Great piece of literature, cheap-looking cover.

Five stars for the world-famous masterpiece, a classic.

One star for the book itself: you would expect a very elegant, luxurious-looking cover from seeing the picture.
However, it looks as if it was the printed photo of an actual green leather, golden-printed cover. I was really disappointed by the looks of the book because I collect books and I was hoping for a pretty edition. It's basically cheap looking.

For over $12, I was expecting better. Would not recommend if you're into aesthetics.

About the Author
Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

Simple conversion of public domain text

Review for Kindle Classics edition of Kim: B0011Q61BO:

No italics (except on verses). Straight quotes. Dashes are hyphens. Paragraph breaks are OK, but spaced as well as indented. Verses at least have lines on separate lines, but not well formatted. Extra page breaks after chapter headings.
Usual typos, e.g. Busts for buts. Pincers for pencase.

There are better editions available. If you're looking for a Kindle edition of Kim, don't just search for "Kim". That only finds a few of the many editions. Search for "Kim Kipling" (without the quotes) to find the 30 or so editions available. And also look for my review "Kindle Edition Choice is critical" for a review of all the available editions as of May 2010.

Boy to man

A great classic, by a great writer, about a young Anglo-Indian boy's journey from youth to manhood. I appreciate the spiritual overtones and cultural validity. In my reading of this and a different book, I am learning about old and modern India.

A partially revised text, with poor formatting, and expensive.

Review for Kindle edition of Kim: B003K1590M:

No cover. No Italics. Curly quotes. Dashes are Dashes for the most part, but oddly spaced - often a space only on one side of the dash. Blue text! Paragraphs are wrapped nicely, and first line indented. First paragraph in a chapter is also indented, but does at least start with some emphasis of the first word. But some paragraphs are not indented just on the first line, but on all lines of the paragraph - very peculiar. And some of the paragraph breaks are incorrect.
No Table of contents in Menu, but hyperlinked TOC is in the text at the start of the book - with page numbers!

This version isn't based on the same text as so many of the other versions of Kim on Amazon, but seems to be a new electronic version of a text somewhere between the 1901 text and the 1937 text. It has only a few typos and has British spelling.

An interesting version - but possibly only to me, with my close interest in the text.

As a reading edition it's not good. The relatively good text is let down by poor formatting throughout, and all the italics in the text are lost.

And $4.95!

There are better, cheaper editions available.

another early-1900s best seller

This book is a sequel to The Flying Mercury. There's not much overlap in the characters, but there are a couple of mentions that give away one of the plot twists of the previous novel, so be warned if you read them in the wrong order.

Like its predecessor, this story is set in the early days of auto racing. I thought this one had a darker tone and more complex story involving honor and deceit. Here again we have a hero who is impossibly perfect -- not only is he a top race car driver and brilliant engineer, he also has stunning good looks and is a gifted natural athlete, and is possessed of incredible tact and patience. It's a given that things will resolve themselves so everyone lives Happily Ever After, but the story held my attention and you can't beat the price of this book!

Le tourment des hommes

Guy de Maupassant is considered as the "maitre du realisme" [Dictionnaire Larousse] of 19th Century. This edition contains a total of 13 short stories which 6 I didn't like. It's my first introduction du Maupassant literary style.

Before I delve further into the specifics of these short stories, I would like to point that it was such a delight to read them. I was surprised to notice that the French level was easy to read. I barely had to use the dictionary. I enjoyed the exquisite descriptions and the unique style of most of them. These short stories are diversified in themes and literary styles. Not all of them deal with "le surnaturel".

The three major aspects which I enjoyed were:

1. The notion that fear is the starting/departing point to "le surnaturel" and "la folie".

"Le Horla, l'Auberge et Amour "

2. The presence of humor in an unexpected manner.

"Le Trou,"

3. The Depiction of "le naturalisme"

"Une famille, le Vagabond"

"Le Horla et l'Auberge" were my two top favorite short stories.

In "Le Horla", Maupassant presents the theme of "la demence", dementia. The main character is an affluent unmarried man who lives on the outdoors of the city in a white mansion with servants. He does not need to work. In this latest version, we are directly engulfed in his diaries entries up front. They are funny yet peculiar and intimate. The character narrates about his interior fear that affects his well being which leads him to anxiety and to reflect on the ills of loneliness.

"Certes, la solitude est dangereuse pour les intelligences qui travaillent. Il nous faut autour de nous, des hommes qui pensent et qui parlent. Quand nous sommes seuls longtemps, nous peuplons le vide de fantomes." (p.50 - Folio classique edition #3242)

Then, he starts being haunted by nightmares and this acknowledgment of an invisible being: "Je me demande si je suis fou" (p.61). Thus naming him "Le Horla". As the hallucinations starts to worsen, the journal entries are more frequent. Even though his paranoia starts to get more serious, the author finds a way to make you laugh all along.

