Mr. Devereux Bayne's experiences
By Richard Chappell
This wonderful story was published in 6 editions of the Saturday Evening Post beginning Jan.12, 1918 as a serial novel.

The tale is about a 30-year-old man, Devereux Bayne, who is staying at a hotel in New York City. He will be leaving for Bordeaux the next morning. He plans on helping France in their war with the Germans prior to WWI by driving an ambulance. Mr. Bayne quickly gets caught up in some mysterious circumstances with a burglar, a beautiful young lady, smuggled papers in code and a menacing stranger.

I love the line in the book when Mr. Bayne sees the beautiful young lady, Esme Falconer, for the first time. He thinks to himself, "Well, all clouds have silver linings; some have golden ones with rainbow edges."

"The Firefly of France" reminds me of John Buchan's "The 39 Steps". Both protagonists are pulled into events innocently, but manage to triumph against the odds. Ms. Angellotti certainly manages to tell a fantastic story.

Quaint, old fashioned and probably a "penny dreadful", but nonetheless a racing tale with twists and turns. I enjoyed it (but won't remember it for any length of time.)

Twisted but fun
By Frankie T. Allen, Jr.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that likes a story with more twists and turns than a tornado on a roller coaster. From beginning to end there is no real clue how the story is going to end. While the style of the writing could be confusing at times, it was more like listening to several people sitting around, each telling their part of a bigger story. Strange, but effective.

Early equivalent of Google Zeigeist, topics of conversation
By Kindle Customer
Ashton chronologically collected the topics of interest throughout the time period, briefly summarizing each. The topics range from important historical or social events such as Victoria's coronation, early political conflicts between her and the Government, and the results of the Census, to crimes and misdemeanors among the aristocracy, especially getting drunk and running around committing vandalism or driving (carriages) too quickly and endangering the public, to items that today we'd call gossip and urban legends, such as stories of Spring-Heeled Jack, social scandals, and "the Boy Jones," a young man who repeatedly broke into Buckingham Palace to eavesdrop.

The style is very readable, so this would be valuable to anybody curious about the period as well as to history researchers.

Spiritualism and Charlatanism in Edwardian England
By Dharma
Mr Henry Rochester is an honest and hororable landowner in rural England. One evening he comes upon a young boy who is meditating on a hillside. On a whim, he endows the boy with 500 pounds, and warns him not to fail. Seven years later the boys has become Mr. Bertrand Saton, a mystical adventurer, adopted son of the Comtesse Rachael, and ravisher of female London. The two become enemies, with several women at stake in the contest. Henry's wife, Lady Mary; his ward Lois, and his great love Pauline.

In the early part of the 20th century, spiritism, and spiritualism were popular fads among the social and academic elite in England. Along with them came a plague of frauds, fakes, and blackmailers. This novel describes the connections between the two. Somewhat credulous about the "new science" of parapsychology, but also clear-eyed about it's criminal companion.

Amazon.com Review
A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deep praise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. The recent discovery of the first half of Twain's manuscript, long thought lost, made front-page news. And this unprecedented edition, which contains for the first time omitted episodes and other variations present in the first half of the handwritten manuscript, as well as facsimile reproductions of thirty manuscript pages, is indispensable to a full understanding of the novel. The changes, deletions, and additions made in the first half of the manuscript indicate that Mark Twain frequently checked his impulse to write an even darker, more confrontational book than the one he finally published.

