Under the Yoke is a novel by Ivan Vazov written in 1888. It depicts the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria and is the most famous piece of classic Bulgarian literature. opinion from another Bulgarian

I like so much what the other Bugarian said about "Under the Yoke". It is most probabaly a 7-grade student(13 year-old) because this is the first time when we read the novel in Bulgaria.

I have read the book twice and the first time I read it was when I was 13 and I didn't really understand it...it was just a story about suffering and revival,a story about a determination to overcome opression that i could not really grasp. However, i read it again in highschool and only then could i see how deep and real this novel is, how sincere and important it is. Vazov is the Patriarch of Bulgarian literature and his words are a precious heritage that we all carry in our hearts and souls.

I will buy this book now as a present for my English teacher in the US and I would advise everybody who is Bulgarian to do the same. This book is worth reading and I hope that more people will have access to the the depth of the Bulgarian soul and the endless source of hope and life that has been sustaining our nation throughout the 13 centuries of its existence.

Book fell apart

I bought this book as a present for my son's teacher. When I opened the package I was so exited to hold in my hand something
that I treasured so much. I gently opened the book and to my amazement...the book fell apart.
I have never in my life've seen a quality so low. Very disappointing!

A Treat for a Howells fan

If you haven't read William Dean Howells (and a lot of people haven't) I want to encourage you to give him a try. He reminds me of Trollope and Henry James and others who write "grown up" novels. By that I mean they linger over the quotidian more than they stir things up with sensation. They are more Elinor Dashwood than Marianne Dashwood type writers (maybe Dickens and Scott are in the Marianne school.) Lots of relationship issues, how to make a go of a job, how to get the girl, etc., but all done in a mature way and with the elegant, easy, erudite writing style that marked the literary elite of the 19th Century. And, like Trollope, you might spend a couple of chapters thinking there isn't much here, and then by the end of the book you are stealing time any way you can to get through it. It builds slowly, but it has real substance.

The Delphi edition is great. There are a lot of hard-to-find things here in addition to the famous works (like "The Rise of Silas Lapham" and "The Hazard of New Fortune") I love having all the Howells I could want always at my fingertips, and for the price of a cup of coffee.
