Clock Without Hands (Valancourt 20th Century Classics), by Gerald Kersh

"How easy Mr. Kersh makes it all seem! How admirably he sets the scene, the atmosphere . . . very neatly done." - The Observer

"Three short, rough novels, hard-hitting, battering the emotions without compunction . . . Kersh tells a story, as such, rather better than anybody else." - Pamela Hansford Johnson, Daily Telegraph

Best known for his gritty novels of London life and his weird and often horrific short fiction, in Clock Without Hands (1949) Gerald Kersh delivers three novellas, each very different but all showcasing the virtuosity of his storytelling. Clock Without Hands relates the unexpected and macabre impact of a sordid murder on the mild-mannered neighbour who witnesses the crime. In Flight to the World's End, a desperate boy flees his cruel life at an orphanage, only to discover a harsh truth about the world outside. And in Fairy Gold, a clerk plays a malicious practical joke on his impoverished co-worker, with unpredictable and startling consequences.

Gerald Kersh (1911-1968) published more than thirty books, including the noir classic Night and the City (1938) and Fowlers End (1957), which Anthony Burgess called "one of the great comic novels of the century," as well as hundreds of short stories which were once ubiquitous in British and American magazines. But though he has been championed by Angela Carter, Harlan Ellison, Ian Fleming, Michael Moorcock and others, Kersh has undeservedly fallen into neglect since his death. This edition of one of his lesser-known books is the first-ever reprint and includes a new introduction by Thomas Pluck.

"You Click Unheard... You Are in Hell"
By Eclectic Reader
The three novellas which make up Clock without Hands (1949; re-issued by Valancourt Books in 2015 with an Introduction by Thomas Pluck) is the perfect sampler of the many worlds of Gerald Kersh (1911-1968). The tales encompass the grim, down and out world of urban life, the slow and relentless smothering of innocence, and the offbeat and zany. Regardless of the tone of the tale, all three stories contain typical, uncompromising elements: starkness, realism, and a sense of mankind's helplessness in a callous world.

In the opening title story, "Clock without Hands," readers enter an impoverished urban world where irony is king and the realm is filled with needy and desperate people with little chance of escape or betterment. Of the three novellas included in the collection, this chronicle most resembles some of Kersh's most unforgettable work: Night and the City (1938) and Prelude to a Certain Midnight (1953). Police arrest a woman for the brutal stabbing of "her pig of a husband." The trial and verdict is sure to be a slam-dunk for the prosecution especially given their "chief witness," George Wainewright, but the defense has a powerful argument for self-defense based upon the husband's repeated and well-known brutality toward his wife.

From the beginning there are subtle hints that not all is well with Wainewright and once the jury reaches its decision Kersh, slowly rips off the veneer that barely covers Wainewright to reveal a man yearning for attention--to be a somebody--at any cost. Effort after effort to attain his goal, each more frantic than the one before it, is met with frustration until the story reaches its dramatic, tragic, violent, and mordant conclusion.

"Flight to the World's End" takes readers away from the most typical of Kersh urban settings and drops them in what otherwise would appear to be an idyllic setting as the author introduces his main characters: Peter John Gospel, a poet, and his protective wife, Betty Lou, who is determined to provide her husband with the most affirming (at least in her mind) and isolated environment in which to work and thirteen-year-old Henry Ford, a ward at St. Timothy's Home for Waifs and Stays.

The majority of the author's attention is focused upon Henry--a youth nearly bursting with generosity who is not only denied the opportunity to demonstrate his true nature, but is mistreated because of his inability to fit in by both his peers and superiors to the point where he is desperate to escape the Home and run away, naïvely hoping to find a new beginning with a life at sea. With his usual flair for the ironic, Kersh throws into the path of the youth's escape an opportunity that forces the boy's true nature to once again surface and to perform "a noble deed," as well as force Peter John Gospel to face a long-denied, buried truth about his own inner self. It is a moving story, but as is usual for Kersh, there are seldom happy endings no matter what kind of prospects present themselves to his characters.

