Divine Providence
By kaw711
If you believe in Divine Providence, this is an interesting read. All of Adeline Sargeant's works are inundated with this concept, and if you have an issue with it, you will feel the story so contrived that it would be frustrating. I have read many of her works, as I enjoy her characters and the historical information her novels provide. Some of her characters are somewhat one dimensional, but others are very well developed and complex. Under False Pretences was a good read. Her novel a "Life Sentence" is even better.

a very moving book, so well written.
By Edward H. Southwick
The book is very intricate in the development of the characters. The plots for each is vert divergent, bun in the end there is a very satisfying solution for each. The book was very riveting.

A book for "Tweens"
By Grant18
I didn't know George Eliot wrote children's books although you'd better either read it to your young children or not let them read it until they know the difference between good grammar & pronunciation & literary license. Nice little story though.

Medea, by Euripides

In the centuries since it was first performed, Euripides’s Medea has established itself as one of the most influential of the Greek tragedies. The story of the wronged wife who seeks revenge against her unfaithful husband by murdering their children is lodged securely in the popular imagination, a touchstone for politics, law, and psychoanalysis and the subject of constant retellings and reinterpretations.

This new translation of Medea by classicist Oliver Taplin, originally published as part of the acclaimed third edition of Chicago’s Complete Greek Tragedies, brilliantly replicates the musicality and strength of Euripides’s verse while retaining the play’s dramatic and emotional impact. Taplin has created an edition of Medea that is particularly suited to performance, while not losing any of the power it has long held as an object of reading or study. This edition is poised to become the new standard, and to introduce a new generation of readers to the heights and depths of Greek tragedy.

Review
“Lively. . . . Tragedy's (and comedy's) alternation of speech and song provide the . . . fundamental rhythmic dynamic, and a good translator will use different registers to capture this alternation. Here, Taplin is very successful, and many passages in the odes convey both the intensity of the lyric mode and the contrast with the spoken rhythm that precedes and follows.” (Bryn Mawr Classical Review)

“Taplin’s eminently readable version of this harrowing tragedy justifies his reputation as one of our foremost experts in dramatic criticism, whose pioneering efforts in illuminating ancient stagecraft remain indispensable today.” (Froma Zeitlin, Princeton University)

“Euripides’s influential and provocative Medea continues to be read, performed, adapted, and reinterpreted in multiple contexts across the globe. Taplin’s accessible and performable, yet vivid and poetic translation makes the play available to a modern audience while doing justice to both its complexities and its horrific power.” (Helene P. Foley, Barnard College, Columbia University)

“Taplin translates Medea into clear and contemporary English while reflecting well the different registers and tones that create the subtle texture of Greek tragedy. His version is eminently speakable, but also highly faithful to the original Greek, making it ideal for instructors and readers who want to study closely the specific metaphors and terms that carry the classic themes of this influential drama.” (Donald J. Mastronarde, University of California, Berkeley)

“Taplin’s volume offers the raw bones of a brilliant production.” (Francesca Middleton Times Literary Supplement)

It does the job
By B. Lotfinia
Kwintner's edition, being part of the Bryn Mawr series, will get you through the Greek if you're approaching the text early in your career. Don't expect extensive information about the Medea myth or Attic tragedy or copious literary or cultural notes, since Kwintner focuses on morphology, vocabulary (she does seem fond, however, of pointing out the odd instance of chiasmus). Be aware that there are errors in the text: on at least two occasions there was a superfluous omega with iota-subscript instead of a space between two words. There were also parts in the commentary that my professor disputed, but make of that what you will. In terms of the book's physical construction, the spiral-binding is beyond irritating: I found it impossible to open and close with ease. The paper is also cheap, even by comparison to other entries in the BMC series: in terms of durability, it's somewhere between a newspaper and a photo-copy.

Considering the low price and target audience, these are forgivable faults, but skip this volume and proceed directly to Mastronarde's Cambridge edition if you don't need the linguistic hand-holding.

Find another edition if you can
By S.
Euripides' Medea is essential reading for any Greek student but Kwintner's edition doesn't really do it justice. There are a lot of bizarre typos in the Greek text -- and a beginning Greek student will have a hard enough time with a perfect text, let alone one that's been messed up by the editor. I bought this for a course and shortly afterward switched to the edition by Denys L. Page. Apparently the Cambridge edition is also very worthwhile.

