About the Author
William Dean Howells was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, on March 1, 1837. His father was a printer and newspaperman, and the family moved from town to town. Howells went to school where he could. As a boy he began learning the printer’s skill. By the time he was in his teens he was setting type for his own verse. Between 1856 and 1861 he worked as a reporter for the Ohio State Journal. About this time his poems began to appear in the Atlantic Monthly. His campaign biography of Abraham Lincoln, compiled in 1860, prompted the administration to offer him the consulship at Venice, a post he held from 1861 to 1865. He married Elinor Gertrude Meade, a young woman from Vermont, in 1862 Paris. On his return to the United States in 1865, Howells worked in New York before going to Boston as assistant to James T. Fields of The Atlantic Monthly. In 1871 he became editor-in-chief of the magazine. In this position he worked with many young writers, among them Mark Twain and Henry James, both of whom became his close friends. His first novel, Their Wedding Journey, appeared in 1872. The Rise of Silas Lapham was serialized in Century Magazine before it was published in book form in 1885. A Hazard of New Fortunes was published five years later. His position as critic, writer, and enthusiastic exponent of the new realism earned William Dean Howells the respected title of Dean of American Letters. He died in 1920.

realistic window into another literary age

My friend Paul caught me reading this book and said "Wow, I'd have to believe that I was nearly immortal in order to read Howells." For the early 1880s, though, this is a pretty readable book. The ideas are familiar: "Money is to the fore now. It is the romance, the poetry of our age. It's the thing that chiefly strikes the imagination. The Englishmen who come here are more curious about the great new millionaires than about any one else, and they respect them more." (Rise of Silas Lapham)
My favorite section from The Rise of Silas Lapham: "This comes of the error which I have often deprecated," said the elder Corey. "In fact I am always saying that the Bostonian ought never to leave Boston. Then he knows--and then only--that there can be no standard but ours. But we are constantly going away, and coming back with our convictions shaken to their foundations. One man goes to England, and returns with the conception of a grander social life; another comes home from Germany with the ntion of a more searching intellectual activity; a fellow just back from Paris has the absurdest ideas of art and literature; and you revert to us from the cowboys of Texas, and tell us to our faces that we ought to try Papa Lapham by a jury of his peers. It ought to be stopped--it ought, really. The Bostonian who leaves Boston ought to be condemned to perpetual exile."
If these novels lack the genius of Edith Wharton or Henry James they provide a much more realistic view of American life circa 1880. You might not learn as much about the interior of the human heart but you'll learn something about how people got from place to place, furnished their houses, and managed businesses.

Great introduction to Howells

William Dean Howells is one of those writers who everyone respects and recognizes as an important figure in American literature yet very few people read. This collection offers an excellent introduction. Four of Howells's greatest works are here. "A Foregone Conclusion" and "Indian Summer" are charming romances based in Italy. With the possible exception of James, there is no other male writer from the Gilded Age who captures American women better than Howells as the female leads from both novels show. Howells also offers some interesting social commentary on both Italy and America. Howells had a political background (he wrote offical biographies of both Lincoln and R.B.Hayes) and this is reflected in both novels. Both stories could be conventional romances; but with a skillful author like Howells, these tales are lifted to excellent studies of character, place, society and his times. "A Modern Instance" and "The Rise of Silas Lapham" are much more realistic and are set in the United States. They are also darker. Howell examines the newly rich, journalism, industry and the changes in the Republic during his life. He also continues to portray excellent characters. While these four novels are only a fraction of what Howells wrote (the man wrote over 100 books, including over 35 novels), they provide an excellent starting point. These books have quick plots, lovely images, memorable characters and offer insight into the human heart and into a distant past. The Library of America can be commended for its solid job in assembling this book. Both scholars and general readers will enjoy this collection.

Unjustly Forgotten

Too bad that Howells is one of the forgotten American novelists of the 19th century. If you exclude HUCKLEBERRY FINN, he's a much better writer of novels than Twain. A CONNECTICUT YANKEE and THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER are third-rate stuff, whereas SILAS LAPHAM, A HAZARD OF NEW FORTUNES, and A MODERN INSTANCE are all good reads.