The concluding tale in Clock without Hands, "Fairy Gold," introduces readers to one of Kersh's typically comic characters, Mr. Dick Trew who fancies himself an "excruciatingly funny" jokester and story-teller who also likes "to tell stories in dialect, for he was proud of a certain knack of mimicry, and a mobile, expressive face." Nothing pleases him more than to get others to laugh and admire his comedic skills and nothing frustrates him more than a joke that falls flat or is ruined by the intervention of another's untimely comment.

"Fairy Gold" is the longest of the three novellas in Clock without Hands. Unfortunately, a part of its length has the feeling of unnecessary padding to it. The first two stories are more appealing in their directness, "Clock without Hands" being the most focused of the tales. "Fairy Gold," however, still contains Kersh's razor sharp sense of irony even though the story is off-beat. Trew sets about to create his greatest prank ever at the expense of Joseph Hugh Middleton. Although generally excellent companions, Trew's trick comes in the form of a cruel and heartless hoax perfectly timed for the August Bank Holiday, one that the overworked and grossly underpaid Middleton and his wife with a baby on the way fall for completely. Much like the attention deprived protagonist in "Clock without Hands," Trew's joke doesn't win him what he expects and through a series of what appear to be missteps by Middleton, the intended victim of the joke, along with some tricks planted by the author, Middleton comes out on top.

"Fairy Gold" contains some interesting commentary on the vicious cycle of people having to work in order to get money--money which just changes hands to pay for the labor of others and Kersh creatively works the concept into the story itself toward the end as a part of Middleton's eventual fate. Unlike so many Kersh stories, the conclusion to "Fairy Gold" has a happy but not altogether surprising ending.

Clock without Hands is not among Kersh's A-list of titles, but is none the less entertaining and worthwhile. Kersh's writing is always fascinatingly wrought with vividness but without verbosity. His characters always come across as true-to-life and although there can occasionally be some obvious plot manipulation in his stories, they are always rewarding. As Thomas Pluck in his Introduction to the Valancourt edition writes, "Kersh can do more with a story than many can with a novel; with the novella, he does more than others do with a series." The many and varied worlds of Gerald Kersh are always worth a visit.

The Captain of the Gray-Horse Troop, by Hamlin Garland

Excerpt from The Captain of the Gray-Horse Troop: A Novel

Winter in the upper heights of the Bear Tooth Range is a glittering desolation of snow with a flaming blue sky above. Nothing moves, nothing utters a sound, save the cony at the mouth of the spiral shafts which sinks to his deeply buried den in the rocks. The peaks are like marble domes, set high in the pathway of the sun by day and thrust amid the stars by night. The firs seem hopeless under their ever-increasing burdens. The streams are silenced - only the wind is abroad in the waste, the tireless, pitiless wind, fanged like ingratitude, insatiate as fire.

Sex and anachy.
By John McCormack
Although usually considered a decadent, Mirbeau simply uses the decadent mode as a way of revealing the hypocracies of modern society. He combines psychosexual realism and sociological naturalism to incite feelings of perverse dread with the goel of destroying all systems - religious, moral, and political. Total anarchy is the goal. Similar to Huysmans, Baudilaire, and synbolist writers, he specialized in sexological decadence. He sees human relationships in terms of master/slave, victum and victumizer. Clearly one of the most immoral books, focasing on the inherent cruelty hidden in female sexuality, this book also has sado-masochistic episodes, Tons of bizarre sexual devience, and a pervasive sense of the vial, impure, un-natural, aspects of human desire. Indeed, he seems intensley obsessed with the extremes of perverse erotisism and its subversive impact on society. Mirbeau seems hell-bent on disfiguring the female bodily and spiritualy. Only satisfied when the extremes of Man's degenerate pathology has been reached, Mirbeau revels in the complete ahnilhilation of all vaules, morals, and social orders. Plungeing into the most hidden realms of morbid fantacy, this is a classic tale of vice and evil. Highly recommended to all fans of great literature.