Fine performance enriches Medea for listener
By A Customer
This fine production shows how hard Medea is to stage even in audio. The power is dissipated when Medea screeches her anger. Her quiet is stronger than her loud. Listening to this performance deepens our feeling for this great play.

quick, fun read
By pondscum
This was a best-seller from the early 1900s. It's set in the early days of auto racing, when it was presumably not as preposterous at it would be today for our hero to be simultaneously a top racing driver, a factory manager, and a brilliant engineer. It's fairly predictable that the hero and heroine will fall in love and live happily ever after, but there are a couple plot twists along the way and the whole thing kept my attention.

From the Car Behind is a sequel to this book, but with largely a different cast of characters.

Louis L’Amour brings the Wild West back to life in three unstoppable adventures!

“Mistakes Can Kill You” is the story of Johnny O’Day. Half-dead from pneumonia and on the brink of giving up, he was taken in as a boy and nursed back to health by a young couple. Growing up, Johnny harbored nothing but resentment and jealousy of their biological son, Sam. But now Sam is in big trouble, and it seems that Johnny may be the only person who can come between his half brother and a pair of gunmen.

Ross Haney is “The Rider of Ruby Hills.” At twenty-seven, he’s broke, armed, and ready to settle down. But when a feud breaks out between the owners of two of the biggest spreads in Ruby Hills, it looks like the fair town is on the brink of destruction. Ross was a loner at first, but now he’s got allies and a plan . . .

In the title story, Krag Moran is a rider who becomes involved in a range war among ranchers and nesters. The town is divided, and by the time shots are fired and the body count starts to rise, Krag will have a lot of explaining to do to the wrong people.

EARLY LOUIS L'AMOUR
By Kay's Husband
This book has a trio of past, early writings by Louis L'Amour. Mr. L'Amour who died in June, 1988, at age 80, had written many stories years ago for the pulp western magazines prior to being able to make a living with by his novels. Until his contract with Bantam Books in the late 1950s many of his stories were like these 3 that are included within this book.

The stories consist of a couple of short fiction ones, Mistakes Can Kill You and The Man From Battle Flat. Also included is a larger story, The Rider of the Ruby Hills, that later became the Bantam Books western novel, Where The Long Grass Grows.

Mistakes Can Kill You originally saw print in Exciting Western magazine, November, 1950, under the byline 'Jim Mayo'. The Man From Battle Flat was first printed in Rio Kid Western magazine, January, 1952, under the byline 'Jim Mayo'. Jim Mayo was a fictional character Louis had used in his writings it's interesting he would use this name rather than his own name. The final story in this collection is The Rider of the Ruby Hills, appearing first in West, September, 1949, again under the 'Jim Mayo' byline.

Whether you read Louis L'Amour in these early, rough draft stories, or later after he polished them up for Bantam Books, the stories are well worth the read if for no other reason than to see the growth of a writer. They all make for pretty good reading for anyone enjoying a western in general and a Louis L'Amour western in particular.

Seasoned readers will recall that The Rider of the Ruby Hills was issued by Bantam Books in both mass market paperback and as a hardcover in the Louis L'Amour collection in September, 1986. The book also included 3 other stories: Showdown Trail, A Man Called Trent, and The Trail to Peach Meadow Canyon. All of these writings had different titles when later republished in book form. The new titles were Where The Long Grass Grows, The Tall Stranger, The Mountain Valley War, and Son of a Wanted Man.

The Rider of the Ruby Hills according to Louis was once made into a film entitled The Treasure of the Ruby Hills (1955), starring Zachary Scott, Carole Matthews, Lee Van Clef and Raymond Hatton plus others.

The Trouble with the Truth, by Edna Robinson

Set in the 1930s, this poignant, funny, and utterly original novel tells the story of one lost girl’s struggle for truth, identity, and understanding amidst her family’s nomadic, unconventional lifestyle.

What’s the right way to behave, to think, to feel—if you’re always the new girl? How do you navigate life when you’re continually on the move? Do you lie? How do you even know if you’re lying? What’s the truth anyway?

