About the Author
Edith Nesbit (1858&ndash1924) was a children's writer whose most famous novels include The Story of the Treasure Seekers, Five Children and It, and The Enchanted Castle.

Teresa Gallagher has performed in many leading roles in both plays and musicals across the country, London s West End, and Broadway. In addition, she is a well-known voice to listeners of BBC Radio Drama. Her work on film includes The Misadventures of Margaret and Mike Leigh s Topsy Turvy. She has read numerous audio books throughout her career, including the Biography of Jane Austen by Elizabeth Jenkins and selections from The Decameron by Boccaccio.

I wish Oswald were real, I honestly do. He's the greatest, so utterly pompous yet compassionate and humane, so three-dimensional, so all-knowing, yet so childishly naive. The Wouldbegoods is hilarious and quite informative. I learned a great deal about British vocabulary--"ripping" is now my most-loved word.

Maybe They Should Try Being Bad.....?

"I do believe we are the worst children who ever lived!" Alice Bastable cries when yet another plan of the 'Wouldbegoods' goes disastrously wrong. Her despair is understandable, in their attempts to perform good deeds the six Bastable children and their two friends wreck havoc across the British countryside. Yet in the end they do manage to do good, quite by accident. Absolutely hilarious.

Banished for the Summer!

6 Bastables and two friends are sent to the country for the summer, and try to do good things. Of course, the best laid plans...But what child can resist a story of children living in a moat house, spending their summer free to explore the English countryside? What great ideas will the children come up with next? The characters are funny and very real. There is trouble around every bend, but a theme of honesty and integrity runs through the story like a breath of fresh country air.

About the Author
Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

"I know too much.... and all the wrong things."

G.K. Chesterton was happy to do some spoofery of the deductive detective genre -- his detectives seemed to depend more on the knowledge of human nature. One good example is Horne Fisher, the star character who solves bizarre little mysteries because he "knows too much... and all the wrong things."

The first story opens with a reknowned book critic stumbling across a dead man with his head bashed on. Fortunately Fisher is fishing nearby, and is able to deduce who killed the poor man, when, and cleverly figures out the best (and most theatrical) way to get results.

In each story, Horne deals with another strange mystery -- the framing of an Irish "prince" freedom fighter, the vanishing of a priceless coin, a man killed off in the Middle East, an eccentric rich man dies during an obsessive fishing trip, another vanishes during an ice skate, a bizarre dispute over an estate, and most shockingly, a statue crushing his own uncle...

Chesterton was a good mystery writer. He could spin up bizarre little crimes (murder, theft, treachery) for a variety of colourful reasons, from the political to purely psychological. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a good example of that, and it shows Chesterton veering into more politically-charged territory than in his other mysteries, with the Irish-English conflict, spies and impending war.

But these mysteries also have Chesterton the philosopher/theologian/thinker. He writes in colourful, poetic prose ("as if the world were steeped in wine rather than blood"), and has brief moments where Horn muses on human nature.

"Patriotism is not the first virtue. Patriotism rots into Prussianism when you pretend it is the first virtue," he remarks at one point, as an example. Through him, Chesterton gives us brief little insights into what he knows too much of -- a worldview remarkably simple, but very insightful.

"The Man Who Knew Too Much" is an odd kind of detective -- instead of the quirky detectives or deep thinkers, Horn is rather melancholy and plaintive, almost tormented by his own knowledge. This comes to a peak in the bittersweet final story, where Horne finds himself in a wretched situation, with shocking results.

"The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a solid collection of detective stories, but underlying the mysteries are Chesterton's deeper looks at human nature. Excellent reading.

Cynical patriot who knows too much...but isn't telling

If you think you're a cynic about politics (or more precisely, about politicians) you've got nothing on GK Chesterton. This is another of his episodic novels in which a series of short stories that stand alone end up making up one single story with the last one bringing all of the threads together and raising them to a climax and resolution.