"[...]we will abide. What, then, is the language of the Westminster Confession of Faith, the established standard of orthodoxy in the American Presbyterian Churches? The third chapter commends thus: “God, from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass” (p. 15); and, at the commencement of the fifth chapter, we read: “God, the great Creator of all things, doth uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures, actions, and things, from the greatest even to the least, by his most wise and holy providence.”[...]".

An Interesting Read
By Steven H
In this short work by Francis Hodgson, a 19th century Methodist minister, he attempts to explain the flaws in Calvinism while proposing another point of view to replace it. At the beginning, he explains what the Calvinist view of predestination and election really teaches. He does this by quoting extensively from Calvinist sources. After establishing that Calvinism shows that God is the cause of every event that comes to pass—and yet denies God is in any way blameworthy of sin—Hodgson takes his time to show why he thinks this is an inconsistent stance. In the final section, after demonstrating some of the inconsistencies in deterministic theology, he proposes the Arminian perspective as an alternative biblical view of election and predestination.

Something he points out early on is that to reject the Calvinist description of election and predestination does not mean one denies the biblical references to them.

Hodgson writes,

“Some suppose that the Methodists deny the doctrine of Divine predestination, that the word itself is an offence to them, and that they are greatly perplexed and annoyed by those portions of Scripture by which the doctrine is proclaimed. This is a mistaken view. We have no objection to the word; we firmly believe the doctrine; and all the Scriptures, by which it is stated or implied, are very precious to us. There is a certain theory of predestination, the Calvinistic theory, which we consider unscriptural and dangerous. There is another, the Arminian theory, which we deem Scriptural and of very salutary influence.”

So, one should not so easily accuse a non-Calvinist of a wholesale rejection of scriptural passages. It really comes down to a somewhat different definition of keywords in the text.

While this book may rely too heavily on the author’s philosophical distaste for compatibilism (he spends many pages pointing out how determinism and moral responsibility are irreconcilable), the work has many excellent points and is a good example of American Methodist theology in the 1800s. Not to say the book is devoid of biblical references—it actually has quite a few—but it could have used more clear exegesis. It’s not the best example of a non-Calvinist view of predestination, but it is a good one.

Besides, even if our wills aren't free, the book is.

It’s a good read if you are interested in this perspective.

The very last novel that Gene Stratton-Porter wrote before her death. The tale of a wounded World War I veteran, a beekeeper and an impish tomboy all helped by each other. A book that examines the healing power that nature and kindness can have upon someone’s life.

The Keeper of the Bees
By A Customer
As a teenager, I balked at my mother's suggestion of reading the old book which was falling apart at the seams. Much to my surprise, I actually enjoyed "The Keeper of the Bees" and I'm looking forward to reading other books by Gene Stratton-Porter. This story is of an injured soldier who runs away from the best hospitals the military could offer and escapes to the beach to die. Much to his surprise, rather than relying on others constantly, he finds himself helping others throughout his journey. This experience helps improve his health both mentally and physically. This is an excellent book for readers of all ages and a must for the home library collection.

Wholesome Romance and Recovery Story
By M. Sellers
This novel, written by the author of A Girl of the Limberlost and Freckles, begins at the end of WW I (The Great War). Jamie MacFarlane, an American of Scottish descent, is languishing in a California hospital, the wound in his chest not getting any better. He is far from God, alone in the world, and sure he will soon die. He overhears that he is to be sent to a different hospital, one rife with tuberculosis. Instead of submitting to certain death, Jamie walks away from the military hospital and embarks on a "Great Adventure."