Lionel Trilling once opined that when Henry James reputation was on the rise in the 1930s-40s and when Twain was receiving a lot of attention, Henry Steele Commanger (sp?) edited an edition of four of Howells novels that had no effect on his reputation.

To be enshrined in the Library of America is all well and good, but there are also volumes in this series by Jack London and Upton Sinclair, two writers who are happily forgotten by most readers. Historical status, not literary merit, is the criterion for the Library.

I'd suggest that if you like Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, Henry James, and Twain, you should try Howells. You won't think him a great discovery or the equal of any of the aforementioned (Twain excepted), but you might be pleasantly surprised.

About the Author
P. G. Wodehouse (1881 1975) spent much of his life in Southampton, New York, but was born in England and educated in Surrey. He became an American citizen in 1955. In a literary career spanning more than seventy years, he published more than ninety books and twenty film scripts, and collaborated on more than thirty plays and musical comedies.

An early delight

Weighing in at around 90 pages, this may seem a rather minor bit of Wodehouseana. But it really is a rare find. These six stories form a serial which ran in the Pictorial Review in 1916. Even at this early date PGW had mastered the short story form, and it's not exactly right to call these short stories. Magazine writing is its own form, and as many readers know, most of his later novels first appeared as serials in magazines, primarily the Saturday Evening Post. Numerous bits that would later crop up as Woosterisms or bits from Barmy Phipps or Bingo Little are here already finding print, presaging the sort of themes that would develop during the roaring 'twenties.

Which also ties in, as this slim volume (too slim to have printing on the spine) comes from Boomer Books/ Waking Lion Press. As attractively designed as the cover is, the real surprise is on the back, in the color logo for Boomer Books. It features art by Jazz Age cartoonist and illustrator John Held, Jr., one of this writer's personal favorites. The Boomer series is not large print, but the font is a bit larger, and chosen for relaxed reading. The books are reasonably priced, attractively designed, well lain out, really a joy to read, and, the library includes, at least in this case, some rare finds. I, for one, will be hunting down more of them.

Oh boy, PG Wodehouse and Jeeves,too.

I have long been an ardent fan of Mr. Wodehouse's delightfully frothy and funny tales of British bluebloods, and an amazing coterie of frightening aunts, sneaky-smart servants, blissfully idiotic men-about-town, lovely steely-eyed (and steely-willed) heroines, fat and rich American industrial magnates, golfers of every stripe and shade, and animals who own the houses and castles their people live in, and fat rude little kids (I so love run-on sentences :-)). I have rescued his books from flea-markets, bought some new, "borrowed" some from acquaintances who don't appreciate them, and now I have discovered Amazon, which, amazingly, gives me a shot at ol' PG for free even. He makes me laugh, over and over, even when I crank up an old favorite. I probably "own" 40 or so, and even so, Amazon has shown me 3 or 4, to my amused delight, "PGs" that are new to me. Thank you, Amazon, now I have to buy those. I guess this is a Wodehouse review, not any one book, but so what, I enjoyed writing it. I did, indeed, "buy" all the ones you offered, give me more, and we'll talk real money here. :-)

Two Good, Four Not So Good

P.G. Wodehouse's "A Man of Means" is a collection of six very short stories following the life of Roland Bleke. I found the first two stories to be very nice: Roland is a nice guy who's bumbling around and ends up with people who try to take advantage of him. Without even knowing this is happening, he ends up ahead in the situation. "Nice" pretty much summarizes these. But, the remaining four stories follow a monotonically decreasing path. In each, Roland does things he shouldn't, gets involved with people who he shouldn't, and by happenstance, avoids the problems. In theory, it's the same plot-line of the first two stories. But, in these cases, it's not "nice." It's actually increasingly painful. Each story is less pleasant (more unpleasant, actually) than the previous one. So, all I can rate the book at is a Not Very Good 2 stars out of 5.