From Publishers Weekly
Considered the first great American novel, part of Finn's charm is the wisdom and sobering social criticism deftly lurking amongst the seemingly innocent observations of the uneducated Huck and the even-less-educated escaped slave, Jim. William Dufris's voice, unpretentious and disarming, like the book's main characters, seems the perfect armature on which to hang this literary strategy. Although he does an expert job with the entire cast, Dufris's delivery of Jim's dialogue is his crowning achievement. Out of context, Dufris's Jim might sound mocking and racist, due to his expert delivery of Twain's regional vernacular. Ignorance and intelligence, however, are not mutually exclusive, and taken as a whole, Jim's mind and heart come shining through, allowing the listener to reflect on their own assumptions. Tantor Media includes the entire text as a digital e-book on the final CD, a wise and thoughtful move in a market with swift and changing currents.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up-The St. Charles Players superbly present the essence of Mark Twain's 1884 classic in this Radio Theatre rendition. With an 18-person cast, they retell the story in a variety of voices, using many of the author's original words as well as adding their own narrative and conversation. This audio version allows youngsters to learn of Huckleberry's trip down the Mississippi on a raft in the company of the (allegedly) runaway slave Jim without bogging them down with hard to understand dialect or offensive words. The style is reminiscent of the Golden Years of Radio drama, with original music and sound effects accompanying the dramatic telling. The aural quality is good, with clear enunciation. Although the action follows the book commendably and includes all the events of major importance, this cannot be used as a read-along version. This is not a drawback, but rather a means of enticing younger students to become acquainted with Twain's work. It would appeal to teachers or librarians who are looking for a lively way to introduce the classics. For older students, also consider Trafalgar Square's three-hour The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Sept. 2000, p. 84).-Joanne K. Hammond, Chambersburg Area Middle School, PA

A controversial masterpiece
By JLind555
Okay, we all know the plot, so there's no sense in rehashing it; but this book has generated a great deal of heat and very little light lately, it's been banned in some school districts and attacked as racist garbage, so this review will address the question: Is "Huckleberry Finn", in fact, a racist book?

The charge of racism stems from the liberal use of the N word in describing Jim. Some black parents and students have charged that the book is humiliating and demeaning to African-Americans and therefore is unfit to be taught in school. If there has been a racist backlash in the classroom, I think it is the fault of the readers rather than the book.

"Huckleberry Finn" is set in Missouri in the 1830's and it is true to its time. The narrator is a 13 year old, semi-literate boy who refers to blacks by the N-word because he has never heard them called anything else. He's been brought up to see blacks as slaves, as property, as something less than human. He gets to know Jim on their flight to freedom (Jim escaping slavery and Huck escaping his drunken, abusive father), and is transformed. Huck realizes that Jim is just as human as he is, a loving father who misses his children, a warm, sensitive, generous, compassionate individual. Huck's epiphany arrives when he has to make a decision whether or not to rescue Jim when he is captured and held for return to slavery. In the culture he was born into, stealing a slave is the lowest of crimes and the perpetrator is condemned to eternal damnation. By his decision to risk hell to save Jim, he saves his own soul. Huck has risen above his upbringing to see Jim as a friend, a man, and a fellow human being.

Another charge of racism is based on Twain's supposed stereotyping of Jim. As portrayed by Twain, Jim is hardly the ignorant, shuffling Uncle Tom that was so prevalent in "Gone With the Wind" (a book that abundantly deserves the charge of racism). Jim may be uneducated, but he is nobody's fool; and his dignity and nobility in the face of adversity is evident throughout the book.

So -- is "Huckleberry Finn" a racist book? No. It's of its time and for its time and ours as well, portraying a black man with sensitivity, dignity, and sympathy. If shallow, ignorant readers see Jim as a caricature and an object of derision, that's their problem. Hopefully they may mature enough in their lifetime to appreciate this book as one of the greatest classics of American literature.

And for those who might be wondering -- this reviewer is black.