From his first interactions with people (and because the author repeatedly tells us), we can see Jamie is a man of fine moral character--trustworthy, honest, wholesome, and helpful. Eventually, his Great Adventure brings him to the point of death, or so he thinks. Then he stumbles upon a lovely little house by the ocean. A man appears at the gate and calls for help. Jamie, forgetting his own near-exhaustion and certain death, rushes to the aid of the elderly man and telephones for help. The man, The Bee Master, asks Jamie to live in his house and manage it and care for his bees and plants until he is able to return. (Because, he could see immediately that Jamie was an honest, wholesome, trustworthy fellow.)

The story progresses with the addition of new characters--the Little Scout, a genderless neighborhood child and "partner" of the Bee Master who befriends Jamie and provides all sorts of sage wisdom and childish fun; Margaret, the kindly neighbor who cooks and cleans for Jamie while living through her own struggles; and the Storm Girl, a mysterious woman who unburdens her heart to Jamie and is helped by him.

The story progresses in a satisfying way. Porter spares no expense in her discussion of nature. Bees and their workings, the native flora of California, the scents of the garden, the landscape of the area--all are worked in as an integral part of the story. She also make sure to express her views of the morality of the time and stresses the sorrows of young people and their modern, "oversexed" ways and the wearing of too much makeup while playing up the ideas of patriotism and the American melting pot. The ideas of working hard, prayers and thanksgiving, helping one's fellow man, and forgiveness are all woven in to this tale.

In addition to all the wholesomeness and nature study, the book is also a romance. Who is the mystery girl? Will she and Jamie ever get together? Where is Margaret's daughter? Will Jamie's wound heal? Will the Bee Master return to his home? What are the secrets of his past?

As far as objectionable material, a woman becomes pregnant out of wedlock (but pays heavily for her indiscretion), and Jamie thinks about his Storm Girl (but not in an inappropriate way). Many tomatoes are eaten, although I doubt any would find this objectionable.

All in all, The Keeper of the Bees is a clean, pleasant read which adults and teens alike would enjoy. The plot would be a bit much for a younger reader (elementary), but the material would not be objectionable.

"Bees" is a Keeper
By Steven Fantina
Reading "Keeper of the Bees" is a very sensual experience. When the action takes place in the Bee Master's garden I was tempted to actually pick some of the blue flowers. There were times when I was certain that I was smelling the salt air as I heard the Pacific's Ocean's waves crash on the sandy beach. And when the scene shifted to the apiary, it took a concerted effort not to recoil as the swarms worked their magic, and of course I craved the delicious honey fresh out of the hive.
The wholesome adventure involves a slowly recovering World War I veteran who runs away from the hospital to die in the tranquility of the California's coastal countenance, but instead finds redemption by coming to the aid of an assortment of fleshed-out characters.
While the book is a beneficial read, I had a few structural complaints. At times Mrs. Stratten-Porter's style seemed haphazard and in isolated incidents, I was delayed by choppy sentence structure. The departure of the Brunsons--minor characters relevant only to the early chapters--seemed disturbingly abrupt, and the presence of the androgynous Little Scout will no doubt be deliberately misinterpreted today in ways that the author never intended 75 years ago. Winnowing 50-100 of its 500+ pages seemed like a feasible option that could have dulcified the work.
Tragically, Mrs. Stratten-Porter did not live to see this book's publication. (Perhaps her untimely death prevented the final proofread which may have assuaged the mechanical drawbacks I referenced.) It was a posthumous swan song that capped her palmy career. Based on this beneficent tale, I am very interested in exploring some of her earlier efforts.

The Fortunate Mistress: or, a History of the Life of Mademoiselle de Bealau Known

Defoe's last and darkest novel, is the autobiography of a woman who has traded her virtue, at first for survival, and then for fame and fortune. Its narrator tells the story of her own 'wicked' life as the mistress of rich and powerful men. A resourceful adventuress, she is also an unforgiving analyst of her own susceptibilities, who tells us of the price she pays for her successes. Endowed with many seductive skills, she is herself seduced: by money, by dreams of rank, and by the illusion that she can escape her own past. Unlike Defoe's other penitent anti-heroes, however, she fails to triumph over these weaknesses. Roxana's fame lies not only in the heroine's 'vast variety of fortunes', but in her attempts to understand the sometimes bitter lessons of her life as a 'Fortunate Mistress'.

