About the Author
Born in 1899, Nevil Shute worked as an engineer before founding his own aircraft company in 1931. During the Second World War he served in the navy, doing secret work for the admiralty and finding time to write several novels. He made his home in Australia, remaining there with his family until his death in 1960.

The art of disciplined writing

Nevil Shute's style will probably not please the modern reader much, and that is unfortunate. His love of detail and the pains he goes to make sure of what he is stating are characteristics that I enjoy in his texts. Sometimes, he goes to an almost ridiculous extent to flesh out the reality of his background, when it probably would not be missed. Yet just as he does this, you can see him entering a truly fictional world in which, whoops, his characters suddenly do resemble real people and his narrative suddenly comes to life. It might be the extra effort Donald Ross goes to get the wireless to work, something banal and silly like that, but we know, almost without realising it that Shute is suddenly expanding a fictional context to include the all too likely possibility of future danger, and we realise just how much care is being taken. The work is not sloppy; it is methodical and I admit, at times a little dry. Yet when Shute's work really fires, it is because of this attention to the right kind of detail.
"An Old Captivity" has long been one of my favourite Shute novels. In a way it's an experimental sort of book: it takes the long wide arc of a journey from Britain to Canada via Iceland and Greenland, as its background. The path of a small seaplane is traced with infinite pains to capture the solitariness and the arduous nature of the voyage. Its three passengers are linked together in interesting and diverse ways. Slowly, against the further background of the Icelandic sagas, the tale emerges and, as usual with Nevil Shute, it is not what we are expecting. Just when the clean, crisp, almost mechanical prose has us thinking one thing, Shute leaps off into a void composed of history and imagination. It's an extremely disciplined piece of writing and I hope you'll enjoy the ride.

Mystic search for Viking and Irish connection to New England

Initially published in 1940 it is a touching story of a pilot, a scientist and his daughter who in the early 1930's are early North Atlantic aviators as they fly from England to Iceland and on to Greenland to search for evidence that the Irish may have accompanied the Vikings in their year 1000 AD colonies. Nevil Shute combines his incredible love of aviation and his admiration of pilots, with the mysticism which later becomes very much of a trademark in many of his books. A sensitive love story ties the present day characters to the ancient Norse sagas. Further underlying the tale is the question of how far west did the early voyagers to Iceland and Greeland actually get. I personally find it fascinating to note that years after Nevil Shute wrote this book, compelling evidence of Viking settlements on the North American continent itself has been found.

A Little More than an Ordinary Plane Trip

Most people today think nothing of getting on airplane, and a few hours later, arriving at their destination half the world away with no more to complain about than poor service by the stewardess. It wasn't always this way, and even today going to some remote locations has at least some difficulties associated with it. This book details the adventures of three very disparate people, an Oxford don, his class conscious daughter, and an independent-minded pilot as they embark on a trip from England to Greenland during the mid-thirties in an attempt by the professor to prove that the Celts came along with the Norsemen during their exploration and colonization period of about AD1000.

Greenland is not a very hospitable place, with few inhabitants, almost no ports, unpredictable and typically highly inclement weather, and ice-locked most of the year. The preparations needed to go there at the time of this novel were extensive, approaching the level of effort of the Scott and Amundsen polar expeditions, though on a much smaller scale. Almost all of this effort falls on the shoulders of the pilot, from purchasing, assembling and testing an appropriate sea-plane to ordering supplies, obtaining the required documents, setting up logistical support bases, and finding and hiring an appropriately skilled photographer, all while working under a time deadline dictated by Greenland's very short summer.

Nevil's description of all of this work and the thought processes of his pilot are vivid, detailed, and highly believable. While progressing in the story line, his characters are richly developed. There is a natural antipathy between the working-man pilot and the daughter, who has led a very sheltered upper-class life, who naturally can't believe the cost and preparation required for the trip, so naturally believes that the pilot is merely out to pad his own pocket. But once they embark on the trip itself, the pilot's unstinting devotion to his work slowly wins her over, and a very predictable attraction starts to form between the two.

This is very typical of Nevil's work, as he was excellent at characterization and defining romantic attractions in a very believable and satisfying manner. Also typical is the fact that there are no bad guys or any high dramatic tension here. Instead his stories revolve around his characters, often very ordinary people dealing with the very mundane realities of life. This is a somewhat slow-moving book, typical of English novels written prior to WWII, but once adjusted to this novel's pace, I had no trouble remaining engrossed in the story.

There are some items here, though, that are not so good. Shute was an avionics engineer, and his knowledge of airplanes is very much on display here, probably a little too much so, with too many details about the plane gone over multiple times. There is a section near the end that digresses violently from the main story, almost a separate story in itself, that I did not think Shute did a proper job of preparing the reader for. The final ending that ties the main story and this other one together reeks of mysticism and was, I felt, unnecessary to completing his character's story arc.

Still, a very likeable read, probably not at the incredibly high level of things like his On the Beach or A Town Like Alice, but worthwhile reading.