Mark Twain's 1885 novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," has had a long history, during which it has been and still is both reviled and celebrated. Essentially the story of the picaresque travels and adventures of a young Missouri boy and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, in 1840's America. Taking cues from books like "Don Quixote" and Jonathan Swift's works, and a fraught relationship to Sir Walter Scott's historical romances and those of his protege, James Fenimore Cooper, Twain constructs a masterful first person narrative, through the eyes of 14 year old Huckleberry and a profound and hilarious satire on American culture.
"Huckleberry Finn" begins in tension - Huckleberry's fortune and wardship with the well-meaning widow Douglas has him in a bind. The widow wants to 'sivilize' him, taking him out of the happy go lucky, easy going lifestyle he loves, while his fortune of six thousand dollars has him living in perpetual anxiety of his father, a violent drunkard whose absence only makes Huck more anxious about his return. When Huck's pap does return, sure enough, Huck is remanded, more or less, to Pap's custody, and kept prisoner in a secluded cabin. Though he is no longer being 'sivilized,' his time with Pap becomes more and more tense and lonely, driving Huck to stage his own death and run away from Pap and from civilization. Early in his escape, on a small island in the Mississippi River, he meets Jim, a slave from his town of St. Petersburg, who has run away, planning to raise money in the north to buy his family out of slavery. Together, Jim and Huck form a friendship that will take them up and down and all around the Mississippi River.
"Huckleberry Finn" deals with a great many social issues, and none more interestingly than with conventional morality. With Huck, he effectively creates an outside position from which to view American culture as he sees it, with all of its pretentions and faults. Huck doesn't put much stock in widow Douglass' or Miss Watson's strictly defined notions of religion or morality - throughout the novel, we see him in constant conflict with himself over the fine line between what is considered right and wrong, and what is accepted as such. Huck's inner negotiations with prayer and morality, good and evil, are at the heart of the novel. His post-Emersonian, proto-Nietzschean manner of dealing with himself and his relationship to society is fascinating and compelling. His relationship with the runaway slave Jim, of course, is also a focal point of the novel - the ways in which Jim and Huck depend on and care for each other is both moving and of course, socially and politically suggestive and significant, especially in the historical context of the novel, both the setting, prior to the Civil War, and its published era, at the tail end of Reconstruction. Those who would be offended by racial epithets in common parlance during this time period would be advised to take historical context into account before railing against the novel's racial politics - if one gets unduly caught up in nitpicking such things, one falls into the trap of the satire, become a target in the process.
As satire or black comedy, "Huckleberry Finn" has at every moment the ability to make us laugh out loud at ourselves and at the situations in the novel - from the fraudulent actions of the King and the Duke, to Tom Sawyer's needlessly elaborate scheme to free Jim from slavery, to well-born cultured families feuding, to all the cross-dressing that goes on in the novel (and there is a lot of it!). Again, though, as black comedy, we may often catch ourselves laughing, then wondering, hey, that isn't very funny - this is the brilliance of Twain's artistic achievement; to make us laugh while looking critically at ourselves. A book that is uniquely American, Twain's humour, wit, and style contribute to give us a look at both Antebellum and post-Reconstruction America through the eyes of innocence and experience, to see how far the nation had come since the days of Washington, and how far it still had (and has) to go.
This 1998 Norton Critical Third edition of "Huckleberry Finn" is truly amazing. It restores the entire text from the manuscript, including among other things, the "Raftsman's episode" and all of the original illustrations. The supplementary materials in this edition are top-shelf also, with excerpts covering the controversy surrounding the novel, from its publication to the present. The critical selections are excellent as well, especially the incisive and yet startlingly personal essays by T.S. Eliot and Toni Morrison. This is probably the best current edition out there of this tremendous, and tremendously complicated American classic.

Twain at his best!
By Dennis Phillips
Back during my school days this was still not a book that was considered to be politically incorrect and so I was supposed to read it. As was far too often the case, I got by on little more than watching the movie version and never bothered to read this masterpiece. A few months ago I picked up a copy to put in my library for my grandson to use when he got old enough to go to school. Unfortunately this has been classified as a children's book and so I had little intention of reading it when I bought it.

After discussing a book about President Grant and Mark Twain with a friend I decided that I should read this book and I soon found out just how much of an adventure I had been missing. Twain's well deserved reputation as a storyteller is on clear display in this book from cover to cover. The reader is drawn into the lives of the characters to the point of being really disturbed when something bad happens to them. Sure, they steal and they lie but you will love them in spite of everything.

The story basically follows the adventures of young Huckleberry Finn and a runaway slave named Jim. Finn is trying to escape has father and the efforts of the townspeople to civilize him while Jim is trying to escape slavery. More to the point, Jim is trying to escape being sold down the river, which was always a worry for slaves in the upper south.

There is a strong moral point to this book as Huck slowly learns to love Jim as a friend and not think of his skin color. Early on Huck is worried about helping a runaway slave and isn't sure what to do. Having been raised in Missouri, Huck has been taught that helping a slave run away is one of the worst sins imaginable and that African-Americans are pretty much worthless except as slaves. It takes a while for the truth to come to Huck but he finds that he is determined to help his friend get his freedom, no matter what. Huck ends up risking his own life to do just that.