The players' voices emit every nuance required to let listeners experience the swashbuckling deeds of the famous heroic threesome and the boy called D'Artagnan who wants to join their ranks. When the young man arrives in Paris with the wish to enlist with the King's Musketeers, he finds himself challenged to three duels in his first afternoon in the city by men who turn out to be Porthos, Aramis, and Athos-the Three Musketeers. Instead of fighting against them, the twists of fate have D'Artagnan battling for them against the evil Cardinal Richelieu's guards. After demonstrating his worth with a sword, D'Artagnan proves more of his mettle by journeying to England to foil a plot to embarrass France's Queen Anne, the former Anne of Austria. D'Artagnan saves his queen but loses the woman he loves, so he seeks vengeance and, in turn, instills himself firmly in the ranks of the Musketeers. The flavor of the original is evident even though this abridged version includes only highlights in its retelling.

A perennial favorite, this work continues to hold appeal for adventure lovers. Full of intrigue, swordplay, and revenge, it is the story of d'Artagnan, a young nobleman who travels to Paris in hopes of joining the Musketeers, a group of swashbuckling adventurers who serve King Louis XIII. His wit and fighting ability make d'Artagnan a welcome addition to their ranks, and together the four young men work to foil the King's evil rival, Cardinal Richelieu. Despite the period setting and constant violence, the story captures and sustains the listener's interest as the Musketeers vanquish the villains. Michael York reads superbly, his rich baritone voice giving each role convincing clarity. The audio format is particularly suited to the tale. The production quality is excellent. Recommended for general collections.

A Pleasant Surprise

The only reason I picked up the book was because it was one of "those" books in the school library. You wanted to read it for the points, but everybody who picked it up gaze up and put it back down. *I* even tried to read it once and gave up. But I'm always up for a challenge. The next year I checked it out and informed everybody I knew that I was going to be one of the first people in our school to read the book. Then I decided to begin reading.
The first couple pages are basically one long paragraph that doesn't make sense unless you're re-reading it and already know the characters and what's going on. I was tempted to put it down, but I wasn't going to back down. By about page 30, it was easy to read, and I began to get into it.
What I discovered was that this is possibly one of the best pieces of fiction ever written. I couldn't put it down, and spent a whole Saturday reading it. I never expected it to be what it was from what I'd read on the back. But then, the plot is so complex, and there are so many sub-plots that you wonder how anyone can do it justice.
I read once that many people associate the word "classic" with the word "boring". As I've discovered, this is entirely not true. When I thought about it, the reason books become classics aren't because they're old and boring, but because people love them, because they are read by millions. The reason that they lasted for so long is because people kept them alive. I'm sure that in a century from now, only a select few books that we enjoy will still be in print, and those particular books will be the best of our time, just as The Three Musketeers was the best of its time.
I'm sorry if this review didn't suffice, I'm just hoping that maybe somebody will read it and give it a try. So far I haven't talked anyone I know into reading it, but they're not bookworms like me. People are intimidated by its size, but from my experience, the best books are the largest. When an author really has a story to tell, one that you will enjoy, one that has a complex, satisfying plot, then it's going to be long.

Huzzah!

An "endless adventure" breathlessly moving from one scene to the next: sword-fighting, court espionage, sex scandals, poisonings, assassinations, undying love and so on.

'Les Trois Mousquetaires', first published in 1844, was soon translated into three English versions by 1846. One of these, by William Barrow, is still in print and fairly faithful to the original, available in the Oxford World's Classics 1999 edition. However all of the explicit and many of the implicit references to sexuality had been removed to conform to 19th century English standards of morality, thus making the scenes between d'Aragnan and Milady, for example, confusing and strange. The most recent and new standard English translation is by award-winning translator Richard Pevear (2006). Pevear says in his translation notes that most of the modern translations available today are "textbook examples of bad translation practices" which "give their readers an extremely distorted notion of Dumas's writing." Thankfully we have high quality translations like this one now available.

Not all "Three Musketeers" are alike!