Review
`Roxana is possible Defoe's most fascinating story-teller and this, one of his most intriguing stories.' The Daily Telegraph

Review
"Rare is that edition that gives us a fresh interpretation of a primary work, but that is precisely what Melissa Mowry has accomplished in this excellent edition. The introduction details Roxana's place in Defoe's career and the ways the novel evokes his Dissenter politics, while also shedding new light on the novel's imbrication in debates about political sovereignty, feminism, and prostitution. The supplementary materials are all artfully chosen to produce fresh readings of the novel. Finally, the inclusion of some of the alternate endings written for Roxana, along with a brief reception history of Defoe's work, invites speculation about changes in the representation of gender and sexuality over the course of the long eighteenth century in Britain." (Scarlet Bowen )

From the Back Cover

Almost three hundred years after its first publication, Roxana continues to challenge readers, who, though compelled by Roxana’s story, are often baffled by her complex relationships to her children, her fortune, and her vices. As one of Daniel Defoe’s four major fictions, Roxana has long been understood as central to the history of the novel, and provides readers with Defoe’s sharpest and most specific commentary on the complexities of life in seventeenth-century London. This edition offers a range of contemporary documents that will help readers understand the struggles of Roxana’s life as series of metaphoric engagements with pressing issues of her time.

Unforgettable
By krebsman
ROXANA is a fascinating book. Too often the title character is measured against Moll Flanders and is found inferior. Yes, she shares several of Moll's traits, including beauty, ambition and a lack of hesitation to use sex to exploit a situation to her advantage. But Roxana is a far more complex character. Whereas Moll started poor, Roxana suffers a calamity from which she must recover. It is through this experience that she develops into the con-artist that she becomes. But what truly sets her apart from all of Defoe's other characters is that she is capable of guilt. She is more psychologically developed in other ways, too. Notice all the complex emotions when she engineers a menage-a-trois with a gentleman and her maid, Amy. Defoe was "pushing the envelope" with ROXANA. Wherein MOLL FLANDERS is a comedy, ROXANA is a primitive thriller. It's a pity Alfred Hitchcock never adapted ROXANA for the screen because there are several very unsettling and suspenseful scenes in the novel as ROXANA's true identity is in danger of being revealed. And the ending is truly unsettling. I don't know why Hollywood hasn't discovered this one (although considering all the terrible film versions of MOLL FLANDERS, perhaps it's just as well).

The form of the novel was new when ROXANA was written. There were no rules. There were no precedents. Defoe came up with something truly extraordinary. There's nothing else quite like it. For me, ROXANA is unforgettable. I first read this book twenty years ago and there are scenes that still haunt me. If you've read ROBINSON CRUSOE and MOLL FLANDERS, by all means read ROXANA, too. You'll be amazed at how avant-garde ROXANA seems in comparison. Of the six of Defoe's major works that I have read, this is one of my favorites. It's not as tidy as CRUSOE and MOLL, but it has more of a plot and covers a broader range of emotions.