This book is a pure joy to read and I suggest you read it without looking for a political agenda. Just let the story flow and enjoy each word. The dialects used may slow you down a bit at first but they add so much to the flow of the book that they are quite indispensable. This is a wonderful story, full of youthful innocence and backwoods charm. Just one little warning though, once you start reading you won't be able to put this book down.

A Great Adventure of Discovery
By lovetoread
What a fun book. If you enjoy books with twists, turns, mystery and a sense of adventure, this could be a good choice for you. An everyday sort of fellow is in London for a business venture, which has fallen apart. Mr. Jones finds himself nearly broke ---- no cash to pay his hotel, much less the money for a return sea voyage home. As he sits and muses his fate, a chance encounter with a very familiar stranger, changes everything.

Now Mr. Jones is in for the time of his life. This book goes to the core of who we are as individuals and how fragile that tie can become. Written in the early 1900's, this book stands the test of time. Join Mr. Jones on his quest and enjoy Mr. Stacpoole's well crafted novel.

Deeper than a Prince and a Pauper
By MGNAJJAR
This novel is much more than an entertaining story of contrasting people going through all the reversals due to trading places and to playing the game of mistaken identity.
Not only "more" but also "deeper", for the author (who could have exploited his fantastic premise in an unlimited number of continuously divulged old secrets and embarrassing situations in an endless number of enjoyable pages, along with a more developed love story between Jones and the sweet wife of his lookalike) meant to show us the different aptitudes due to different attitudes dictated by our different altitudes in social life.
If I were to give this novel a shorter and more relevant title I would name it: Phobia. And I would give it a descriptor or a motto that says: Tell me what you fear, I tell you who you are.
The whole issue comes out of the Lord's note saying: Squeeze it IF YOU CAN.
His replacement, Mr. Jones who, thanks to his humble condition and his continuous struggle, is used to squeeze life and its challenges, eventually... CAN.
What destroys a Lord, is finally destroyed by a striving almost desperate standard citizen, less fearful of life.
This novel may need few modifications to underline its conceptual value, but it is to be read with great pleasure and utmost respect.

Great Mystery and Adventure
By hereswhatithink
4.5 Stars

This is a wonderful story about a penniless American man who accidently meets his double in a crowded Hotel lounge. His lookalike "liquors him up" and the next thing he knows he is waking up in a posh bedroom and being called the Earl of Rochester.

At first he thinks its a practical joke and he plays along. But when the morning newspaper arrives, it all becomes clear: 'Mr Jones, the American' (the real Mr. Rochester) has commited suicide...

You have to love Vincent Jones. A down to earth, honest, plucky businessman, he sorts out the messes Mr. Rochester left behind him one by one, some with truly funny climaxes. All could have carried on smoothly but then the new Mr Rochester meets the lovely woman who he is "married" to and falls in love...

What follows is a confession, a lunatic asylum and a great escape.

So this was really good. There is no part of the story that lagged at all and I really felt invested in the characters. I'll definitely be checking out more books by this author.

"[...]mentor's analogies and his own. A few words remain to be said about Boileau's Discourse of Satires Arraigning Persons by Name, which so far as I know appeared with all early printings of Harte's Essay. The Discourse was first published in 1668, with the separately printed edition of Boileau's ninth satire; in the same year it was included in a collected edition of the satires. It was occasioned, evidently, by a critic's complaint that the modern satirist, departing from ancient practice, "offers insults to individuals."[24][...]".

Pope lite, and not at all bad
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
"Rules, and Truth, and Order, Dunces strike;
Of Arts, and Virtues, enemies alike.
... Ultimately, then, Harte seemed aware that the dunces pose a colossal threat, a threat which warrants Pope's numerous echoes of Paradise Lost. Harte's Essay, in fact, contains several echoes of the same poem. Though, like most of Pope's, these Miltonic echoes are given a comic turn which indicates a wide gap between the real satanic host and its London auxiliary, there is little doubt that Harte grasped the underlying seriousness of his mentor's analogies and his own."

Like Blackmore's Essay upon Wit, this comes to Kindle via the Augustan Reprint Society. It is an essay in verse, by a hanger-on of Pope's, with a translation of the French poet Boileau's defense of the use of proper names in satire, which the editor tenuously suggests may be Pope's own veiled self-defense (although, oddly enough, he does not use the term "sock puppet").