If one were to search for "The Three Musketeers" in Amazon's Kindle store, you might find several listings, some free, some for $0.99. AVOID THEM! Most are repackaged versions of the same stilted translation by William Barrow which reads like a 2nd year French student's term paper. It captures nearly all of Dumas' words and none of his nuance. Also, be warned that some of these packages are abridged versions and do not advertise themselves as such.

I heartily recommend the Lowell Bair 1984 translation printed by Bantam Books and available for Kindle here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Three-Musketeers-ebook/dp/B000FC29H0/ref=tmm_kin_title_7?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1301931164&sr=1-1-catcorr. This most excellent translation is fresh, modern and faithful to both the spirit, grace, and the character of Dumas' authorized editions (there were at least three). Bair's translation is both literate and elegant. Unlike the Mobi/Project Gutenberg/Barrow version(s?), it never forces you to rearrange 19th century French grammar and syntax into modern 20th/21st century English. Bair does this for you without distilling out any of the flavor and panache that Dumas (et alia) infused into the original serials.

Similar to Bair's artistry is that of LeClerq (http://www.amazon.com/The-Three-Musketeers-ebook/dp/B000FC1KNY/ref=tmm_kin_title_popover?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1301931164&sr=1-1-catcorr) and Pevear (http://www.amazon.com/Three-Musketeers-Penguin-Classics-ebook/dp/B000Q9J0QA/ref=tmm_kin_title_8?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&qid=1301931164&sr=1-1-catcorr). Why the Pevear Penguin edition costs three times what Bair's and LeClerq's do is beyond me since I only sampled the Kindle version. However, I have read Bair's in hardcopy and recommend it for your Kindle reading pleasure. If you really are hard pressed for cash, then by all means: go for the free/cheap versions. Just remember, cheap does not bode well for quality.

About the Author
Rachel Berman earned a Ph.D. in Family Studies at the University of Guelph in 2000. She taught feminist research methods at York University and McMaster University prior to joining the School of Early Childhood Studies at Ryerson. She currently teaches courses on social research with children, theoretical frameworks for early childhood studies, and families and educational equity. Her research focuses on methods of inquiry, mothering, and perspectives of children and youth. She lives in Toronto with her two boys and two cats.

Lost History Found!

A book with lots of life, an intriguing plot and a main character I'd be happy to follow along after for a good number of years. Rachel Berman writes with real assurance. The story is easy to follow even as it juggles multiple time periods, shifting locations and a large cast of characters. I don't know as much about Jane Austen as I should -- or share the protagonist's fixations -- but that didn't prove a hindrance to enjoyment of the book. And now I'll pull "Pride and Predjudice" and "Emma" off the shelf again, while I'm waiting for Violet to charge off on her next adventure.

A Page Turner for All Jane Austen Fans!

Wow! What a ride. "Aerendgast: The Lost History of Jane Austen" is a page turner, and I could not put it down! The pace is fantastic, and the characters are complex. You have Jane Austen herself, as a ghost or spirit at unrest, Violet Desmond, the British Literature Professor, who the mystery revolves around, Peter the treasure hunter/Archeologist who struggles with his desire to make a come back in the ancient artifacts world, the Desmond family, who promised to protect the Athertons, a crazy villian named Lockhurst, and Everest, a cop and possible villian. All in all, this story is one of the best I've read in years. This book took six years to write, and it shows. The complexity of the story and the historical facts, plus the author's imaginative ones makes this one of the best fan fiction books ever written. Honestly,I will probably reread it, just to catch my breath.

I'm a big Jane Austen fan, and I loved the unique take on a woman who has been talked about in so many different ways. I really enjoyed the intrigue and mystery of this novel. Plus, there's so many wonderful references to English culture. Aerendgast was such a treat. Highly recommended!

Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life by George Eliot has been proclaimed by more than one writer as the greatest novel in the English language. Virginia Woolf, in her assessment, called it "the magnificent book that, with all its imperfections, is one of the few English novels written for grown-up people." Who am I to disagree?

The book marked another glaring gap in my literary education and so I resolved to fill that gap in 2015. There were times during its reading that I thought it might take me the entire year to fulfill my resolution. At more than 800 very wordy pages, it requires a commitment of time and attention.

