--otherwise you will find it too "religious"). It begins with the book titled What She Could, which is not that compelling. I would start with Opportunites, which IS compelling. A really good villain is provided in that book--always enjoyable in a book, I think. All the characters are as real as can be, and I particularly liked Norton--he was both funny and extremely likable. I wonder if the main character, Matilda, married him in the end. I hope so, but there were other possibilites for her as well. Wish I could find the fifth book, if there is one.

The story itself is great, but author's style (many indirect discourses, person uttering some part of a dialogue, sometimes indirect, constantly switching and so on) and old german words (some without clear descendants today, some with just another spelling) makes it a pain to read. I could avance no more than a page per day.

Hawk Carse Returns!

This is the second in the series of Hawk Carse novelettes which Harry Bates wote for Astounding Stories in the early 1930s. (Bates, who was editing Astounding at the time, used the "Anthony Gilmore" pseudonym for stories he bought from himself.)

Much of what I said about the first Carse story in my review of that book Hawk Carse applies to this one. It is a fast, fun read, but quite dated in its style-- purple prose, impossibly pure-hearted heroes and dastardly villains, preposterous action. But while the first Hawk Carse story was basically a western set in outer space, this one has an actual science fiction plot, in which the villain steals the brains(!) of famous scientists to power his superscience machine, until Hawk Carse (and his intrepid African-American sidekick) fly in to rescue the solar system.

Great for Your Book Group

"My dear, it's not what you say that interests men, it's how you look and what you have on...You need just one thing, money. And you can't do anything about that, you have to wait for your husband."—thirty-one year old Amy Lanier to twenty-two year old sister Ethel Knight.
This interesting quote very early in His Second Wife pretty well focuses on the main point of the novel. Set in upper middle class early 20th Century New York City it also features second wives, feminism, absence of God, materialism versus idealism, the large city, servants, children, multiple marriages, "round robin" letters, summers at the seashore, private detectives, Paris, and the importance of friends. Like The Harbor and His Family, there is a missing woman who is both wife and mother, resulting in a very paternalistic family structure. The opening quote pretty well reinforces this idea.

Emily at the age of twenty-two is forced by the death of her father to move from a small town southern Ohio environment to New York City to live with sister Amy and her husband Joe. We see a clash between two sisters who have quite different views of wealth and idealism and how to attain them. The oppressiveness of the city makes accomplishment of either goal difficult. And very soon Ethel finds herself married—to a recently widowed man. Being a second wife brings enough problems that Ethel must deal with, but soon many other struggles come crashing down on her. She is facing all of this alone in the large city. Not only does she need resolutions to the challenges, but more than anything she needs a friend. And she needs to learn how to "fit in" with a city that is not often kind to strangers.

Though set in 1918-1920 there is no mention of the Great War, Prohibition, or the 19th Amendment, though there is a passing nod to the suffrage movement. In this sense, the novel could be considered quite timeless, as many of the issues that rise in the novel are still relevant today.

Divine Providence

If you believe in Divine Providence, this is an interesting read. All of Adeline Sargeant's works are inundated with this concept, and if you have an issue with it, you will feel the story so contrived that it would be frustrating. I have read many of her works, as I enjoy her characters and the historical information her novels provide. Some of her characters are somewhat one dimensional, but others are very well developed and complex. Under False Pretences was a good read. Her novel a "Life Sentence" is even better.

The book is very intricate in the development of the characters. The plots for each is vert divergent,bun in the end there is a very satisfying solution for each. The book was very riveting.