An Enchanting Story, Not Just For Girls

Every girl dreams of being a princess. This enchanting story addresses that yearning. It is truly a mystic adventure of a young lady learning to make decisions and discovering who she really is in the process. The decisions that Cecile makes are wonderful examples for girls to follow. And it's not just for girls. My mother and brother enjoyed it as much as I did! Marilyn Churchill writes a story that keeps the reader enthralled until the last page, and her beautiful illustrations bring the story to life. It is clear that this is truly a labor of love and destined to become a children's classic.

Cecile and the Spider Queen

I loved the charming details in both the story and the illustrations. The chapter heading designs are particularly entrancing. Young girls will identify with Cecile's feelings and little Lily's spunk. The funny spider illustrations are even appealing for spider-phobes, as well as the notion of fashion-minded spiders sharing web patterns and lace designs. I also liked the fact that the heroine saved her well-intentioned prince charming. A good read, and I'm looking forward to sequels.

NOT WHAT I HAD EXPECTED......ALTHOUGH MOST VALUABLE AS FOR IMPECCABLE REFERENCES THROUGH LENGTHY EXCERPTS FROM ACTUAL NOVELS BY DICKENS, I FIND LITTLE INTEREST IN REREADING THOSE PASSAGES WHICH I HAVE ABSOLUTELY ADORED WHEN READ FIRST HAND....I'M GLAD THERE WAS SOMEONE LIKE TRUMBLE WHO TOOK SUCH PAINS TO PRODUCE A BOOK AS THIS, BUT AS A LOYAL FAN OF MR. CHARLES DICKENS, I'D RATHER BE LEFT WITH THE ORIGINAL FLAVOUR OF THE ORIGINAL WORKS.

As a child of imagination, Anne takes much joy in life and adapts quickly, thriving in the close-knit farming village. Her talkativeness initially drives the prim, duty-driven Marilla to distraction, although Matthew falls for her charm immediately. Anne says that they are "kindred spirits."

It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can't imagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not for the original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne "confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes of being allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hated carrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, no house that Anne's in will ever be dull." And no book that she's in will be, either. This adapted version of the classic, Anne of Green Gables, introduces younger readers to the irrepressible heroine of L.M. Montgomery's many stories. Grade 5-7-With a full cast and some background music, this radio play version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic hits the high points of the original novel. It is quite abbreviated, so each episode in Anne's orphan-girl-made-good story is afforded just enough time to lay out the bones of the plot. However, Anne's spunky and endearing character shines through scene after scene, as does some of the nostalgic charm of Avonlea's Canadian setting and quaint old Green Gables. All the parts are read very well, with a touching intensity that makes up for some of the brevity of plot episodes. A narrator fills in quite smoothly between the scenes for each event. Two nice features for young listeners make this a useful introduction to audio fiction. There is a pleasant chime played at the end of each side, and at the beginning of each side a line or two from the preceding side is repeated, helping to move listeners smoothly through the break in the action. This entertaining version may help lead youngsters to the original novel. School and public libraries seeking to add abridged novels to their collections or to introduce or entice young readers to longer fiction will want to consider this version.

who woulda thunk

Two years ago I would have bet a bazillion dollars I would never read a "girls" book. But at 71 years of age I found myself in a house full of books only one of which I had not read. I am terrribly addicted to reading so, in desperation, I started "Anne of Green Gables". It is a marvelous book with a main character I wish I could meet every day in real life. Again to feed my addiction I bought the "Anne of Green Gables" series. Each book was a delight and I soon forgot that they were "girls" books. Maud created a character we all need in our life. She turns the mundane magical and believable. Reading them all in nearly a continous setting makes Anne "wearying" to quote Marilla since unbounded child-like wonder is hard to maintain. I wish I had read these books decades ago so Anne could have helped me through some less than happy times.

Great collection

I think it goes without saying that I love the Anne books, so I will keep my review to one strictly of this Kindle edition.

While I am only about half through the first book (and will certainly update my review if it changes), I'm pretty thrilled with this collection. It's exactly as the description claims: it's easy to jump from one book to another using the Table of Contents. Once you reach the desired book, it is easy to jump from chapter to chapter. I'm giving this only four stars, because the editing isn't perfect; I've noticed a couple odd words and phrases. (Example: "Parthian shot" became "Parthian shaft.") Thus far, however, they are minor and have not significantly impacted my enjoyment. And for the price (I paid $0.99), it's certainly not a big deal.

Over all, I highly recommend this collection. As I stated, if my opinion changes as I read further, I will certainly update my review.

Anne on the Kindle!

This is a great compilation of 11 Anne of Green Gables books! I chose this edition after sampling various other less quality versions on Amazon. The eBook is very well formatted and reads like a charm on my Kindle 2. As a long-time Anne of Green Gables reader, having this compilation is great for when I feel like revisiting Anne of Avonlea or Anne's House of Dreams. These are truly wonderful stories and you just get lost in the world of Green Gables thanks to Lucy Maud Montgomery's fantastic use of imagery.

Just get this edition and let Anne take you on a wonderful journey!