The eponymous man who knew too much is Horne Fisher. And what he knows is all of the key people of the ruling class in England, the tawdry secrets of their personal lives, and the odd and indirect ways that these deform the laws, policies, and administration of justice in the realm. Hypocrisy and gentlemanly corruption are the air they breathe. He knows that most of what you read in the papers is nonsense. In his own words, he knows "everything that isn't worth knowing."

In these eight stories of mystery and crime, Fisher's peculiar knowledge allows him to discover who committed each crime and why. Often enough the criminal must go unpunished lest worse things follow. Sometimes the victim is in fact more guilty than the criminal. The other main character is an honest but naive reporter, Harold March, whom Fisher meets and befriends in the first story. March plays Dr. Watson to Fisher's Sherlock Holmes in all eight stories. Until the redemptive climax, Fisher is a sort of tragic figure, upright, honest and unwilling to participate in the wrongdoing, but also unwilling, seemingly unable, to expose his family and their plutocratic circle.

I doubt whether England was quite as rotten in 1922 as Chesterton believed. I'm quite sure that America in 2010 is not. But then perhaps that just makes me the man who knows too little.

One way or the other, this is a delightful book and highly recommended.

Similar to the Father Brown books

The Man Who Knew Too Much is a collection of eight short mystery stories which reminded me greatly of Chesterton's Father Brown stories, except these were not quite as good. I dislike mystery stories where the main character solves the mystery with the aid of a clue that the reader did not have access too. That was one of the reasons why I really like Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries, because if you pay close enough attention and think enough, you can come to the correct conclusion yourself before the answer is announced. Unfortunately, Chesterton does not write all of these stories in that way (though a few of the eight are), and it makes them not as much fun to read, though they are still very good.

In terms of content, Chesterton does a fabulous job of bring up moral issues (for example, do we tell the public the truth about murder if it will be harmful to the public?) in these mysteries, and they really make you think. As always, Chesterton has also intersperced the stories with witty yet deep phrases which also make you think, and if you are an underliner you will find many things to underline.

In conclusion, this is a good book, but if I were you, I'd read his Father Brown stories before I read these.

Across from the motel is an old cemetery where miners were buried. It's not the ghosts within the cemetery that will make you run in fear...for those of you faint of heart and fearful of clowns, this is not a delicate story. America's scariest motel is haunted...by hundreds of clowns.

Spending the night in this creepy Motel is definitely a true test of courage, because it's full of clowns. There are clowns tacked onto the doors, shelves of clown dolls starring at you with their beady glass eyes, and collectibles in the lobby that are neatly seated in chairs as if guarding the place from harmful intruders. There are clown paintings on the walls that look at you.

And if you have a second floor room, you can look out from the balcony and see why the motel is so eerily quiet and dark at night. It's the cemetery. The Clown Motel stands right next to Tonopah's old, dusty, unlit cemetery. Closed for over one hundred years, it's packed with the graves of the town's miners who died very unpleasantly.

That should be cause for panic and even more so, if you've ever watched the movie Poltergeist, and you decide to spend a night at this unique lodge. Spend at least a minute or two wondering if, just maybe, part of a cemetery full of graves of men who died horrible deaths once stretched underneath land now occupied by the Clown Motel...

I tell this story with locked doors and windows. I was one of the lucky ones. They are coming. They are coming for me. As the saying goes, you can check out any time you want, but you can't leave. There's a lot more buried there than you might think...

Best ending Definite Jaw Dropper

I just finished this book and the author gives Stephen King a run for his money. I Could not put this book down and the ending was a jaw dropper. I definabley will never look at clowns the same. This book was scary and thriller and left wanting me wanting more. Cant wait for the 2nd book

A true friend is a lovely trip into the past.

I have read a lot of Adeline Sergeant books. They are often thumbnail sketches of the division between the gentry and the lower class. In this story, the heroine rises above all types of adversity and goodness prevails. This is a very old-fashioned read but I love the period language.