I had somehow expected the novel to be difficult to get into, as 19th century literature sometimes is, but I was surprised to find that the narrative captured me almost from the first sentence and I was eager to learn just how the story would reveal itself.

Middlemarch is most definitely not a quick and easy read though. Written for a 19th century audience that expected very detailed descriptions and explanations of backgrounds for the characters and plots of the novels they read, George Eliot, I am sure, fully met those expectations with this epic tale.

The action of the novel takes place during 1830-32 in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch in England. It was written more than thirty years after that time and so the author was able to write it as one looking back upon events with the perspective of history.

There is an almost bewildering number of characters. The reader sometimes feels that she is making the acquaintance of every single soul in the town, but, in fact, the action focuses on three main characters and it is through them that everything else is revealed.

The central character is Dorothea Brooke, a well-to-do young woman who has been brought up, with her sister Celia, by their uncle Mr. Brooke, who is himself a bit of a comical character. Dorothea is intelligent and highly idealistic and she longs to lead a life of the mind. Her uncle expects her to marry their wealthy, well-respected neighbor, Sir James Chettam, but Dorothea chooses instead an intellectual, a dry pedantic scholar named Edward Casaubon who is several decades older than she. He is not in robust health and the thoroughly predictable happens. He dies some eighteen months after the marriage, leaving Dorothea even more wealthy. But before he dies, he writes a codicil to his will, that states that if Dorothea should marry his young cousin, Will Ladislaw, she will forfeit the estate.

Dorothea had first met Ladislaw on her honeymoon in Italy and there was an instant connection between them, as they talked and found they had many interests in common. Casaubon, a very jealous man, was determined to stop that relationship from developing any further.

Meanwhile, Tertius Lydgate, who was an idealistic young doctor who had modern ideas about reform of the medical profession, had arrived in Middlemarch and was trying to set up a practice and make his way there. Lydgate gets to know the town's financier, Mr. Bulstrode, whom, we slowly learn, has a checkered and secret past.

Bulstrode had married into the Vincy family and had a niece, Rosamund Vincy, who was the daughter of the mayor and was considered the town's great beauty. Lydgate was captivated by her appearance, giving scarcely a thought to her character (which was hopelessly shallow and self-centered) and he determined to marry her.

Rosamund had a brother, Fred, who is the third major character through whose eyes we see the "provincial life" revealed. He is university-educated, restless, and irresponsible, supposedly destined for the church (by his family) and thoroughly unhappy about that prospect. He has long - since childhood, in fact - been in love with Mary Garth, daughter of an estate manager and considered by his family to be far beneath him socially and not a suitable wife. Mary returns his feelings but tells him that she will never accept him if he goes into the church - because she knows that he would be miserable in that profession.

As we get to know these characters and all their associations with others in the town, we also get a sense of the issues of the day. We learn something, for example, of the Great Reform Bill that was hotly debated at the time and of the construction of a new mode of transportation, the railways. We also see, through Lydgate and his associations, something of the state of medical science at that time. As the community faces many changes related to these issues, we encounter the deeply reactionary mindset of the settled community, a mindset that is the living definition of "provincial."

It is remarkable that for almost 150 years, Middlemarch has been able to retain its status as one of the masterpieces of English fiction. This is true in spite of some of the quibbles expressed by some reviewers and readers about the ultimate destiny of some of the characters, especially Dorothea, whom the reader comes to identify with so thoroughly and to have such high hopes for. In the end, she subordinates her life and desires to those of the man she loves, Ladislaw. But even though she did not, perhaps, make her own distinctive mark in the world, George Eliot speaks in her final paragraph of her hidden influence:

"But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs."

Many of us would be happy with such an epitaph.

Last 20% of Middlemarch is Fantastic, but It Takes A Long March to Get There

The last 20% of this book was a page-turner, as the different threads came together in a powerful and poignant way. Past sins are exposed, idealists are caught up in the quagmire of reality, and mis-communications threatens to stifle budding young loves. The quality of the prose was first-rate, and the character depth and portrayals were among the best I've ever encountered.