It’s 1928 and nine-year-old Lucresse Briard is trying to make sense of life and the jumbled, often challenging family it’s handed her: a single art-dealer father who thinks nothing of moving from place to place; her brother, Ben, who succeeds in any situation and seems destined for stardom; and their houseman, Fred, who acts like an old woman. As Lucresse advances through childhood to adolescence, she goes from telling wild lies for attention to desperately seeking the truth of who she is as a sophistication-craving teenager in the 1930s.

Told from Lucresse’s perspective as a grown woman, The Trouble with the Truth transcends its time in the late 1920s and ’30s, and weaves the story we all live of struggling to learn who we are and the truth behind this human journey.

"a really sweet read."

From the Author
Who is Edna Robinson?
Representing a dead author is difficult. Edna Robinson, author of The Trouble with the Truth, was born in 1921 and died in 1990. Her novel, written around 1958-1960, was edited by me, Betsy Robinson (daughter). In anticipation of the launch of the book in February 2015, I went through Edna's papers. Here is the copy of a letter she sent to Tonight Show host Jack Paar, who ruled late-night TV from 1957 to 1962. In attempt to get him to consider some of her comedy bits, she introduces herself:

"My credits are kind of undynamic, unsprinkled with a list of names that would prod any network personality in his right mind to scream, "Get that girl!" They include seventy-eight million commercials for everything from Listerine Tooth Paste on through Phillips Motor Oil; an estimated two thousand ads for same and a small truckful of cosmetics; thirteen weeks of scripts (radio) for The Billie Burke Show; two or three years' editing and rewriting Grand Central Station, a contract show for WPAT, Paterson, New Jersey. (I don't remember much about that except that it was sponsored by a bank and the idea was to explore the beauties of Paterson in dull, little dramatic sketches in between the playing of scratchy records straight from the collection of the president of the bank. As far as he was concerned, only two men had ever composed music in the history of the world--Strauss and Offenbach--and he was determined to educate Patersonites to this fact.) Before my contribution to that effort, I was involved for a couple of years as a continuity writer with SGN in Chicago. And digging back even further to the gentle days of my girlhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, KVOO had a fifteen minute spot devoted daily to "Women's News"--and since nothing much was happening at the time to the women of Tulsa--this is the only way I can figure it out at this late date--I was employed to dig up, or make up the stimulating shows."

About the Author
Edna Robinson (1921–1990) was an author and copywriter, who wrote the famous Oreo cookie lyrics “A kid’ll eat the middle of an Oreo first” and such lines as “Navigators of the world since it was flat.” Her short story, “The Trouble with the Truth,” was first published in the 1959 edition of the New World Writing series and selected as one of the “most exciting and original” stories of its time by the editors. The story has now been expanded into a novel of the same name, edited by her daughter Betsy. For more information, go to BetsyRobinson-writer.com.

A Truly Great Read!!!
By Writer in Alaska
I loved this story and read it all fairly quickly, within three days. Edna Robinson writes with keen insights and a quick wit. I loved all of the characters -- each one so unique and memorable. I especially enjoyed Lucresse's perspective and the way Robinson helps us to share her views -- strange and sad and funny as they are. "People can only tell the truth as they see it," Lucresse's father tells her, "And everyone sees it differently." Edna Robinson encourages us to see the beauty and humor of many different truths, and to savor them all.

Written & lost for decades, this novel belongs on the shelf with CATCHER & MOCKINGBIRD.
By Chip Keyes
This is a fine novel and I mean that in all senses of the term. It is often comic, at times poignant, and never dull. (The manuscript itself has an amazing backstory of being lost & forgotten then resurrected and finally published decades later, but you can find that tale elsewhere. Well worth seeking out, BTW) I want to to talk about the book itself. Although it is an American period piece, set in the late '20s & early '30s, it is vivid-- no dust or cobwebs here. This work lives and breathes clearly today, as good and true as when it was written, its young narrator as clear-eyed as those of Catcher in the Rye & To Kill a Mockingbird. Ms. Robinson presents the world-- and Life-- as seen through the first person perspective of a quirky, intelligent young girl on the verge of adolescence. A time when young people-- if they have confidantes-- are ruthlessly and scrupulously honest with them, and honest about their own fears and shortcomings. We, as readers, become HER confidante. (We have ALL been this young person in one way or another, and it’s a shame so many of us forget how truthful, strong & open we are in those confused years.) For example, we hear about her outrageous youthful lies, why she tells them and why she abandons them. Her extended family is eccentric but loving in its way, and rings true as a real family. Our young narrator lost her mother long ago, and finds her way in the general direction of sex, womanhood & adulthood as best she can, while her family continually relocates. Nothing explicit or violent here. I’m not going to recap the story or theme, far better to read it. It’s suitable for any intelligent reader, from a 12 year old girl to me, a man in his 60s. I think it will entertain andspeak to many readers. Fully disclosure: I met Edna Robinson’s daughter Betsy many years ago, when we were both involved in the off-off Broadway theatre world. We reconnected via Facebook several years ago. She’s a wonderful writer herself (check her work out), who discovered and helped her late mother’s manuscript find its way to the long-delayed publication it deserves. (Betsy edited as well.) To be honest, the story of Betsy & Edna and “The Trouble With the Truth” would make a pretty intriguing book in its own right. But start here Edna's novel, and then move on to Betsy’s work.