About the Author
Henry James was born on April 15, 1843, on Washington Place in New York to the most intellectually remarkable of American families. His father, Henry James Sr., was a brilliant and eccentric religious philosopher; his brother was one of the first great American psychologists and the author of the influential Pragmatism; his sister, Alice, though an invalid for most of her life, was a talented conversationalist, a lively letter writer, and a witty observer of the art and politics of her time.

In search of the proper education for his children, Henry senior sent them to schools in America, France, Germany, and Switzerland. Returning to America, Henry junior lived in Newport, briefly attended Harvard Law School, and in 1864 began contributing stories and book reviews to magazines. Two more trips to Europe led to his final decision to settle there, first in Paris in 1875, then in London next year.

James's first major novel, Roderick Hudson, appeared in 1875, but it was Daisy Miller (1878) that brought him international fame as the chronicler of American expatriates and their European adventures. His novels include The American (1877), Washington Square (1880),Princess Casamassima (1886), and the three late masterpieces, The Wings of the Dove (1902), The Ambassadors (1903) and The Golden Bowl (1904). He also wrote plays, criticism, autobiography, travel books (including The American Scene, 1907) and some of the finest short stories in the English language.

His later works were little read during his lifetime but have since come to be recognized as forerunners of literary modernism. Upon the outbreak of World War I, James threw his energies into war relief work and decided to adopt British citizenship. One month before his death in 1916, he received the Order of Merit from King George V.

A Great Deal, for James lovers and newbies

This is a tremendous book - some of the greatest stories ever written, attractively packaged and reasonably priced. These are not really "short stories", as most of them are longer than 50 pages, and they all require careful attention, but the effort is well worth it. While some are better than others, there is not a weak story in the book.

About the Author
Carolyn Wells, June 18, 1862-March 26, 1942 was an American writer and poet. She was best known for her books of poetry and humor until around 1910 she read one of Anna Katherine Green’s mysteries and took up the genre. Many of her mysteries featured the detective Fleming Stone. She was married to Hadwin Houghton, heir to the Houghton-Mifflin publishing company. She was a collector of poetry by other authors, and, upon her death, she bequeathed her collection of the works of Walt Whitman to the Library of Congress.

WELL-DONE PERIOD PIECE

While the behavior and expressions of love may sound quaint to many younger people today as will some of the stylistic devices, this is, nonetheless, a well-written, interesting murder mystery. What we know at the end of the situation setting portion of the book, is that the young hero, who had been on a vacation trip to Labrador with a couple of friends and a guide, was lost in a heavy snowstorm, had broken his leg in the fall, was closing his eyes peacefully for the final moments of life, and then....cut to his family and friends back in New York. They have been notified of his death and that the body could not be found. Along comes an impressive woman who in seance after seance provides convincing evidence to the bereft father and mother, that she is in touch with their son, on the other side; they speak with him, familiar parts of his clothing known to have been with him on the trip, are presented by his wraith in seances. Father writes a wildly best selling book, detailing his experiences and praising such practitioners to the sky. Then a murder takes place in the friendship group.
I listened to the book using Kindle robot reading. It takes some getting used to, I am sure, for those who have listened to none or only a few books using the various software packages usable on the computer. I found it conveyed the story to me quite adequately, although one should not expect the voice-acting skills one finds in the live, professional actor, productions. These, however, are pretty expensive and probably most would want to borrow them from a library.
For anyone accustomed to reading literature of any sort written before most of our current favorites were born, this should prove an enjoyable experience

Enorme, par son volume d'abord, mais aussi par la complexité captivante de son intrigue. Les 2 premiers tomes constituent la plupart de l'action (qui est souvent à couper le souffle); les 2 derniers développent l'intrique autour du thème de la revanche. Depuis deux mois je le trouve 'irreposable'.

