About the Author
A Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Willa Cather s work was profoundly influenced by her upbringing in rural Nebraska. During her young adulthood Cather proved herself intelligent and capable, initially training for a career as a medical doctor, but discovered a love of, and talent for, writing while attending the University of Nebraska. Following graduation, Cather worked as a journalist for several women s magazines before becoming a high school teacher; an opportunity work as an editor at McClure s provided Cather with her first chance to publish as the magazine serialized her first novel, Alexander s Bridge, to critical acclaim. This was soon followed by works that have since become best-loved American classics, including My ?ntonia, The Song of the Lark, and her Pulitzer-Prize winner, One of Ours. Cather died in 1947 at the age of 73.

"My Antonia" a true classic
By michael a. draper
This is a classic story that describes the life of a family of farmers moving to Nebraska to begin a new life. Young Jim Burden narrates the story. He's on the same train as the Shimerda family and is coming to life with his grandparents after the death of his parents.

In the story we learn of the difficulties the Shimerda's have, living in an area where almost no one speaks the language. The only person speaking a close resemblance of their language takes advantage of them.

Antonia is a teenager and yet seems to have the common sense that helps the family from many difficult situations. She and Jim build a relationship that lasts throughout the novel.

The elements that help classify this as a classic include the descriptions of life in rural Nebraska, the treatment that some immigrant farmers receive and the descriptions of the land, family relationships and how two teenagers can overcome obstacles and become lifelong friends.

This is my second reading of the book. The first reading was when I was a teenager, like the main characters. Reading it again as an adult was interesting and a nice experience.

I loved the book
By Suzanne Jones
I loved the book! I loved the characters but as much loved Jim's description of the Nebraska landscape with which he had such a connection. I loved the importance it gave to friendships and that they last through time and life changes. I highly recommend the book to anyone who values the simple things of life and sees their value. I loved reading it on my kindle.

'the closest, realest face'
By Stephen Grenier
"Her warm, sweet face, her kind arms, and the true heart in her; she was, oh, she was still my Antonia!" These are the words of narrator Jim Burden, a few years younger than his childhood friend, as they reconnect before he moves on with his college studies.

Willa Cather weaves an engaging story of numerous characters. She saves her best for Antonia. This may be Cather's finest work, written masterfully in describing the Nebraska settlers in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Antonia has great self-confidence, strength, love of neighbor, and faithful friendship. She and all the settlers have to endure hardships which Cather fully develops.

Some years later Jim returns for a visit. They quickly re-establish their deep friendship. Antonia says, "Ain't it wonderful, Jim, how much people can mean to each other?" Upon leaving, he writes, 'We reached the edge of the field, where our ways parted. I took her hands and held them against my breast, feeling once more how strong and warm and good they were, those brown hands, and remembering how many kind things they had done for me. I held them now a long while, over my heart. About us it was growing darker and darker, and I had to look hard to see her face, which I meant always to carry with me; the closest, realest face, under all the shadows of women's faces, at the very bottom of my memory."

He reflects later, "Some memories are realities, and are better than anything that can ever happen to one again."

His final visit to her takes place when she has 'ten or eleven' healthy, happy children on the farm with her husband, Anton. At first she doesn't recognize Jim. He stays and enjoys the love and friendship of her large family. He visits their old childhood play places before heading back to his work. His reflections are poignant.

I believe this book is another of Cather's loving testament to the pioneers of America, especially the women, some no doubt as remarkable as Antonia. Readers like me, with a rural or small town background, likely will take away a special pleasure in her words. But anyone with an interest in the deep and noble character values of people should enjoy this book. Thanks Amazon for making it available.

20 pages!
By Bartolo
I have no regrets about having ordered this "book," thinking it an unfinished novel, but others might be well notified that it's only a short story, "The Middle Years," from an unfinished volume to have carried the same name. At least this is what I've been able to discover from glancing online references.
The best James is beyond price, and at $12.00 this was worth it to me, a semi-autobiographical sketch of an author at the end of his life, full of insights into the subjective mind of the author and containing perhaps the most widely quoted and passionate definition of art in our culture. But others may want to know in advance: this is a short story of a mere 20 pages, and not even the eponymous unfinished volume, which included other stories as well.

If you are a fantasy or historical writer get this book
By Gwen Hankins
This book ought to have been named subterranian cities! Think of ten thousand or more people living underground; having individual homes, store fronts or market places, food and animal storage. From Turkey to London this author explores the type of rock or stone, tools, and why ancient man and mankind through the centuries used these caves. Technical, yet with some prose. Great research book!