Captivating and gorgeously written
By Mags
I loved this book. Captivating and gorgeously written, The Trouble with the Truth recounts a motherless girl’s journey through the Great Depression as new homes and significant relationships shift in and out of her world with little or no warning, and she struggles to find her place while never staying in any one place for very long.

Nine-year-old Lucresse Briard is blessed with uncommonly comfortable means at a time when most have little, thanks to her widowed father’s roving business as an “art-objects-investor-dealer-junkshop-keeper” (a depression-proof endeavor that litters the floors and walls of whatever home they’ve most recently landed in with priceless works of art). Yet, in comparison to those she sees around her, Lucresse is uncommonly uncomfortable. Never attending any one school for more than a few months, she doesn’t have time to ease into her social sets, so she copes with her ever-changing landscapes by reinventing herself—enrapturing the strangers who will briefly serve as her peers with wilder and wilder versions of her life—while her loving but oft-disconnected father attempts to help her adjust to each new school by throwing her a birthday party, regardless of the month.

As Lucresse grows into a teenager, she discards most of her lies and finds herself increasingly intrigued by the truth. With an older brother who acts out his life via scenes from Shakespeare, a father who introduced his children to Chaucer and Tolstoy in lieu of Dr. Seuss and swapped trips to kiddie-lands for the opera, a devoted “house man” who fits nowhere in the world but with their chaotic family and seems happiest when dressing and acting the part of chauffeur, and a maternal aunt whose accounts of Lucresse’s departed mother vary as wildly as she needs to support her latest case of the vapors, the “trouble with the truth” is something Lucresse is largely given free rein to sort out on her own. This quirky family is bound by true warmth, however, as is the book. Emotional truth is weighed no less heavily than factual evidence. Cleverness and creativity are as valued as veracity.

I read The Trouble with the Truth in three sittings, and was disappointed each time I set it aside. It’s a smart, funny, touching book. I enjoyed it from start to finish.

Charming!
By e h e h
Romance with some social criticism, set in New York, with a British heroine and an American hero, an evil sister, some confused parents, and noble acts of self-sacrifice all around, leading up to the inevitable HEA...the struggles of poor working girls in a large department store are well done, the social realism is very good...the heroine is a little bit too fairy-like, and the hero rather bumbling and silly...but a charmingstory, suitable for the beach!

Biography of Albert Ballin

This is a great biography of Albert Ballin. It is nice to be able to read a book about him in English. I only wish it had more family information. I bought the book hoping to learn more about his parents and siblings, and I didn't get any of that information beyond what is available in other biographies of Ballin online.

A good survey
By Rick Cook
This little book takes a look at wood engraving in Europe from its beginnings until it was mostly supplanted by metal engraving and other techniques. It is interesting without being deep and it doesn't deal with the technique itself. Rather it is about the artists and some famous engravings..

Amazon.com Review
"The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth," warns Ecclesiastes 7:4, and so does the novel by Edith Wharton that takes its title from this call to heed. New York at the turn of the century was a time of opulence and frivolity for those who could afford it. But for those who couldn't and yet wanted desperately to keep up with the whirlwind, like Wharton's charming Lily Bart, it was something else altogether: a gilded cage rather than the Gilded Age.