About the Author
Booker T. Washington was an African-American teacher, author, presidential advisor, and civil-rights leader. Born in Virginia in 1856, Washington was of the last generation born into slavery. After emancipation, Washington attended college in Virginia, and gained fame as a result of his 1895 speech about the importance of educating African Americans and his belief that African Americans were capable of great feats through education. Washington s contribution to educational equality was made greater by his influence in the social circles of millionaires and self-starters, and he was the first African American invited to the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Booker T. Washington published five books with the aid of ghost writers, among them his first autobiography The Story of My Life and Work and his bestselling second biography Up from Slavery, which earned him his invite to the White House. Washington was also responsible for founding the National Negro Business League, which has, since 1966, been incorporated into Washington D.C. as the National Business League.

The triumph of the human spirit

Read this book if you are in search of a truly uplifting experience. Booker T. Washington was freed from slavery at the age of 9 by the Lincoln Emancipation Act during the terrible American War between the States. He had led a harsh, deprived life but had one of those great minds & souls that enabled him to overcome his past. Education was the path. He attended college. Working as a janitor to pay for it. His whole life, aided by generous, far seeing white people, this in the Deep South, was devoted to the education of black people. Eventually he founded the famous Tuskegee College in Alabama. His tours of America to raise funds brought him fame, & the funds. Many of his speeches became famous all over America & beyond. This book is full of the determination, energy & love that one man showed to the world in some of the most troubled times America has seen. I hope everyone reads it.

I chose this rating as I found the book to be very thoughtfully written. The author never dwelt on the ills of his past but very skilfully injected it when it was necessary to bring across a point.

Incidentally, my brother, who is from Jamaica, attended this historic institution on a scholarship in the 1970s.

I am proud to share such a connection.

Powerful Life Story of Booker T. Washington

Mr. Washington's story was a great surprise to me. From his slavery to his success, this man shows no bitterness and let nothing deter him from attaining his goals. He acknowledges the role of the white man and the black man in making changes to the education of blacks in the south. What an interesting life he led! His story should be told over and over!

This book is a formal little collection of biographies on the following people:

William and Mary Howitt

It's slow reading, particularly if you don't know anything about these people before and just dive right in. I was hoping they'd be autobiographical and I might get some insight into how people lived, but it's definitely not primary source material. I haven't yet figured out the connection between each person in the book, if there is one, but I haven't finished it yet, as it reads like a dry college textbook and I feel like I should be concentrating and taking notes. Still, what I've read so far has been quite dramatic!

A Charming Christmas Story.

This story was wonderfully complete, an interesting premise with a younger Georgiana learning to believe in Christmas miracles. Of course there is a fantasy aspect to the story, but what better subject to explore with whimsy than the belief in Santa Claus? And I just have to mention that the Darcys really, REALLY, are well connected! I only wish this excellent author would have had the story beta'd for typos and tense. The many printed errors distracted from a sweet Christmas tale.

Interesting Variation But...

This variation was much like a Hallmark Christmas movie. It's predictable and rather cheesy, so don't expect dynamic characters and deep themes. However, I found it to be a rather entertaining little Christmas story and a quick read. Honestly, it was the uniqueness of the plot that made me want to continue reading to find out what happened at the end. There are liberties taken with the characters (specifically Georgiana who is only 8 in this story instead of 16 as she is in the original), but that's more acceptable considering the story's premise. My biggest complaint with this novel is the excessive number of grammatical errors. There are missing or incorrect words, inconsistent verb tenses, and poor punctuation in multiple places throughout the book--almost enough so to make me consider not finishing the story. They made what should have been an easy-read cumbersome and tedious. Additionally, the characters were a bit static, and the plot moved a bit too quickly in some places. The language is stiff and unnatural, reminding me of a more beginner level of writing. It even made me wonder if the author's first language wasn't English. This book held promise but fell short of my expectations simply because there were so many mistakes.

Such a sweet Christmas story

This is a cute quaint Christmas story that was easy to read, though had some areas that could be improved upon. I loved the premise behind this story, though some things were a little hard to accept. I was concerned with the author having made Georgiana 8 y/o, but some of her dialogue was too advanced for that age. Still in the end it was read in the spirit it was written and was enjoyable. I think that other JAFFers would enjoy the story.