Breaking the Curse: Raven's Royal Mate: An Adult Sleeping Beauty Retelling (Sexy Gender Swapped Fairy Tales Book 3), by AJ Tipton

A terrible curse goes erotically right.

In a magical kingdom far away, there lived cursed princes, warrior women, and mighty magic. Breaking the Curse is a sexy gender swapped Sleeping Beauty retelling where the heroes have become heroines, the heroines have become heroes, and nothing is as it seems.

Handsome Prince Nathan is doomed. Cursed at infancy to plunge into an eternal slumber on his twentieth birthday, he believes a short, isolated life is all he can ever hope for. With so little time left, he only wants to have fun with his best friend, a talking bird named Raven.

Raven is not what she seems. A mischievous temptress, Raven is the henchwomen of the same malevolent sorcerer who damned Nathan as an infant. Cursed to be a woman-by-night, bird-by-day, Raven still thinks she has everything she needs: a handsome semi-evil lover, a charming best friend, and an unending supply of pranks.

When one of her schemes puts Nathan’s life at risk, she’ll have to expose her true feelings for him to save the day. Will Raven change her wily ways? Or are they both out of time?

This naughty adult retelling of Sleeping Beauty involves light bondage, drunken sorcerers, and a love strong enough to defy even the strongest curse.

This STANDALONE novella is part of the "Sexy Gender Swapped Fairy Tale" series which can be read in any order. There are no cliffhangers, and each short ends as it should: happily ever after.

avoid this edition!
By hokuros
This is one of those strange off-prints one finds occasionally on Amazon, which shouldn't provide such unscrupulous profit seekers a venue. There is absolutely no publication information of any kind on this oddly sized volume--no date, no city or country, and most offensively, no identification of the translator. The text is very poorly typeset, with countless run-on words and oddly spaced lines due to faulty justification of the margins. Paragraphs are not indented. These cheaply printed editions advertise themselves as preserving the world's great literature, as if works such as this one were in danger of disappearing! Do yourself the favor of avoiding the irritation of reading such a poorly produced text--which is only making money for some unscrupulous business--and order one of the other legitimate editions available here and elsewhere. And add your voice to those that would like Amazon to stop selling such inferior products!

Discussing the Kindle free edition.
By Amazonian
This appears to be the John Howard 1924 translation which is also available on Amazon in a 4 star rated edition that is not free. This text also appears to be available at Gutenberg. I have not seen the justification problems and the paragraphs are slightly indented, enough for me. The translation is a bit clunky perhaps, but Huysmans' rich, convoluted prose is not easy to translate and best read in French if you can, using something like this as a check if you get a little lost. This is Huysmans masterpiece and is well worth reading. I doubt any translation will give you the unique flavor of Huysmans, some writers are like that, and Huysmans is one of them.

Awful printing! Check the ISBN
By K
This edition -- which looks like it's from an anthology (large, thin paper back with a picture of old books on the cover; ISBN 9781466268043) -- is almost unreadable. Passages are oddly justified and paragraphs aren't indented. Don't buy it! But do buy a different edition. Huysmans is definitely worth reading.

Emma (Knickerbocker Classics), by Jane Austen

Dive into a world of romance, village life and even a little silliness in Jane Austen's timeless novel.

Despite the fact that Jane Austen set out to write a story with heroine whom she said that "no one but myself will much like," Emma has resonated with readers since its original publication in 1815 and has been retold many times for television and movies.

Self-satisfied Emma Woodhouse thinks she is above romance of any kind, but when she decides she is a great matchmaker and sets out to find a wealthy husband for her friend, the sweet yet pitiable Harriet Smith, she crosses paths with the charming Mr. Knightley. Even though Emma tries to ignore her feelings for him, she ends up marrying him and realizes that "Perfect happiness, even in memory, is not common."

Beyond the romance, Emma is full of humor and wit and is also a commentary on upper-class social manners at the turn of the nineteenth century. The title character herself, rather you love her or hate her, is both inescapably self-delusional and rather fun to imagine.

Complete and unabridged, this elegantly designed, clothbound edition features an elastic closure and a new introduction by Alison Fraser.