One of Wharton's earliest descriptions of her heroine, in the library of her bachelor friend and sometime suitor Lawrence Selden, indicates that she appears "as though she were a captured dryad subdued to the conventions of the drawing room." Indeed, herein lies Lily's problem. She has, we're told, "been brought up to be ornamental," and yet her spirit is larger than what this ancillary role requires. By today's standards she would be nothing more than a mild rebel, but in the era into which Wharton drops her unmercifully, this tiny spark of character, combined with numerous assaults by vicious society women and bad luck, ultimately renders Lily persona non grata. Her own ambivalence about her position serves to open the door to disaster: several times she is on the verge of "good" marriage and squanders it at the last moment, unwilling to play by the rules of a society that produces, as she calls them, "poor, miserable, marriageable girls.

Lily's rather violent tumble down the social ladder provides a thumbnail sketch of the general injustices of the upper classes (which, incidentally, Wharton never quite manages to condemn entirely, clearly believing that such life is cruel but without alternative). From her start as a beautiful woman at the height of her powers to her sad finale as a recently fired milliner's assistant addicted to sleeping drugs, Lily Bart is heroic, not least for her final admission of her own role in her downfall. "Once--twice--you gave me the chance to escape from my life and I refused it: refused it because I was a coward," she tells Selden as the book draws to a close. All manner of hideous socialite beasts--some of whose treatment by Wharton, such as the token social-climbing Jew, Simon Rosedale, date the book unfortunately--wander through the novel while Lily plummets. As her tale winds down to nothing more than the remnants of social grace and cold hard cash, it's hard not to agree with Lily's own assessment of herself: "I have tried hard--but life is difficult, and I am a very useless person. I can hardly be said to have an independent existence. I was just a screw or a cog in the great machine I called life, and when I dropped out of it I found I was of no use anywhere else." Nevertheless, it's even harder not to believe that she deserved better, which is why The House of Mirth remains so timely and so vital in spite of its crushing end and its unflattering portrait of what life offers up. --Melanie Rehak

From Library Journal
Wharton's account of the ill-fated life of Lily Bart receives a perfunctory treatment in this audio program. It is New York in the early 20th century; Lily loves Lawrence Selden, but he sees her as a fortune hunter, with tragic consequences. The author excels at delineating the ways money, romance, and social standing intertwine in the society of the time. Included is a lengthy introduction by Wharton biographer R.W.B. Lewis that sets the work in the context of the writer's life and career. Casual listeners may consider the preface too long and scholarly, and those coming to the novel for the first time may be put off by learning the outcome and by hearing Lewis's uncertainty about whether it is a masterpiece. Anna Fields handles the narration adequately but strains to create masculine voices and makes most of the women too flighty. As a result, the characters seem more trivial than Wharton intended. Not recommended. Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr.

To my mind, her greatest novel ... beautifully written ... never jaded or perfunctory. The humour sedately delirious. Above all, it is a passionate book NINA BAWDEN

MY FRIEND LILY BART
By Charles Slovenski
I stumbled upon a review of the recent film of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH in the TLS and, in order to have the novel firmly fixed in my mind (that is, before the lush, seductive images of film forever eradicated Wharton's novel from me) I dragged my copy off the shelf for a re-read. It had been 16 years since I last read of Lily Bart and her life, and I didn't realize how much I had missed her. For me, this is one of the great reading experiences, one of a handful that make reading a book the deeply moving and human exchange that it is. Despite the distance of wealth, property, time and manners, Wharton manages to make Lily's world and life palpable to anyone who will listen. The clash of money, morals, personality and circumstance is infinitely developed and played out in front of a never fading natural world. Once again, I was deeply moved by Lily Bart and at the end, felt I had lost someone myself.