A Defoe fan
By Stephen Ward
I read "Robinson Crusoe" as a young boy, and never forgot it (55 years later); then, as a mature adult I read "A Journal of the Plague Year" and "Moll Flanders", both of which were execellent reads; and a few days ago I finished "Roxana", so let me share a few thoughts about the book.
First off, when you read Defoe, it is essential to realize that you are dipping into the very beginnings of English literature. Anything that is three centuries removed from the present has to be put into its historical context in order to make sense of it, and contemporary values must be held in abeyance. If you are capable of doing that, you are in for a heck of a good story, as are all of the books mentioned above.
"Roxana" concerns the rise and fall (mostly rise) of a woman left destitute, along with her five children, by her fool of a husband. Circumstances eventually lead her to prostitution as a means of survival, and as luck would have it, her "gentlemen protectors" are uniformly wealthy, and by means of careful marshalling of her earnings Roxana becomes independently wealthy. But what she lacks is social status, which leads her to her final alliance with a Dutch merchant who knows nothing of her past.
Along the way, Roxana begets and abandons about nine offspring here and there(this being the days before birth control), and one of them, Susan, figures in the downfall of Roxana. This novel pays great attention to the psychological aspects of living a life that is generally condemned by society. Defoe shapes Roxana's psychological health around his own ethical views, and, as such, makes Roxana suffer for her choices in the long run. Thus, the novel does not end happily for its central character, an interesting fact, in that this is the only novel of Defoe's that does not end happily for the protagonist.
All told, "Roxana" is a great read. Defoe certainly reflects his ethical biases, but at the same time does a good job of objectively fleshing out charaters who forcefully express points of view that differ from his own.
For me, everything worked beautifully in the novel until the last paragraph, but that happens a lot in literature.

Interesting Psychological Study
By A Customer
This novel follows the progress of a woman who is left by her husband with only her servant. She vows never to be poor again, and climbs her way back up the social ladder by using men and her body. The novel, while possibly intended as a conduct book to show women what happens to those who sin, reads today as a portrait of a woman trapped between society's views and her own upward movement. A very interesting, and at times disturbing, read.

reading about the 1950's
By David Brockert
In the future we will be controlled by our betters, well at in this fiction. Man has travelled to Mars and started colonies that have thrived after the diseases Martian bugs created were conquered. Dr. Wong was instrumental in developing the vaccine for the one disease and has been working on the other. Inadvertently, he also made a odd discovery that will get him put away or worse because it was not approved by the rulers and it would be hoarded by them. His dilemma is how to circumvent the rulers and get the discovery to the masses?
You will find that you are reading about the 1950's set in the future, but this happens a lot in older science fiction. The sex roles are standard; the technology is futuristic.

"We shall never be alone again like this"
By EA Solinas
Edith Wharton filled her novels with a feeling of ruin, passion and restriction. People can fall in love, but rarely do things turn out well.

But but few of even her books can evoke the feeling of "Ethan Frome," whick packs plenty of emotion, vibrancy and regrets into a short novella. While the claustrophobic feeling doesn't suit her writing well, she still spins a beautiful, horrifying story of a man facing a life without hope or joy.

It begins nearly a quarter of a century after the events of the novel, with an unnamed narrator watching middle-aged, crippled Ethan Frome drag himself to the post-office. He becomes interested in Frome's tragic past, and hears out his story.

Ethan Frome once hoped to live an urban, educated life, but ended up trapped in a bleak New England town with a hypochondriac wife, Zeena, whom he didn't love. But then his wife's cousin Mattie arrives, a bright young girl who understands Ethan far better than his wife ever tried to. Unsurprisingly, he begins to fall in love with her, but still feels an obligation to his wife.

But then Zeena threatens to send Mattie away and hire a new housekeeper, threatening the one bright spot in Ethan's dour life. Now Ethan must either rebel against the morals and strictures of his small village, or live out his life lonely. But when he and Mattie try for a third option, their affair ends in tragedy.

Wharton was always at her best when she wrote about society's strictures, morals, and love that defies that. But rather than the opulent backdrop of wealthy New York, here the setting is a bleak, snowy New England town, appropriately named Starkfield. It's a good reflection of Ethan Frome's life, and a good illustration of how the poor can be trapped.

Even when she describes a "ruin of a man" in a cold, distant town, Wharton spins beautiful prose ("the night was so transparent that the white house-fronts between the elms looked gray against the snow") and eloquent symbolism, like the shattered pickle dish. There's only minimal dialogue -- most of what the characters think and feel is kept inside.

Instead she piles on the atmosphere, and increases the tension between the three main characters, as attraction and responsibility pull Ethan in two directions. It all finally climaxes in the disaster hinted at in the first chapter, which is as beautifully written and wistful as it is tragic.