With that said, the first 80% of the book was too slow, plodding, and filled with narrator intrusion for me to give the overall experience 5 stars. Indeed, the first 80% of the book was, for the most part, just good enough to keep plodding along, and I, like other readers, contemplated more than once simply putting the thing down. I'm glad I didn't, but the Victorian era prose can be difficult for modern American hayseeds like me.

If you're patient and/or simply enjoy a narrator who takes her time getting to the point, then you'll be more likely to enjoy this book.

If you like clever use of language

It would be presumptuous of me to attempt to critique this classic piece of English literature. Real scholars have proclaimed it to be one of the best-written books in the English language. I would not disagree. Essentially an epic romance, the story is a study of human nature, reason and politics, delivered with English sophistication, wit and humor. If you like clever use of language, you will like this book.

"Little Women," - The Original

Like the previous reviewer, I was surprised to find that he book I had been occasionally rereading for over 50 years was NOT the original novel. My own copy, much loved and well thumbed, has been with me since I was a ten year old. I bought the Kindle version just to have it in my portable library, since I thought I knew it almost by heart. To my surprise, when I started looking it over, I found that the book was not the same at all. My original copy must have been "modernized" at some point. All of the familiar passages were there, but there was a great deal that I didn't remember reading before. Some of that was a specifically Victorian kind of moralizing, but there was also some expansion of the story.. I'm not sure that I would have appreciated it all when I was younger, but I found it a delight to read now, as an example of a book of its times. Now I'm going to download the rest of the Alcott catalogue and see how it compares to the books I thought were the originals when I read them many years ago. This was still an exemplary book. It will always be one of the classics.

Whole Story edition is only half a story - I'm shocked!

I was so, so looking forward to reading "Little Women" to my daughter, so she could be caught up in it as I was at an early age. I particularly chose the "Whole Story" edition because of its broad margins, easy-to-scan pages, and charming illustrations and margin notes that add historical texture to the story.

Imagine my shock to discover that at the end of THIS edition, Jo has not written a book, Amy has not gone off to Europe, Professor Baer has not made an appearance of any kind and....you'll never believe this....Beth is still carrying on a conversation (I'm trying not to spoil the plot of the real thing here).

That's because, apparently, "Little Women" was initially published in two parts ("Little Women" and "Good Wives"), which are generally published as the same book. Whole Story has chosen to stop at the half-way point, so much of the story you remember, loved, cried, and laughed over is just not here.

Imagine getting only the first half of Tom Sawyer...leave him stranded on the island forever!

I feel completely conned. It's a five-star story - make that maybe even a seven-star story - but it's a one-star edition.

An American classic.

I am a 14-year-old girl and just got around to reading Little Women about a year ago. It is a great American classic written by Louisa May Alcott. It is about the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. They live in New England during the Civil War. They are poor, but they try to make the best of it as they grow and learn. We follow them through good times and bad as they, with help from Marmee and Laurie (their next-door neighbor), bear their own unique burdens. Meg's is poverty, Jo's is her temper, Beth's burden is not being able to play on a piano, and Amy's is her unaristocratic nose. (as funny as that sounds) You'll fall in love with Jo's oddities just as much as with Beth's gentil manners. It is a great book that everyone should read!

About the Author
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930.He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects.His greatest achievement was his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr. Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction.

A Doyle take on nearly-cosmic horrors

Eh. It's okay. A non-Sherlock story, about a pilot who challenges current height records. He speculates that there will be "air-jungles," full of creatures which have thus-far preyed on the other pilots whom have dared stray so far. In which theory he is proven correct.

Probably a good pick for Lovecraft fans, and, I have to say, I like this a bit more than the majority Lovecraftian horror. There, you get a vague description and then just rambling madness, but this is more scientific. The air-jungles are terrible, but also fascinating. It almost makes you wish they did exist.

This story is in the public domain, and so can be read or listened to from multiple sources for free. I listened to the free audio production from Psuedopod.