A Brilliant Novel Of A Brittle Society And A Tragic Heroine.
By Jana L.Perskie
Edith Wharton's "The House Of Mirth" is a sad, but brilliant commentary on the closed, repressive society of the rich, upper class, New York nobility, at the dawn of the 20th century. It is also the story of the downfall of one woman, who attempts to live by her own rules, with no sponsor and no money of her own. Her parents are dead and she lives with relatives.
Lily Bart is one of society's most eligible women, at the height of her powers, when the novel opens. Though she has little money, she has family connections, good breeding and the hope of coming into an inheritance. Beautiful and very charming, Lily has been brought up to be an ornament, as were most women of her class at that time. She is a gilded bird with a noble heart, but clearly she is not aware of the restrictions of her cage. Part of Lily's tragedy is that she does have character, spirit, and a conscience. However, she does not know how to align these attributes, with her ornamental avocation, and her ambitions to marry a wealthy man of good birth.
As expected, Lily is popular with both bachelors and married men. Most of the bachelors propose marriage at on time or another. The only man she has real affection for is her dear friend, Lawrence Seldon, a barrister, whose lack of income makes him entirely unsuitable as a husband. Lily had developed a gambling habit to support her lifestyle, and supplement her allowance. An unfortunate losing streak has put her into debt. In her naivete, she forms an unsavory business alliance with a married man. Later, she is unjustly accused of having an affair with him and their business arrangement also come to light.
Her family cuts her off without a penny. Society friends and connections reject their former darling, trying to extricate themselves from any repercussions Lily's indiscreet behavior may have on their reputations. Former friends turn vicious. The irony is that Lily has never committed any of the sins she is accused of. Several of her friends have, and frequently...but their sins are committed with the utmost discretion. Lily's crime is indiscretion. Her beaus disappear, as do her marriage prospects. The hypocrisy of her class becomes more apparent to her, as she searches for a means to survive, with all the familiar doors closed in her face.
Lily seeks employment as a seamstress in the New York City slums, and lives there also, in a humble room with no refinements. Having no formal training and no real ambition, (her ambivalence about work is obvious), she sinks into deep depression and begins to decline. Laudanum helps her to sleep, and she becomes dependent on the drug.
Lily's descent, from society's beautiful darling to a disheveled, desperate woman living in a shabby hotel room, addicted to drugs, is disturbing reading, to say the least. Her decline seems inevitable, especially after we read of her many poor and self-destructive decisions. She seems to sabotage herself. However, Lily Bart is ultimately the victim of a cruel society that sacrifices anyone who does not conform to its expectations.
After reading "House Of Mirth," for the first time several years ago, Lily's character has remained clear in my mind. I think of her from time to time with great poignance and a sense of personal loss.

"A handsome girl who flirted with a married man was merely assumed to be pressing...her opportunities."
By Mary Whipple
Published in 1905, The House of Mirth offers a blistering social commentary on the lifestyles and behavior of super-rich society. Having grown up in this society, Wharton evaluates it here as an insider, and her trenchant observations give this early novel a liveliness and verisimilitude not characteristic of "aristocratic" novels written by outsiders. Set at a time in which the old, moneyed aristocracy was being forced to admit newcomers who had made their recent fortunes through industry, the novel shows moneyed society in flux, the old guard ensuring their exclusivity against parvenus who are not the "right type," at the same time that their sons and daughters were often securing large fortunes through marriage into some of these new families.

Lily Bart, a beautiful young woman of good family whose father lost everything when she was only nineteen, is left dependent on wealthy relatives in this society until she can charm a financially secure suitor into marriage. At age twenty-nine, she is no longer a debutante, and the pressure is mounting for her to marry, though she lacks the unlimited financial resources of social rivals. Still, her wit and charm make her a delightful companion, and she is never at a loss for suitors. Intelligent enough to want a real marriage and not just a merger between families, she has resisted making a commitment to date, though the clock is ticking.

As Lily tries to negotiate a good marriage and future for herself, she is aware that the competition is fierce. Women "friends" pounce on the latest gossip and spread rumors to discredit rivals, and Lily's reputation is tainted with hints of impropriety. Her opportunities for a good marriage begin to dwindle, and when her aunt, Mrs. Peniston, dies and leaves her a bequest that covers only her debts, Lily is no longer able to compete in the society so attractive to her and begins her downward spiral.

Wharton creates a complete picture of turn-of-the-century New York society and its "important" people--their lack of scruples, their opportunism, their manipulations, and their smug self-importance, characteristics one may also see in Lily when she is part of this society, though there is a limit on how far she will stoop. But Wharton also shows how quickly a woman may become an outcast when the money runs out and she is thrown on her own resources without any training for any other kind of life. A well-developed melodrama filled with revealing details, this novel established Wharton's reputation as a novelist/commentator on the manners and morals of high society and those who would participate in it. n Mary Whipple