Review
- "Austen's characters are unquestionably one key to her greatness. Her understanding of the human heart is forensic and also frosted with the necessary detachment that gives deeper meaning to her rendering of human frailty. In "Emma", Jane Austen shows us the halting development of an adolescent girl from perky narcissism to something approaching empathy." --"Guardian "

- "It is the cleverest of books. I especially love the dialogue -- every speech reveals the characters' obsessions and preoccupations, yet it remains perfectly natural...absolutely gripping." --Susannah Clarke

About the Author

Jane Austen was born in 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire. She was the seventh child of the local rector and her life, by modern standards, was uneventful. In 1801 she moved with her parents to Bath but returned to Hampshire when her father died, settling in the village of Chawton. She remained there until 1817, when she moved to Winchester to be within easy reach of her doctor. She died that year, at age forty-one, and is buried in Winchester Cathedral, which also contains a plaque in honor of her memory. Four of her novels were published anonymously in her lifetime; two more, one of which was Persuasion, appeared posthumously.

Alison Fraser is a PhD candidate in the Department of English at the University of Buffalo, where she teaches courses on literature and film and curates the Helen Adam Digital Collection for the University Libraries.

It's such a happiness when good people get together
By EA Solinas
"Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition" is a suitable heroine for Jane Austen's lightest, frothiest novel. While "Emma" is not nearly as dramatic as Austen's other works, it is an enchanting little comedy of manners in which a young woman with the best intentions meddles in others' love lives... with only the faintest idea of how people (including herself) actually feel.

After matchmaking her governess Miss Taylor, Emma Woodhouse considers herself a natural at bringing people together. She soon becomes best buddies with Harriet, a sweet (if not very bright) young woman who is the "natural daughter of somebody." Emma becomes determined to pair Harriet with someone deserving of her (even derailing a gentleman-farmer's proposal), such as the smarmy, charming Mr. Elton. When Emma's latest attempt falls apart, she finds that getting someone OUT of love is a lot harder than getting them INTO it.

At around the same time, two people that Emma has heard about her entire life have arrived -- the charming Frank Churchill, and the reserved, remote Miss Jane Fairfax (along with rumors of a married man's interest in her). Emma begins a flirtatious friendship with Frank, but for some reason is unable to get close to Miss Fairfax. As she navigates the secrets and rumors of other people's romantic lives, she begins to realize who she has been in love with all along.

Out of all Jane Austen's books, "Emma" is the frothiest and lightest -- there aren't any major scandals, lives ruined, reputations destroyed, financial crises or sinister schemes. There's just a little intertwined circle of people living in a country village, and how one young woman tries to rearrange them in the manner that she genuinely thinks is best. Of course, in true comedy style everything goes completely wrong.

And despite the formal stuffiness of the time, Austen wrote the book in a languidly sunny style, threading it with a complex web of cleverly orchestrated rumors and romantic tangles. There's some moments of seriousness (such as Emma's rudeness to kind, silly Miss Bates), but it's also laced with some entertaining dialogue ("Silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way") and barbed humor (the ridiculous and obnoxious Mrs. Elton).

Modern readers tend to be unfairly squicked by the idea of Emma falling for a guy who's known her literally all her life, but Austen makes the subtle relationship between Knightley and Emma one of affectionate bickering and beautiful romantic moments ("If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am. You hear nothing but truth from me").

Emma is a character who is likable despite her flaws -- she's young, bright, well-meaning and assured of her own knowledge of the human heart, but also naive and sometimes snobbish. She flits around like a clumsy butterfly, but is endearing even when she screws up. Mr. Knightley is her ideal counterpoint, being enjoyably blunt and sharp-witted at all times. And there's a fairly colorful supporting cast -- Emma's neurotic but sweet dad, her kindly ex-governess, the charming Frank, the fluttery Miss Bates, and even the smarmy Mr. Elton and his bulldozing wife.

"Emma" is the most lightweight and openly comedic of all Jane Austen's novels, with a likable (if clueless) heroine and a multilayered plot full of half-hidden feelings. A lesser delight.

A Prince of Sinners, by E. Phillips Oppenheim

Already the sweepers were busy in the deserted hall, and the lights burned low. Of the great audience who had filled the place only half-an-hour ago not one remained. The echoes of their tumultuous cheering seemed still to linger amongst the rafters, the dust which their feet had raised hung about in a little cloud. But the long rows of benches were empty, the sweepers moved ghostlike amongst the shadows, and an old woman was throwing tealeaves here and there about the platform. In the committee-room behind a little group of men were busy with their leave-takings. The candidate, a tall, somewhat burly man, with hard, shrewd face and loosely knit figure, was shaking hands with every one. His tone and manner savoured still of the rostrum.