The poem, which I call "Pope lite," is actually very good, especially if you have a taste for the heoic couplet:

The charms of Parody, like those of Wit,
If well contrasted, never fail to hit;
One half in light, and one in darkness drest,
(For contraries oppos'd still shine the best.)
When a cold Page half breaks the Writer's heart,
By this it warms, and brightens into Art.

"Foe to the Learn'd, the Virtuous, and the Sage,
A Pimp in Youth, an Atheist in old Age:
Now plung'd in Bawdry and substantial Lyes,
Now dab'ling in ungodly Theories;
But so, as Swallows skim the pleasing flood,
Grows giddy, but ne'er drinks to do him good:
Alike resolv'd to flatter, or to cheat,
Nay worship Onions, if they cry, come eat:

Yet these love Verse, as Croaking comforts Frogs,
And Mire and Ordure are the Heav'n of Hogs.

Some write for Glory, but the Phantom fades;
Some write as Party, or as Spleen invades;
A third, because his Father was well read,
And Murd'rer-like, calls Blushes from the dead.
Yet all for Morals and for Arts contend----
They want'em both, who never prais'd a Friend.
More ill, than dull; For pure stupidity
Was ne'er a crime in honest Banks, or me."

I simply must regale the reader with a very apt excerpt from the "Boileau":

"So true it is that the right of blaming bad Authors, is an ancient Right, pass'd into a Custom, among all the Satirists, and allow'd in all ages....But they who are so angry at the Critics, how comes it that they are so merciful to bad Authors? I see what it is that troubles them; they have no mind to be undeceiv'd. It vexes them to have seriously admir'd those Works, which my Satires have expos'd to universal Contempt; and to see themselves condemn'd, to forget in their old Age, those Verses which they got by heart in their Youth, as Master-pieces of Wit. Truly I am sorry for 'em, but where's the help? Can they expect, that to comply with their particular Taste, we should renounce common Sense? applaud indifferently all the Impertinencies which a Coxcomb shall think fit to throw upon paper? and instead of condemning bad Poets (as they did in certain Countries) to lick out their Writings with their own Tongue, shall Books become for the future inviolable Sanctuaries, where all Blockheads shall be made free Denizens, not to be touch'd without Profanation? I could say much more on this subject; but as I have already treated it in my ninth Satire, I shall thither refer the Reader."

About the Author
A. J. Glinski was Poland's master folklore writer, and his nation's equivalent of the Brothers Grimm. He spent many years in the mid-nineteenth century travelling all over his nation’s lands, listening to and writing down the stories as told to him by the ordinary folk. In this manner, he captured Polish folklore as it truly was—the way that the peasants would tell their children as part of a wide-ranging oral tradition.

Enchanting tales - book quality lacking
By TBB
The stories are enchanting, but the quality of the book(let) was disappointing. It's a very thin booklet, just 30 pages, and stapled rather than bound. The print is very small, which is not particularly conducive to reading to grandchildren. Additionally, the first letter of each fairy tale is missing - I assume there was once a large, elaborate initial letter that was somehow not carried over into the newer version.

A plug nickel causes lame boy to flee to the country
By Janice aboard Seaweed
I downloaded this book because the author was listed (and recommended) in the back of a Horatio Alger book. On checking I see he wrote Toby Tyler (Circus book) and then went through other offerings to see what looked interesting. This one, with a woman in the title seemed like it might be okay

It's more than okay.

The premise is a young boy of 11, with a lame leg (handicapped) is a newsboy in New York. One of his fellow newsies spots an advertisement looking for Seth with directions to appear in a lawyer's office. Seth cannot imagine why he's wanted. Then he looks through his pocket of change and realizes a lead nickel is gone.

Spoilers follow:

He's passed bad money and now the cops are after him!! That's the why, so he undertakes to leave the city. Friends help him get on a ferry to leave and advise him to find a spot in the country.

Seth flees, with a small white puppy he loves above all else.
Disappointment follows -- folks in the country call him a tramp!

Finally he finds a home and spot with Aunt Hannah and her niece Gladys. Snip (the white dog) loves the country, chasing butterflies and more. Seth however is out of place and scared of a big cow.