Apart from the distinct descriptions and the humor, the particularity of "Le Horla" lies on the notion that the character, even though crazy, has not lost his intelligence nor his logic. Which goes against the general definition of "la folie". He is able to maintain his sane faculties of judgment. This aspect is more noticeable on the original version of this short story which is included in this edition. Here, the character is already admitted in an asylum and he narrates his story with certainty of his observations. The story ends with the doctor uncertainty to determine if he is demented.

"L'Auberge" tells the story of Ulrich who becomes crazy due to isolation in the mountains during the strong snowy winter time. The description of the majestic beauty of the mountains reminded me, at times, of [Frankenstein]. But soon the enigmatic presence of these mountains and the heavy snow storm project a surreal, haunting presence to Ulrich. The isolation heightens his solitude.

"Et il se sentait seul, le miserable, comme aucun homme n'avait jamais ete seul! Il etait seul dans cet immense desert de neige, seul a deux mille metres au-dessus de la terre habitee, au-dessus des maisons humaines, au-dessus de la vie qui s'agite, bruit et palpite, seul dans le ciel glace!" (p.218)

The fear leads him to alcoholism and later to hallucinations. I will not tell you the break down of the plot but I recommend you read this short story.

"Le Vagabond" is the only short story with a social agenda in this series. Here, the character is unemployed for more than 3 months and is unable to find a job. The rise of his frustration and rage is what Maupassant developed as: "naturalisme de la colere".
France was dealing, at the time, with high rates of unemployment and the state did not provide any form of help nor social structure to develop more jobs. The absurdity of the story is that Randel is emprisonned for "vagabondage et de mendicite" (p.236). As it was considered a crime to venture around asking for job.

"La mendicite est interdite sur le territoire de la commune." (p.233)

At last, among the set of short stories I did not like, there was a bad connotation toward woman as living in libertinage [ "Le signe, Au Bois, Joseph"] and toward the Christian value of a big family ["une famille" ]. Moreover, the Church is also criticized and made fun of [ "Le Marquis de Fumerol, Les Rois" ]. This edition contains a preface with a dossier.

About the Author
American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

my favourite zane grey book

I have read this book the first time as a teenager and have re-read it many times since then. I love the descriptions of the nature, the mountains, the desert, the horses etc.. I also found the story very captivating. the book came out later as "duane of the mountains" with basically just the name of Milt Dale changed. Milt, the male hero of the book, is not a gun-slinging cowboy, but a man who loves the solitude of the mountains, a life in the woods, shared only with his pets, a tame mountain lion and various other animals. When he meets Helen Rayner and her sister Bo, his whole life changes, and it takes him a while to understand what is going on in himself. I will certainly read it again, and I can recommend it to anybody who does not look for a western full of brutality. (well, there is some shooting and some people are killed, but it is described in a non-drastic way and it is just a necessary part of the story).

A classic western with modern appeal

I have only just started to read Zane Grey novels and I am very excited that I discovered this author. I live in Arizona and have explored many of the settings for his stories and with his detailed descriptions I can easily imagine that I am back in these scenes. In The Man of the Forest he has character development. He has many different characters in this story from the mountain man to the Eastern heiress and her little sister to the Morman cowboys to the Mexican shepherds and sleazy villains. And, his descriptions and development do not end at landscapes and characters but to action as well. It just takes your breath away when the heiress is being chased through the high desert and forest for 3 days in a stage coach and then on horse back. Also, the most amazing description that I can recall ever reading was the grizzly bear hunt. Both of these are "hair raising" darn right adventure. I truly believe that these novels should be resurrected and marketed for today's audience, but I also think that TV westerns like Bonanza and Gunsmoke should return as well. This novel is considered Zane Grey's fifth best novel of the over 55 novels he wrote by the Zane Grey's West Society and was written about 10 years into his career as a writer. I am looking forward to reading first through fourth.

Holds up over time!

I first read this book when I was 12, and absolutely loved it. I was already a horse-riding maniac and adored the physical description of the West as Grey knew it. I thought the love story was also wonderful, there was suspense, and Grey, to me, was an amazing storyteller. I proceeded to read every one of his books, at the rate of about 2 per week. I have since re-read several of my faves, and decades later, this still ranks as one of the best. Unlike the other readers, I highly recommend it for a drowsy Saturday. And I love the price! Free, for my Kindle!