Well produced Kindle edition of a classic Oppenheim story
By Phil (not) in Mågnoliá
Remarkably, given the large number of different versions of this book available here on Amazon (at the moment I count two Kindle editions, 16 different hardcover editions, and 29 different paperback editions), there are presently no reviews offered. The large number of offerings is no doubt due to the public domain status of this work; still it surely deserves some comment here by the reviewing community.

The version I have myself is the Open Road Kindle Edition of A Prince of Sinners which has been recently (late November, 2014) issued by Open Road publishing, together with MysteriousPress dot com. Open Road is a publisher who has been issuing very well done Kindle editions of many classic works, all well edited and presented. In printed form, this book is approximately 400 pages long.

E. Phillips Oppenheim was a very successful English novelist, born in 1866 and living until 1946. Over the course of his lifetime he produced well in excess of 100 novels, as well as 37 collections of short stories, and 30 or so film adaptations. He was well enough known that his picture was featured on the September 12, 1927 edition of Time Magazine, commemorating the publication of his 100th novel. Wiki reports that he was successful enough to have purchased a villa in France, a yacht, and a house in Guernsey. He died at the house, le Vanquiédor in St. Peter Port, Guernsey.

Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë

Without a doubt, today Wuthering Heights is one of the most loved and treasured novels ever written in English – an absolute “must read”. Although Wuthering Heights is now widely regarded as one of the most important classics of English literature, contemporary reviews for the novel were deeply divided, as it was considered controversial because its depiction of mental and physical cruelty was unusually stark, and it challenged strict Victorian ideals of the day, including religious hypocrisy, morality, social classes and gender inequality. At times dark and sinister, the novel broke with many contemporary ideas as to how romantic literature should be composed. Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel, written between October 1845 and June 1846, and published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell; she sadly died the following year, aged just 30. Though Emily would not live to experience it, Wuthering Heights rose to become a model of a romantic, gothic novel full of passion, jealousy and tragic love. The main characters Heathcliff and Catherine have been firmly established as the most fascinating and mose tragic couple in literature since Romeo and Juliet but with far more dire consequences for everybody involved. This is an unabridged edition.

From Publishers Weekly
The main drama in Bronte's novel happens in a long narrative told by an elderly housekeeper to a convalescing new tenant. This story-within-a-story setup makes it well suited for audio adaptation, as Scales takes the housekeeper's part and relates the past, while West performs as the tenant and describes the present. Scales primarily uses a folksy lower-class accent, but she also makes her voice harsh and threatening when speaking as Heathcliff, the surly man at the novel's heart. West, as the bewildered tenant, manages to sound both nervous and pretentious, but his part is fairly small, especially with this abridgment, so he mostly serves to provide transitions for the housekeeper's story. The extensive abridgment generally deletes sentences and phrases rather than entire paragraphs or sections. One drawback for the audio format is the difficulty of clarifying the novel's convoluted plot and family tree, since it's harder to search back through long CD tracks than through earlier chapters of the paperback. While a little of the depth of Bronte's writing is lost in abridgment, the novel's emotional core remains intact and wrenching, and the actors' heartfelt interpretations make it easy to imagine being curled up by a warm fire listening to an absorbing tale. In June, Penguin Audio remastered and released on CD for the first time nine other Penguin Classics: Crime and Punishment, Dracula, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Tale of Two Cities.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—This audio version of Emily Bronte's classic is narrated by Ann Flosnik. Initially, her narration makes it difficult to distinguish between characters, but as the tale progresses, her vocal characterizations become more dramatic and unique for each character, drawing listeners deeper and deeper into this dark and brooding love story. The first disk of the set also contains a PDF ebook of the full text of the novel which can be downloaded. Some students will want to read along with the narrated version, while others can use the ebook as a reference tool for class assignments. A nice addition to classic literature collections and a good way to enhance the English curriculum.—Anita Lawson, Otsego High School, Otsego, MI

The only edition to buy
By Joseph Guyer
This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)

As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.

Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

wuthering heights editions
By Jordi Vilalta Lopez
Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:

A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).

1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation,
excellent introduction.

2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.

3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.

4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.

5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.

B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).

6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).

7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.

7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on the
Clarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.

8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in too
many of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.

9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Do not miss out on this book...
By KayBee
You know all those 'classic' novels you read in high school? How many of them do you actually remember? Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best.