If the book has a flaw, it's the incredibly small cast -- mainly just the main love triangle. Ethan's not a strong or decisive man, but his desperation and loneliness are absolutely heartbreaking, as well as his final fate. Mattie seems more like a symbol of the life he wants that a full-fledged person, and Zeena is annoying and whiny up until the end, when we see a different side of her personality. Not a stereotypical shrew.

"Ethan Frome" is a true tragedy -- as beautifully written as it is, it's still Wharton's description of how a man merely survives instead of living, hopeless and devastated.

Cold and bleak but haunting
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
This is a short, intense novel that absolutely gripped me when I read it. The cold, bleak setting seems so appropriate to Ethan Frome's existence. A life full of obligation and duty, with no hint of joy or spontaneity.

Mattie Silver, a cousin of Ethan's wife Zenobia (Zeena) brings a small amount of light and life into Ethan's life. Ethan pays a heavy price for this, as do both Mattie and to a lesser extent Zeena.

This is a sad novel about duty, tragedy and mutual obligation. It is not a light read, but it is a wonderful piece of prose that demonstrates that there is a form of beauty in brevity.

Highly recommended.

It's Snowing, It's Snowing!
By Joseph J. Hanssen
Once in a while you have to put down those current novels, and read some classic literature. And Edith Wharton is one of the best.
This story takes place in the cold, bleak winter farmlands of Massachusetts. Ethan Frome, a poor farmer, has a hard life tending to his land, trying to make a meager living, and also taking care of his ungrateful, demanding, sickly wife, Zeena. When her cousin, Mattie, comes to help her, Ethan's life changes completely. He falls deeply in love with Mattie. This being the 1800's, he must endure the stifling conventions of that era's society also. There love for each other proves to be a fascinating story.
I loved this book. This is a story that will definitely take you away. You'll actually feel you are there. Edith's detail description of the scenery and landscape of that time are truly vivid. I found myself pausing from my reading to look outside to see if it was actually snowing. I highly suggest you find time to read "Edith Wharton's books, you'll be grateful. I certainly was!

Short stories but true to Henty's novel voice
By Sarah Dalziel
This is a collection of Henty's short stories. Two of which have female heroines, which is highly unusual in Henty's work (Search for a Secret being the exception). Thus, it is a little different than Henty's normal works. Having read nearly all of Henty's novels, I can safely say both the stories with female protagonists contain similar scenes and language to Henty's other work.

I quite enjoyed reading this small collection of short stories.

Not really one of Henty's best. He really was not too accurate on the East India company and its role in the politics of the British Raj in India! Interesting in that he normally writes for boys. This time he made a girl the heroine.

"[...] It is not, however, with the Memoirs of Satan, or with any but one of Hauff's works that we are now concerned. The 'Man in the Moon' was a scathing satire upon a school of story-book makers, popular at the time, and headed by one H. von Clauren, whose works we have not perused. 'Lichtenstein,' which has been dramatised, is not inferior to an inferior Waverley novel. The Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain

Mark Twain’s historical fable explores what happens when the Prince of Wales changes places with a young beggar

Set in sixteenth-century England, The Prince and the Pauper follows two boys with vastly different lives: Tom Canty, the indigent child of an abusive, roustabout thief, and Prince Edward, the son of King Henry VIII and heir to the throne.

One day, daydreaming while wandering near the king’s palace, Canty catches sight of the prince—and nearly catches a brutal beating from the royal guards. Prince Edward commands them to stop and invites the street urchin into his immaculate home. Both fascinated by their strikingly similar appearances, the two boys craft a plot that could unwittingly upend the monarchy: to temporarily switch clothes, thereby swapping lives. Through first-hand experience—and a series of humorous follies—the two discover that neither life is as carefree as they expected.

In The Prince and the Pauper, Twain elevates the classic theme of mistaken identity with his inimitable storytelling to create something uniquely American: a historical fable.