He's troubled by his conscience. Should he tell about being wanted by the lawyers for passing that bad nickel and be thrown out of the nicest home he's ever had or not? Aunt Hannah says prayers before every meal.

The cow with long horns provides milk. (I'm not country but that seemed wrong!)

There is danger (fire!) and Seth saves the day. Finally a newspaper article sets in motion the end of the book.

I'm glad I read it and look forward to reading other James Otis books.

This was a very nice book. I've enjoyed several of Otis's books
By Amy
This was a very nice book. I've enjoyed several of Otis's books, and this is no exception. It is a lot shorter than a lot of his books. It's not quite a short story, but it's a quick read. I think that most children about ages 9 or 10 would enjoy it, but it's a nice book for adults, too.

The Satyricon, by Petronius Arbiter

Satire has been a celebrated facet of literature long before The Onion and Saturday Night Live. “The Satyricon,” which translates to “The Book of Satyrlike Adventures”, is dated to the first century AD and is one of two extensive examples of Roman novels. “The Satyricon” is very distinct from its Roman brother “The Metamorphoses”; the portions of the text that have surviving portions of the text focuses on the misadventures of the narrator’s various attempts to keep the attentions of his easily distracted young lover.

“The Satyricon” is one of Western civilization’s original bestsellers; it has been repeatedly copied throughout the Middle Ages and translated into countless languages. While scholars continue to argue about the date of its’ publication and the incomplete collection of writing, there is no doubt that “The Satyricon” is one of the most historically significant works of literature we are lucky enough to possess.

My favorite Latin classic
By baikberuang
Robert Fitzgearld's 1957 translation of this satyrical Roman tale remains, in my opinion, the best. It is fully translated into readable modern English (many of the earlier translations leave the more scandalous passages in Latin to avoid corrupting the young or offending the less educated) and printed in a beautiful, well constructed leather bound copy. For those unacquainted with this ribald story or only familar with Fellini's film version I would offer a word of warning: it is only for the open minded and contains detailed descriptions of homosexual behavior, including relationships that would violate statuatory rape laws today. It was intended to be shocking even to Romans of Nero's time, and is still so today.

crimes against humor for a literary suicide
By flapping in traumatized laughter puddle
The Heritage Club has an interest in the original Latin Satyricon by Titus Petronius Arbiter, but the basic translation produced in 1694 by William Barnaby based on a French translation by Nodot that claimed a text had been found in 1688 was revised for The Heritage Press by Gilbert Bagnini, who was born in Rome in 1900 and became professor of classics at the University of Toronto in 1945. The monthly Sandglass of The Heritage Club (Number 11:34) claims the 1708 revision by Barnaby's "Augustan translators were true descendants of Petronius's characters, and their version of the Satyricon is the closest in spirit of all that we have seen."

Sandglass reports on the suicide of Petronius when Nero was going to have him arrested. The introduction by Bagnini stresses how an attitude of superiority about everything was like an infection of the high and low that trickled down in both directions. According to Sandglass:

What Petronius did,
without knowing that
he was doing it, was
to invent a special
kind of fictional
product: to wit,
the picaresque novel.

The term derives from
the Spanish picaro,
or rogue,
though the rogue
factor has become
heavily diluted over
the centuries.

Fans of the opera Herbert Von Karajan - His Legacy for Home Video - Mozart - Don Giovanni might think of Don Juan as the kind of character who assumes that having too much fun will continue in hell if he goes for dinner there. This plot is mainly remembered for a dinner.

A lovely start
By P. Creeden
This short read packs a punch. If you've ever wanted to learn more about the armor of God and why it's necessary and how it all works, you'd do well to pick up this little book. Stormie's down-to-earth writing style and use of everyday life bring the scriptures to light in an understandable way. I also like how she gives extra scripture to allow the reader to study further in depth than the little booklet allows. A lovely way to start putting on the armor of God and making it a regular practice!

Be A Prayer Warrior
By Rosette
The author provides simple, clear explanations of the components of the "Armor of God", why each component is important, and how to "put them on". Ample Biblical references are provided. The helpful thought questions at the end of each chapter help you think deeper into each topic, and the "Get Connected" web links are a nice encouraging plus to link you with the author and other prayer warriors.