There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.

Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

"[...] Under such circumstances did the young couple start in life, and many there were who looked upon them with envy. At first, of course, the household did not run as smoothly as it might have done - meals were late, and served with less ceremony than either liked; but, as Bessie said, as she and Thaddeus were finishing their breakfast one morning, “What could you expect?” To which Thaddeus, with his customary smile, replied “What, indeed! We get along much better than I really thought we should with old Ellen.” Old Ellen was the cook, and she had been known to Thaddeus as “Old Ellen” even before his lips were able to utter the words. “Ellen has her ways, and Jane has hers,” said Bessie. “After Jane has got[...]".

Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly, is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel "helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War", according to Will Kaufman. Stowe, a Connecticut-born teacher at the Hartford Female Seminary and an active abolitionist, featured the character of Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave around whom the stories of other characters revolve. The sentimental novel depicts the reality of slavery while also asserting that Christian love can overcome something as destructive as enslavement of fellow human beings. Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In the first year after it was published, 300,000 copies of the book were sold in the United States; one million copies in Great Britain. In 1855, three years after it was published, it was called "the most popular novel of our day." The impact attributed to the book is great, reinforced by a story that when Abraham Lincoln met Stowe at the start of the Civil War, Lincoln declared, "So this is the little lady who started this great war." The quote is apocryphal; it did not appear in print until 1896, and it has been argued that "The long-term durability of Lincoln's greeting as an anecdote in literary studies and Stowe scholarship can perhaps be explained in part by the desire among many contemporary intellectuals ... to affirm the role of literature as an agent of social change."

About the Author
Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American author and abolitionist. Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, she was raised in a deeply religious family and educated in a seminary school run by her elder sister. In her adult life, Stowe married biblical scholar and abolitionist Calvin Ellis Stowe, who would later go on to work as Harriet s literary agent, and the two participated in the Underground Railroad by providing temporary refuge for escaped slaves travelling to the American North. Shortly before the outbreak of the American Civil War, Stowe published her most famous work, Uncle Tom s Cabin, a stark and sympathetic depiction of the desperate lives of African American slaves. The book went on to see unprecedented sales, and informed American and European attitudes towards abolition. In the years leading up to her death, suffering from dementia or Alzheimer s disease, Stowe is said to have begun re-writing Uncle Tom s Cabin, almost word-for-word, believing that she was writing the original manuscript once again. Stowe died in July 1, 1896 at the age of eighty-five.

Sobering still
By Michael B. Grant
I have heard about this book my whole life but never understood what it was about. If, like me you make the assumption that it is a book about a slave that "sells out his own race", which is the definition of Uncle Tom that I gathered by looking at television and hearing the term used, you will surely miss the entire point of this book. Instead, the book is about a slave that is steadfast in his beliefs and principles. A man that holds on to his faith in Jesus. I really don't get the common use of the term after reading this.

Every one should read this book. It can be a hard read as it is a glimpse into a dark period in history.

A captivating story!
By Deborah
The book catches the attention of the reader from the beginning. But throughout I kept wondering why this book brought about such a stir for change. Though the stories told by the writer were accurate accounts of the times I'm sure, I kept thinking they were too mild a depiction of the atrocities that had actually occurred. I kept thinking "how could such a timid account of the institution of slavery have stirred our nation so?" I wondered, "where is the grotesque, the horrors, why am I reading a happily ever after accounting of such an awful institution. To be sure this was not what I was expecting to read. This couldn't be the book history has claimed to have stirred our country to begin to finally consider the abolition of such a horrible scourge afflicting the nation.

Then I get to the last Chapter where our author brings to account both the North and the South. Both are held responsible, both are guilty. The South for carrying out the atrocities and the North for standing by allowing it to continue. But our author didn't stop there. She went on to throw blame and guilt on the leaders of Christianity for twisting God's Word to justify the actions of both North and South. Both sides could not be right and the treatment of slaves in the North was not what it should have been if one believed in the Word of God. After reading the last Chapter I applaud Harriet Beecher Stowe for having the courage to write such a book in such a trying time as our nation was living then. She was truly a woman of courage and inspiration. I wish I had read this years ago and I highly recommend it to all who are interested in the history of this country.

Excellent book
By Nikii Whitehead
In reading this book you either fall in love and empathize with the characters or truly dislike the characters. It is hard to get into this book because of the strange dialect. Do not let this stop you. I promise you will enjoy if you continue reading.
